let’s get on the water!

2011:Donald AdrainCommodore

Well folks, the time is drawing closer where we all begin to get a little twitchy, having made endless lists of the things we need to do to our boats, think about starting to do them, trim the list back, look at the list again, say “do I really need to do this?”. Trim back the list yet again and end up doing the absolute minimum and getting it back into the water feeling ever so guilty: Welcome to my world of boat maintenance and glad to see I am not alone in my minimalistic approach.......or am I? Anyhow its time that our club really begins to come back to life. This is when we all seem to come out of hibernation and we meet all those friends we have not seen at the club since last year - start sharing stories of the close season and forthcoming season and planning our sailing for the forthcoming year. Even if we only do half of them its guaranteed to be a good year.

The sailing calendars have all been pulled together for both keelboat and dinghies and a lot of good events planned both socially and competitively. Please take some time to have a look at them on our web site. Why not see how you can get involved and if there is anything you can do to help make them successful - if you have an idea then have a chat with a committee member and let’s see if we can make things happen.

We will be putting shouts out for work parties

as well as for regattas, training and social events so please dont be shy and do try and put yourself forwards......if we dont have volun-teers then things wont happen. The real watchword for this season has to be to try and involve and encourage as many new people as possible, both members and non members, to really get involved not only in the sailing but also in all of the other bits of the club business that keep our club running ;be it chatting to friends or colleagues at work and selling sailing as an affordable sport and trying to dispel the myth that its difficult and expensive. Get them to come along and give it a shot....why not take them out yourself and show them how much fun it is rounded off with a visit to the club house. If they seemed to en-joy themselves then steer them tactfully in the direction of the application form box, located adjacent to the main door, fill out the form for them and pass it on to Hugh, or membership secretary, for approval at comittee level fol-lowed by a hearty “wecome” from the club albeit with their pockets only a little lighter!! Training is available, albeit we are limited in the numbers we can handle, but hopefully we can try and encourage people to try and get involved be they kids or adults. Keep in mind its not all about formal training. We can take members out when we go out for a sail.......back to basics......getting out on the water....playing with dinghies and having a bit of fun.

Still a few key openings on the committee; we desperately need more people to become involved: we are still looking for a training co-ordinator. You dont need to be a fantastic sailor; just keen and relatively well organised and happy to speak to people. If this is something you can help with then please give me a shout. A few further new initiatives in progress; the committee are pulling together a plan for the club for the next few years - both monetary and otherwise. We would hope to identify areas we need to cover, thinking about things like repairs or replacement of the West Slip-way, upgrading the shore defences, improving the lighting and CCTV in the boat parks, etc. In this manner we can have a plan as to what we need to replace, and when, to keep the club facilities in a proper and safe condition over the next few years.

Once we have pulled this together we will place this on the web site along with all commitee meeting minutes, monthly budget reports and would hope that if we have missed a trick then suggestions would be forthcoming? Hope to see you on the water very soon and look forward to a good season.

As from Monday 7th February, 2011, the bar will operate during the hours listed beneath albeit with the caveats that should more than 10 people be in the bar at 10pm, or by previous arrangement and agreement with the committee, we then keep the bar open until 11pm. Private Bookings remain unchanged.

Monday – ClosedTuesday - Friday – 7pm to 10pmSaturday 12 noon to 10pm

Quiz Nights Clubhouse

On that very subject of training we have to say “Welcome” to our new Senior Instructor, Catriona MacDonald.

Catriona has been involved in sailing for many years and indeed “served her apprenticeship” at the club before heartlessly abandoning both ourselves and her pining parents to go to university. During the overly long breaks she became further involved in training and sailing, more seriously, and now having completed her four years of idle learning we are delighted to welcome her on-board where she will work closely with Cheryl, our currrent Senior Instructor - albeit Cheryl is taking a little more of a back seat... allegedly. Let’s wait and see eh?

Also on the topic of “Welcome” I would also like you to meet our new Vice Commodore, John Sim. John has been involved in sailing for a good number of years - both dinghies and keelboats, and I am sure you would join me in thanking him for stepping-up to the mark and taking on the challenge of picking up all of the bits and bobs that I happen to drop or have placed in the “too hard to do” drawer..... be assured....the drawer exists and is rapidly filling.

John is currently heading up a number of new initiatives we would hope to introduce to the organisation of the club and club house and we can hopeflly let you know about these once we have firmed up on the details.

DBSC at the Broo Musto Skiff Worlds - Melbourne, AUS

Gavin HomerIan Renilson and I were part of a 23-strong British team that headed out to do the first non-continental European championships at Black Rock Yacht Club south of Melbourne Australia.

