MALIA PUKA O KALANI CATHOLIC CHURCH

Parish Pastoral Plan 2015 - 2020

Parish Mission Statement: “Malia Puka O Kalani is a Roman Catholic parish in Keaukaha, Hawaii, dedicated to building a church community, filled with the Holy Spirit, guided by God’s Word, and enriched by the Hawaiian culture.” Parish Information: The Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1921, dedicated a portion of the former crown lands of Hawaii for use by Native Hawaiians. In 1928, the Hawaiian Homes Commission authorized the establishment of a Roman Catholic Church in the Keaukaha Homestead area. The church became Malia Puka O Kalani, (“Mary, Gate of Heaven”). Keaukaha is a section of Hilo, bordered on one side by the Hilo Bay and on the other side by the Hilo International Airport. The area covers six hundred acres.

In 1934, the parish, under the care of the Sacred Heart Fathers built a large hall on the property which was used as a place of worship and as a community center. The existing church building, which seats one hundred twenty people, was constructed in 1940.

The parish is under the direction and care of the Diocese of Honolulu with Most Reverend Clarence Silva as the Local Ordinary and Reverend Father Oliver Ortega as its Pastor-Administrator. The parish currently has over 160 households registered and our 2015 Mass attendance count is shown below:
