In stark contrast, this modern brick home in the Summerwood neighborhood creates a sultry

setting for daring dressing. Stone and metal create the inspiration for the darker color pal-

ette, with pops of brightness. Bold and sharp, these looks are also based on the geometric

shapes and lines of this castle-like home. For spring, look for color blocking and hints of

contrasting color, such as sleek white shoes with a sharp mens suit. Minimal but powerful

accessories reect the personality of this home that makes a sleek, clean statement without

perfect opportunity to continually update a room as the

seasons and your personal tastes change. In fact, manyinterior designers prefer a neutral sofa. We wanted to tryit for ourselves and asked three design experts to join usin creating four dierent looks with one taupe Broyhillsofa ($999) provided by Howells Furniture. The results:A neutral sofa is the perfect way to showcase your indi-vidual personality.

    P

aula Blazek never gave muchthought to rugs when shehad wall-to-wall carpeting. That changed when Blazekand her husband, Joey,

purchased a 74-year-oldhouse with hardwood floors throughout. In pursuit of a complement to thehardwoods, they discovered the beautyof handmade rugs and now own a unique

    one for every room.

    Timeless Art

I think rugs bring so much life to aroom, as well as a richness and nish, saidKen Berryhill of Berryhill Designs, whohelped the Blazeks select their rug col-lection. They are beautiful, timeless andusually increase in value.

Paula Blazek agrees. I believe rugs

bring warmth to a room, she said.A tightly-knotted handmade rug can

take years to weave, said Arlene Hinkieof A&D Persian Rugs in Beaumont. Eachrug pattern can have symbols, gures and

stories woven into it, giving insight into thetime, place, purpose and artistic inuenceof the patterns creator. Thousands of rugpatterns exist, made in many dierentcountries, she said.

To me, handmade rugs are works of

art, like oil paintings, Hinkie said.

    Versatile and Durable

For a new decorating project, Berryhilllikes to start with a rug. I think a rug isone of the most important choices, hesaid. Having really nice furniture and thenchoosing a cheap rug can ruin the look ofthe room.

With the variety of options, selecting arug can be one of the hardest design choicesfor homeowners, Berryhill added. Becauserugs are both costly and durable, theselection may represent a lifetime commit-

ment. I say, Dont buy it unless you loveit. A rug is not something you are going tochange every time you change your dcor.Youre going to re-use this rug, then giveit to your kids because its still going to behere when youre gone.

Once a rug is chosen, other dcor itemscan be selected based on the dominantcolors of the rug, Berryhill explained. Oftenoriental rugs come in jewel tones, particu-larly reds and blues, but there are manyneutral styles available. Hinkie said thetone-on-tone patterns of the Oushak (alter-nately spelled Ushak) style of Turkish rugsare currently in hot demand. Oriental

rugs work as well with con-temporary or minimalist d-cor as they do with traditionalstyle, according to Berryhill.

With handmade rugs, notwo are exactly the same, which is good because adesign dont is to havematchy-matchy rugs. Younever want to use the samerug twice, Berryhill said. You want to use coordinatingrugs. In her home, Blazek

said that though each ruglooks very dierent in style, they coordinate well becauseof shared colors.

Unlike some show pieces, rugs are meant to be used.Hinkie explained that thenatural lanolin in the woolprovides a built-in stain repel-lent and the intricate patternsreduce signs of dirt or wear.Blazek said her rugs havewithstood party guests andfamily pets. Rugs are veryresilient, she said.

Investment SavvyThere is a huge range in

quality that drives the cost ofrugs, Hinkie said. Also, likejewelry, rugs have a high markup. Knowing and trustingyour dealer is important forgetting a fair price, she said.A large, handwoven rug cancost $3,000 to $7,000, withantique or collectible rugsoften much more.

Keys to price in orientalrugs are size, quality, age, condition, country of origin

and current trendiness factors. Most handwoven rugs arewool or silk or a combination. One assessment of qualityis the number of knots perinch, indicating how tightly orloosely the rug is woven. As ageneral rule, Hinkie said thatif the back of the rug is justas beautiful as the front, its agood product. Historically, thebest rugs came from Persia, but in recent years high-qual-ity handmade reproductionsof Persian patterns are made

    in several other countries,Hinkie explained.

