Each class has a box and wish list seeking various donations that will be taken over to Bali during the holidays. If you would like to contribute please take the time to view the list in your child‟s class. Gold coin donations are also being collected and will be provided as a cash donation should you wish to provide. The second event will be a „Red Day‟ in support of those who suffer from haemophilia. On 22 nd June all children will be encouraged to wear red to school. The Councillors, along with the students from the Academic Challenge class, have decided to donate some of their profits from the Mothers‟ Day soap stall to the Haemophilia Foundation. Dear Maida Vale families,

New Technology Led by Ms Harris and Mrs Rullo the school has taken a huge leap forward as far as technologies in the school. Lost Property We have a huge mountain of lost property at the moment. Please check if your child is missing anything, from jumpers to single socks, and check the lost property box outside the staffroom. Unclaimed items will be disposed of at the end of the term and uniforms will be donated to the second hand uniform shop. Look for the mountain of clothes! Public Holiday I‟m sure everyone is aware, and in need of, Monday‟s WA Day Public Holiday. School commences on Tuesday and as communicated at the start of the year the School Development Days are now on the first day, or two, of each term. Community Request The school is seeking a parent who is a plumber and would be happy to „cut off‟ a sink in the library. We are about to remove an unused cupboard but need the sink removed first. A donation of your time will save the school upwards of $300. Payment in kind is greatly appreciated and businesses can be advertised on our LED sign. Please make contact directly with me if you can assist. Enjoy your WA Day long-weekend Best wishes Darren Greaves Darren Greaves | Principal Maida Vale Primary School | 310 Kalamunda Road, Maida Vale, WA 6056 | 9454 5260 | 9454 5206 | An Indepedendent Public School www.maidavaleps.wa.edu.au

The many faces of independence

by Michael Grose - Australia’s No 1 parenting educator

Here are 5 ways for parents to give their children the skills, encouragement and support in their quest for independence.

It’s been well documented in recent years that children/young people are dependent on adults for longer. In Australia one

in four 18-30 year olds still live at home and those numbers are on the increase. There are many reasons for this including

lack of housing, affordability, working and partnering later, and simple convenience.

The propensity for many parents to do too much for children is a massive contributor to this increased dependency. Oddly,

this is the exact opposite of what parents have always done, which is to develop their children’s independence, and in

doing so effectively become redundant from their children.

There are a number of reasons for the current high level of dependency parenting including family shrinkage (parents are

able to do a great deal for kids in small families), older parents (often over-concerned), busyness of life (it’s easier to do than delegate) and a heightened fear that the world is a dangerous place for children and young people.

Independence is the point

When independence becomes your priority then suddenly you’ve found a pathway to the development of other positive

qualities and traits in your children including the key four – confidence that comes from facing fears; competence that’s

built through mastery; creativity that’s encouraged when kids must resolve their own problems; and character that is

forged under the duress of challenge and hardship.

Adults are the gatekeepers for children’s independence. And of course, independence takes many guises including:

1. Self-helps skills

The starting point for independence building is giving kids the skills, know-how and confidence to look after their own

wellbeing and welfare. This is shown in the many everyday situations where parents model, teach and provide

opportunities for children to look after themselves. Including toddlers undressing themselves, primary aged children

preparing their own snacks, and teenagers organising their own transport to school and after school activities. Kids

develop real confidence from being able to look after themselves and others.

Independence is also built when children spend time in unpredictable, potentially risky environments such as the bush or

new environments beyond their neighbourhood. There may be some risk involved but this is where real learning lies for

children and young people. Eliminate the risk and you eliminate the learning.

STUDENT SERVICES …….continued

2. Autonomy to make choices and mistakes

Without realising it, as parents we frequently make choices on our children’s behalf. We choose the food they eat; the

games they play; their leisure activities and often the clothes they wear. When families are large (four or more children)

parents usually give their children more space to make their own decisions as well as opportunities to learn from their

poor choices. This may mean that children choose healthy interests and pursuits that parents are unfamiliar with, or even

swim against the tide of their parents’ wishes. In small families parents often know so much about minutiae of children’s

lives that inevitably we tend to impose greater well-intentioned control over children’s decisions.

3. Freedom to explore the neighbourhood

On a recent trip to Italy I was struck by how much freedom to wander their neighbourhoods Italian children had. It was a

throwback to the type of childhood that many of today’s parents experienced, where we had the opportunity to navigate

our neighbourhoods on our own without having to check in with our parents all the time.

4. Freedom to explore unpredictable and potentially risky environments

Independence is also built when children spend time in unpredictable, potentially risky environments such as the bush or

new environments beyond their neighbourhood. There may be some risk involved but this is where real learning lies for

children and young people. Eliminate the risk and you eliminate the learning.

5. Taking responsibility for your own problems and actions

There’s no doubt many kids are adept at shifting their problems and responsibilities to adults. One of my children would

always blame me when they were late for school. Even though the child in question had an alarm clock and was more than

capable of using it, any lack of punctuality was somehow shifted to me. Go figure! Independence comes when children

take ownership of their responsibilities rather than using someone else as a scapegoat.

In order to grant children and young people the type of independence outlined parents need to be brave rather than fearful;

work hard to develop the skills and know-how kids’ independence requires; and be willing to give kids the encouragement

and support they need to step out of their comfort zones when independence seems too hard.

Students in the team will receive a note in the near future regarding the carnival. Unfortunately, students who are listed as a reserve will not attend unless another member of the team will be absent on the day. The efforts of all students during their trials were very impressive. I encourage all members of the team to attend Run Club sessions to build their fitness prior to the carnival. Freo Footy Skills Next week, students in Year 4, 5 and 6 have the opportunity to compete in two competitions organised by the Fremantle Dockers. The Freo Long Bomb and Freo Kwik Kick are part of the Freo Footy Skills program delivered in primary schools throughout Western Australia. Interested students are invited to sign up for the competitions via the sign-up sheets in the Undercover Area.

Maida Vale Arts for Newsletter The Music program this year has had an amazing boost with the support from Drama and Visual Arts. Our students are so lucky to have such a comprehensive and integrated Arts program. All the Arts teachers have been working hard with their classes towards the Indigenous Arts presentation at the end of this term and have some nice surprises awaiting those who are able to attend. Deric Martin Music Specialist

The ukuleles bought by the P and C are very popular with the students using them and have proved to be useful in the teaching of a wide range of Music skills and concepts.

Students have also been enjoying the opportunity to get outside after ukulele instruction and spend practise time with friends.

The Ukuleles looked fantastic mounted on the wall already but the students from Rooms 5 and 6 with the help of Miss Kaden have provided even more colour with their creative guitars.

Many of the classes have been exploring their own interpretations of music from Cirque de Soleil through movement. With costuming they would look very much in place on a world famous stage.

The Support Expo Day was so much fun and participants enjoyed the experience of having students from across all year levels playing music together.

This year‟s choir is including Year Threes for the first time and I‟ve got to say they are doing a great job. This is also the biggest choir that we have had in my time here at Maida Vale PS. They have been working hard on their performance at the Crown Theatre next term. Mrs McCullen has been injecting some great ideas into our space themed show and the students have been demonstrating the high levels of self -discipline required to make it a standout performance. Tickets will be going on sale next Tuesday.

Our SIM students are also working towards their own performance at the Week 10 Arts Assembly.
