• Malcolm little was born on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska

• He changed his last name to Malcolm X in 1952.

• Occupation: Civil Rights Activist• Also known as “el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz”

Malcolm’s background • Malcolm’s mother, Louise Norton Little, was a homemaker • Malcolm’s father, Earl Little, was a Baptist minister and an avid supporter of Black

Nationalist• 8 children in total• Earl’s civil rights activist created death threats from the organization Black

Legion, forcing the family to move twice before Malcolm's fourth birthday• He lived a horrible life• His father was killed for being a supporter of Marcus Garvey, a Black Nationalist

leader• In 1837, Louise left emotionally unstable and was sent to a mental hospital • Malcolm and his 7 siblings were then separated into foster homes and institutions.

Why is Malcolm considered a leader?

• Malcolm wanted to help give Civil Rights to African Americans

• He wanted to do something more than to just to talk to the white people, he was willing to use violence if necessary

• This act attracted many African American believers and probably hastened the Civil Rights Movement

How does Malcolm’s background affect his leadership skills ?

► Malcolm’s childhood made him the man he was back then

► After his father died he moved to the ghetto► He was then sent to prison for burglary and fell in

the footsteps of Elijah Muhammad, leader of the Lost-Found Nation of Islam

Malcolm’s followers He gathered himself a handful of followers

all from the ghetto.

Leadership skills > Other leaders Malcolm influenced many other leaders

who gave guidance of the black power era He wanted segregation to stop, but by any

needs necessary, which means it can result to violence if needed

sometimes comes back and refers them as “white devils”

Leadership Capacity He worked to give his followers what they

needed and he did this without trying to take his followers money out their pockets

His leadership capacity ended in February 21, 1965

Malcolm’s leadership power came to an end He was assassinated The 39 year old leader was shot to death, as he

was giving a speech, by three men who were members in the Nation of Islam at the Manhattan's Audobon Ballroom
