A LITTLE CO-OP HISTORY The Otter District Farmer’s Institute was incorporated in 1922 with twenty-fi ve members in order to promote agriculture and agricultural knowledge, to work for farm legislation to improve farm conditions and to buy supplies at cost for its Members. One of the original bylaws said the aim of the Institute was to improve conditions of rural life so that settlement may
be permanent and prosperous. This bylaw and many others remained in effect until June 22, 1979 when we offi cially became a co-op. It was the 1930’s when we started supplying feed to the local farmer. During the 1950’s a need developed to supply local residents with petroleum products. We now have a modern Bulk Plant which supplies petroleum products to farms and heating fuels to homes in the area. We now have
fi ve gas bars being Ladner, Surrey, Otter, Gloucester and Abbotsford. We have been in the Retail business since the 1930’s running a general store and fi nally in the 1940’s a small retail facility to our now 50,000 sq ft store, selling groceries, hardware, drygoods and pharmacy. In 2009 we amalgamated with Consumers Co-op in Pitt Meadows. In 2011 we were very excited to be able to open a Produce Store and a Pharmacy
in Glen Mountain, Abbotsford. Our organization is a member owned business with an elected nine person Board of Directors. Your Co-op strives to meet the needs of its members and the community it services while providing an economic benefi t by way of patronage dividends. We provide a one stop shopping service for all Farm & Home requirements and we are proud of celebrating 90 Years in the Community.
If you are a grade twelve student and your family has spent at least $2000 in the prior year, you are eligible to apply for one of (fi ve) $1000 scholarships offered by Otter Co-op. We also have (one)
$1000 scholarship available for a mature student (an individual that has been out of high school for at least one year) with the same
qualifi cations. Applications are available at the Administration Offi ce or on our website www.ottercoop.com. Deadline for applications
is April 30, 2012 6:00 pm.

General Manager’s Message
Our 2011/12 fi scal year end has just taken place on
Saturday, March 3; and what a year it has been! Otter
Co-op is proud to announce that we have achieved
record sales, and although we are still fi nalizing bottom
line results, we are quite confi dent that it will also prove
to be a record year for bottom line savings. While
at the time of this writing we are still compiling our
yearend fi gures, we do know that our sales this past
year grew in excess of 21.5%, ending the year at $154,919,309 million. Our
last record was in 2010, with total sales of $127.5 million. That is a fantastic
accomplishment we can all be proud of.
I am privileged to be your general manager, and to be a part of such a
successful organization. Members, employees, and board of directors can
all be proud of the many accomplishments we have been able to make,
such as new facilities being opened, facility upgrades at current locations,
and expanded services and products throughout our organization. We are
also very proud of our Kid’s Club, the many social activities and events that
are put on by the Otter Co-op, and the scholarships and donations that we
participate in throughout the communities in which we serve that amount to
over $125,000 this past year. Wow, talk about your member benefi ts! And of
course we continue to have our very successful equity and cash back program
to members. Otter Co-op is well positioned to continue moving ahead into the
future, and we are excited to begin our new fi scal year and meet the challenges
that are ahead. None of these results could be possible without the continued
patronage and support of you, the shoppers at Otter Co-op. Remember to
mark your calendars for Thursday, May 31, the date of our Annual General
Meeting, where we will discuss in detail the past years’ results, you can learn
the work of the board of directors, socialize with other co-op members and
shoppers, and hear some of the exciting plans for the future. Until then, have a
safe spring season, and I look forward to seeing you at the Co-op!

