Physiotherapist and owner Robinder Gill has been with the 18-year-old clinic for the past four years and brought with him 14 years of clinical experience. He aims to not only rehabilitate clients, but also educate them to be their own physiotherapist.

Through a holistic approach, exercise programs, and electro-therapeutic interventions, North Kamloops Physiotherapy supports patients in managing their acute and chronic conditions, rehabilitating injuries and dealing with the effects of disease or disability. Common conditions they treat include whiplash, sprains, strains, chronic neck and back pain, plantar fasciitis and heel spurs, tennis elbow, sciatica and biomechanical issues.

“We do a full assessment to see what the problem is,” Gill said. “The rehabilitation plan incorporates treating patients clinic through education about a self-management process

Robin uses shockwave therapy, an intense but short energy wave that travels faster than the speed of sound, to treat chronic pain and restore mobility. Through 20-30 minute sessions, shockwave therapy

helps in tissue regeneration and provides an accelerated recovery of soft tissue. It is used to treat tendonitis issues, as well as tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, neck pain, back pain and shoulder pain. The

treatment has no side effects and is 100 per cent non-invasive.

Robin also practices Gunn intramuscular stimulation (IMS), commonly known as dry needling, to relieve chronic pain. Using acupuncture needles, Gill can treat tight,

shortened and tensed-up muscle bands, which can affect the functioning of the nervous system.

Gill also specializes in golf rehabilitation and has FITforeGOLF training and certification. He is passionate about helping golfers stay on top of their game.

“If someone wants to get back to their golf game after an injury, I can train them with exercises specific to the biomechanics of golf,” Gill said, adding that it caters to both the competitive and amateur golfer.

The clinic also uses a 3D orthotic GaitsScan system to statically and dynamically scan the arches of the feet in standing and walking. For someone who stands at work or walks or runs a lot and has developed, foot, leg, back or knee pain, custom orthotics can help. Gill offers a free scan to determine whether orthotics are needed.

At North Kamloops Physiotherapy Clinic, they believe in good care.

“ The end goal is the patient being educated enough to manage their own problems,” Gill said. “If you can teach the patient to manage it, they are more than happy.”

Prescription AssistanceAny time you are taking more than one medication, there is a risk they could have a negative effect on each other. The Rexall Medication Review service was created for people who are regularly taking multiple medications, as it is vital the medications you take are compatible with each other.“We just go through everything and make sure everything prescription and over the counter is compatible, so they aren’t counteracting or depleting your medications or your medications aren’t depleting what you’re actually taking supplements for,” said Jennifer Perozak, pharmacy manager at City View Rexall.Any over-the-counter medication, such as vitamins or supplements, cough and cold or pain-relief medication, has the potential to interact with prescription medications. Perozak said there is almost always going to be some sort of interaction, but whether or not it is significant enough to justify a switch is something a pharmacist can recommend. Perozak said the most commonly recommended supplements are B complex, which helps with your body’s metabolism, calcium to help keep your bones strong, decrease the risk of fractures and prevent osteoporosis and vitamin D to help with calcium absorption and to aid the general lack of vitamin D we get in Canada. “In general, we would do a review every time we talk to the patient,” Perozak said. “It’s a matter of making sure everything is still compatible.”

Why Rexall Medication Review? 1. Demystifies complex drugs or complicated regimens 2. Provides a comprehensive review of all your medication 3. Gives you the ability to get answers to all your questions 4. Resolves any drug-related issues 5. Create a care plan to help you reach your health goals 6. Receive an accurate list of your medications to take with you pre-hospitalization 7. Get all new medication information post-hospitalizationFor more information visit rexall.ca

Your Complete Wealth PlanMARK BERTOLIManaging partner, Abbott Wealth Management

Wealth plan

The day will come when we realize “I really do need to get serious about by retirement.”

In this edition of Your Complete Wealth Plan, we will look at a few of the key components and action steps we need to take when we finally realize “it’s time to get serious about my retirement.” It’s time to plan.

Do I have an investment strategy? From the age of 55, we enter what are most commonly known as the major earning years. Our kids are on their own, hopefully we have finished paying for university, our homes are paid off and now we have major disposable income. Lurking in the back of our minds is the fact that, from age 55 to age 65, we only have 120 months left to save.

It is hugely important to create and maintain your own investment discipline. Warren Buffett said, “To invest successfully over a lifetime does not require a stratospheric IQ, unusual business insights or inside information. What’s needed is a sound intellectual framework for making decisions and the ability to keep emotions from corroding that framework.”

