The New Zealand Dermatological Society Incorporated (NZDSi) says it’s unacceptable for youth to be at a higher risk of developing skin cancer as a result of excessive sun exposure on school grounds. Local member Dr Louise Reiche said, though the Cancer Society’s SunSmart campaign had been effective in pre-school, primary and some intermediate schools, the campaign had not been funded for the secondary sector. “UV radiation is at its highest between September and April from 10am to 4pm — the hours when children are at school. Therefore having adequate shade to provide protection from the sun is vitally important.” Dr Reiche has sent letters to various secondary schools across Palmerston North and says she was overwhelmed by their response. “One local school’s board of trustees incorporated shade requirements into their building and landscape policy plans, while feedback from parent representatives at another school stated, ‘they would not allow their children to participate in swimming and athletics carnivals because they felt being in direct sunlight all day was unacceptable’.” She said this meant the lack of shade also restricted children from engaging in education and activities. Local initiatives focused on being sun smart include a joint project by the Palmerston North City Council and Health Promotion Agency who have funded a shade available for hire while shades have also been erected at the Lido. NZDSi is also attempting to establish a nationwide plan to improve shade in schools. Community work for sheep killerBy ALECIA ROUSSEAU

A young Pahiatua man has been sentencedto 200 hours community work for his part inthe slaughter of 16 sheep.

Jordan Hanson, 17, appeared last weekin the Palmerston North District Court. Heearlier admitted stealing and killing 16 in-lamb ewes from two Eketahuna properties.

Hanson’s lawyer, Richard Bedford, saidhis client was remorseful and had admittedguilt at an early stage. He was beingsupported in court by his father, who hadrecently moved back to the area.

Mr Bedford claimed Hanson now hadpart-time work in shearing shedsthroughout the Wairarapa and this was apositive factor in reducing his chance ofreoffending.

He said the offending came down toHanson associating with the wrong crowd, who encouraged this type of behaviour.

Upon sentencing, Judge Ross said itneeded to be made clear this type ofoffending was distasteful, especially in arural community, and needed to bedeterred.

He said there was no excuse for thekillings, which had included one pet lamb.A pre-sentencing report stated Hanson wasdriven by the company of others but hadaccepted the “wrongness” of the crime.

He also faced one charge of possession ofcannabis and received nine monthssupervision. He was ordered to undergo adrug and alcohol assessment and adhere toany consequences pending its outcome.

Hanson was also convicted for the theftof one goat and received three months lossof license due to the involvement of a motorvehicle. A reparation order of $680 was alsomade.

His co-offenders are making their waythrough the court system.

INCIDENT: The MidCentral District Health Board has released details of 15 seriousadverse events. PHOTO: SUPPLIED.

Retained surgical itemamong list of eventsBy ALECIA ROUSSEAU

MidCentral District Health Board hasreleased details of 15 adverse eventsrecorded for patients under their care inthe year to June.

The board released its findings as partof the Health Quality and SafetyCommissions annual release.

Of the 15 serious adverse events, ninerelated to falls resulting in a fracture, while six further incidents includedthree delayed or missed diagnosis, aretained surgical item and twoincomplete assessments.

Further details of the events reveal anunexpected neonatal death after adeteriorating condition of the infant wasnot recognised, a retained tissue forcepduring surgery that was removed thefollowing day and a delayed diagnosisthat possibly contributed to an infant’sdeath.

Since 2009, the MDHB has beenreporting these events through the New

Zealand Incident Management System. The overall goal of reporting is to learnand make improvements.

Recommendations as a result of thisreport include improving midwivescompetence and response to emergencysituations, counting equipment at theend of each procedure and strengtheningcross service relationships.

In relation to falls, the MDHB hasrecommended undergoing case studies inthe ward for all nursing staff, ensuringpersonal items are within reach and arefresher course for staff to use falls alertstickers.

Nationally SAE’s have risen by fourper cent with falls as the highest cause. This is despite a falls preventionprogramme being implemented by theHQSC last year.

The report also revealed two peopleunderwent the wrong operation, fivepeople had an unnecessary procedureand six patients were confused forsomeone else.