President’s Message:
As we begin a new year in 2012, Otter Co-op is proud to be
celebrating 90 years of success in the Lower Mainland.
And what a great year to be celebrating this milestone, as the
United Nations has proclaimed 2012 to be the International
Year of Co-operatives. Our members can be proud of the rich
history of the Otter Co-op, and I encourage you to
take a few minutes and read all about it on our website at
www.ottercoop.com.
Our continued success is indeed a co-operative team
celebration. It can be credited to you, our loyal members purchasing goods and
services; both past and present. As well, the success is part of a great effort on our staff’s
part, in providing that great, friendly service that members have come to expect and
enjoy. And also credit to the management and board of past and present, in setting
goals and direction for the Co-ops’ success for years to come.
A couple of highlights that I am especially proud of when talking about Otter, is the fact
that all profi ts generated by the Co-op stay right here in our communities, as opposed
to going off to some head offi ce in Toronto or outside the country. Whether it be
profi ts allocated to members in equity and cash back, or to the new and upgraded
facilities we are able to invest in throughout the Lower Mainland, or to the literally
hundreds of groups and organizations that Otter provides scholarships, support, and
sponsorship of. Did you know that for many years Otter Co-op has donated well in
excess of $100,000 a year to the many different community groups that we serve?
This is so exciting to be a part of such a successful and community oriented company.
Other positives for me include the fact that Otter Co-op is such a diverse company,
with business opportunities in feed, food, hardware, petroleum, pharmacy, and car
washes. We also have a leased facility with Tim Horton’s. It is this diversifi cation that
positions us well for the future, and helps in “not keeping all your eggs in one basket”
in this challenging economic time. There is no doubt that Otter Co-op has a bright
future, and I am honored to be your president at the start of this anniversary year. I look
forward to seeing many of you at our annual meeting in May. Until then, we hope to
see you at the Co-op!

In August of 1999 Oscar the Otter arrived at Otter Co-op.
For many years the customers were greeted by Oscar at the entrance or the Kids' Club
members received a visit at their party's. It was quite comical to watch the look on the
children's and adults faces as they wondered where the voice was coming from. Was
there someone inside there? No, then how can they be asking me these questions or even sometimes know my
name? Oscar was great fun for many years. Since we now have our mascot “Cooper" and he is more mobile we thought we should fi nd a new home for Oscar where more people will get to enjoy him. You
will be happy to know he is not too far away as on Wednesday, February 29, 2012, he moved to the Vancouver Zoo in
Aldergrove. The staff at the zoo were very excited to have Oscar and will take great care of him there.

r
I am greeted with sheer amazement as I
think that there are just three months left
in this excursion that I had known so little
about this time of last year. Just last year I
had scoured the internet in search of the
history and meaning behind co-operative
organizations in preparation for my
application essay. Little was I to know, this
limited textbook knowledge would grow
so immensely as I would come witness to
the practical application of co-operative
values. I could never have imagined that
each third Thursday morning of each
month, I would still be digesting and
pondering all that had been said from the
prior night's meeting.
It is evident that when, in three months,
this journey comes to an end, I will be
far more prepared to enter the real world
than I ever could have been without
this opportunity. Perhaps, it is being
apart of such a successful organization
in a world of major corporations that
has had the greatest effect on me. It is
a prime example that when the efforts
of hardworking, caring individuals are
combined with a clear initiative and shared
morals, success is attainable. Tied within
this inspiration, I have acquired a great
deal of knowledge regarding the way
businesses function and the ins and outs of
retail. Not only have I learned to navigate
aisles and catalogues, recognizing the
specifi c placement of products, but also
the daunting spreadsheets splattered
with numbers.
With a quarter of my term remaining, I
look forward to making the most of it.
I will enjoy each meeting, each Co-op
fundraiser, and every greeting smile as
I step into the Co-op. These fi nal months
of my term will hold no hindrance to the
momentum of my learning. There is
still much to be experienced, much to
be enjoyed in being apart of this
incredible organization.
When the inevitable ending arrives, I know
I will crave the meetings, the structure,
and the idea fl ow of growing the Co-op
to its potential. Just a year ago I had been
set upon the career path of engineering.
At this point, I cannot see myself living
my life without eventually expanding into
the business side of things. Whether it is
entrepreneurial or sooner or later rejoining
the Co-op’s board of directors, the
awareness of the excitement of business
that this opportunity has granted will be a
relentless call that will eventually bring me
back to this unique world.
