BeYC inc. Commodore’s Report – December 2013

Condolences to the Van der Voorden family on the passing of long time and much loved club member, Dirk. Thanks to all the members who helped pay tribute to Dirk over two weekends recently at the club and in this edition of Mainsheet. We’ve had many stories shared over the last few weeks about Dirk’s colorful life and what has stood out is that his generosity, sense of humor and friendship will be long remembered.

Thanks to Russell and Steve for coordinating and all the volunteers who helped out on a very successful Discover Sailing Day. We had over 50 participants enjoy sailing free of charge and all the feedback will provide for an even better event next time. If you’d like to be involved in planning and staging our 2014 Discover Sailing Day, please contact Russell.Mainsheet December 2013! Page 4

I was invited to attend the Commodore’s Cocktail Party during Sail Melbourne week at Sandringham YC recently and spoke to various Commodores from across the state. What I took away is that we are doing things pretty well and that Sailability really is a shining star for our Club. One fellow mentioned that he had heard positive things from YV about the Sailability Bendigo program and they were hoping to get something similar up and running. The next Sailability Bendigo day is scheduled for 13 January 2014 at BeYC so please contact Lauren at Sports Focus if you can assist. Thanks to all those members who are involved for the great work you do – I know you get back more than you put in.

Thanks to Ian Middleton who has taken on the role within the Sailing Committee to look after club power boats. If you become aware of any maintenance needs for these boats or if you would like a demonstration on their use, please get in touch with Ian, or Phil, directly.

The Sailing School committee has several programs running over the school holiday period, so please tell your friends and encourage them to come along. You can contact Col or Mick for more information and there are also some flyers near the canteen at the club, which you can take and pass around. Thanks to Helen for her work with the Sailing School this season and please contact Col if you would like to get involved in the Sailing School committee.

A recent report of vandalism at the club reminds us that safety and security is everyone’s responsibility. Please ensure your belongings are kept safely and that you don’t leave valuables around unattended. With the lake becoming busier over the warmer months and during the holiday season, don’t hesitate to speak up if something doesn’t seem right.

Also, just a reminder about snakes at the club. We have had reports of brown snakes around the site in the past so please be careful around garden beds, long grass, rocks and old tyres that are often used to rest boats on near the foreshore.

Thanks to the catering committee and Russ for putting on a fantastic evening on December 7th with happy hour and BBQ for new members. With great company, perfect weather, some tunes playing in the background as the sun set, I couldn’t help but wonder when Mr Kerrigan was going to stop by and ask ‘how’s the serenity’. Thanks to Rob for his work as catering rep on the general committee this season and thanks to Cath for taking up the role with catering. Steve Phillis has accepted an invitation to be involved in the General Committee. Steve has done a great job redeveloping our website and I look forward to working with Steve on various other club projects.

We have two functions left this year and your help would be appreciated. These are the Christmas Party and the New Years Eve party, so if you would like to help, please contact me. Events coming up in the new year include the Australia Day Regatta and various trophy races. Please get in touch with Phil for more information or if you can help out.

With the Christmas break upon us, I’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2014. I hope you have safe travels wherever you are heading and I hope you get to spend it with loved ones. Hopefully all the kids have been nice and Santa comes too!

Cheers, Sam HawkinsCommodore

Vale Dirk van der Voorden

~

It is with much sadness that the Bendigo Yacht Club said good-bye to Dirk van der Voorden. Dirk was loyal Bendigo Yacht Club member since 1964, a highly competitive sailor and mentor to many. He passed away on 16 November 2013 at the age of 88.

The high level of esteem that Dirk enjoyed at The Club was represented by present and past Club members who attended the memorial service at Packenham, where the celebrant spoke of his extraordinary life and great passion for sailing.

The flag was flown at half mast and a minute silence was observed at The Club on Saturday 16 November, 2013 and a celebration and sail past was held on 30 November.

You won’t be forgotten at Lake Eppalock, Dirk.

Phillip MannSailing Committee

From the Vice Commodore

This month I'm going to skip my Sailing Rules column and comment on three areas.

First I wanted to report on the recent Discover Sailing Day. Simply it was fantastic with lots of members to help, perfect weather, a great venue and over 52 visitors who tried a number of various sailing experiences. Our members and visitors were also treated to music, a barbecue, face painting and more.

Whilst the point of the day was to open our club to the public and let them experience sailing on various classes of boats, and this we did very well, the other really nice thing that became evident was that our own members got to know other members they had not met previously. This lead to a very enjoyable day for all concerned and I'm sure, although allot of work, everyone had fun.

There were a lot of people helping on the day and in the lead up to the day. I would take up a full page if I was to thank each of them so I will just give a massive thank you to everyone who helped out in making this such a great day for our club, it's members and the visitors who I'm sure are still talking about the day.

Second I would like to thank all the members who attended the ‘new members night’ last Saturday. It was a great night with lots of friendly chat, lots of yummy food, and a drink or two. I would also like to thank the new members who attended and for allowing us to get to know each of you a little better.