BLESSING: Bishop Charles Drennan talks to the school beforeblessing each room of the new block. PHOTO: DALE WICKEN

Promoting modern learningBy DALEWICKEN

Construction sounds and coldfloors are things of the past at StJames Catholic School as workhas finally been completed ontheir refurbished and earthquakestrengthened classroom block.

Bishop Charles Drennan of thePalmerston North Dioceseblessed the new building lastweek at an occasion attended bypast and present pupils, teachers, parents and church members.

After close to a year’s work, the renovated building featuresopen-plan classrooms whichallow for team teaching, fewerwalls, breakout rooms, a musicroom, wireless internet and acentralised teacher workstation.

“We’re about growingconfident, connected learners andpreparing children to moveconfidently into their futures,”said principal Teresa Edwards.

Promoting self-directed learningand the ability to work withoutconstant management wassomething the new facilitieswould support, she added.

The ‘modern learning spaces’are designed for flexible learningand offer the opportunity forstudents and teachers to learntogether. Ms Edwards said theimprovements reflected thechanges in teaching and thelearning environment that haveoccurred since the school openedin 1958.

The work began early thisyear after being approved in 2010.

“We were told the projectwould go ahead four years ago butthen the earthquake happenedand the Catholic Schools Boardfunding went to the rebuild inChristchurch,” said Ms Edwards.

Teachers and pupils had toendure construction noise andtook classes in the school hallduring the refurbishment.

Eliminating fruit waste

HARVESTER: Madz BatachEl has been harvesting fruit and giving it to those in need for two years now.PHOTO: DALE WICKEN

By DALEWICKEN

Seeing perfectly good fruit go towaste was something MadzBatachEl wasn’t fond of so shedecided to do something about it,and started up a local branch ofnationwide charity CommunityFruit Harvesting.

The charity picks unwantedfruit from backyards andorchards to share with those inneed, holding to the beliefnobody should go hungry whilefruit falls to the ground and rots.

“I saw an article about thecharity and it resonated withme,” said Ms BatachEl.

As regional co-ordinator she

organises a team of volunteerswho pick the fruit and take it towherever it’s required at thetime. This might be the foodbank, Just Zilch, Refugeeservices or local schools.

“At one point we got 100kgs ofgrapefruit we took to NorthStreet School. We’ve also takenfruit to the Highbury librarywhere the kids just devoured it.”

While fruit, citrus inparticular, is the main product, the fruit harvest team take anyleftover vegetables as well.

“We got a van full ofpumpkins and potatoes close toChristmas last year so we tookthem to the foodbank who put

them in their Christmas foodhampers which was really cool.”

Ms BatachEl says thecharity’s work with other groupsand volunteers creates a realcommunity. And while the foodbanks and free food store oftengets the food, the team likes totake it out to the community aswell.

“There’s also people in thecommunity who won’t use afoodbank so we take it to schoolsand places where it’s accessible.”

■ The initiative works all year round. If you wish to volunteer or have anyfruit or donations, phone Madz on021 668 536.

MUCH-NEEDED: The Salvation Army’s men’s hostel hasbeen given a grant of $50,000. PHOTO: GIVEALITTLE

Boost for men’s hostelto benefit communityBy ALECIA ROUSSEAU

Men who may have beenhomeless in PalmerstonNorth have been given aboost with a recent grantfrom the Eastern andCentral CommunityTrust.

The community trusthas gifted $50,000 to theSalvation Army to gotowards operating theirmen’s hostel andtransitional house. Thefacility is the only one inthe lower North Islandoffering accommodationand support to menstruggling with addiction, mental health andcriminal backgrounds.

The emergencydonation is a one-off and abid to give theorganisation time toreorganise funding andcommunity partnerships.

Community ministriesmanager Kevin Richardssays the hostel is uniquewith a successful track record.

“It caters for between 100 and 150 menannually, aged between 18 and 80, wholive by strict curfews and rules, arewatched over by staff on duty 24 hours aday and are given access to necessarysupport services.”

Many of those referred to the hostelhave recently been released from prisonbut statistics show more than 80 per centof occupants are rehoused in independenthousing.

Mr Richards says an example ofsuccess includes a chronic alcoholic whowas suffering from a head injury and hadspent years incarcerated.

