Well it’s that time of the year, summer is coming to an end and fall is just around the corner. This is just a reminder that our 2015 Member ship drive begins on November 1st, 2014. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you that renewed your memberships in 2014 and thank the 71 new members that joined us this year. NICE CROWD AT CHAMBER COFFEE
We were pleased at the great turnout for the Sep-tember Chamber Coffee held at the Museum.
Our intent is to bring more people into the museum and it seems that it’s working.
At least sixty people came to meet and greet one another, and take ad-vantage of the breakfast treats, juice and coffee provided by our Historical Society team! Many thanks to our Volunteers who helped set up and host our Chamber friends.
It was great to see so many folks at the muse-um. We kept the doors open for an extra hour to allow people more time to browse around. Our as-tute Barbecue & Social ticket sellers moved about 20 tickets at the event, as well! This was yet anoth-er great way to bring peo-ple to the Manteca Muse-um.
Thanks again to all our visi-tors, and those who brought food, or who just came to help!

A bitter-sweet donation
I received an email on Au-gust 27th from past presi-dent, Leon that he had talked with Laurel and Isa-dore Fang about an art do-nation they wanted to make to the Manteca Mu-seum. Leon and wife, Liz, were just on their way to Colorado and Kansas to visit family and friends. He asked if I would call Laurel about it. Come to find out this was no ordinary piece of art, but of a large framed German Glaswerks –designed art piece of Spreckels Sugar. Clancy,
Cynthia and I made ar-rangements with Laurel and Isadore to pick up the art piece on Friday morning, their last day in operation. Isadore and Laurel were both there, but we could only catch Isadore for a quick photo op documenting their donation. It had some-thing to do with make-up, but who’s telling?
Needless to say, the art piece will soon rest on a museum wall, and we can not thank Laurel and Isadore enough for such
a beautiful contribution to the museum, from two great people. They will, of course, be recognized with a plate describing the art piece and their donation.

MEMORIES FROM THE PAST
SPINNING WHEELS
One of the museum exhibits features this small “flax wheel” in the fore ground, hand-crafted in the late 1880s in Sweden. It was donated by Ross and Gladys Salmon.
The larger spinning wheel in the background was called a “walking wheel” and the style was known as a Cana-dian High Wheel. This was owned and used by Heddi Snyder, circa 1880. It was donated by Wade and Phyl-lis Farlow.

With literally thousands of historical photos on hand in the museum, we plan to pick some for the newsletters to re-mind us of our local names and faces. Visit the museum and explore the many photos on hand.
It was a common practice for farmers to help one another ‘get in’ the seasonal crops, and here is a shot of some of the guys taking a photo break while haying on the Bert Davis Ranch in circa 1947. The ranch was just south of Yosemite Avenue on Union Road.
Mark Oliver, Dr. Fred Stellhorn, and Jeff Liotard present-ed the history of Rotary and talked about local and inter-national efforts by Rotarians at the museum’s Septem-ber program night. We learned a good deal about many efforts by Rotarians to make our community and the world a better place. The rest area and bus stop in front of the museum’s Mabel Brocchini Memorial Building, for example, is one of a host of local Rotary projects!
