EDITORIAL

Another year of @MAR has come to an end and I would just like to thank all of our contributors, bothregular and occasional, for all their great work in 2017. This month we continue our service rundown ofthe Westland Wyvern and look back at the Royal Air Force in July 1944. On a more modern note we be-gin Tom Kaminski’s comprehensive US Army ORBAT.

MEMORIES OF YESTERYEAR - PART 106 1968 - ROY MONTGOMERY

Quite a lot of the flying at the St Mawgan Battle of Britain display on 14 September 1968 was done by the local Shackletons,including MR.2s WG554 ‘V’, WR969’X’, WG558 ‘Y’ and WR964 ‘Z’ from the MOTU, and MR.3s WR977 ‘B’ and XF706 ‘E’from 42 Sqn., all of which were in the same colours as the static examples. Large transport aircraft also played a large part in thedisplay, probably mainly doing flypasts. These included Belfast C.1 XR366 from 53 Sqn, VC-10 XV103 from 10 Sqn, BritanniaC.1 XM497 and Hercules C.1 XV216 from Lyneham, and Andover C.1 XS639 from 46 Sqn. The first three were in the standardASC colours whilst the latter two were in a sand, brown and black camouflage with white serials and ASC wording. The Herculeshad ‘216’ on the front of the nose in day-glo whilst the Andover had ‘639’ on the fin along with the squadron badge and the Abingdonbadge on the nose.

Other larger aircraft included the Vulcan B.2 XM599 possibly from the Cottesmore Wing, Victor B.2 XL192 from the WitteringWing and Nimrod MR.1 XV226 probably being flown from Boscombe Down. The two V bombers were camouflaged with blackserials and although I didn’t seen any badges on the Vulcan, the Victor carried the Wittering yellow rampant lion badge on the fin.The Nimrod was in medium grey with a white top with no other markings seen. Slightly smaller was the Dominie T.1 XS713 ‘C’from 1 ANS. It was light grey with a white roof and red trim, the code was in white on the red part of the fin.

Training aircraft, most probably flying from St Mawgan, included two Chipmunk T.10s from Bristol UAS, WK520 ‘A’ and WG420.WK520 was in silver with strip-day-glo and had a blue spinner and spine fillet, plus the red rudder tip that I saw on the aircraft atExeter in June. WG420 in contrast was in light grey with strip day-glo and the only unique marking was the official badge on awhite disk on the cowling. Gnat T.1 XP542 ‘42’ from 4 FTS was in light grey with red day-glo and black codes but no badge,whilst the Jet Provost T.4s from 2 FTS were silver with strip day-glo and black codes plus the yellow panel on the fin. They mayhave carried the inscription THE VIPERS somewhere but I didn’t make a note if they did. They were XP624 ‘31’, XP669 ‘37’,

LEFT Vulcan B.2 XH555 from 230 OCU in the static at St Mawgan in the regular camouflage scheme at the time.RIGHT Canberra B(I).8 XM273 ‘H’ from 3 Sqn at St Mawgan with the squadron badge and colours on the tail along with the code in

black which was also repeated on the nose wheel door.

Meteor T.7 WH166 ‘27’from the CFS at St Maw-gan with their colours onthe nose.

@MAR 2017 - Page 764

XR667 ‘44’ and one coded ‘32’ that I failed to get the serial of but should have been XR706. Two Hunters from 229 OCU were F.6XJ713 ‘55’ and FR.10 XE596 ‘13’. One other aircraft that I noted as flying was a Belgian Magister ‘MT-IB’ number 270.

Fleet Air Arm participants included Wessex HU.5 XT458 ‘Y/CU’ from 707 Sqn, Sea Vixen FAW.2 XJ582 ‘721/VL’ from 766 Sqn,Buccaneer S.2 XV166 ‘654/LM’ from 736 Sqn and Gannet AEW.3 XL452 ‘766/BY’ from 849 Sqn HQ Flt. They were all in theirregular colours without any variations noted. The final FAA aircraft were Hunter GA.11s from 738 Sqn including XF297 ‘781/BY’,XF301 ‘791/BY’, WT808 ‘792/BY’, WV380 ‘794/BY’, WV374 ‘795/BY and WV267 and XE716 which I suspect were uncoded atthat time. The aircraft were in grey and white with the usual white codes and in addition XF297 also had a day-glo nose, spine andwing tips. As well as the GA.11s I also recorded T.8 WT755 ‘777/BY’ but without any further description or comments.