He was now alcohol free and

undertaking community programmes.“Other examples include a similarly

desperate man who’s now free of hisaddiction problems and able to restorefamily relationships, and an addictedgambler who lost his job and becomesuicidal and psychotic, who has turnedhis life around and is training to be ateacher.”

The Salvation Army also assigns caseworkers and monitors things like TV.

“As a result, we are achieving a safercommunity,” Mr Richards said.

“If the hostel and transitional houseclosed, we would see a higher number oftransient men in the community, morecrime and more harm in the community.”

PROUD: The class from Ashhurst School who were responsible for part of the muralwere pleased with how it looked installed at the centre. PHOTO: DALE WICKEN

Mural brightens playcentreBy DALEWICKEN

A project which took a year to completehas finally been unveiled at AshhurstPlaycentre. A multi-part mural withcontributions from three local schoolsand artist Nicola Hemphill was shown off,and students who contributed wererewarded for their efforts.

The $3000 project was made possiblethrough funding from CreativeCommunities and three local schoolswere approached for input. Hiwinui,Awahou and Ashhurst School eachsubmitted four designs, with one fromeach school selected. The artwork wasthen completed and installed behind theswingset at the Playcentre.

“We’ve been thinking of doing this for

years and years. It adds to the vibrancy ofour centre and provides a link with thecentre and local schools, whose pupils areoften past students of ours,” saidplaycentre president Helen King.

Ms King said the placement of theparts of the mural was thought out so theywould be interactive for the children.Underneath the painting of a digger, thestaff placed a mound for children to dig toprovide a link.

“It’s all about learning andinteraction.”

The three schools’ designs were placedin the ‘premium position’ behind theswingset. Ms King said AshhurstPlaycentre had plans to add to theartwork by creating a seascape on the sideof the main building.

Events developers Aaron Karamaena andMichelle Gould’s main goals are to linkwith, and promote, local communitygroups.

They actively seek collaboration withpassionate people and businesses tocreate events that will enrich and extendthe Te Manawa experience.

After two years at Te Manawa, Aaronhas most enjoyed the cultural melting potthat is Waitangi Day and Matariki. Hesays these events have involved bringinggroups together, highlighting skills andpassing on the passion.

“I enjoy collaborating and workingwith specialised groups of people. Ibecome consumed by other people’spassions,” he said.

Michelle has been with Te Manawa forjust under three years and has come tolove working with both individuals andwider community groups.

She says she loves her job because noday is the same and she thrives onexposing skills and talents otherwisehidden in the community.

“I want each event or programme to bethe best it could possibly be.”

Aaron and Michelle say they wantpeople to be looked after and wellrespected. They want participants inevents and visitors to leave Te Manawaon a happy note—looking forward to

returning and leaving feeling enrichedand inspired.

The events developers are enthusiasticabout the many reasons to visit TeManawa.

“It’s free* and always changing,”Aaron says. “We showcase both nationaland international art exhibitions as wellas emerging artists, there is alwayssomething to do, and it is family friendly.Te Manawa also supports the localcommunity and it’s inspirational.”

Defibrillator — part ofyour first aid kit?Vast inroads have been made over the pasteight years by a locally-owned familybusiness promoting the public use ofdefibrillators. They’ve been placing many atvarious locations from Whangarei toOamaru, some many miles away fromadvanced medical services.

As a New Zealand distributor for ZollMedial, First Aid to Survive prides itself onits products and service which includes on-going training and support, supply of freeprogram updates when guidelines changeand notifying users when their expiry datesfall and consumables need replacing. TheZOLL Plus AED is rated top of the list forcost, support and reliability.

Their database now exceeds 260 clientsincluding councils, shopping malls, business firms, associations, social andsports clubs, medical centres, schools, andcoastal settlements. St John has recentlyfitted out New Zealand ambulances withthe Zoll Plus Defibrillator.

With the concept of having defibrillatorsavailable to the lay-rescuer, survivingsudden cardiac arrest is now on the rise inNew Zealand. Unfortunately about 80 percent of these incidents happen at home soit makes sense to have one accessible inyour neighbourhood. Some workplaces aredoing just that, a number of businessescollectively purchase one for their area and

First Aid to Survive carries out the trainingand ongoing support.