These are words not to be taken lightly. We are in very volatile and uncertain times that require very care-ful navigation. You can work hard, save diligently and sacrifice, only to have your investments decline in value and your retirement plan go off track. Emotion is one of the top threats to your investments and retirement success. A strong investment strategy that is adhered to is one of your greatest defences.

Do I have a clear picture of what my retirement income looks like?Remember — if we fail to plan, we plan to fail. It is very easy to put money away every month, hoping our retirement will be full of golfing under palm trees or sailing in the tropics. However, this is definitely not the reality. In most cases, we find people have failed to complete detailed planning and are merely hoping for a positive outcome. This is no different than putting gas in your car and starting to drive. “I don’t know where I am going, but I sure hope it is going to be nice.” The key here is to develop a clear picture of what your retirement looks like and ask the question, “Is my current plan going to get me there?”

How do I deal with market declines and volatility in retirement?Market declines and volatility are when your investments receive their greatest threats. These times are also triggers for emotional investment decisions. The threat to your investments compounds when you are withdrawing funds or using your investments for income. There are, however, very specific strategies and tools to shelter you, your investments and your retirement from this very real threat.

Why do professional Teams, golfers and athletes have coaches?

Have you ever wondered why the very best, the elite, have coaches? Tiger Woods in his prime, was without a doubt, the very best golfer on the planet. Yet, between tournaments he was working with his coach. There is great value in advice. A recent study by the Investment Funds Institute of Canada (2012) reviewed some very interesting facts and outcomes with respect to quantified results.

Research shows clients who work with advisors:

1. Accumulate greater wealth

2. Are more prepared for retirement

3. Select tax-efficient investments

4. Stick to their long-term plans

5. Make informed investment decisions about investing

Earlier, we asked the questions; Do I have an investment strategy? Do I have a clear picture of what my retirement looks like? How do I deal with market declines and volatility in retirement?

Working with an advisor that you have a strong fit with can help answer all of these questions and more.

Think of your advisor as your retirement advocate. This is your first experience with retirement, or retirement planning. It is nice to know that you can team up with someone who can advise you and provide experienced navigation through this important time in your life.

This is an open forum. On behalf of the entire Abbott Wealth Team, we would encourage suggestions or questions that we can address in future editions. Please feel free to contact us at:

[email protected].

Know what to look for in online scamsWith growing communication avenues, fraudsters have more and more ways to access people and private information. A fraud-awareness program is offered through the Seniors Information Centre that offers education in identity theft, credit-card fraud, charity scams, investment fraud, affinity fraud and Internet fraud, with information provided by the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

“We try to stress that people be really aware of their personal information, about giving it out to people they don’t know,” said program volunteer Ona McDonalnd. “A lot of these things are just common sense, but you would be surprised at how many people aren’t aware.”

Alan Robinson, a volunteer with the program, said seniors used to be the most susceptible to Internet fraud in particular, but now anyone can be a target.

The most important thing is to be skeptical and not follow links or attachments that come from an unfamiliar source because, once you open it, it could already be too late.

Phishing is a popular technique used by fraudsters to acquire sensitive information by appearing to be a trustworthy organization. However, banks and government agencies don’t request information via email, so you should never give out private information through that avenue.

A popular one around this time is a request from a fraudulent source claiming to be the Canadian Revenue Agency asking for personal information, such as social security, credit card, bank account or passport information. Usually the sender will claim the victim will be getting a refund payment or benefit. The CRA is aware of the scam and continues to reiterate it doesn’t request personal information from taxpayers via email.

Cyber ransom, a type of blackmail that restricts access to your computer, has also grown in popularity. It’s usually used to extort money from the victim, using phishing emails or websites that contain a malicious program.

The fraud-awareness program offers free presentations to groups of 10 or more. For more information call 778-470-6000 or visit csikamloops.ca/fraud-awareness.htm.

Freedom From pain

The benefits of yoga for people

of all ages

T he ability to stay active becomes harder and harder with age. For 64-year-old Lynne Kraushar, it became apparent a long time ago that

wellness takes a team. After discovering what yoga could do for her, she made the practice a permanent player on her team.

Kraushar suffered from chronically being out of alignment, causing back pain and hip pain. She became a certified rolfer when she realized its benefits, but the work also strained her body. Yoga not only helped with her pain, but allowed her to keep flexible and strong in a way that her body could handle, she said.