Some of the other serials that I recorded were visiting Pembroke C.1s WV703 and XK884. The former was from the MCS and wasin light grey with a white roof, blue cheat line and the RAF ASC inscription in full in black on the nose. The latter, from the WCS,was also in light grey with a white top to the roof, a wide blue flash and spinners but no inscription. Other local Shackletons seenaround the airfield wAere MR.2s WG433 ‘R’ and WL787 ‘U’ from the MOTU and an MR.3 with 42 Sqn coded ‘A’ which wasprobably WR978.

The following week it was back to Chivenor again and the regular run of visiting aircraft starting with two Hunter T.7s on 23 September.One was XL622 ‘81’ from 4 FTS whilst the other was another visit from XL601 ‘2’ from West Raynham. Both were in their regularcolours. The following day saw Basset C.1 XS769 from the SCS and two Hiller HT.2s, XS705 ‘40’ and XS171 ‘41’, from 705 Sqn.XS705 was in silver, day-glo and the code in black at the rear of the cabin whilst XS171 was in light grey with day-glo but with thecode in white on the cabin side and repeated in day-glo on the front of the cabin perspex. On the 26th another Hunter T.7 from 4 FTS,XL591 ‘82’, appeared along with Pembroke C.1 XF798 from the WCS. The latter was in light grey with a white roof, blue cheat lineand black RAF AIR SUPPORT COMMAND on the nose.

LEFT Varsity T.1 XD366 ‘16’ from the CFS and also at St Mawgan with the nose colours.RIGHT Jet Provost T.4 XS226 in the Red Pelican colours was the third CFS visitor at St Mawgan with the nose colours although un-

fortunately the blue inscription, serial and code does not show up.

Victor B.2 XL231 from the Wittering Wing with the same yellow fin badge that was on XL192.

@MAR 2017 - Page 765

The 27th saw a bigger influx of visitors including the 19 MU Vampire T.11 WZ476 in plain silver with day-glo strips and a rare CATCSProvost T.1 XF877 ‘A’. The latter was in light grey with strip day-glo and the code in black with a white outline in front of theroundel, plus the official CATCS badge above the fin flash. Devon C.1 WB535 was in light grey with a white top, blue flash andRAF ASC in small black letters on the roof. Other training aircraft to visit that day included Hunter F.6 XG204 ‘70’ from 4 FTS anda Jet Provost T.4 from the CAW. The Hunter was camouflaged with the code in black on a large white disk on the sides of the nosethat was repeated on the fin. The Jet Provost was XR658 ‘36’ and was in light grey with strip day-glo, the code was in large digitson the sides of the nose and was repeated on the fin, but the usual CAW badge on the rear fuselage was missing.

October started with two Sioux AH.1s appearing on the 1st. These were XT149 ‘H’ and XT813 ‘X’ from the ARWF in the normalAAC camouflage with white serials and codes and day-glo patches. The following day saw Canberra B.2 WJ641 from 231 OCU insilver with day-glo strips on the nose, rear fuselage and fin, and with a single strip on the wing tip tanks. The serial was in large blackdigits painted onto the rear fuselage day-glo and was repeated in full on the nose wheel doors. It also had a white code on the frontof the black anti-dazzle panel that I didn’t record but would have been ‘D’. Another Sioux AH.1 that day was XT515 ‘F’ from 41Commando Air Troop in their usual colours.

On the 4th I saw my first aircraft in the new red and white training scheme that was starting to replace the then current day-glo strips.This was on Jet Provost T.4 XS216 ‘19’ from the CAW. I recorded this as being red on the lower fuselage, the wing tip tanks andthe tail plane, it had light grey wings and elevators, and white on the upper fuselage including the fin and rudder. The code was inblack on the fin and the top of the flaps, but at this stage no badges or other markings were carried. One other visitor that day wasBasset C.1 XS774 from the SCS in the regular Air Support Command colours.

Wasp HAS.1 XT426 ‘80’ from 706 Sqn along with Jet Provost T.4 XP683 ‘51’ from 1 FTS both appeared on 7 October whilst thefollowing day saw Basset C.1 XS765 from the SCS and Vampire T.11 WZ476 from 19 MU. All were in their regular colours of thetime. On the following day Hunter T.7A XL616 in plain silver visited from the A&AEE whilst local T.7 XL583 was flown to 5MUfor maintenance and XL592 ‘84’ was brought back to Chivenor. Auster AOP.9 XR243 from 19 MU in camouflage and day-gloappeared again on the 15th along with Meteor T.7 VW478 ‘P’ from 3 CAACU and Hunter T.7 WV318 from the A&AEE. The Hunterwas in light grey with day-glo strips but the Meteor was silver with solid red day-glo on the nose, rear fuselage and fin with the codein black only appearing on the fin. That day also saw another Hunter T.7 visit which intrigued me because it was in bare metal finish

LEFT Hunter F.6 XG190 ‘70’ from 4 FTS displaying the same style of code application that I saw on F.6 XG204.RIGHT ioux AH.1 XT149 ‘H’ of the ARWF with the code on the front of the cabin although here the word ARMY is in black, and an

AAC badge is above the roundel where the code normally appeared.

