CHANGES TO OUR BULLETIN  For many years Karen Hotniansky has tirelessly worked as a volunteer to help St. Joseph Parish and Malia Puka O Kalani Parish by coordinating the bulletin. While Fr. Thomas was our Pastor our bulletin became much bigger and brighter and thus became even more of a challenge and one that Karen gladly managed. Karen has also been the driving force behind our web-site reconstruction as our webmaster and design expert. Karen has decided to retire from the bulletin coordinating tasks and so this issue is the last that she will be doing for us. Words cannot express our gratitude for her many hours of dedi-cation and hard work. Because of this change Fr. Samuel has asked that our bulle-tins be reformatted to help keep the costs down so beginning with the November 7 issue the following changes will be made: Malia will begin producing their own bulletin and will no longer be incorporated in the St. Joseph bulletin. The St. Joseph bulletin will be condensed to a 4-page format. Michael and Anna Texeira will still be handling the printing of our bulletins and Karen will continue to be the webmaster for our website. Once again our thanks to Karen Hotniansky for a job well done!

October 31, 2010 (Thirty‐first Sunday in Ordinary Time.)

I once heard some advice for writers on how to make a story more dramatic. "Get your character up in a tree," the advice goes, "and throw rocks at him." The advice isn't meant literally, but rather it's about how a character in jeopardy is always a good source of drama.

Well Saint Luke, author of today's Gospel passage, seems to have taken at least a part of that advice literally. It's the famous tale of Zacchaeus, who was short of stature and so needed a higher perch to see Jesus pass by.

But it's really the grace of God that's creating the drama here—a dramatic act of repen-tance. Even before Jesus comes on the scene, Zacchaeus is determined to see him. What led this wealthy tax collector—an unpopular figure in the town of Jericho—to be interested in Jesus? And even more, what moved him to a radical divesting of half his possessions, and a promise to over-compensate anyone he may have defrauded? It can only be grace!

And it gives you and me an important reminder. God is at work in the most unlikely of ways, and in people we may least expect to change. Repentance like that was—and is—the mission of Jesus. Let's welcome his invitation to stay with us, in our daily lives.

Feast of All Saints The earliest certain observance of a feast in honor of all the saints is an early fourth-century commemoration of "all the martyrs." In the early seventh century, after succes-sive waves of invaders plundered the catacombs, Pope Boniface IV gathered up some 28 wagonloads of bones and reinterred them beneath the Pantheon, a Roman temple dedi-cated to all the gods. The pope rededicated the shrine as a Christian church. According to Venerable Bede, the pope intended "that the memory of all the saints might in the future be honored in the place which had formerly been dedicated to the worship not of gods but of demons."

On the Calculation of Time But the rededication of the Pantheon, like the earlier commemoration of all the martyrs, occurred in May. Many Eastern Churches still honor all the saints in the spring, either during the Easter season or immediately after Pentecost. How the Western Church came to celebrate this feast in November is a puzzle to historians. The Anglo-Saxon theolo-gian Alcuin observed the feast on November 1 in 800, as did his friend Arno, Bishop of Salzburg. Rome finally adopted that date in the ninth century.

Feast of All Souls The Church has encouraged prayer for the dead from the earliest times as an act of Christian charity. "If we had no care for the dead," Augustine noted, "we would not be in the habit of praying for them." Yet pre-Christian rites for the deceased kept such a strong hold on the superstitious imagination that a liturgical commemoration was not ob-served until the early Middle Ages, when monastic communities began to mark an an-nual day of prayer for the departed members. In the middle of the 11th century, St. Odilo, abbot of Cluny (France), decreed that all Cluniac monasteries offer special prayers and sing the Office for the Dead on November 2,

the day after the feast of All Saints. The custom spread from Cluny and was finally adopted throughout the Roman Church. The theological underpinning of the feast is the acknowledgment of hu-man frailty. Since few people achieve perfection in this life but, rather, go to the grave still scarred with traces of sinfulness, some pe-riod of purification seems necessary before a soul comes face-to-face with God. The Council of Trent af-firmed this purgatory state and in-sisted that the prayers of the living

can speed the process of purification. Superstition still clung to the observance. Medieval popular belief held that the souls in purgatory could appear on this day in the form of witches, toads or will-o’-the-wisps. Graveside food offerings supposedly eased the rest of the dead. Observances of a more religious nature have sur-vived. These include pub-lic processions or private visits to cemeteries and decorating graves with flowers and lights. This feast is observed with great fervor in Mexico.