“First of all it just started out as a necessity, just to manage the pain and to keep me working,” she said. “Now, it’s been getting up every day and feeling like you can move and not having things go out of place.”

“It amazes me at what I can do and it just gets better all the time, even though I’m getting older.”

Kraushar started practising yoga on her own 15 years ago but has been a member at the Yoga Loft, where she attends classes around three times a week, since it opened in 2012.

Owner and teacher Marcia Wilson said their demographic has always been mature. In designing the programs, she recognized one class doesn’t fit all, and was adamant about having a range of classes to meet different needs. She sees people walk through her door with back pain, joint pain, arthritis, hip pain, shoulder problems, people with MS or fibromyalgia and people who have suffered heart attacks or been in car accidents.

The instructors come from a range of backgrounds, including massage therapy, kinesiology, social work and therapeutics.

“One of the things that was really important to me when I opened it was sustainability, the idea of how do we create activities with our life that you can use through a continuum,” said WIlson, who works as an occupational therapist. “As I age — I’m in my mid-40s now — I’m becoming more aware that my historical way of doing things doesn’t work anymore.”

As you age, you lose muscle mass and range lose range of motion. Wilson said there is a way to maintain your physical and mental health without stepping into something that is necessarily challenging.

Yoga classes range from strong-flow to gentle and restorative. All have benefits that reach beyond what is visible on the outside.

“Some people think you’re doing a bit of stretching but you’re not going to be working on strength or work your heart — but that’s not true,” said instructor Angie Edgson.

Through the movements, you are increasing the synovial fluid to the joints, which helps them to be pain-free and to last longer, she said. Weight-bearing poses build bone density. Your internal organs are massaged, which helps them to function more efficiently, cleanse and flush out. You’re increasing blood flow to the brain and you get your heart rate going.

Main FeatURe

Page 9: March 10, 2015

SavvyTHOMPSON RIVERPUBLICATIONS 50+ Crowd 9

Wilson said the movements activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which allows you to be calm rather than stimulating your sympathetic nervous system — your “fight or flight” response — which is more of a state of being reactive.

“People get very oriented to what you can see, like muscles and bones, but all of the other layers — your endocrine system, your respiratory system, stimulating the vagus nerve. If you don’t know a lot about the body, then you would have no idea,” Wilson said.

Yoga will take your practice and put it where it’s needed, Edgson said. If you have high blood pressure, it can bring it down. If you have low blood pressure, it can bring it up. If your thyroid is out of balance, it can bring it back to the midline.

“There a lot of things that we don’t see and the integration of the yoga and the relaxation at the end, your body just puts in where it needs it,” Edgson said.

There is also a strong mental component to yoga and Wilson said she has never considered yoga just a physical practice. There is a mindfulness that comes with it. It’s giving you the time to think, ground yourself and listen to what your body is telling you. After feeling disconnected and stressed, yoga can give you a bit of time away from the rest of the world.

For Wilson, practising yoga has helped her get off many medications she took after a life of triathlons and developing asthma — prednisone four times a year — and simply helps her feel more human.

“It’s freedom from pain. Freedom to be able to do the things you want to do,” she said.

That could mean continuing to ski or run, decrease your falls risk or be able to pick up your grandchildren for many years to come.

T he world of cruising is constantly innovating and

revolutionizing the travel experience! Getting to each exciting port of call is only part of the journey, as the ships themselves are now destinations. As new cruise ships are being built and old ships are being refurbished, the focus of cruise companies is to deliver cutting-edge and refined experiences. Each year, cruise lines invest millions of dollars in order to deliver the most innovative and creative onboard amenities and features. With cruise ships moving into the spotlight as the marvel of modern architecture, state-of-the art ships are being built with an unrelenting attention to detail, adding to the traveling experience!

Cruising offers travelers the chance to unwind in modern amenities and luxurious spaces, and the chance to completely explore the best of their dream destinations; combining the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure! While onboard you can savor delicious meals created by master chefs, and on land you can experience culturally authentic local flavors. Of course one of the biggest bonuses of taking a fabulous cruise vacation is also the fact that you only have to unpack once and you can travel to far-reaching dream destinations all in one trip.