Other countries have placeddefibrillators in restored phone boxesaround the city making them accessible tothe general public.

Around our Square could be a goodmove, and with a little forward thinking, itwouldn’t take much to train a number ofpeople who are out and about such asparking wardens, security officers, maoriwardens and taxi drivers. It would be aninteresting Health and Safety exercise forPalmerston North and First Aid to Survive ishappy to carry out the training.

Manager Roy Shadbolt is also a tutor andmarketing manager for First Aid trainingprovider Links training Ltd, recently ratedby NZQA as a category one First Aid trainingprovider.

If you’re considering purchasing adefibrillator give some thought to the costof ongoing maintenance and support. TheZoll Plus AED costs nothing to maintain forfive years, it has the ability to downloadupdates through infrared technology anduses easily available batteries.

Changes afootMANFEILD MATTERS

with HEATHERVERRY

For those living in the vicinityof Manfeild, you would’ve hearda lot of barking as well as theroar of engines over Labourweekend.

The National Dog Obediencecompetition at our venue drewseveral hundred humanparticipants and even morecanine competitors from aroundthe country and was a sight tobehold.

One of the favourite eventsfor me from this National DogObedience Assembly event wasRally-O, an against the clockundertaking that asks a dog andits handler to perform adifferent sign-posted exerciseevery few metres. Rally-O isn’t

as simple asit mightsound but, funnilyenough, it’sjust aslikely forthe humanside of theteam tobecome

confused by the combinations ofturns, presents, finishes, changes of position, heelingaround cones, halts, stays andjumps as the canine competitor.

What I like about all thechallenges is every one isdesigned for maximum fun. There were plenty of smiles allaround during the weekend. Agreat reminder friendship, trust

and mutual respect are thedrivers that bring the best pawforward in these pursuits.

The obedience champs isanother significant event for theregion in regard to its potentialto deliver significant economicreturn locally.

The greater count ofparticipants were from beyondManawatu and many werestaying in and around Feilding.

This was another event inwhich Manfeild Park’s handygeographical location, qualityand sheer size were factors thatsold its use. We were able tocater for all but one of thetraditional obedience eventsshowcasing just how well ahandler and dog can worktogether as a team.

The exception was a farm-working trial includingexercises such as tracking, scalejumps, retrieving over a jumpand article searches. These wereheld on two farms near Foxton.

The next few weeks are abusy time for our facility. One ofthe big upcoming events is theannual MG Car Club’s CharityClassic on November 15-16.

This presents opportunity tosee racing by a hugely diversecount of categories involving 300cars, many rare and exotic.Muscle cars, pre-65s, the BMWE30 category, sports and GTs.The count and range of vehiclesis considerable, colourful andalways captivating. The 2014weekend is a milestone, beingthe 29th running. The meetingalways seems to draw out ‘new’historics competing for the firsttime but the majority are oldfavourites.

Last week we also announcedfresh roles in our management.Julie Keane, a well-knownFeilding identity, has assumedthe role of acting generalmanager of Manfeild Park. MrsKeane will also continue asSales and Events manager, the

position she has held sincejoining Manfeild five years agofrom Sport Manawatu where shespecialised in sportmanagement.

Last week the Manfeild teamwas joined by Gavin Halls, aBriton who undertakes a newly-formed role of BusinessDevelopment manager. Julie’sappointment follows my ownresignation as Manfeild Parkchief executive.

I will depart on November 28,after five years at the helm, toundertake the chief executiveposition with the New ZealandPolice Association.

Manfeild Park Trust hasdetermined to delay recruitmentof a replacement chief executiveuntil next year.

The innovative Tranzheat system

GDN061114tranzheat

Over the past four years,we have studied theshortfalls of the varioustypes of ventilation, heatrecovery and airconditioners on themarket.

We have come up withthe most innovativesystem available for theNew Zealand home.

We decided onbalanced pressureventilation forcondensation control andair quality and heatpumptechnology for heatrecovery and heating.

Adaptations areavailable where heat, which is presently lost tothe outside from yourrangehood and bathroomextractor, can bereclaimed andreintroduced inside.