    Handmade vs. MachineA more budget-friendly

option is a machine-maderug, which can still be a goodquality product if not a pieceof original art. Berryhill saidthat in his opinion, Karastanmakes the best machine-maderugs in America. However, his personal preference wouldalways be for the originals.Nothing replaces a handmaderug, he said. VIP

Whats in a name?Tabriz, Oushak, Serapi, Heriz, Sa-

rouk, Kazak and Mahal are all styles

of oriental rugs to list but a few.

Most rugs derive their name from

the village where the patterns were

    developed, primarily in Persia. The

    Persian Empire ranged over much

of Central Asia, including areas now

    known as Iran, Iraq,Afghanistan,

Pakistan, Armenia, Georgia andUzbekistan among others. Turkey,

India and China are also known for

    their rugs and patterns.

    EmbargoIn 2010, President Obama signed

an embargo on the import of

Iranian goods into the United States,

    including handmade rugs. Though

the inventory is still sufcient, the

embargo may drive the cost of

authentic Persian rugs up over time,

You dont have to dig up your backyard to enjoy a

beautiful blooming garden or a bountiful crop. Enjoy

your patio by planting flowers and vegetables in pots,

window boxes, baskets and any other container that

suits your fancy. Make the space comfortable with

ozy outdoor furnishings, add a touch of garden art, and youve got a

ittle oasis right outside your door.

    Contain your botanical enthusiasm

Chances are you already have a stash of garden pots, but its alwaysun to add to the collection. You can make a bold statement withrightly colored pots or go subtle and let the plants be the sole focus.

Dont limit yourself to conventional containers. Old cowboy boots, toyump trucks, teapots and birdbaths make eye-catching displays.

Kit Ohmstede with Down to Earth Landscaping in Beaumont recom-mends grouping your containers in odd numbers and varying heights.f oor space is tight, you can hang your little gardens in baskets. I

ike to use wire baskets with sphagnum moss, she said. An alternativeo moss is a coconut liner, which is a bit denser.

ardens and summer gardens arent theame. For example, pansies and broccolio better in cooler temperatures, whereasaisies and tomatoes thrive in warmer

weather. When choosing plants, be sure to

ead the information that comes with themegarding lighting and watering needs. Pick

herbs, owers and vegetables that will beompatible together if you want to put themn one container. Purchase some ller plantsuch as grasses too. And dont forget to buy a

    high-quality potting soil with time-releasednutrients.

Ohmstede likes to give her containershree heights of plants tall, medium andhort, which might be a trailing vine. Youont want it to be just one plant in a pot,he explained. You want it to be complex

and interesting. There are many combinations that work

well. Put a cucumber plant in a containerpaired with taller growing rosemary andplace it on a railing or wall, so the cucumber

vine can grow along it. Or place a trellis be-hind the pot and let the vine climb. Trelliseswork well for patio tomatoes too, and addsome basil to the container as well. Make anherb garden in a window box or large potthat includes sage, thyme and parsley.

Remember, you can mix herbs, vegetablesand owers in one container. Try plantinga small variety of lettuce with Thumbelinacarrots, chives and signet marigolds. Andwhen youve nished harvesting the cropfrom one plant, replace it with another thatwill work for the next season.

Even citrus trees can make attractivecontainer plants. The smaller members othe citrus family such as limes, lemons akumquats are the best choices. Make surplant the tree in a container large enough

give it room to grow, and put it in a spot gets lots of sunlight.

    An artistic touch

Although owering plants, herbs andvegetables are natures works of art, evergarden needs an artistic touch that showthe gardeners personality. Ceramic gardgnomes and woodland creatures, plastic amingoes, birdbaths, wind chimes, agplaques, fountains the possibilities arealmost endless. I think that its fun to hsomething fanciful in the garden, Ohms

aid.And dont forget some comfortable out-

oor furniture. Linda Anderson, manager ofEllis Home & Garden in Beaumont, recom-mends PVC furnishings. It looks identical

o wicker, she said, adding that its easy tolean and sturdy. Try a glider, a rocker or aistro set with a small table and two chairs.