As always these events don't just happen without allot of preparation and work. Once again many people worked behind the scenes to make this happen and I would like to thank each and every one of them. I am also hoping we organize similar events on a regular basis, not to only welcome the new members but also for the enjoyment of all members.

Finally I would just like to remind all sailors of the importance of life jackets. On a few occasions I've seen members both using the power boats and their own yachts without wearing life jackets and I have also seen members wearing life jackets off the Arc. The last thing want is to loose a member due to a PFD that no longer can support the owner in a time of need. I know how this Mainsheet December 2013! Page 8

feels as I was wearing my old favorite PDF as it was slim fitting and weighed very little when I was knocked of my boat and lost contact in the middle of Port Phillip Bay. It was a very rough day and I was having trouble keeping my head above the water due to breaking waves. Luckily I was rescued by another yacht but not until I had become very concerned. I latter tested the old jacket and found it hardly held itself above the water let alone me with we clothing.

If anyone thinks their jacket is getting a bit old, please think about replacing it with an approved PDF that is the correct fit. Hopefully you will never need it but you will be more than grateful if you ever do.

Happy sailingRussellVice Commodore

Thanks Russell we certainly don’t want to lose members because their life jackets were dodgy – there’s way too much paperwork! Ed

Pacers for Sale

As members are aware, the club is planning to replace the existing Pacer fleet at the end of this season. Therefore, we have 4 or perhaps 5 pacers for sale.

Expressions of interest have been received from several members, but we now need to firm up the arrangements so here is our proposal:

• Four pacers are for sale at $3,000 each;• There is a fifth pacer, which has been repaired after hull damage, $2,000;• $500 deposit is required now, to secure your boat; commitment to proceed with purchase

and balance are due at the end of this season;• The boat will be handed over to the buyer fully seaworthy with all fittings etc serviceable;• The boat will be made available to the school for the remainder of this season;• The purchaser may use their boat, at no charge, for racing on Saturday afternoons for the

remainder of the season;• Boats are to be selected by buyers in order of deposits received.

If you have any questions, please contact:Boat condition and inspection – Mick Floyd 0409414777 [email protected] arrangements – Hugh Drummond 0418565614 [email protected]

BeYC Polo Shirts for sale at The Canteen

We have some polo shirts in royal blue/ gold or navy /gold for sale at the canteen. Prices are $35 for adult sizes and $25 for children. If we do not have your size we can order one for you.

We are wondering if anyone would be interested in purchasing a sun smart long sleeved polo shirt. If so, could you please let us know and we will look into the cost of them.

Mainsheet December 2013! Page 9

From the Catering Coordinator

Many thanks to everyone who has helped in The Canteen over the past month and to the many people who have offered their help.

Lunches: Please place your orders early so that The Canteen can have them ready and waiting

Christmas Party – Sat 21 Dec 2013: It would be helpful to know how many children will be attending the Club Christmas Party after sailing on Saturday 21st December.

Australia Day Regatta – Sat 25th –Mon 27th 2014: It would be great to have as many helpers as possible for this major event. The Canteen will be open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks from Saturday morning to midday Monday. If you are going to be at the club during that weekend, your help would be appreciated.

We are formulating a roster for the January to April 2014 period. A copy of it is at The Canteen if you would like to choose the dates and times you are available to help.

New Years Eve/Day Celebrations: Come out to the club and celebrate New Year’s Eve or come out and enjoy a sail on New Years Day. For both these activities it’s BYO everything.

Sailing School Report

Hi all, This current program is coming to an end and by the looks of all participants, there has been plenty of enjoyment all around. One thing that we all learn very early in our sailing career is that the sport is weather dependent, and some Saturday’s have been a little too windy for some of our new sailors. Don’t forget that the number one rule is to always check out the weather conditions, and not to go out in weather that is beyond your competency.

Final Session and Graduation – Saturday 21 December

The current program concludes on Saturday 21 December with a Barbecue and Graduation. Meat and bread and onions will be provided by the club. All participants and their families are invited to attend. Please bring a plate to share.

Next Program

The dates of the Post-Christmas Program are: • Saturday February 8, 15, 22, March 1, 15, 22, April 5 & 12. If you wish to participate,

please complete the attached form and either email back to me, or hand in at the canteen.

We are planning on scheduling the following programs. Please check with your instructor which program would best suit you:

• 9:30 am - Start Sailing 1 & Better Racing• 11:00 am - Start Sailing 2 & Better Sailing

The cost of all programs is again $50 for members. Please organise payment with registration either by cheque or cash (delivered to the canteen in an envelope clearly marked) or by direct deposit into the following account:

Pacer Purchase Project

We have finally got sufficient pledges for the Kangaroo Flat Community Enterprise! Thanks to all that helped round these up.

Mick and I went to the presentation where we received a cheque for $5,500, which is a great boost to our fundraising efforts for The Project. Other sponsors include:

•McKern Steel - $5,000•City of Greater Bendigo - $1,650 •Fosterville Gold - $2,000

Remember that there is a collection tin in the canteen for all your loose change.... however, folding currency is also acceptable.

