"Intellectual History of Religious Zionism" a Lunchtime Series with Rabbi Wolkenfeld

at the Chicago Loop Synagogue (16 South Clark Street)

Seventy years after the establishment of the State of Israel, support for Israel is a core component of the worldview of many religious Jews. It is part and parcel of the way that we understand Judaism itself. Yet Zionism, as an ideology, has been and remains controversial among Jewish communities with a competing allegiance to the primacy of Torah and Mitzvot. This class will explore the history of religious Zionism and its potential for the future.

Part II: January 24, 12:00 PM "Varieties of Religious Anti-Zionism"

Part III: February 14, 12:00 PM "Messianic Religious Zionism and Its Alternatives"

Cost is $15 for lunches by The Sandwich Club. To RSVP for this course, contact the Chicago Loop Synagogue office at 312-346-7370 or [email protected].

Laws of Niddah 5-Week Course with Rabbanit Sara Wolkenfeld Rabbanit Sara Wolkenfeld is offering a course beginning in January on the Laws of Niddah, which govern marital sexuality, menstruation, and mikvah as they exist in the Torah and are developed in rabbinic literature. The class meets at her home (745 W. Buckingham) for five weeks and covers all of the basic information needed for couples to observe Hilkhot Niddah.

The course is designed for couples who wish to prepare for married life and is also appropriate for couples who are already married and are looking to refresh their knowledge or incorporate Hilkhot Niddah into their marriage. This course, or an approved equivalent, is required for all conversion candidates who are in a relationship. This class is free to members of ASBI.

Rabbanit Sara Wolkenfeld has taught Hilkhot Niddah to couples since 2005 and has served as the director of the ASBI Mikvah since 2013. Please contact Sara Wolkenfeld at [email protected] with any questions or to enroll.

ISRAEL MOVIE NIGHTS

“Operation Eichmann” (1961)

Monday, January 7, 7:00 PM, 92 minutes

Adolf Eichmann, architect of Hitler’s heinous “final solution” which resulted in the murders of six million Jews, escapes Germany at the end of WWII. But two intrepid Israeli agents vow that he will not escape justice.

Released when the real-life Eichmann trial had the world riveted, the uncompromising “Operation Eichmann” tells the story of a Nazi zealot drunk on the power to send millions of his fellow human beings to their deaths in gas chambers. And it tells the story of Israeli agents David and Jacob, who miraculously survived one of Eichmann’s mass executions when they were children. A 15-year manhunt is on as Eichmann and his mistress hopscotch the globe, pursued by David, Jacob, and more dedicated Nazi-hunters, who sometimes wonder if it is better to kill than to capture Eichmann.

“Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg” (2009)

Monday, January 14, 7:00 PM, 92 minutes

“Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg” tells the humorous and eye-opening story of television pioneer Gertrude Berg. She was the creator, principal writer, and star of “The Goldbergs”, a popular radio show for 17 years, which became television’s very first character-driven domestic sitcom in 1949. On the air, Berg was the endearing matriarch Molly Goldberg—kibitzing with neighbors across airshafts in the Bronx (“Yoo-hoo, Mrs. Goldberg!”). Off air, Berg paved the way for women in the entertainment industry, winning the first ever Best Actress Emmy Award, earning a Tony on Broadway, and charming audiences on variety TV shows and through her advice column.

“Yoo Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg” includes fabulous, rare clips from “The Goldbergs” kinescopes, and other period TV shows and films including “The Ed Sullivan Show”, “The Honeymooners”, “The Perry Como Show”, “I Love Lucy”, “The Milton Berle Show”, and “The Marx Brothers”. The film also features marvelous interviews with historians and fans, including Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Ed Asner (“The Mary Tyler Moore Show”), Norman Lear (“All in the Family”), Gary David Goldberg (“Family Ties”), Andrea Roane (CBS anchor), Susan Stamberg (NPR correspondent), and many others.

Sponsored by the Israel Committee. Pizza, pop, popcorn, and chips will be served.

Infertility "Big-Brother / Big-Sister" Program Individuals or couples in the ASBI community struggling with infertility are invited to contact Rabbi Wolkenfeld for a confidential referral to a

veteran ASBI member who has also struggled with infertility and is willing to serve as a "big sibling" to offer friendship, support, and non-medical advice. Those interested in serving as a "big sibling"

should contact Rabbi Wolkenfeld.
