Robertson met with supervisor Carol Thurston and engineering, printing and manufacturing union organiser Ruth Sprotson to hear about Ezibuy’s online successes. Ms Sprotson described the career advancement within the company and how some of the supervisors were once call centre workers themselves. Mr Robertson said this was evidence of the role of unions in a productive workplace. “This is a fantastic example of where a union has worked alongside a business to develop a great work culture and allows employees to work their way up through an organisation.” Robertson announced his standing for the leadership role at a campaign launch on October 19. He also announced his running mate as popular Auckland Central MP Jacinda Ardern. Mr Robertson says, in wake of the election result, Labour needs to reconnect with New Zealanders. “We must be consistent and inspire in New Zealanders the confidence that we are on their side and that they know who we are and what we are about. This needs a new generation of leadership. We need to do things differently, to rethink the issues we focus on, the way we talk about them, and how Labour is viewed.” As leader, he would focus on Labour becoming more community involved all year round, not just when they were trying to get votes. “We will know that this approach has succeeded when Labour is seen as a relevant and respected part of our community every day, not just at election time.” Local Labour MP Iain Lees- Galloway was one of two MPs who nominated Mr Robertson’s rival, former union boss Andrew Little, to succeed David Cunliffe for the leadership role. The ‘We want Grant’ Facebook page has 1,255 likes and he’s has had some well- known people pledge their support of his campaign, including former deputy Prime Minister Michael Cullen and former Prime Minister Sir Geoffrey Palmer. The leadership result will be announced on November 18.

X Factor judges impressedBy ALECIA ROUSSEAU

Talent was seeping fromall corners of the region onFriday as hundreds turnedout for the X Factor NewZealand auditions.

The Regent onBroadway was packed tothe brim, with some localsbeing asked to return thefollowing day after theunexpected surge.

Eli Payne, 19, was at theauditions for his secondtime. “I didn’t make it lasttime but the judges said Iwas on the right key. Igrew up singing and lovethat sort of punk rockalternative stuff.”

His sister MicaelaMallinder was there insupport. “Our entirefamily are singers but Eli’svoice is amazing — he hasthe unique voice and it’scome a long way since lastyear.”

Each contestant wasasked to perform one songfor the judges, with manymaking their minds up atthe last minute. Those who are successfulwill go on to perform in front of the fourcelebrity judges and live televisedaudience.

Jaycob Sandbrook was also waitingeagerly in line on Friday after beingencouraged by his mother to come along.

“I like to sing reggae and I’mconsidering No woman, no cry by BobMarley. I’ve been singing since I was atprimary school, I loved doing gigs andperforming in talent quests — I thoughtthis would be something I’d enjoy. I lovebeing on stage.”

Next to him in line waiting nervouslywas Niki Haines-Winiata. Having justmoved here from Taihape, she was singingwith a friend for support.

“I really hope she turns up — this is myfirst time. I’d previously been above theage limit.”

This year’s celebrity judges willinclude Stan Walker and Melanie Blatt.Host Dominic Bowden also returns for thesecond series.

“Last year The X Factor NZ proved toeveryone that Kiwis can produce world-class singers, now bands can join theparty. I have really missed the show, thewonderful crew, judges and fans but mostof all, the chance to showcase New Zealandtalent — not Australian or American, butour voices, to give a platform tohomegrown Kiwi talent and I know onceagain we are going to uncover someincredible stars,” Bowden said.

Benefits of home-based childcare

GDN301014barnardos

Kia Ora.My name is Kylie Wakelin and I’m a

childcare consultant for BarnardosKidstart Childcare.

I was born and raised in CentralHawke’s Bay in the small farmingcommunity of Wallingford.

Three years ago my family settled inManawatu.

My previous work experienceincludes working in community mentalhealth promotion, suicide preventionresearch and community developmentroles.

Before becoming a childcareconsultant, I was a home-basededucator. I have three gorgeous, funchildren — Maike, 17, Aimee, four, andAsh, two, and being a home-basededucator allowed me to stay at homeraising them while earning an income.

A benefit to home-based care hasbeen the strong, lasting bonds with thechildren in my care and their families. Westill play together today. My ownchildren learned to share and gained asense of community while havingadventures that enriched them asindividuals.

I have also used home-based care formy children and we still keep in touchwith our educator who’ll always have aspecial place in our family. It’s a uniquerelationship and for many parents one ofthe most appealing aspects of the home-based childcare.

