• Many are spiritually sick.▫ Is 1:4-6.▫ 1 Cor 11:29-31.

God anointed Jesus to bring

healing.

Isaiah 61:1-3

• Three layers of this text.▫ Layer One: What this text meant to the people of Isaiah’s day.▫ Layer Two: What this text meant for Jesus’ ministry (Lk 4:16-21).▫ Layer Three: What this text means for us.

• Jesus came to:▫ A Doctor (v 1b).▫Deliver (v 1c).

Sin will hold us captive (Jn 8:34); however: “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (Jn 8:32). “If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (Jn 8:36).

Jesus also came to release us from the fear of death. Jesus came to “release those who through fear of death were all their

lifetime subject to bondage” (Heb 2:15).

• Jesus came to:▫ Bring a New Day (v 2a-b).

Jesus brings the Year of Jubilee. He also brings “the day of vengeance of our God.”

Jesus did not come to bring God’s vengeance.▫ “God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world

through Him might be saved” (Jn 3:17). The next time He comes?▫ “The Lord Jesus [will be] revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming

fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Thess 1:7-8).

▫ Bring Delight (vv 2c-3).

God anointed Jesus to bring

healing.

• One: Take your cares to Jesus.▫ This world is full of despair.▫ Jesus came to this earth to take away our despair.

Go to His Word to find the strength you need. See how God has helped people in their despair. See God’s promises.▫ Are you worried about death? Remember that “death is swallowed up in victory” (1

Cor 15:54).▫ Are you worried that you have committed sin that even God Himself could not

forgive? Remember Saul of Tarsus.▫ Are you worried because you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel?

Remember He who says that all things work out for good (Rom 8:28). Pray to the Lord up in heaven.

Cast “all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Pet 5:7). Spend time this week pouring your heart out to God.

• Two: Be Jesus in this world.▫We’re called to be Jesus in this world.

“Be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us” (Eph 5:1-2).

“He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked” (1 Jn 2:6).

The church is the body of Christ (1 Cor 12).

• Spend some time thinking about how you can minister in a Christ-like way.▫ Jesus came as a “Doctor” to heal the brokenhearted.▫ Jesus came to “Deliver” those in bondage.▫ Jesus came to bring a new “Day” by announcing the acceptable

year of the Lord. That includes the coming judgment. Whom might you warn that judgment is coming?

John the Baptizer (Matt 3:12). Paul: “As [Paul] reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the

judgment to come, Felix was afraid” (Acts 24:25).

• Jesus came to bring “Delight.”• How can you serve the Lord?
