We dread the fear of the unknown. When life forces us to wait for answers we desperately desire, and uncertainty fills our minds, we can spend hours questioning aimlessly. Will I get the job? When will I find “the one?” Will she say yes? Is this the year? When will this pandemic finally end?

The Jewish people encounter the unknown in our Torah reading this week. Camped at Mount Sinai, the Children of Israel anxiously awaited the return of their leader Moshe Rabbienu from his conference with G-d at the top of the mountain. However, something went wrong. “Moshe delayed his descent from the mountain” (Shemot 32:1).

A faction of the nation panicked. “This man, Moshe who brought us up from Egypt - we don’t know what happened to him” (Shemot ibid.). The people could not deal with challenge of uncertainty. Despite Moshe’s instructions to the elders to wait until he returned (Shemot 24:14), they grew impatient and began to imagine all sorts of horrifying scenarios. Rashi (ad loc.) quotes the Midrash which suggests Satan even displayed the image of a “Moshe’s funeral bier” in the sky. They congregated around Aharon and demanded that he construct a replacement for Moshe. The frenzy resulted in the catastrophic sin of the Golden Calf.

What inspired this epic failure? What measures can we take to deal with “the unknown” in a healthier way? Rabbi Yaakov Mecklenburg (Ktav Vihakabbalah ad loc.) suggests that the children of Israel inaccurately portrayed Moshe’s thinking. They thought that Moshe remained on Mount Sinai under duress due to an unfortunate circumstance. However, Moshe actively chose to remain with G-d for a bit longer because he relished the unique opportunity to experience Divine Revelation. Perhaps, we could suggest the opposite. The Jews may have thought that their leader had chosen to remain on top of the Mount Sinai with G-d and had rejected them.

Ultimately, regardless of their thinking, the Jewish people’s failure emanated from a lack of self-confidence and faith. Instead of panicking or conjecturing about what had happened to Moshe, the Children of Israel needed to strengthen their belief in G-d and their confidence that if necessary, they could continue their journey even without Moshe.

We now live in a time of great uncertainty. We would all love to know when this pandemic will end, when things will return to “normal,” and how we will adapt to circumstances that constantly change. To deal with the unknown, we must acknowledge that we don’t control many aspects of our life. Our fate sometimes relies on the decisions of others. Sometimes our future is solely in the hands of G-d and human intervention is impossible. In response to the unknown, we must strengthen our self-confidence and our faith in Hashem. We must take pride in doing everything we can to help ourselves, our families and our community, and trust that Hashem will take care of the rest.