Cushions will add more splashes of color. No babbling brook nearby? No problem.

mall water features add a soothing elemento a patio garden. How can you not have aountain? Anderson said. Its so relaxing.

Even little gardens can oer a largemount of peace and tranquility. Whenoure in your garden, youre a thousand

miles away, Ohmstede noted. Its veryherapeutic.

Going to potsContainer gardening is an easy way to get a lot of color, fragrance and produce in a small space.

Get growing on your little garden! Choose different colored and sized pots and containers to add variety to your garden.

If weight is an issue, choose plastic containers over ceramic or terra cotta. Or you can keep aheavier container in one place and move lighter, plastic ones in and out of it.

Hanging wire baskets lled with coconut liners or sphagnum moss are nice alternatives to plastibaskets.

Group different plants of varying heights in one pot to make the display more interesting. Bemindful of choosing plants that require the same amount of light and water.

If you plant a climbing vine, make sure you provide it with support such as a trellis. Or you canplant it in a hanging basket and let it grow down.

Buy a high-quality potting soil with time-released nutrients.

Plant according to the season for the best results.

Karen McCormick was a young teen inthe 1960s when her father, Dr. GeorgeCampbell, secured the services of

    A. Hays Town to design their home. ForTown to build a house for you, you had tohave some connection with him I thinkmy mother went to school with his daughtern New Orleans, McCormick remembered. He had to like you. He was so hands-onhat he would become part of the family. My

dad was a doctor, but his rst degree was in

engineering. He and Hays Town hit it oreally well.

McCormick remembers her father goingwith Town to the demolition yards in NewOrleans to search for salvaged materials fortheir home. Town loved to use reclaimedbricks, beams, planks and brass work, notfor economic or environmental reasons, butfor the rich history they oered. Throughthese materials, he was able to give a vintagepatina to a brand new home, giving it the ap-

pearance of timelessness. If he couldnt get it old, he made it lo

old, McCormick said. She remembers thTown made up a formula with buttermilkthat he applied to a piece of statuary in thcourtyard to make algae grow to age the ish.

Not everyone appreciates this shabbychic antique look, but McCormick lovesI love every nick and crevice, she said. pointed to one of her doors as an example

Thats the history of that door. Theres aeason it looks like that. It gives the househaracter and warmth.

Another example is the ooring, maderom extra-wide, heart-of-pine boards. Theoards vary in size and its this lack of sym-

metry that appeals to McCormick. McCor-mick and her husband, Paul, have deep tieso Louisiana. They were newlyweds whenhey inherited the house and 25 years later, hey still love it. We feel very much at home

here, McCormick said. The features McCormick most appreciates

are the oor-to-ceiling windows that look outon the gardens. (Town adamantly believedthat every window should have a view, thatthe outside and inside should harmonize.)She also appreciates the rhythm and owof the house and the outside porches. Townacknowledged the hot Southern climate bybuilding accordingly to allow maximumbreezes and shade to keep houses comfort-

able. I would put my house up againstany house its size for energy eciency evthough it isnt sealed, she said.

Considered as a whole, McCormick sathere isnt any one wow thing, but raththe collection of elements the detailedmoulding, the solid wood doors, the re-claimed door knobs and architectural pienow scarce that make the home distinctive. I dont think you could reproduce thouse, she said. >>

When Todd and Crissy Clarkedecided to build a home in 2006,they looked at a variety of archi-

ectural styles, but hired Al Jones, Townsrotg from Baton Rouge. I kept comingack to the way the Town/Jones houses feltn the inside, Crissy Clarke said, with the

heavy beams, the arches, the windows to the

round, the 12-inch baseboards and 12-inch-wide planks, the beeswax stains on thericks. Though all those details spoke to

her, she also wanted modern conveniences. We told them we wanted authentic, but

    with walk-in closets.

Clarke kept a record of where the sal-vaged materials used in their home camefrom and she recalled how constructionwould sometimes come to a halt while wait-ing for a building to be torn down some-where.