LEFT Hunter T.7 XF310 seen at Chivenor in a bare metal finish with the stenciled serial on the fuselage.RIGHT Beaver AL.1 XP817 of 132 Flt RCT with the same modified roundel and badges that I saw on XP820.

@MAR 2017 - Page 766

with no national markings at all and the serial XF310 was only stenciled onto the rear fuselage in small black digits. At one time Idid wonder if it was being used for some sort of covert use but I think that it was then used by 5 MU and for some reason they hadnever got around to painting it. Especially as it appeared again later in the year still unpainted.

Pembroke C.1 WV741 from the WCS appeared on the 16th in the usual colours but a more interesting visitor the next day was BeaverAL.1 XP820 from 132 Flt. This was in the usual green and earth camouflage with black serials and ARMY, a red spinner with the132 Flt badge at the top of the fin and the Strategic Reserve badge on the nose. More interesting was the fuselage roundels that wereonly about half size with a narrow white ring, comparable to the old ‘C’ style roundels. Another WCS Pembroke C.1 seen on the 21st

was XF798 whilst the following day saw a visitor from Germany in the form of Hunter FR.10 XE605 ‘O’ from 2 Sqn. It was innormal camouflage with black serials, black and white squadron colours on the fuselage in line with the top of the roundel and thecode in black on a white triangle on the fin. This was repeated in white on a black nose wheel door and the pilot’s name FLT. LT.WILKINS was in 2” high white letters on the port side of the nose.

The 19 MU Auster AOP.9 XR243 visited on the 24th with Basset C.1 XS782 from the SCS on the 28th. The same day saw Jet ProvostT.4 XP619 ‘40’ from 2 FTS in silver with day-glo strips and the code on the nose in black that was repeated on the yellow fin panel.Visitors in October ended on the 29th with the ETPS Hunter T.7 XL579. I recorded the overall colour as being a brick red (may notbe too accurate) with a white cockpit area, spine, fin and rudder. The serials were in white as was the code ‘25’ behind the roundel.

November visitors started on the 1st with another Beaver AL.1 from 132 Flt in the form of XP807. It was camouflaged with the samebadges as on XP820 but I failed to record if it had the new style roundels or not. That same day also saw another return for the 4AEF Chipmunk T.10 WK589 ‘A’. For some reason I recorded nothing for the next week but then a very interesting Jet Provost T.4appeared on the 8th in the form of XS178 from Cranwell. It was in the new red and white training colours with the College’s blueband around the rear fuselage, but instead of being coded it had a wing commander’s pennant on the fin. The following days sawsome more regular Cranwell Jet Provost T.4s in silver with day-glo strips, fuselage bands and black codes on the fin and repeated onthe front of the nose. These were XR643 ‘76’ and XP586 ‘90’ on the 12th, and XP565 ‘80’ on the 15th. Other local movements onthe 15th was the ferrying of XE627 ‘61’ to 19 MU at St Athan for maintenance with the pilot returning in XF515.

Towards the end of 1968 I managed to get into the Flying Wing HQ were there were a large number of photos lining the walls. Thesewere course photos, often in front of aircraft which included a couple of Hunter F.1s where the nose wheel door was visible. One in1955 was WW644 ‘K’ whose door was silver with the code and the serial in small digits at the top in black. A year later WT695 ‘S’was in similar colours except that this time the door was red with the code and serial in white. Some of the Sabre courses must havebeen photographed by the side of the aircraft because here I recorded XB644 ‘B’ with a white nose cap and XB723 ‘U’. both aircrafthad white fin codes, along with XB813 that was apparently without a code at the time of the photo.

