1 - PS/2 ConnectorsATX boards have 2 PS/2 connectors, one for the mouse and one for the keyboard. They

are the same size the same shape but a different colour. This is because the Mouse and

keyboard connectors are not interchangeable. Plugging the keyboard in to the mouseconnector and vice versa will make them both useless. The usual way for these to be

plugged in is the mouse into the Green connector and the keyboard into the purple

connector.

2 - USB (Universal Serial Bus) PortsUSB is getting more and more popular for external components. So much so that you can

even buy external USB hard disks now. The big hype about USB as that you can change

the devices on the USB without switching the power off the computer. If you have a

mouse and a Scanner plugged into USB for example, and you wanted to play your new

game on your USB controller, you could unplug your Scanner and plug in your gamecontroller. The system would then recognise the change and let you use the controller

straight away. You will normally get 2 USB ports with an option to add an extra 2 via a

cable.

3 - Parallel PortThe parallel port is mainly used for scanners and printers, and is associated with LPT1.

Parallel ports send data in parallel i.e. more than one bit at a time. If the channel is 8bits

wide then a parallel port would send 8 bits at a time. Parallel ports are fast becoming

extinct as the USB port takes over the purpose of this port.

4 - Game Port

The Game port is really just a serial port normally found on a sound card. as the picture

above has onboard sound in order to show you everything an ATX motherboard can have

on it, the game port is above the sound connectors. Gamepads and joysticks plug into the

game port. The game port is a female connector and larger than that of the standard COM

port.

5 - Sound card ConnectorsThe Sound card that is built into the board has three connectors, these are Speaker out,

this is your main output for your computer speakers, depending on your sound chip you

may or may not need powered speakers. Check with the motherboard manual for this.

Then you will have the Line in, Line in is for external sources of audio that you want to

hear through your computer or possibly record, i.e. from your Hi-Fi. The last of the 3 is

the Mic in port. This is for the Microphone. The Microphone can again be used to add

sound to recording or just to play through your speakers as a karaoke system.

6 - Display ConnectorThis motherboard also has onboard graphics, if this is the case with your motherboard

then you will have this connector on your motherboard. The Display connector (VGA

Connector) is also female (meaning the pins will be on the end of the monitor cable.) If

you have a VGA graphics card then this connector will be on the back of your graphics

card.

7 - COM (communications) PortThe COM port is used for peripherals such as mice and modems, becoming less popular

now though as USB and PS/2 have taken over. Motherboards seem to only have the 1 or

no COM ports now in favor of more USB ports.

General system requirements and recommendations

This topic specifies the minimum hardware configurations required by Discovery Studio andthe operating systems on which Discovery Studio is supported. In general, the better the

hardware configuration of your computer, the better your experience with Discovery Studio

will be.

To achieve a more satisfying experience with Discovery Studio, particularly in terms of the

client software, it is highly recommended that your system be substantially better than the

minimum requirements specified in the following sections. This is particularly true if running

server software locally on the same system as the client software.

Attention to the following areas can make a significant improvement to your overall user

experience and enjoyment of the software:

Memory - the more RAM your computer has, the better.

CPU speed - the faster, the better.

A high quality OpenGL graphics card can make a significant difference to the graphics

performance.

The higher the display resolution, the more flexibility you have in displaying and

managing document and dialog windows. Mouse - although not absolutely necessary, a three-button mouse or a two-button mouse

with a wheel is strongly recommended. Such a mouse facilitates the manipulation of many

of the views used in Discovery Studio.

For example, a PC with 512 MB RAM, a CPU speed of 2 GHz and a workstation-class

OpenGL graphics card should give good performance. PC hardware capabilities are currently

advancing so rapidly that a new commodity desktop PC would have significantly higher

specifications than these.

EXAMPLES

If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or64-bit (x64)processor

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

If you want to install ms office 2007 on your PC, here's what it takes:

Computer and processor 500 megahertz (MHz) processor or higher

Memory 256 megabyte (MB) RAM or higher1

Hard disk 1.5 gigabyte (GB);

Drive CD-ROM or DVD drive

Display 1024x768 or higher resolution monitor.

Through the Control Panel

1. Open the Start Menu.

5. For All Control Panel Items with Small Icons ViewA) Click on the View by drop down menu arrow, and select (dot) Small items. (see

screenshot above)

6. Close the Control Panel when done.

NOTE:When you close the Control Panel, whatever view you have selected will

automatically be the same view the next time you open the Control Panel.