The excellent child to educator ratiogives children the opportunity to formstrong connections and get plenty ofone-on-one attention — both importantfactors in fostering their development. Inmy role I’ve formed relationships with all

of our fun and experienced localeducators and I can guide parents withgentle support and lots of information tohelp them on their journey meeting andselecting an educator.

I absolutely love my job.

Inside Te Manawa — the tip of the iceberg

GDN301014temanawa

We caught up with Collection andKnowledge asset manager Jeff Fox in TeManawa’s Caravan to find out moreabout what he does.

Jeff began his career as a boypressing, drying and mounting flowersin Australia, a job he says he foundcathartic and socially fulfilling, learningas he went from his colleagues and fellowvolunteers.

In 1989 he entered the museum scene, serving 25 years at Te Papa beforejoining Te Manawa two years ago. Assomeone who is ultimately passionateabout Te Manawa’s extensive collection,Jeff’s role sees him totally immersed inweird and wonderful objects, importantart and potential purchases all with theend goal of having the collectionaccessible physically and virtually.

“I’m a storyteller and I relish achallenge — there are a lot of really good

projects here with a lotof potential,” he says.

Alongside acquiringitems for the collection, one of Jeff’s tasks is thestoring, display andloaning of collectionitems. Jeff is involvedwith the SustainableCollections Project, collaborating withSusan Abasa and threeMuseum Studiesstudents from MasseyUniversity.

This mutuallybeneficial projectinvolves an indepthlook at policies andprocedures related tocollecting andfocussing on one ofTM’s storage facilities.

Jeff’s role looks atboth tangible and intangible culturalheritage. His goal is in working towardsbuilding a data bank of images and oralhistories relating to “unique, different, crazy people in the Manawatu”. Jeff isworking to encourage the people of theManawatu to take ownership of and havepride in the collection.

“We have some cool objects, forexample ski poles possibly used byErnest Shakleton. I enjoy the mystery ofthe ‘could be’ and the ‘might be’.

Of the collection, I have only seen the

tip of the iceberg”.We asked Jeff why people should feel

passion for, and ultimately visit TeManawa. His answer was “simplybecause Te Manawa represents the heartof the community—past, present andfuture”.

You can take a Back-of-Housecollection tour with collection manager,Cindy Lilburn, during Local HistoryWeek from November 3-9. See the websitefor dates and times and book withreception. Spaces are limited.

Top tips for smooth wedding day success1. Don’t wear heels for

your rehearsal, unlessyou’re a frequent heelwearer.

I’m not a big heel wearerbecause I’m tall enough sansshoes. But I wore three-inchwedges for our weddingrehearsal and rehearsal dinner.Huge mistake. I was strugglingto walk in my two-inch heelsthree hours into my weddingday. If you do wear heels foryour rehearsal, pop on someflats for the rest of the evening, especially if your feet aren’tused to being in heels. Also, bring a separate pair ofcomfortable shoes to wear onyour wedding day, just in case.I bought some circa-1998platform flip flops (so my dresswouldn’t drag on the floor andso I wouldn’t trip on it) to wearon the dance floor at ourreception.

2. Baby wipes are yourbest friend.

We did First Look photosoutside before our ceremony, which meant the bottom of mydress was dirty even though Ipicked it up when I walkedaround. When my bridal partyand I got to our ceremonyvenue, my maid of honourbusted out some baby wipesand went to town cleaning thehem of my dress. The babywipes were magical, taking allthe dirt off my dress. When Iwalked down the aisle no onecould tell how dirty it had been30 minutes earlier. The babywipes also came in handy whenour caterers spilled barbecuesauce on a food stationtablecloth and flipped it overinstead of removing it, so thatwhen I went to get my food I gotbarbecue sauce all over thefront of my wedding dress.Thank goodness for those babywipes — they got the sauce offin no time. Note: my dress wassatin. Make sure you can usebaby wipes on your dressmaterial.

3. Take your dress off touse the toilet.

Yes. When I needed to go tothe bathroom I took my maid ofhonour with me. She unzippedmy dress, I stepped out of the

dress, she held the dress up likeI was still in it, I did mybusiness, washed my hands, jumped back into the dress, shezipped me up and we were onour way. So much easier thanhaving 3-5 bridesmaids holdingup your dress while you pee. This tip works best if you have adress you can easily get in andout of. If all else fails pull aBethenny Frankel and pee in atrash can. I won’t judge you.