Unlike Towns era, salvaged materials areharder and costlier to come by, and come

from further aeld than Louisiana. In theClarkes home, the exterior brick came froman old Albertsons grocery in New Orleans, the living room wooden beams came fromAsheville, N.C., the kitchen beams fromShreveport, La., and the tan interior bricks

from Ponchatoula, La.The hardwood ooring is 200 years

old, brought from Maryland to the Clarkhouse. Clarke described how each pieceto be cut to t and looked awful until Joncustom staining expert nished them. Thgas lamps were custom made by a compain the French Quarter of New Orleans an

the door hardware was special ordered fra company in the Garden District. Theseexceptional details are what make the hounique, but, unsurprisingly, cost quite a more than typical xtures.

with only a few deviations. For example,he chose a lighter, Country French-stylehandelier for the dining room rather thanhe heavier, traditional golden ones favoredy Town and Jones.

Rachel Roane adored the Clarkes house.Roane and her husband, Steven, also hired

ones when they built their Beaumont home.

However, the Roanes made many moreeviations from the authentic style, oftenor practical purposes such as maintenancer cost. For example, they elected to haveile rather than brick on the kitchen oorecause brick oors require a second pour of

concrete on the slab, a serious price factor, and also a matter of personal taste.

An unseen aspect is the better-than-codeconstruction and quality materials that gointo the structure of these houses, Roaneexplained. These houses have great bones, great ingredients that go into them, shesaid.

Unfortunately, they are very expensive. When Town rst started doing this, cypresswas readily available, brick was readilyavailable. They found old bridges that wererotting for the exposed beams and ooringcame from old warehouses in New Orleans.

Now the cost for these materials is outrageous because, as with anything old, a lopeople are interested in them.

Clarke concurs about the quality ofconstruction. If all the other houses intown were knocked down by a hurricanethis house would still be standing, shesaid. Though she may not understand th

intricacies of all the construction details, clearly appreciates the artistic features. can just feel it; you can just tell, she saidThe windows, the light, the beams andbricks, the natural things Im never tireit or itch for a dierent style. >>

Architect Al Jones studied underA. Hays Town for eight years beforegoing out on his own in the early1970s. He absorbed Towns styleand adapted it over the years asmaterials, building codes andlifestyles changed.

Jones considered Town a mentor,a father gure and a friend. Mr.

Town was a purist; he was brilliant,Jones said.

One of the essential character-istics of a Town or a Jones home isnot something you can immediatelypoint to unless you are trained torecognize it proportional design. If you walk into a room andsomething jumps out at you holysmokes! thats not our goal,Jones said. With good proportion, good scale, the more you look at it,the more you like it. Its the materi-

als, but also putting them togetherproperly to be well-designed.Though in many ways Jones has

had to be exible as times changed such as efciency codes affectingthe options for windows he is stillable to locate salvaged materials, though admits it is more challeng-ing. We still nd a lot of heartpinebeam and ooring, he said.Withbricks, we used to fuss when theywere 30 cents apiece and now wepay about $1.37 apiece. Bothscarcity and competition are driving

up the price, he said.Whats exciing about old bricks is that everytime you unload them, youll ndone with a thumbprint or sometima date scratched in one.

Jones remembered that theyused about 60,000 bricks on theClarke home. Town and Jones botused brick in the kitchens for the

oors, walls and hearths. Jonesexplained that this came from theold practical reason that kitchenstended to burn down. Kitchensused to be separate from the mainhouse for this reason. Brick isntneeded for reproong in the modern era kitchen, but it harkens tothe aesthetic of previous centuries

Another adaptation to lifestyles isthat the kitchens used to be walledoff in Towns day, but now peopleprefer an open plan as the kitchen

has become the heart of the homeJones explained.Jones emphasizes extra-wide

porch galleries, big windows providing lots of natural light, and gardenwith brick walks, planters andcourtyards. Also, he rmly believesa house should be attractive fromall views. Houses are like peoplehe said. You dont have just a fac

You have sides and a rear. The froof the house needs to be invitingand charming, but the sides andrear are equally important.

    The two

    quaint,brick homes

    situated side

    by side in

    Beaumonts

    Old Town

give no clue as to what goes on inside.