As seen in last months mainsheet Ian managed to get out training in most condi-tions in December while I spent the time building snow men going to the panto and other family pre Christmas events. The Renilsons headed out just before Christmas to visit family in Tasmania before heading up to Queensland to spend New Year with Former member Jason Beebe in Brisbane which at that point had not been affected by the floods.

Meanwhile I headed out on the 2nd from Glasgow to get in to Melbourne aiming to be one of the first boats to get out on the water. Due to customs delays the containers turned up slightly later than expected and the majority of the European competitors had arrived to help unload them on the 5th and rig the boats whilst watching the Austral-ian sharpie class sailing in 20-25 knots of sea breeze, typical conditions for the venue but unfortunately it was the last of the weather for the next 7 days as the monsoon condi-tions further north affected the weather condi-tions.

Whilst Ian headed over I was able to get 3 practise sessions over the next 2 days with the first sail in six weeks being in 6-7 knots and 30 C temperature which built in the after-noon to 15 knots southerly. Friday was hot with temperatures reaching 40C whilst the wind was a strong northerly which died mid afternoon allowing some more Europeans out to get practise. As I was first to head out the club balcony filled with locals to watch how the Brits would cope heading out in 20knots onshore and a narrow fairway. No problems were the answer.

After a good sail it was time for the event briefing and an Aussie BBQ. This we found out was to be kangaroo, Sausages burgers and steaks which could be - washed down by the sponsors product Broo lager.

With the race officer warning the fleet that a front was going to come through the com-petitors headed home with the knowledge that it could be a tricky weekend for the preworlds as the winds could get up to 40knots.

Saturday morning everybody was down bright and early to meet the AP flag due to 30knots breeze and 40C temperature it was like a fan oven. At approximately 14:00 the breeze dropped to 10knots before backing to the southwest and increasing to 25knots with a temperature decrease of 15C all in the space of 15 minutes. The front had come through and as it increased up to 40knots rac-ing was cancelled and competitors reminded that it was a 9am start next day.

Day 2 and a 10-12 knot south westerly which built through the day allowed the fleet to get 4 races in. Ian’s training looked like it had paid dividends as he won the regatta with a 1, ocs,1, 2 result against all the top competitors to win the pre-worlds whilst I managed a 16th which with the pace of the fleet and having to go back in 1 start I was fairly pleased with.

That evening we had the pre worlds prize giving and also an ominous warning from the race officer that due to the weather forecast the first race was planned to start at 9am. Since the sharpies had 2pm starts for the previous week this was a bad omen for a long trying week for both the race management and competitors.

DBSC Mainsheet - February 2011 5www.dalgetybaysc.org

Tuesday 11 January: Day one of the world championships and after a long delay due to shifting winds 3 races in 8-12 knots were held. Along with a chop that made port tack tough, it was a trying day with both of us having a poor days results but looking for-ward to the forecast breeze on Wednesday. Wednesday 12 January: After a short post-ponement the fleet the fleet headed out to what turned out to be the windiest race of the regatta. Ian was in the leading pack at the first mark and was able to finish third meanwhile after having a poor first beat I had got back into the top ten before disaster struck as I was preparing to make my final gybe to the finish. I pitch poled and during the pitch pole I dislocated my right shoulder ( to go along with the left that I had dislocated several times and had surgery on).

The regatta was over for me. After being taken to hospital I was eventually given sedative so I was out whilst they reset it. Four hours later I was discharged by an ef-ficient medical team who have to deal with the incident fairly frequently due to the local kite surfers. On returning to the club I learnt that it was the only race of the day due to various squalls coming through and making it difficult to start another race.

Thursday 13 January: A long day on the wa-ter for the sailors whilst I spent the morning recovering from the sedative and painkillers Ian had a frustrating afternoon on the water with the wind shifting throughout the day - although by race 7 he had got back into gear and got a second.

Following the racing the club hosted a sea-food night which was going very well due to a large amount of sponsors product and a good range of seafood everything from oysters , calamari to deep fried fishtails. Unfortunately it all came to an abrupt end due to a power cut which for some was quite lucky while a few headed to the bars of St Kilda a popular bar and night club area ap-proximately 10 km north.

Friday 14th January: Lay day. Whilst Ian and Jane were taking Gillian back to the airport and moving accommodation, the majority of foreign competitors took an organised bus tour to Healsville wild life sanctuary unfor-tunately the weather was near monsoon conditions so most of the animals were try-ing to hide out of the rain . This was followed by wine tasting at domain chandon (Moet and chandon’s Australian headquarters) and lunch. As the weather cleared up we were

Hogmanay 2010

The club held a very well attended Hogmanay event in the Club House so thanks to all of those who attended, helped out with distributing the scran and tidying up, popping the Fizz corks, preparing the food and the club house and generally being all round good eggs.

