First Sunday of Lent / Primer Domingo de Cuaresma 2
“A Man Reaps What He Sows”
Lent is a time of growth. It is a time of intense spir-itual exercises such as praying, fasting and doing charitable works of mercy. In fact, in a sense, it is an annual retreat for the entire Catholic Church (and many Christian churches that participate with us in Lenten observances). Thus, what is often said to partici-pants at a retreat applies to us as well: “You get out of it what you put into it.” St. Paul says it best; “Do not be de-ceived; God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” “The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully” (Gal 6:7-8; 2 Cor 9:6).
So I truly encourage you take advantage of this golden opportunity to grow in your relationship with God. To help you, Sacred Heart Parish has lined up various spiritual activities. You will find more details about them in our bulletin, on our website, and social media outlets. Here are some of the activities:
1. Lectio Divina, books for spiritual reading – The Big-gest Lie in the History of Christianity by Matthew Kelly for adults and for children, Jesus, Our Friend and Teacher by Anne E. Neuberger 2. University Series runs from March 7 through April 19 with multiple workshops and conferences. Series bro-chures are available in the office and the vestibule of the church 3. 24 hours weekly adoration continues every Friday 4. Adoro Te: Come Spend an Hour With Me – a special one-hour-adoration service for the entire parish on March 15 at 7pm in the church 5. Sacred Heart Soul Food – we will send you well-made spiritual videos through flocknote 6. Religious Education Congress – a three-day power-ful spiritual revival at Anaheim from March 22 through 24 7. Penance services – throughout Lent we will publish in our bulletin the dates for all the penance services in the area, to enable you go to confession I pray that God may bless us abundantly through these spiritual activities, our communal liturgies, and our Lenten observances. May he help us during this season of grace, to know Our Lord and the power of his resurrec-tion more intimately. May we grow in our understanding of the riches hidden in Christ, and by worthy conduct, experience their effects in our lives, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Every so often I get a call or text from a former teen who wants to talk because they don’t know where else to go. These are some of my favorite moments in ministry. The reason is because these individuals are coming home. 9 times out of ten these are people who haven't been to church in a while and want to get back into things and are looking for guidance and counseling. Whenever this happens, I hear Ozzy Osbourne’s “Momma I’m Coming Home” playing in my head, well at least I hear the chorus of that song. I always feel like lent is that time of year where people come. A study was recently done that showed that even people who don’t practice their faith that much anymore make a point to go to mass on Ash Wednesday which we just passed. The reason for this is because they inherently know that Ash Wednesday is important, and they want to be part of the faith again and this is where they start. Lent is not just a season of repentance and prayer but also a season of welcoming home those in the flock who have been away for a while. Let us pray for the lost and when they come home let us welcome them with open arms. Upcoming Events: March 13-Youth Group March 14-Edge March 17-Year 2

DID YOU KNOW? Trained adults can take steps to
prevent suspicion The Protecting God’s Children program is in place to raise awareness about behaviors of adults that may indicate a threat to the safety of children and young people. Through this program, trained adults learn how to prevent abuse from happening, in part by taking steps to eliminate suspicious behaviors, such as being alone with a young person. Creating a culture of openness and transparency goes a long way towards alleviating concerns of inappropriate behavior by adults, and helps children feel safe in their environment. For a full copy of the VIRTUS® article “Applying Principles of the Protecting God’s Children Program,” visit http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.