One has a room filled with computers,

    printers, boxes of specialty papers

and a drafting table. The other has

an addition in the back dedicated to

    sewing and monogramming machines,

work tables and art supplies. These

are the offices of K & K designs and

also the homes of Kathryn Bachelot

    and her mother, Kay Clark.

A home-based businessBachelot was already a busy interior

designer when she and her motherstarted K & K designs in 2007 with the

purchase of a monogramming machine. It was just a home-based business thatgave us a little extra to do, Bachelot,a member of the American Society ofInterior Designers, said. Incorporatedin 2010, the partners in the rm areBachelot, Clark, Bachelots daughter,Lauren Martin, and Carmen de losReyes.

For interior design, Bachelots nicheis moderate to high-end residentialand soft commercial projects such asbusiness oces. The main aspects ofan interior designers job include space

planning, color consultation, furnitureand accessory choices and window

treatments. Her overall goal is to pushher clients a little further than theywould push themselves to achieve awonderful look. And I keep you frommaking mistakes, she added.

A natural knack for designGrowing up in Lake Charles, La.,

Bachelot realized she was good at inte-rior design early on. Her mother let hermake over her room every summer, aslong as she did the work. They wouldgo to a fabric store and pick out mate-rial for new curtains, and she wouldsew them. She could repaint walls or

hang wallpaper, whatever she liked. She wanted things just so, Clark said, noting that her daughter had a naturalknack for design.

In high school, she decided shewanted to become an interior designerand after graduation headed for Loui-siana Tech University for a bachelor ofne arts in interior design. She remem-bers a favorite professor who taughtcolor theory. Color is my biggeststrength, she said. Its very logical tome now. Color aects everything.

Even if youre making over yourhome on a budget and dont want to

hire an interior designer, Bachelot rec-ommends at least hiring a professionalfor color selection. Never ask someoneelse for their paint color, she warns. It wont look the same in your houseas it does in your friends house. Shebemoans the fact that most people playit too safe, too simple and too neutralwhen changing their abodes. Takesome risk, she advises. Go with morecontrast, but it has to have some kindof continuity. It has to relate to otherareas. When she starts on a project, shethinks of the house as a whole. I try to

imagine the house with no walls, sheexplained. She wants the design ele-

ments to ow from room to room.Bachelots personal tastes lean to-

ward traditional. She likes older homesfor their architectural features. I likemore traditional aspects, she said. Ilike antiques. I love good rugs.

Here for the partyIn 2005, the interior designer

expanded her services to include eventplanning when she started workingon a convention for the Texas Districtof Pilot International a worldwideservice organization of which she is amember. The convention was held in

2007 at the MCM Elegante in Beau-mont. Since then, shes helped organizeseveral more conventions. Shes alsobecome popular as a wedding planner, especially since her rm can design andprint the save-the-date cards and wed-ding invitations, decorate the venueand make other specialty items suchas banners, ags and guest books. Wedesign for the bride, Bachelot said.Nothing we do is stock. We all havestrength in design.

And they are open to all kinds ofideas. We had a bride who didntwant owers, Clark said. She wanted

feathers. I thought it was very interest-ing. The team came up with whiteostrich feathers arranged in large vasesilluminated by pink lights. It made abig impression, she recalled.

Bachelot is an avid collector of an-tique silver and vintage items includingcrystal, glass bottles and lanterns. Shewill incorporate these elements intoan event if it works with the theme. Her interior design and event planningclients are mostly from Beaumont, butshe has some clients around the stateand also in Lake Charles where she

had a design shop for several years. We do travel, Bachelot said, notingthat she recently planned a weddingat Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

The most important aspects ofa successful event are planning, communication between all parties

(no surprises) and good design,Bachelot explained. Shes very mind-ful of the bottom line. Im the badguy, she said. I stick to the budget. We want them to feel that they got agood value.

    No excuses

Does she enjoy attending wed-dings, parties and other events evenif she didnt plan them? Or doesshe spend her time critiquing? Ineverything I do in life, I critique,Bachelot said. But she wont give herdetailed opinion to her host or host-

ess. That doesnt mean she thinksshe can always do better. She takesplenty of ideas home with her to trywith her own events. We appreci-ate good design whether we did it ornot, she said.

