Master the Mist Watercolor Workshop with David R. Smith Saturday, July 23 rd from 9am – 4pm Location: Maple Grove Community Center 12951 Weaver Lake Road Maple Grove, MN 55369 Cost: $75 Capture the magic of the Boundary Waters In this workshop, we’ll explore techniques to create the illusion of mist. By understanding how water reacts on the paper and how to prepare the paper in such a way, misty effects happen naturally - without scrubbing and lifting. Participants will also learn to create beautiful skies as well as trees that look natural vs mechanical looking trees we might create with too much brushwork. Lastly, you’ll be introduced to painting waves and creating sparkle that draws the eye into the painting. We’ll use what’s learned to develop a misty lake scene. Participants will be provided with a sketch to transfer from, a reference photo, a typed outline (so you can focus on instruction vs taking notes), and step-by-step instruction through all stages of the painting. Hope to see ya there! The classroom will be in the “Banquet Room” (Rm. 103) to provide every participant with plenty of space. David uses a video camera to project the demonstration onto a large screen so everyone will have a great view. Registration due July 15 th . *Must mail in a check to reserve your spot. Limit: 22 Participants. Directions: From the intersection of I94 and 494, head west on I94 (.6 mi.) Take exit 215 onto Weaver Lake Rd. and go .9 mi. Take a right onto Community Center Ln. The Community Center is on your left. When you walk into the Community Center, the Banquet Room is the first room to your left. Material List

- Usual Supplies: palette, water container, two paint boards (could be a sheet of cardboard, I use

foamcore), masking tape, towels, Kleenex, large spray bottle, hair dryer, pencil/eraser, etc. IF you have an iPad/tablet, I recommend bringing it to take demo photos for reference.

- Arches Cold Press 140lb Paper. Bring at least 3 quarter sheets (11x15).

- MonaLisa Graphite Paper or Loew Cornell Gray Transfer Paper (can buy at Michaels art & craft store, JoAnn Fabric) and a colored ball-point pen (red works well). These leave a transfer that is hard to erase, BUT are Dark, so you can see the lines through layers of paint, and will not wash away when wet. If you choose another transfer paper, test it to make sure it will be dark enough to see after a couple washes of color and will not disappear or get too light when wet.

- Tools for lifting/softening highlights: Stiff Bristle Brush or Fritch Scrubber.

- For Part of the process, we will be working at a slant. So, IF you have a table easel, that may come in

handy. However, one can also simply prop one end of the painting board up on a Kleenex box or something.

- Paint: Bring your favorites. I recommend the primaries: Yellow, Red, Blue, and a dark such as Paynes

Gray, Indigo, or Neutral Tint. I typically use: Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Sap Green, Burnt Sienna, and Payne’s Gray, but as long as you have the primaries, you’ll be fine.

- Brushes: A variety of rounds and flats will work fine. I use synthetics (Escoda, Robert Simmons, Loew-

Cornell). Brushes I presently use are: Escoda Rounds (Perla) size 8, 10, 12. Set available on Amazon for around $40 (Joseph Zbukvic’s set). And Escoda Mops (Ultimo Tendo Synthetic) size 14 & 18 (on Amazon for around $36 each). Other brushes I enjoy: a Rigger Brush and sometimes a Flat: 1” or 2”.

- Sponges (are nice, but not absolutely necessary for this workshop): I will demonstrate a technique using

a section of a cellulose cleaning sponge – the readily available rectangular sponges one can purchase at any grocery store (I’ll cut off a small triangular section of it to use as a painting tool).