Most of all, while you make your way to the most idyllic destinations you’ll be taken there in complete bliss with gracious service, exquisite dining, world-class amenities, lively entertainment, relaxing spas and the freedom to enjoy them at your own pace! The incredible value of cruising extends beyond life onboard; a cruise can take you to a plethora of destinations around the world — all in one trip with everything planned out for you in advance. Once you set sail, your biggest concern will be how to relax, making cruising the perfect way to escape the ordinary and enjoy something extraordinary! We’ve put together a variety of tips to make the most of your first cruise!

Seniors CruisingMillions of seniors choose to cruise for the service, food, ease of movement, amazing itineraries and all- inclusive nature. Many cruise lines cater to the older market, with a variety of onboard seniors

cruise programs and amenities, such as gentleman hosts, enrichment lectures, medical facilities, facilities for the disabled, special diets and programs for those who bring their grandkids along (read below for more details).

Every cruise line appeals to a different age and style of passenger. Holland America Line, Celebrity Cruises, and Princess Cruises generally cater to older travelers in the moderately-priced cruise category. The Yachts of Seabourn, Cunard Line, Silversea Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and Crystal Cruises cater to older travelers in the luxury cruise category.

Gentleman Hosts

In a desire to enhance the cruise experience for unescorted, female, senior travelers, many luxury cruise lines have introduced a “gentleman host” program. These hosts are carefully screened and available for dining, dancing, enjoying onboard activities and accompanying ladies on shore excursions. This program is offered on Crystal Cruises, Cunard Line, and Holland America Line.

Enrichment Lectures

From music and art to sports, cooking, wine, and current events, there is something to enlighten the most-seasoned traveler on today’s cruise ships. Every cruise line offers dockside lecturers to give history and details about the port. Many lines are also featuring prominent celebrities or speakers to speak on relationships, anthropology, make-up, films, sailing, hockey and much more.

Medical Facilities

All cruise ships are fully equipped with both medical facilities and a doctor. Passengers are encouraged to notify their cruise consultant about special medical needs prior to sailing. This way, the ship can stock appropriate medications should they become necessary.

Facilities for the Disabled

Cruise ships nowadays have excellent facilities for disabled travelers. While the newer ships are generally better than older ones, and facilities vary by cruise line, most cruise ships have wheelchair-accessible cabins, ramps, and elevators.

Princess Cruises publishes a brochure called Love Boat Access that answers all questions regarding their disabled facilities. It informs passengers about their amazing facilities like wheelchair-accessible

cabins, a wheelchair gangway mechanism, Braille elevator buttons, visual smoke detectors, doorknocker sensors, and text telephones.

Special Diets

While many people go on a cruise to enjoy the amazing cuisine, cruise lines understand that many people are on a special diet. That is why ships today carry a lighter choices section on their menu as well as vegetarian and kosher menus. Options include low-sodium, low-fat, low-cholesterol, and sugar-free entrees, and desserts. Be sure to inform your cruise consultant and maitre d’ should you have any extra-special dietary needs.

Cruising with Grandchildren

Cruising is an excellent way to bridge the generation gap with fun activities for people of all ages. Grandparents can spend the day taking in a lecture, reading by the pool or betting in the casino. The grandkids can participate in organized children’s activities, play in the pool or watch a movie. Then everyone gets together for a dinner with grandparent and kid-friendly food before taking in a night of activities fit for kids of all ages.

Please note: While many mainstream cruise lines offer children’s activities year-round, most luxury cruise lines only offer organized children’s activities during peak family seasons like summer vacation and Christmas. Be sure to have your cruise consultant check if activities are offered when you want to sail.

Life Onboard

What to expect:

There is never a dull moment aboard a cruise ship; with onboard events such as live performances, impromptu poolside parties, cooking classes, enrichment activities, adult only decks, water activities, specialty programs, and a whole lot of other activities, you’ll always have something to keep you busy. How you choose to spend your day onboard is entirely up to you! Each cruise line is different, but every cruise line is designed to optimize your vacation adventure or assist in allowing you to relax onboard, whichever you choose to do.

No matter which cruise line you choose for your dream vacation you can expect gracious and exceptional service, all you have to do is

In The GardenThe warm weather has people already thinking about their lawns and gardens. Colin Lyons of Lyons Landscaping said everything is happening much earlier this year. He offered some tips for getting started on your yard work:

In your yard, you want to be doing your deadheading, which is cutting •down your grasses that are dead so the new ones can rise up.