Five reasons why people uninstall an application1: It hasnt been used for a while, and maybe is not really useful

2: Their computer is slowing down and they need to free up some memory

3: It takes too long time to run

4: It doesnt work well/its buggy

5: Its difficult to understand how to use it

There are many methods of uninstalling a program from computer. Following the right procedure

will lessen if not totally eliminate the chances of having errors caused by wrong uninstall process.

Effective methods of uninstalling programs are listed here.

Step 1: Uninstall using the Windows Add/Remove program.The Add/remove Feature of the Windows operating system can uninstall most of programs

installed in the system. Here's an example on how to uninstall Google Toolbar from any Windows

computer.

o Open the Start menu and select the Control Panel

o In the Control Panel window, double-click Add or Remove optiono Look for Google Toolbar in the Currently Installed Program list

o Click the Change/Remove button and follow the instructions

o You may need to restart your PC to complete the uninstall process

Step 2: Uninstall Using the Program UninstallerSome programs that you install on your computer don't show up in the Add or Remove Programs

list. There is another way to effectively remove it from the computer. Most programs have

Uninstall application file in its folder. A shortcut of that application is listed in the Start menu.

o Open Start menu and point to All Programs

o In the All Programs menu point to the program you want to uninstall

o Select the Uninstall option to start the uninstall process

o Follow the instructions to complete the process

If the uninstall program option is not available, perform a search for the folder where the program

files are stored. Most programs are stored in the My Program folder found in My Computer.

Double click the uninstall file for the program in this folder to start the uninstall process.

Step 3: Using Third-Party UninstallersThere are programs that add so many entries in the registry and copy so many files in the

different folders that it is almost impossible to uninstall them without leaving traces behind. An

effective way of getting rid of those leftover is by using Third-Party uninstaller. Many third Party

uninstallers can be found in the internet. Look for the third party uninstallers that also clean the

registry.

Step 4: Removing Programs with No UninstallersThere are programs that do not have any uninstallers available. These programs can be

uninstalled manually by deleting it from the program folder and editing the registry. You can alsoremove these programs by upgrading to a later version

Local printers

The most common way to install a printer is to connect it directly to your computer. This is

known as a local printer.

If your printer is a universal serial bus (USB) model, Windows should automatically detect it

and begin installation when you plug it in.

If you're installing a wireless printer that connects to your computer over a wireless network

(Wi-Fi), you can use the Add a device wizard to install the printer. For instructions,

If it's an older model that connects using the serial or parallel port, you might have to install it

manually.

To install (add) a local printer

1. Open Devices and Printers by clicking the Start button , and then, on the Start

menu, clicking Devices and Printers.

2. ClickAdd a printer.

3. In the Add Printer wizard, clickAdd a local printer.

4. On the Choose a printer port page, make sure that the Use an existing port button

and the recommended printer port are selected, and then clickNext.

5. On the Install the printer driver page, select the printer manufacturer and model, and

then clickNext.

If your printer isn't listed, clickWindows Update, and then wait

while Windows checks for additional drivers.

If none are available and you have the installation CD, clickHave Disk, and then

browse to the folder where the printer driver is located. (For additional help,

consult the printer manual.)

6. Complete the additional steps in the wizard, and then clickFinish.

Network printers

In the workplace, many printers are network printers. These connect directly to a network as

stand-alone devices. Inexpensive network printers are also made for the home.

To install a network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer

If you're trying to add a network printer at the office, you'll usually need the name of the

printer. If you can't find it, contact your network administrator.

1. Open Devices and Printers by clicking the Start button , and then, on the Start menu,

clicking Devices and Printers.

2. Click Add a printer.

3. In the Add Printer wizard, click Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer.

4. In the list of available printers, select the one you want to use, and then click Next. (If

your computer is connected to a network, only printers listed in Active Directory for

your domain are displayed in the list.)

5. If prompted, install the printer driver on your computer by clicking Install driver. If

you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or

provide confirmation.

6. Complete the additional steps in the wizard, and then click Finish.

Removing a printer

If you no longer use a printer, you can remove it from Devices and Printers.



2. Right-click the printer that you want to remove, click Remove device, and then

click Yes.

If you can't delete the printer, right-click it again, click Run as administrator,

click Remove device, and then click Yes. If you're prompted for an administrator

password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

See what's printing

You can see what's printingor waiting to printin the print queue. Documents that are

listed first will be the first to print.

2. Click your printer's icon, and then click See what's printing on the command bar.

Cancel printingIf you've printed something by mistake, you can cancel it, even if printing has already started.