4. Hair and make-up trialsare a must.

I believe in getting yourmakeup and hair professionallydone for your wedding day. When else will you get thechance to have your make-upprofessionally airbrushed?Splurge a little. Things arestressful enough without doingyour own. I also stronglybelieve in having at least onemake-up and hair trial. This isso important. Take photo

examples to show how youwant your hair and make-up tolook. When you get home fromyour trials, have someone takephotos of you from every angle.I decided I didn’t want my hairpinned up to the side based onhow I looked in photos I tookafter my hair trial.

5. Give yourself morethan enough time on yourwedding day.

Things will run behindschedule. I was an hour lategetting to my First Lookbecause my hair took longerthan expected, and I was afrazzled mess (I hate beinglate). In my opinion, the brideshould be the first to get herhair or make-up done. If she’sgetting her hair done someoneelse can be getting their make-up done, but the bride is thenumber one priority. If youthink it’ll take you three hoursto get ready, plan for it to take

4-5 hours. Trust me. If you’reahead of schedule yourphotographer can get morebridal shots of you or photos ofyou and your bridesmaids inyour bridal suite. It’s alwaysbest to be ahead of schedulerather than behind. If you arerunning late, don’t freak out toomuch — they can’t start withoutyou.

6. Have a wedding daysurvival kit.

My maid of honour had oneand so did my day of weddingco-ordinator. Google “weddingday survival kit”. Some thingsto have in your kit: water, deodorant, mints, aspirin/ibuprofen, antacid, lip gloss/lipstick, dental floss, sewingkit, first aid kit, touch-uppowder, bobby pins, mirror,band-aids, baby wipes, whitechalk, stain remover, safetypins, smelling salts, handsanitiser, scissors, cotton buds

and a lint roller.7. Hold your bouquet low.For the love, hold your

bouquet low. I cringe when Isee brides holding theirbouquets up by their faces. Itmay feel weird to hold it low,but trust me, it looks muchbetter. Before walking downthe aisle with my dad and step-dad, I held my bouquet where Iwanted it and told them to hookmy arms. Do the same withwhoever walks you down theaisle.

8. Walk slowly down theaisle.

It’s not the 50m dash. Youonly get one chance (hopefully)to walk down the aisle. Savourit. I told my dad and step-dad tofollow my lead. Do the samewith the person or people whowalk you down the aisle. Don’tlet them speed you up. Walkslowly. Smile. Lock eyes withyour groom. And carry thatbouquet low, sister. This goesfor bridesmaids, too.

9. Have your maid ofhonour practice bustlingyour dress before thewedding day.

Having your maid of honour(or whoever will be bustlingyour dress) practice bustlingyour dress before your big daywill save time. If possible, haveher accompany you to your lastfitting so your seamstress canshow her how to do it. Note: Ihad a one-point bustle and itheld strong all night, neverbreaking. I credit myseamstress’ use of Ric-Racribbon.

10. Have a receiving line.I know some people hate

receiving lines. I love them. Wehad our receiving line as guestscame from cocktail hour to pickup their escort cards and headinto the reception hall. I’m areceiving line fan because I wasable to see and greet everyonewho came to our wedding. Bradand I covered all 120 of ourwedding guests in 15-20minutes. It went quicklybecause people wanted to sitdown and eat. Plus, I thinkhaving a line of people behindyou puts the pressure on tokeep it short and sweet.

YOUR PLACE. YOUR PACE.

Tips for a better youModern women play multipleroles in their life; bothprofessional and personal.

Hence it’s significant to takeproper care of physical fitness.

Most women fail to look aftertheir health amidst their busyschedule. But the fact is it’swomen who require morenutrition when compared to men.The kind of issues affectingwomen’s health are greatlydifferent from those of men, asthe health cycle follows a morecomplicated path.

Women require more care, especially during times ofpregnancy and lactation. It’s vitalto create some healthy changes toyour lifestyle in order to lead aproper and healthful life.■ Establish an exercise routine:

Staying active will help youdevelop a strong body thatappears and feels good as youage. It may lower your risk fordisease, reduce stress and protectyour bones and joints. Thereforeit’s important to take part inphysical activities that aren’t onlychallenging but also fun andmotivating. Keep thingsinteresting by mixing it up;whether it’s a dance class or akayaking trip, don’t be afraid totest something new.■ Maintain healthy eating habits:

