Kindergarten and Stage 5 English Reading Day

During Term 1 – Week 11, Monday 8th April, Mrs Maloy’s Stage 5 English class visited the Kindergarten room at Manilla Central School to read stories to the Kindies.

The 9/10 English students had just finished a unit on poetry and had been re-imaging Australia bush ballads into children’s books, so decided to share these stories with the kids and read other selected stories too.

Year 9/10 English students also decided to get into the spirit of creativity and dressed up in a range of costumes to surprise the Kindergarten students, much to their surprise and delight!

It was an enjoyable afternoon and a valuable sharing/learning experience for all students involved.

A BIG thankyou to Mrs Alston and Mrs Martin (SLSO) for letting the High School students be a part of the learning in the Primary School

Water in the World Workshop

Stage 4 HSIE were given the opportunity on Tuesday 9th April to participate in a Water in the World Workshop that was held by the Tamworth Regional Council at Manilla Central School. This workshop was part of the course being delivered to the students at the School in Geography and looked at the availability and distribution of water in our region, in Australia and globally.The guest speakers on the day were;

• Ian Lobban – Water Sustainability Officer for Tamworth Regional Council

• Gina Watt – Water Process Engineer for Tamworth Regional Council

They spoke with the students about where our water comes from, water restrictions in Manilla and the region and what we can do to help save water in our homes.It was an informative session that had the students asking lots of questions and also sharing their own knowledge of water issues from experiences and their research throughout the unit of work in Term 1. We would like to thank Tamworth Council for coming to the school and helping our students understand about water in our region.

1/2 Opal NewsThis term in 1/2 Opal we will be studying Earth and Space. Our unit of work will focus on discovering how we can investigate the observable changes that occur in the sky and on the land, and what Earth’s resources are and how we use and care for them. This topic will be investigated through our Talk for Learning, Sentence of the day, reading, writing and through experimentation. Students will need to draw on a range of skills and work in collaborative groups to be successful. As a part of our unit of work, we will be experimenting with green screening. Students are very excited to try this and will begin playing around with it this week. I have enlisted the help of our Instructional Leader Miss Sarah Dixon who is skilled in a wide range of areas to help make this a success. Exciting times ahead so stay tuned!My term 2 class newsletter will be sent home with students this week which will provide a few general reminders about our class routines. Please check your child’s bags for this letter.This Thursday, 9th May, I will be attending a conference in Sydney around Learning Sprints with Dr Simon Breakspear. So far 1/2 Opal and1/2 Emerald have completed a Learning Sprints around sight words and have done some professional learning around the ways the brain learns tricky words. We are currently doing a sprint on correct letter formation. Mrs Nola Elliott will be taking the class in my absence. 1/2 Opal will not be hosting an assembly until Term 3. At this stage it is on the school calendar for Thursday 29th August. A reminder about this will be sent out closer to the day. Please ensure that you regularly keep up-to-date with the school newsletter and Seesaw for any changes.Students have been busy building their knowledge of phonemes and how they blend them together to make words. Pictured are students using their knowledge during morning phonics instruction. Students have been busy organising some special gifts for Mother’s Day. On behalf of 1/2 Opal, I would like to wish all Manilla Central Schools parents and carers a very happy Mother’s Day. Mrs Mac