To cancel printing an individual document




3. Right-click the document waiting to be printed, click Cancel, and then click Yes to

confirm.

To cancel all printing

To cancel all documents waiting to be printed, you must have permission to manage

documents on the printer.




3. Click the Printer menu, click Cancel All Documents, and then click Yes to confirm.

The item currently printing might finish, but the remaining items will be canceled.

Pause printing

You can pause and resume printing a single documentor multiple documents in the queue.

3. Right-click the document waiting to be printed, and then click Pause or Resume.

To pause someone else's document, you must have permission.

Printing again.

Reorder the print queueIf you're printing multiple items, you can change the order in which they print.

4. Click the General tab, drag the Priority tab left or right to change its print order, and

Preventive Maintenance ProceduresIf they are carried out on a regular basis, these regularly scheduled Windows PC procedures

will keep a system from getting so "out-of-tune" that a system crash is imminent, and will

also prevent other problems before they occur. Regular maintenance in Windows system

covers basics such as cleaning up, backing-up data, removing obsolete programs, Microsoft

updates, other security updates and defragmentation.

Cleaning Up

Every computer builds up temporary material. Files are generated and the system registry willadd more entries. A computer user needs to regularly clean the file system and registry.

Back-Up Data

If the hard drive fails, any data may be lost completely. So it should be backed up regularly to

an eternal storage resource like CD, DVD or external hard drive.

Remove Obsolete Programs

A computer owner may have installed many programs. It is good practice to uninstall

obsolete programs, since they not only take up valuable space, but they will also use system

resources.

Microsoft Updates

Microsoft updates must be applied since they will enhance the system and also prevent

problems occurring later on, and these also help protect against harmful threats applied within

documents.

Virus and Malware Checker Updates

It is important to keep anti-virus and anti-malware programs updated. Many of these database

updates are automatic. The owner is unprotected until the program is updated, and this iswhen the user is vulnerable to threats.

Defragmentation

Windows PCs require regular defragmentation. This should be done weekly and particularly

if there is a client email program like Microsoft Outlook because it will write to the driveoften.

Install language packs using Windows Update

If you have the Ultimate or Enterprise edition for Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can

download additional language packs by using Windows Update. Once you turn

on Windows Update, you can choose which languages you want to install (language packs

don't update automatically). Heres how to do it.

To download language packs for Windows 7

1. Click the Start button , and then, in the search box, type Windows Update.

2. In the list of results, clickWindows Update.

3. Click Check online for updates from Microsoft Update, and then wait

while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.

4. If any updates are found, click Optional updates are available.

5. Under Windows 7 Language Packs, select only the language pack that you want

(installing all of them might take up too much space on your drive).

6. Click OK, and then click Install updates. If you're prompted for an administrator

password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. You might have

to restart your computer too.

How do I get additional display languages?

You can add display languages by installing additional language files. When you install language files,

you can view wizards, dialog boxes, menus, Help topics, and other items in Windows in a differentlanguage.

There are two types of language files:

Windows 7 language packs. Windows 7 language packs provide a translated version of most of

the user interface.

Note

Language packs are available in Windows 7 Ultimate through Windows Update as optional

updates. They aren't installed automatically. If you're using Windows 7 Enterprise, contact your

system administrator for information about installing additional languages.

To get additional language packs by using Windows Update

Windows 7 Language Interface Pack (LIP). Windows 7 LIPs provide a translated version of the

most widely used areas of the user interface. LIPs are freely available to download. Because not

all of the user interface is translated, LIPs require at least one parent language. The parts of the

user interface that aren't translated into the LIP language are displayed in the parent language.

When you download the LIP, you get the parent language requirements for that language. The

parent language pack needs to be installed before the LIP can be installed. For more information,

Language packs

Download and install additional languages to view menus, dialog boxes, and other user interface

items in your preferred language.

In Windows 7, you can download languages in two ways:

Using Windows Update. If you're running an Ultimate or Enterprise edition of Windows, you

can download available language packs by using Windows Update. Language packs installed

using Windows Update provide a fully translated version of Windows dialog boxes, menu items,

and help content. All the languages available for this type of download have a "Learn how" link

in the right column of the table below.

Using the links on this page. You can download Language Interface Packs (LIPs) from

the Microsoft Download Center by using the links below. You can install LIPs over any edition of

Windows, but they provide a translated version of only the most widely used dialog boxes, menu

items, and help content. To install a LIP, you will need to have the required parent languageinstalled on your PC.

The table below shows if the language you're looking for requires a premium edition of Windows or a

particular parent language.