Stop worrying about yourweight and start thinking aboutyour health. Eating mostly wholefoods, including plenty ofvegetables, fruits and wholegrains, is the key to feeling andlooking your very best. Start by

adding an additionalserving of fruits andvegetables to every meal.Lower your possibility ofosteoporosis later byconsuming more calciumnow. Calcium is availablein dairy products includingmilk, yoghurt and cheeseand in other foods, such asleafy green vegetables likespinach and kale, broccoliand tofu. Vitamin D helpsthe body absorb calcium soit’s vital you take a

supplement, eat foods fortifiedwith vitamin D or go for a walkoutdoors in the sunshine.■ Get a good night’s sleep:

Not receiving enough sleep canhinder your memory and ability toreason while focusing, make youmore susceptible to injury, increase levels of stress andreduce your body’s ability to fightinfection or heal. For those whohave trouble getting a goodnight’s rest, try sleeping andwaking up at the same time everyday or taking a hot shower beforebed.■ Manage stress:

It’s easy to get overwhelmedwith balancing a new job, friendsand anything else happening inyour life. Breathe; slow, deep, diaphragmatic breaths can triggera relaxation response inside yourwhole body.

Spark of Life — connecting with demetia patientsStaff at Enliven’s Manawatu rest homesare embracing the Spark of Life.

Spark of Life is a practical approach todementia care concentrating on

connecting with the person withdementia and understanding theirperspective. The name, Spark of Life, refers to regaining the sparkle in the eyes

of those with advanced dementia.“The sparkle in the eyes is an instant,

visible measure of a strong and healthyspirit,” explains Spark of Life founder JaneVerity (pictured).

Verity was in Palmerston Northrecently to train Enliven staff from aroundthe North Island, including staff fromBrightwater Home and Willard Home inPalmerston North and Coombrae Homein Feilding, and meet with families ofpeople experiencing the dementiajourney.

“Dementia isn’t a disease. It’s anumbrella term that describes a group ofsymptoms,” says Jane.

“Spark of Life began as a therapeuticclub programme specifically for peoplewith advanced dementia. The resultsshowed people with dementia couldimprove which created the foundationfor the programme which is offeredtoday.”

The programme has now developedto support staff and families to interactin a way that keeps people withdementia connected with the worldaround them.

Enliven general manager NicolaTurner says every day staff see thedifference implementing the Spark ofLife can make.

“We’ve seen improvements in socialinteractions, memory and language —it’s truly very powerful.”

“The training provides practical

solutions to everyday challenges whichcan be used easily by staff and familymembers through making small changesto their language and their approach.”

Crouch,Touch, Paws!

Rockets and crackers are great fun for us, but even the tiniest of popscan upset some pets. These noises sometimes stress pets to the pointwhere they may become disoriented or get hurt in their panic to get away.A frightened animal may become lost, get hit by a car, or even be injureddirectly from the fireworks themselves. The following tips will help petowners minimise pet panic during this noisy time:

• Take your dog out for a long walk late afternoon. Feed all pets mid to lateafternoon. Tired pets with full tummies are more likely to be sleepier.

• If you are leaving your dog at homewhile you watch the display, makesure your pet is safely tucked awayin a kennel or in a safe and secureroom in the house, with somefavourite toys.

• Keep your cat inside during thistime. Lock the cat flap and makesure there is a litter tray inside.

• Draw the curtains to help keepthe noise down and the lights out.Provide a cosy bed with a new toyand/or chew. Put the TV or somemusic on. These will provide adistraction.

• If your cat gets very anxious, put him/her in a cat cage with ablanket or towel over the top. Dothe same with any caged animalslike rabbits or guinea pigs.

• If your vet has prescribed any sedative drugs for the evening, ensure theyare given at the time advised, for maximum effectiveness.

• Lock all exits! In case your pet does run away, ensure he/she is eitherwearing a collar with identification, or is microchipped.

• Don’t punish your pet if he or she is scared. Punishment will make him/hermore anxious and confirms that there is something to be frightened of.

• A frightened animal needs clear andcalm support from its owner – if youshow your pet there is nothing to befrightened of it will often help them tofeel better. It is OK to pat and comfortyour pet if they are frightened, but youshould do so in a calm, soothing andnon-stressful way.

• Try to avoid late evening walks forat least a week prior to and afterthe event – there are often isolatedfireworks during this time. Rememberthat firework components, whetherexploded or unexploded, are toxic.

If you think your pet may need sedatingduring fireworks or any other noisyevent, please ring Totally Vets Feildingfor advice. Your pet may need to seea vet first before a sedative can beprescribed.