Big thanks to the donor of the best raffle prize ever to cross the door of the club.....a Nintendo Wii Fit.... whatever fit is but Wii.. unused.... still in the box..... complete and cellophane intact...and legitimate with receipt... (bonus!!)

Raffle tickets sold like proverbial hot cakes; might have had something to do with the bar selling them for less than the unsuspecting punters circulating the room selling the very same tickets?.... always interesting to see how long it takes for the “Fifers” in the room to realise the blunder, cash in on the under priced tickets and then, and only then, revealing the monumental cock up thus minimising the competition. Fabulous business acumen guys and serious respect goes out to you however was equally entertaining to watch the reaction when the tickets sold by the bar failed to live up to their “lucky” status regards prizes. Big thanks to all those who ran up and down stairs balancing plates of stovies and chilli,

having consumed a couple of sherberts, and didnt spill a drop....major respect. Particularly amusing to watch the reaction of the punter-who wished “Broon Sauce” with his stovies .....the torrent of expletives from the kitchen serve as a reminder to us all of the selfless enthusiasm of volunteers very definitley having a finite limit.

The fireworks display, courtesy of Edinburgh Council, was a stunning sight from the deck-ing and it was fabulous to see the whole room empty on to the deck to shout “ooooh” and “aahhhh” when air borne incendiaries expoloded in a shower of colour, followed sec-onds later by the accompanying “BANG” and to listen to various Fathers frantically explaining the difference in speeds of sound and light, having consumed a couple of jars, and having forgotten their ropey Physics lessons from past decades....a joy forever to listen to the waffling and subsequent distraction with confectionery etc. Anyhow...a fabulous night and very very definitely something we as a club need to do on a more regular basis...any volunteers or ideas folks????

Shore UpdateAs outlined at last years AGM the club’s fleet of rescue craft are now requiring inclusion in a capital renewal program as they are not going to last for ever and have started to consume a degree of time and funds to maintain them. To this end it was agreed to that the Club should go for 2 new RIB’s and retain the current out-boards from the larger RIB (T4) and use these to provide us with 2 new mid size craft each running a 50hp outboard. There had been a significant amount of inves-tigation prior to the AGM with regards to pric-ing, specification and size of craft required. The market was reviewed at last month prior to the final spec and craft being outlined, ad-ditionally 3 of us made the 500 mile round trip to visit the manufacture prior to the finale deci-sion being agreed to. We have now placed the order for two of the following: - Humber Destroyer- 5m in length- Jockey console with 2 seats- White hulls and decks with grey tubes These will be fitted with new fixed VFH’s The expected delivery date for these is the start of April. The Club is looking to hold and run power boat “refresh” days to enable club members

Needless to say the club does not run itself and nor to do the buildings and kit keep themselves in working order for members to enjoy. For that a big thanks must be paid to the numerous working parties taking place throughout the year.

Particular thanks is due to Joyce Ross and her elite team of caterers who so often keep

French artist Julien Berthier has designed a fully functional boat to look as if it is sinking. The 6.5m (21ft) yacht was cut in half with a new keel and motor added so it remains in the sinking position while being fully functional. He describes it as “the permanent and mobile image of a wrecked ship that has become a functional and safe leisure object.”

Berthier has taken the boat (or should I say half-a-boat) across the English Channel to London and has toured it around Europe, getting plenty of offers of assistance from unwitting good Samari-tans, who would presumably be either very an-noyed or rather bemused by the contraption.

Saturday 15th January: With the sun out the conditions looked promising but the wind did not settle until mid afternoon. Race 8 and Ian had found his boat speed and strategy to lead through the finish, only to touch the committee boat and have to return to the course-side and complete a penalty-turn, which dropped him to 3rd. Following another delay as the sea breeze swung Ian was un-able to capitalize on the shifts and ended up 11th.

As racing finished and the sun was out the breeze swung to the south west and slowly built. The typical Melbourne weather had at last decided to come out to play. While the rest of the competitors relaxed on the club balcony Ian stayed out to let some Contend-er sailors he knew have a go of the boat and also to enjoy some sailing in the condi-tions we had expected to meet.

with the outcome of the championship in the balance I decided to go out and watch the sailing so after another postponement we headed out to see the last 2 races. Race 10 and Ian was in the lead group ending up 5th although the race winner had the biggest lead of the event winning the race by over 2 minutes. In race 11 Ian was in-dividually recalled so ended up with an ocs but with various wind shifts and the short chop coming in he came off the water feel-ing he had a poor race. Following racing it was time to pack up.

