1/2 Opal News
This term we are learning about the ‘Material World’. Students have been looking at a variety of materials to determine how they can be changed, manipulated and combined. So far, we have examined the best uses for certain materials according to their attributes and have transferred our knowledge of this into a ‘Dream Bedroom’ diorama. These are still a work in progress, but they are coming along nicely, and everyone is displaying fantastic imagination skills during the construction stage. Also pictured is an activity where students had to order items from the softest to the hardest. This involved a bit of problem-solving as they had to keep testing and adjusting their predictions according to how they felt.In writing we are learning about procedures; specifically, how to read, write and follow instructions. Each week we enjoy a shared experience which then becomes the focus for our ‘Sentence of the Day’ the following week. Last Friday we made ‘Cookie Faces’. This week we will write the procedure for ‘How to Make Cookie Faces’.Our Visual Arts lessons revolve around following instructions to ‘make something’ using a range of materials. After we have completed our dioramas, we will look at constructing a piece of artwork using recycled materials. In music lessons with Mrs O’Brien we have started to practise for our Christmas visit to Manellae Lodge. This is a precious moment that students look forward to and we hope that the residents are looking forward to our visit as much as we are.In Mathematics we have enjoyed a range of group activities along with some problem-solving tasks that are always fun. I am really impressed with how students are working together to solve these tasks. Well done 1/2 Opal!As the year starts to come to an end, I would like to extend a huge thank you to all my 1/2 Opal cherubs and to their parents and carers for entrusting me with your child’s education. I have learnt so much this year from all my students and look forward to having the next 7 weeks with them. We have so much more to do and learn about in such a short amount of time, so if your children come home saying they are tired, they probably are. As I say to my student’s regularly ‘If your brain is not sweaty, I’m not doing my job properly’.Mrs Mac

School FencesLast term we announced that we have been successful in attaining a security fence around the primary and secondary departments. The fences were measured last Wednesday and a scope of works is being submitted to us shortly. We are looking forward to the fences being erected later this term.In the meantime, can I remind everyone that our school grounds are not available for use after school hours unless an arrangement has been made with the school via a community agreement. We had quite a bit of vandalism recently and are quite disappointed by this. The police have increased patrols of both sites. Trespassers will be issued with a $550 fine.
Careers Education GrantLast term we applied for a $20,000 grant for implementing a K-12 Model for Careers Aspirations and Education. We are very happy to announce that we were successful in attaining the grant. Next week a small team from the school have been invited to attend the Rural and Remote K-12 Career Education Symposium in Dubbo next week. We will hear presentations from the 2019 participating schools. These schools will report on how they strengthened student transition programs between primary and secondary years whilst implementing a sustainable, innovative careers education program. The symposium is designed to connect rural and remote teachers with quality resources and projects that target the development of student knowledge of careers learning and understanding post-school pathways.