    Bachelot describes her character

traits as headstrong andvery denitive. I aman A-type personal-ity plus, she said.Shes also somewhatof a workaholic, whichcomes with the terri-

tory when you workout of your house. Shetypically works 60 hours aweek. Shes very focused,de los Reyes said. Its not herway or the highway, but she isintense. Bachelots mother agrees.Shes very optimistic and acceptsno excuses, Clark said, adding thather daughter doesnt like to hear thatsomething cant be done.

    Work equals fun

If Bachelot threw herself a party, shed make sure to showcase her

collections of antique furniture andbooks, vintage linens and silver. Iwouldnt limit the colors, she said. And if she could be invited to anyevent in the world, she would wantto attend a European royal wedding, preferably at the couples centuries-

old estate. I love the history, shenoted.

For fun, Bachelot travels toantiques stores and ea markets andenjoys looking for the next great nd

that can be used for an event. Shetakes in her surroundings wherevershe goes, gleaning ideas from otherpeoples examples of good design.

But doesnt she ever want to turnit o, get away from her work? No,she replied. I never turn it o.

    share their own breakfast.

For the next couple of hours, they saddle up and

ride across deep green pasture shaded by matureoaks. After lunch, Sean works on a project, mend-ing fence boards or building a shelter for the horses.

As dusk falls, they sit and share a glass of icedtea, tired, but content with a day spent on the ranchthey love.

The McNelises dont have to imagine such a life. They live it. As a Realtor with Coldwell Banker inBeaumont, Diane helps others nd the ranch oftheir dreams.

Ranch clients have a dierent set of priorities.

They measure the value of a property in acres, nsquare footage, and are more concerned with luspastures, barns, mature shade trees and fencingthan the number of bedrooms, a designer kitcheor swimming pool though great ranches can hit all.

Each ranch is unique and each prospectivebuyer has a unique set of standards that must bemet. Often my ranch clients are as concerned abthe land as they are the house. You can change ahouse but you cant change the quality of the prerty, Diane says. Grazing space and good qualpasture are top components in most ranch propeties. It gets hot here and good shade trees are a rplus for animals. Outbuildings and barns can rafrom simple sheds to elaborate structures as fanas some homes in the area.

Many people might dismiss traditional Irishuisine as bland. But more astute observers willee it for what it really is: hearty, avorful, satis-ying and basic enough to let the foods natural

    ingredients and tastes.

It might be a refreshing change for some people, from the more chef-oriented recipes you see in maga-zines today, he added. I mean, you take a look atsome of the those lists of ingredients and you think,What in the heck?

In the hands of an Irish cook, even seafood likemeat is likely to be poached or boiled with just someonions and peppercorns, to allow the natural avor ofthe sh to take center stage.

MacKenzie isnt a full-blooded Irishman. In fact,he grew up in small shing village in Nova Scotia. Hisheritage is a mix of English, Dutch, Irish and Scottish.

But when he opened the pub 13 years ago, it quicklybecame known as THE Irish pub in Southeast Texas. The green in the dcor, the clover lights around the

dance oor and the owners last name were the startof it. And MacKenzies all-out approach to celebrat-ing St. Patricks Day Irish food and music and othersemi-live entertainment (aka Chuck MacKenzie tell-ing Irish jokes) cemented it. (Check out the recipefor MacKenzies famous corned beef and cabbage here, and look for it to be served at the pub on March 17.)

The St. Pats celebration at MacKenzies is sopopular, in fact, that it was nearly sold out as of lateJanuary this year.

Its one time of year I wish I had three times thenumber of chairs, MacKenzie said. I never plannedto promote it as an Irish pub, but I did like the termi-nology of pub, being from Canada. [Our customers]tagged me an Irish pub, and I wear the tag proudly.

Although the owner hails from Nova Scotia, MacKenzies Pubin Beaumont is known as THE Irish pub of Southeast Texas. The St. Patricks Day celebration at MacKenzies is so popularit was sold out a month in advance.

    If people went to, say,

France and ate a lot fancy

    sauces and fancy

    desserts, and then their

    next stop was Ireland, it

would be a culture shock. The food is just as good,

    and probably some of it

is better. Its just not the

    cuisine that people rave

    about. Its just good.