Monday 17th: Home Time; With an early start to finish packing the container and an early a late night for several competi-tors it was a rather subdued group who packed up the container before either catch-ing flights home to get pack to the re-alities of work or for a lucky few another week touring round Australia before head-ing home.

Overall results: Ian Renilson: 9th overall/ 1st Grand Master

A meeting of the dinghy sailing sub-commit-tee – open to all members – was held on 17 February in order to finalise plans for the 2011 season. Amongst the attendees were Ronnie Millar, Ian Renilson, Iain Baillie, Gavin MacKinnon, Pete Taylor, Brian & Fiona Greer, Lionel Booth, Rhodri Thomas, and Paul Davies.

The main points to emerge from the meeting were:

1. Confirmation that the Brass Monkey on 2 April will be 3 short races with one discard, from a shore start.

2. The new Sprint Series, open to non-members, will be on the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday of Youth Week. (i.e. 26 to 28 July). This exciting new event will have a 7 pm start and 2 short races, with 4 races counting for the series. The final night will coincide with Youth Week barbeque night. An entry fee, to be finalised, will be charged.

The regular training throughout the year is in need of new helpers and instructors. If you can spare a few hours each week and are keen to help others to learn the sport please contact the training team. There are many ways to assist from taking someone out

Sailing Review3. Iain Baillie introduced a range of different types of racing and events for the Special Saturday series – slalom events, team racing events, sail with an expert sessions were some of the suggestions. More information to follow when the planning is completed.

4. Novice racing – dedicated starts for the Wednesday series 2 and 3 events.

5. Wednesday Series 2 – This will have a 7.15 pm start, and 2 short races – a new format to use the light summer evenings more effectively, with racing on smaller courses.

6. A few changes to the sailing instructions affecting the start line and average lap time finishing rules were discussed and agreed. These will be notified in the new S.I.’s and put on separate notices in the Race Box. Ronnie Millar, Sailing Secretary

Tuesday night sessions will run for a block of nine weeks (May-June) with the 28th June being the final one. Those who have ad-vanced enough to sailing competently on their own will have the opportunity to take part in Wednesday night racing.

There will be a supply of instructors available to take out those wanting to race but apprehensive to do it alone.

Hopefully by compacting the sessions to nine week the candidates will be more focused on achieving and practicing the basic sailing knowledge to allow them to continue on their own accord.

The Wednesday evening novice racing will run from 8th June – 24th August (series 2 and 3). If there is enough demand to do so,

On the 16th June the Scottish RNLI will hold its AGM and award presentations in Perth where Beattie Burnside out Treasurer will be awarded a gold bar to add to her gold badge in recognition of her 30 years service to fundraising. Beattie set up the Dalgety Bay fundraising branch in 1981 and since its inau-guration our branch has raised £100,000 for the Lifeboats. Also Kinghorn RNLI Lifeboat Station was delighted to hear that former Operations Manager Charlie Tulloch has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours. The MBE was in recognition of his service to the RNLI at Kinghorn for over 40 years. Congratulations to both.

Twice a year the RNLI organise an abseil off the Forth Rail Bridge and plans are already being made for this year’s events on 8th May

Evening Training in 2011novice starts can be run on a Sunday too.

Registration for Training is changing this year to make it as fair as we possibly can. Registration forms will be posted on DBSC Website. All forms will need to be brought to the club on Tuesday 29th March between 7.30pm and 9pm where SI’s/admin team will check forms for completeness such as previous experience and medical details etc. In early April a Ballot will be held to fill all spaces for Tuesday night training – Commodore will be present to ensure that no preferential treatment is given. All interested parties will be informed of successful or otherwise outcome of ballot. Cheryl Taylor, Senior Instructor (Outgoing)

and again in October. Participants need to raise at least £75 for the RNLI and the mini-mum age is 16. If you know anyone who is keen to make this daring 50m descent please get in touch with Mike on 823279 and we will make sure you don’t miss out.

In January on the Lifeboats SOS day Dalgety Bay organised a Jazz evening and raised over £300. We are planning another evening in October, this time featuring a welcome return of Crooked Jack. More details later in the year.

Our lifeboat service is funded by voluntary donations and with a greater demand on our lifesaving service we need more help than ever. In 2009 our volunteer lifeboat crews launched 9,223 times and rescued 8,235 people, making it our busiest year ever. Since 1980 our lifeboat services have doubled and the cost of running the RNLI amounts to £405,000 per day. This would not have been possible without help such as yours. Thanks again. Mike Hudspeth