Your existing heat transfer or positivepressure system can also be connected onto a Tranzheat Ventilation Heat RecoverySystem with only the heat contentextracted to be released into fresh airbeing distributed where needed.

Introducing the innovative Tranzheatheat recovery/ventilation system, withpatented technology (Patent no 616625)and superior heat recovery properties.

The Tranzheat system:■ Reclaims at least twice the heat of anyother system available.

■ A single unit that is discreetly mountedin the ceiling cavity.■ No ugly outdoor unit.■ Costs the same as a couple of 400wEconoHeaters to run, but has an output of2400w on heating.■ Conforms with New Zealand BuildingCode NZS4303:1990—“Ventilation foracceptable indoor air quality”.■ Supply and installation cost iscomparative to other ventilation systemson the market but with true energyefficient heating capabilities.■ Clean and unobtrusive control pad.

Toyota hybrid tops seven million sales

MILESTONE: Toyota's market-leadinghybrid range (clockwise) — Camry, Priusv, Prius and Prius c.

Global sales of Toyota’s hybrid cars(including Lexus) have now passed themilestone of seven million vehicles.

Firmly established as the world’slargest producer of hybrid vehicles, theToyota hybrid tally includes 3.3 millionsold in Japan, 2.5 million in the UnitedStates and 770,000 in Europe.

The latest one-million sales wereachieved in record time — just ninemonths after Toyota (including Lexus)reached the six-million hybrid thresholdin December last year, which doubled thethree million total passed in February2011.

The milestone of 1 million hybridswas reached in May 2007.

Globally, Prius accounts for almosthalf the overall total with 3.36 millionsales — making it easily the world’s best-selling hybrid vehicle.

Toyota estimates its hybrid vehicleshave cut carbon-dioxide emissions byapproximately 49 million tonnes andsaved about 18 million kilolitres of fuelcompared with vehicles of similar size

and driving performance using petrol-only engines.

Toyota began selling the Prius in theJapan in December 1997 and in NewZealand in 2001.

Camry Hybrid has been built inAustralia since 2010 while the Prius wasexpanded into a family of three vehiclesin 2012 with the addition of the Prius ccity car and the Prius v seven-seater.

Over the 17 years since the first Priuswas launched, Toyota has endeavouredto encourage the mass-market adoptionof hybrid vehicles, which use less fueland emit fewer tailpipe emissions thanequivalent petrol-only models.

Toyota has positioned hybrid and itsrelated developments as coretechnologies for the 21st century.

The company therefore plans tocontinue working to enhanceperformance, reduce costs and expand itsproduct line-up to create vehicles thatare popular with consumers.

Next year, Toyota will start selling itsfirst mass-produced hydrogen fuel-cell

hybrid vehicle in Japan, Europe and theUnited States.Toyota’s hybrid vehicle chronology■ December 1997 — Prius launched inJapan■ November 2000 — Cumulative Prius salesreach 50,000 vehicles

Brain

Benders

Christmas has always been a day ofsurprises, especially when it’s time to openthe Christmas presents. Aucklander Carolwas excited when she saw a big box withher name on it marked: ‘From your lovinghusband’.“He kept joking how I would never guesswhat he had brought me”says Carol.“Onmy birthday morning I opened the boxand staring me in the face was an electrictoilet seat that would clean and dry me atthe push of a button”.Carol says she had long wanted a ‘paperless’Bidet, but there was never any room for onein the bathroom.“I had seen this marvellousmachine advertised in this paper quite afew times and had always thought I shouldinquire about them. The roomwas in

laughter and everybody was joking aboutmy present. My dear husband went straightaway and arranged for installation for myBidet toilet seat. It only took a fewminutes, and he was back downwith a smile on hisface. “

The Bidet seat has features which appealto both the health conscious and to olderpeople. The seat has separate feminine and

bottomwash sprays and dries thoroughlywith warm air, leaving the user feeling freshand clean.

The Bidet’s other features include a warmseat and water adjusted to the user’spreferred temperature. It has one-buttonoperation, is self-cleaning and fits to theexisting toilet fittings.

“It was the best present ever!” says Carol.“By the end of the day everybody had gonefor a test drive onmy new toilet seat andmy husband had to tell them all where hehad bought it.”

The Bidet toilet seat isavailable from
