Park Synagogue Bulletin The Anshe Emeth Beth Tefilo Congregation February 2011 Shevat/Adar I 5771 Main Offices: 27500 Shaker Boulevard, Pepper Pike • Shabbat Morning Services: 3300 Mayfield Road, Cleveland Heights Who is your landzman? Landzman, a Yiddish word, means someone from the same neighborhood as you, the same village, someone with whom you share certain feelings because of shared roots and a shared history. You may have a landzman (or landzleit for plural) and you don’t even know it. When Barry Chesler and Deborah Glass shared a Haftarah on Shabbat Morning in December, they were sharing more than a Bar/Bat Mitzvah anniversary. Deborah’s grandparents, Ephraim & Tziporah Shatenshtein, lived in a section of Kovno, Russia, and lived in the same apartment building as Zalman and Ashne Chesler. To avoid being drafted into the Russian army for the required 25 years, Ephraim immigrated to America in 1902 and became a builder. Zalman became a peddler. Both families ultimately joined Park Synagogue. From Ephraim & Tziporah Shatenshtein descended Bob Stein and daughter, Deborah Glass. From Zalman & Ashne Chesler descended Howard Chesler and nephew Barry Chesler. And, now that Barry and Deborah are both grandparents, the Chesler and Stein Families have been landzleit for six generations! A Jewish community allows you to seek out and find landzleit, those with whom you share roots, memories and associations. Furthermore, I would suggest that the term landzman, or landzleit now has an expanded meaning. You can discover new landzleit in your life, not those who came from your neighborhood in Europe, rather, those with whom you share a special care and camaraderie based on new events and moments in your life. Some landzleit were shaped six generations ago; others are being created in this generation! When Steve Willensky moved to this community 20 years ago he knew no one. He knew not a single landzman, at least not by the textbook definition. But, he was befriended by those in our Synagogue and community. Harvey and Millie Klein reached out to him, he married Judy Klein (now Judy Willensky), and 20 years later, he is a landzman! When his brother, Elliot passed away last March, Steve found new landzleit at daily and Shabbat services. He also found it comforting to catalog his brother’s musical writings, of which there are many. One of his brother’s songs, “If You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful”, was performed by Whitney Houston and Jermaine Jackson and has remained one of the most popular wedding songs in America. In doing research on the internet, he noticed that it had been played at the Cleveland wedding of two Park Synagogue Members, Jodi Chesler & Jeremy Audino, who chose “If You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful” as their first wedding dance! Wonderful, meaningful moments, created by and fostered by the structure of community. For those who become involved in our Synagogue community, there are new landzleit being created in their lives each day, at our services, in our classes, at our meetings and our many affiliate groups. People with shared genealogical roots and others who begin as strangers, connecting to each other in special and memorable ways, caring for each other during times of joy and times of sadness. All of this results in that special kinship, the special feelings of being a landzman. There is a potential landzman nearby every time you enter the Synagogue, waiting to meet you. We want you to find each other. Who Is Your Landzman? F rom the Pulpit A MESSAGE FROM RABBI SKOFF

A Charter for Children’s Play(an excerpt from The Genius of Play by Sally Jenkinson)

Children play best:• When adults are watchful but not intrusive, when safe ground lends

courage to their discoveries and adventures.• When their trust in life is whole, when they welcome the unknown, and

are fearless.• When the world is shared with them. When there are places and spaces

they can make their own.• When their games are free from adult agendas and when their

transformations require no end-product.• When their senses are directly engaged with Nature and the elements.• When they are free to become gatherers, makers, and world creators in

their own times and in their own ways.• When they can play with others and make relationships.• When they can play alone, be solitary and private.• When they can become new selves through their play with others and in

their own imaginings.• When they can reveal themselves, their joys, sufferings and concerns,

without fear of ridicule, and when mystery and imagination are not denied by fact.

Since we’re all children at heart, my suggestion for each and every one of you – treat yourself to some play time; with your children, your grandchildren or the neighbor’s kids. Relax, have fun and enjoy!

Women’s Tallit ProjectPark’s Women’s Rosh Chodesh Group is spearheading

an effort to help women in the congregation make tallit for themselves and for others to use when attending services. Come help with the effort!

Tallit Sewing Session Sunday, February 27 • 3:00-5:30 pm at PSEWant to make your own tallit or help make one

for community use in our tallit racks? Come join us for an afternoon of preparing & sewing the tallitot. We especially need help from everyone with a portable sewing machine and some sewing skills, but all women are welcome to help.

Tzit Tzit Knotting and Tallit TraditionsMonday, March 14 7:30-9:00 pm at PSE

Learn to knot tzit tzit (fringes) on the tallitot and discover more about the history and traditions of wearing a tallit.

Donations to Park’s Nashim Fund for Women’s Programs of $10.00 per tallit are welcome to help support this project.

Please RSVP for either or both sessions to Ellen Petler at [email protected] or 216-371-2244 ext. 122. Please indicate the following: if you want to make a personal tallit, if you can come help make congregational tallitot, and/or if you own a portable sewing machine that you or someone else can use.

Johanna Goldfarb and Ilana Skoff are Co-Chairs of the Women’s Tallit Project.

A fascinating coming-of-age story, blended with a debate about the nature of art, follows the journey of a young Jewish painter torn between his Hasidic upbringing and his desperate need to fulfill his artistic promise.

We will arrange carpools to go to the Cleveland Playhouse for those interested.

Cost: $29.00 per ticket

Please note that there is an additional charge for parking in the Playhouse lot. Limited seats available. Make your reservations early! Open to women, men, & teens.

Prepaid reservations required by February 22nd. Questions to Ellen Petler at [email protected] or 216-371-2244 ext. 122.

To purchase tickets, please send a self-addressed stamped envelope, all names included in reservation, phone and email address, check payable to Park Synagogue, any seating requests for the theater, and if you would like to carpool to the show to: “Asher Lev,” Park Synagogue, 27500 Shaker Blvd., Pepper Pike, OH 44124 by February 22nd.

WITH Jeffrey SiegelSunday, March 6 • 3:00 pmCleveland State University’s Waetjen Auditoriumin the Music & Communication Building, Euclid Ave & 21st StreetCome for an afternoon of glorious music from the far north! Jeffrey Siegel will play rhapsodies and ballades of Brahms, tender lyric pieces and zesty Norwegian dances of Grieg, charming and deeply expressive short gems of Sibelius and the Danish master Carl Nielsen. Unique to Keyboard Conversations concerts, is the lively commentary that Siegel gives before he performs each piece to help the audience better understand the work and its composer and to make the music more meaningful. Come early and enjoy free refreshments and a CSU student performance at 2:15 pm in the Waetjen lobby.

Cost: $10/Park Members, $12/Guests (includes reserved seat for the concert)