UK SERIALSThis is the latest part of a series (part one appeared in the December 2008 @MAR) where we look at the allocation and fate of aircraftgiven UK serials. The data is taken from the UK Serials Resource Centre run by the Wolverhampton Aviation Group and we aregrateful to Tom McGhee and Mick Boulanger for their permission to use the information. The site can be found at www.ukserials.comand is well worth a visit as it contains a wealth of other information of interest to the aviation historian.The following are some of the common abbreviations used -(C) Cockpit D/D Delivery Date F/F First FlightNTU Not Taken Up SS Sold as Scrap SOC Struck off ChargeW/O Written off WFU Withdrawn from UsePlease note that these details are not meant to be a history of the aircraft in service - that would be an enormous undertaking - merelya record of the aircraft’s introduction into service and where it came from (if not a newly manufactured airframe) and its final fate andsubsequent disposal.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

PART 1 US ARMY AVIATION 2017 - TOM KAMINSKI

A reorganization of the US Army Aviation Branch, known as the Aviation Restructure Initiative (ARI), began in Fiscal Year 2015(FY15). Under ARI the service inactivated one active component (AC) combat aviation brigade (CAB), restructured another and begandivesting older helicopters from its inventory. Additionally, it has restructured nine AC CABs and Reserve Component (RC) units willbe reorganized as Expeditionary CABs.

The result of Army analysis of its aviation force structure that began in January 2013, ARI was influenced by fiscal constraints that wereimposed by the sequestration provision of the Budget Control Act of 2011, which took effect in March 2013.

A resulting force-structure proposal enabled the Army to retain its most modern and capable aircraft while “rebalancing” combatcapabilities across the regular Army, Army National Guard (ARNG) and the US Army Reserve Command (USARC). Approved by theArmy Chief of Staff in October 2013, the initiative called for the elimination of nearly 800 aircraft from Army inventory by divestingthe entire fleet of 368 OH-58D Kiowa Warriors and replacing the cavalry squadron’s scout helicopters with larger, more capableAH-64D/E attack helicopters. Each of the restructured Heavy Attack Reconnaissance Squadrons (H-ARS) also gained a platoon with12 RQ-7B unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).

Unfortunately, because the Regular Army’s inventory didn’t include enough Apaches to replace the Kiowa Warriors, the plan called forremoving all 192 Apaches from the ARNG inventory and transferring the attack helicopters to the AC. The moves would also result inthe ARNG being restructured to a new Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade (ECAB) structure that features additional aerial medicalevacuation (MEDEVAC) and utility aircraft. The ARI replaced the ARNG Apaches with 159 additional UH-60s that would be assignedto four ARNG and two USARC assault helicopter battalions (AHB), which would enable them to meet support, lift and medicalevacuation requirements at home and abroad. The transition of two ARNG and the two USARC Apache units had been authorized bythe Army Chief of Staff prior to ARI.

Ultimately the Army followed the recommendation of the National Commission on the Future of the Army and allowed the ARNG toretain four Apache battalions that would each operate a reduced pool of just 18 helicopters rather than the normal 24. A final decisionon the deployment of the ARNG fleet is expected “in the near future”.

The ARI also called for retiring the OH-58A/C and TH-67A helicopters that supported Army training efforts at Fort Rucker, Alabama,and replacing them with UH-72A Lakotas. Once the restructuring is completed in 2019, the Army’s rotary wing fleet will comprise theCH-47, UH-60, AH-64 and UH-72 helicopters.

Part 1 of this feature provides an overview of the majority active duty US Army aviation units. Subsequent parts will provide a rundownof the Reserve Components and Fixed Wing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance/special electronic mission aircraft(ISR/SEMA).

CHILESome nice historical data from on official FACh bulletin dated 6May44 has come to light courtesy of Tony Beales. We'll look at it over thenext few months.A lot of it corrects previously published data - often down to the age-old habit of assuming that everything runs in order…We'll start with the Douglas A-24B. The USAAF serials are taken from the bulletin, the c/ns filled in to match.701 Douglas A-24B702 Douglas A-24B703 17152 Douglas A-24B ex 42-54313704 17185 Douglas A-24B ex 42-54346705 Douglas A-24B706 17186 Douglas A-24B ex 42-54347707 17148 Douglas A-24B ex 42-54309708 17229 Douglas A-24B ex 42-54390709 17230 Douglas A-24B ex 42-54391710 17231 Douglas A-24B ex 42-54392711 17232 Douglas A-24B ex 42-54393712 17228 Douglas A-24B ex 42-54389The missing three are: 17182 Douglas A-24B ex 42-54343 17183 Douglas A-24B ex 42-54344 17184 Douglas A-24B ex 42-54345Secondly, we have the NA AT-6B. Both the c/n and previous USAAF serial appear on the list. Details for 220 and 221 are missing becauseboth had been lost by May 44. The list is interesting in that c/n 81-7422 (41-17045) is missing, which leads to the following aircraft slippingone from the usually accepted version of events. This leads to a problem, as 41-17054 is usually said to have gone to Peru.