Malia Puka O Kalani MISSION STATEMENT

Malia Puka O Kalani is a Roman Catholic parish in Keaukaha, Hawaii, dedi-cated to building a church community filled with the Holy Spirit, guided by God's word, and enriched by the Hawaiian culture.

ALL SAINT’S AND ALL SOUL’S DAY: The Church has set aside November 1 and 2 as special days to remember the people who have gone before us and on whose shoulders we stand. While there are two separate days, it is not an accident that the feasts immediately follow each other. It is like one coin with two sides. This is really one feast with two perspectives. The first perspective (ALL SAINT’S DAY, NOV 1) is a celebration of all our loved ones who are presently enjoying the full glory of heaven. This is the feast of those people who will never be canonized saints, like our great grandparents, grandpar-ents, parents, the wonderful people who lived and loved centuries before us. We celebrate the fact that they have reached the full goal of their lives: to live in the house of the Lord. The sec-ond perspective (ALL SOUL’S DAY, NOV 2) is also a day of remembering. However, this is a day of prayer and intercession. We pray for our loved ones who have passed from our sight but are still being cleansed by the blood of Christ so that they too will experience the fullness of God’s glory. The process that happens after death is a mystery to us on earth. We really don’t know who of our loved ones are already experiencing the fullness of God’s glory and which ones need our prayers and intercessions. Therefore, we have one feast with two perspectives. There will be a simple Mass on Monday, All Saints Day at 5:15PM. There will be a more solemn cele-bration of Mass and a ceremony of remembering on Tuesday, All Souls Day at 5:30PM. THE “LITTLE CHOIR”: As Joe Farias states so often, the real choir at Malia is the congregation. The “little choir” exists to facilitate the music of the real choir. And they do a magnificent job for which we all need to express our gratitude. Everyone is welcome to join the “Little Choir.” If you can sing and/or play an instrument, you would be a very welcome addition. All you need to do is attend the weekly practice. The practices are on Wednesday or Thursday evening at 5:30PM. The evenings of practice change because of Joe’s work schedule (he is a fireman). If you are interested and willing to make this commitment to our parish worship, please contact Joe at 982-5919. BECOMING “GREEN”: The goal is to get rid of the weekly blue binders containing the Mass music. Instead, the words of the hymns and the Mass prayers will be projected on the wall. This is a “work in progress”. Please feel free to give your comments regarding the process to Joe Farias (982-5919). RELGIOUS EDUCATION: The religious education program at Malia is going strong. Parents should feel welcome to visit the class of your son/daughter to witness firsthand the wonderful work being done by the teachers and Wendy Cortez, Director. The schedule for November is:Sunday, November 7: Class for K thru 8 only, Wednesday, November 10: Grades 9 – 12. This is a “sleep-over” starting Wednes-day evening at 7:00PM. The students are asked to report to the church hall. Bring a sleeping bag, pillow, change of clothes, and a snack to share. The sleep-over ends on Thursday at 12:00 noon when the students should be picked up. FUND RAISER: Some ladies of the parish are planning a small Christmas Craft sale to people in the Keaukaha area. The coordina-tor is Luanna Leite. They are requesting donations of any and all crafts. These are to be homemade and new (no used articles or antiques). The date of the craft sale will be soon after Thanksgiving. Please talk with Luanna for further details. All craft donations can be brought to the church. 100% of the proceeds go to the church.

They are also planning a SWEET BREAD sale for Thanksgiving. The breads will be available on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Tickets will be avail-able next Sunday. They are hoping that parishioners will sell tickets for the bread and not necessarily feel obliged to buy the bread yourself……unless, of course, you want Sweet Bread for Thanksgiving. The price of the Sweet Bread will be $6.00. $3.00 from each sale will be do-nated to the church.