And Finally, a Fond Farewell

This will be my last report for Mainsheet, as I will not be continuing as Sailing School Coordinator. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the instructors – They are an amazing team of young enthusiastic people who I have enjoyed working with immensely. Also thank you to all participants – It has been a joy to meet you all and in many situations, welcome you into the club.

The club is now looking for someone who is willing to assist in this role. If you are prepared, then please let me know and I will offer every assistance, until you get the hang of it. And... it’s not tooo hard!!

Good luck with your sailing, and I’ll seeya on the water.

And a Big thank you for the great job you’ve been doing, establishing and coordinating the BeYC Sailing School, Helen. Seeya on the water for sure! Ed.

Campaspe River Cruiseby Jenny Coulson

Geebung Cruise No 3By the old Campaspe River, where the breezes shake the grass,There's a row of little gravestones that the stockmen never pass,For they bear a crude inscription saying, “Stranger, drop a tear,For the Cuff and Collar players and the Geebung boys lie here."And on misty moonlit evenings, while the dingoes howl around,You can see their shadows flitting down that phantom polo ground; You can hear the loud collisions as the flying players meet,And the rattle of the mallets, and the rush of ponies' feet,Till the terrified spectator rides like blazes to the pub -He's been haunted by the spectres of the Geebung Polo Club.A.B. Patterson

It was another beautiful spring day when 4 trailer-sailers left Bendigo Yacht Club amidst the hubbub of race preparations. With Eppalock at about 88% and the wind almost on the nose, we zigzagged up the lake and the sailors amongst our group revelled in the brisk conditions. This was our third Geebung cruise and our destination was to go as far as we could up the Campaspe. Perhaps this time we would find a hint of the existence of Patterson’s polo players. Cruisers on this trip were Craig in his Explorer, Ken and me in the Farr, Shamrock, Brian in the Hartley, The Governor and Greg and Helen in the Sonata, Bumblebee, with a blue canoe in tow.

We waited at the junction of the Coliban and Campaspe Rivers for our little group to reform and continued on up the lake. At the start of the river we motored on, past our previous campsites. The river narrowed considerably and tree forks housed rubble as evidence of major floods. A large flock of pelicans stood sentry on a sharp bend and

cockatoos voiced their displeasure at our passing. With our depth sounder guiding us we made our way up into a deep gorge passing sheer rock faces that plunged into the river. Finally our passage was blocked – rapids. We had reached our destination.

Mainsheet December 2013! Page 15

We back–tracked a few hundred metres, pulled up to a sandy bank and made camp. Wallabies bounded off, through purple Patterson’s Curse, and Greg took on the fire lighting duties. Tara and Max (Greg and Helen’s little mates) amused themselves digging holes and chasing sticks, and Craig attempted to catch his tea. Unsuccessfully, I might add.

Night fell quickly and quietness surrounded us. The “plop” of fish jumping was the only thing that broke the silence. OK – they were carp, but the sound seemed to add

to the serenity. As the full moon rose above the gorge it was easy to imagine those Geebung boys on their steaming mounts galloping across the ridges. Was there a ‘presence’ felt among us? No, just our imagination – or was it?

Morning greeted us and we drifted off to fulfil our individual agendas. Greg and Helen stayed on. They had plans to take the canoe beyond the rapids to explore the river further. What did they find? Aah – that’s another story that only they can tell.

The Campaspe flows though farmland, into the gorge and on into very rugged bushland. Its magic country right on our doorstep and even if

you don’t find evidence of Patterson’s famous ballad, the cruise is well worth doing.

There are several cruises to various destinations planned for next year. Please contact Ken Coulson on 5435 3380 if you’re interested.

Thanks for another great story Jenny. Reckon the Cruising Division better keep on looking for The Bard’s elusive Polo Club! Ed.

Out of Africa

There’s no doubting the natural beauty of Cape Town harbour, with Table mountain looming as a backdrop. Anthony Wall spent a week exploring the city recently, which he described as ‘vibrant and exciting’ with the cloud draped over the flat mountaintop ‘as a tablecloth, like a cotton wool overlay’.

A trip on the tourist bus provided another staggering impression when Anthony encountered the boats from the Clipper Round the World Race entering the harbour. ‘They made their way into an inner harbour, past moorings where multi-million dollar yachts were moored,’ he said.

Mainsheet December 2013! Page 17

The clippers had struck heavy weather, then they were caught in the doldrums before rounding the Cape of Good Hope so a few days restocking at Cape Town provided a festive break from the race. ‘There were 35 or so crew on each, and the amount of gear they took on board was amazing,’ said Anthony.

All up, 12 70-foot stripped down racing yachts were competing in the race with applications for crewing positions, advertised as The Race of Your Life, available to anyone. Each boat also carried the logo of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust, which was a major cause that the race supported.

After leaving Cape Town the fleet struck further heavy weather en route to Australia, where they docked at Albany before continuing on to Sydney, Hobart, Brisbane and then Singapore. Full details of the event can be found at https://www.clipperroundtheworld.com/

Thanks for these great photos and the first hand account of the event Anthony! Ed.