Remove all the dead leaves around plants, but you have to be careful •with this because we could still get some frost or snow. You don’t want really cold temperatures to damage the new buds or new blossoms that are coming. It’s a catch-22, but be aware that it is going to need to get cleaned up.

Help your lawn breathe. On your grass areas where the snow was piled, •you can rake and let the air get at it. Start to prepare your lawn by raking and cleaning up, removing needles and all the debris or grass that has been covered under piles of snow so you don’t end up with burnt spots or dead spots.

Now is a great time to get your pruning done. It is too late for maples, •but for fruit trees or any of your other trees, now is a great time to get it done.

If you’re thinking about your landscaping project, now is a great time to •get it done before the grass really comes back to life or starts to grow. If you were thinking about doing a xeriscape, or removing some grass to get water-efficient, now is a great time to think of those things. You haven’t turned the sprinklers on yet, but you can remove grass and turn grass into xeriscape areas, change your planting beds, clean the bark-mulch out and get ready with a commercial filter fabric and put a rock mulch down. It’s a fantastic time to do things like that right now.

Lyons is open seven days a week, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Right now is a great •time to pick up your seeds for your vegetable garden. Start thinking about your garden and what you’re going to do this year.

Our rule of thumb in Kamloops has always been May long weekend for •vegetable gardening. However, this year you can probably risk it and get things going a bit early. Sometimes, when there is a heavier frost all of a sudden, the plants will be stunted, so you have to be careful and still cover things up.

If your soil is loose enough, you can plant some spring bulbs. Now is a •great time to pick up bark mulch and mulch your beds before things really start to pop up.

If you’re looking at different statues or fountains to place in areas, do it •now. A lot of people leave this until their landscape has really grown up in the summer and then they trample through their heavily planted garden. But, now is the time to pick up those things and get it in so it’s in your garden and you don’t damage anything while installing it.

People have been doing a lot of water-feature work already this year on •their ponds. It’s a great time to start getting your pond cleaned up and get it going for the year.

For most people, estate planning will be about more than just a will. For many, estate planning will benefit from input from each of a financial advisor, ac-countant and lawyer. Each of us comes from a slightly different perspective and the sum of those perspectives produces the best results. The amount of input from each, and the level of sophistica-tion of any plan, will depend much on the individual circumstances of the person making the plan.

For most people, what we call an estate plan will consist of at least the discus-sion of a will, power of attorney, and health care representation agreement, the use of beneficiary designations

and joint ownership of assets. In this article and in the next few issues of Savvy, I will outline some general ideas about the role that each of these may play in your plan. I will also touch on the use of trusts that may be contained in your will (called “testamentary trusts”).

I will not discuss sophisticated tax-reduction strategies, the use of life insurance or inter vivos trusts (trusts established during your lifetime). Those are, generally speaking, driven by very specific circumstances.

Please remember that this article is intended to be informational only and is not intended to consti-tute legal advice of any kind.

I will begin with the discussion of the role of a power of attorney.

What a power of attorney document does is allow someone else (the attorney) to do certain things for another person (the donor) with respect to the donor’s financial affairs

A power of attorney may designate certain specific or restricted things that the attorney can do. An example of where this might be is to allow a trusted person to sign sale documents for selling your house while you are out of the country.

More often used is a general power of attorney, where there are no limits or restrictions on what the attorney may do. Most of these that are prepared by lawyers will be what is known as an endur-ing power of attorney”. It is called “enduring” because it endures through any subsequent mental infirmity.

Most people will make a power of attorney against the possibility that they lose capacity before they die. Because they have not died, their will is not effective. If they need help with their financial af-fairs, the attorney will provide this.

Surprisingly few people think of making a power of attorney, but imagine the difficulties of one spouse trying to sell a jointly owned house or insuring a car in the other spouse’s name when that other spouse has lost capacity.

A power of attorney may offer a more affordable and flexible alternative to obtaining a committee-ship order from the court and accounting to the public guardian and trustee.

Obviously, careful consideration must be given to who will act as your attorney. For most spouses, they will designate each other, but an alternate is often a good idea in case your spouse dies before you or becomes incapable and unable to help you.

Powers of attorney are powerful instruments and you will wish to discuss the risks and benefits of making one with a lawyer. At Morelli Chertkow LLP you can discuss powers of attorney, wills and other components of an estate plan that are right for you with either myself or Ben van der Gracht.

Next time, I will discuss some of the reasons for making a will and what kinds of information will help your lawyer in ensuring your wishes are carried out.
