John Marshall High School | March 2013 CNH Key Club

Region 7 Division 3 South

Introduction

Hello Marshall Key Club! On behalf of

the new board, I can say that we are all

ready to serve you for the 2013-2014

Key Club term and can’t wait to see what

the year will hold in store for us. Already

in March, we’re starting the new Key Club

year with many new fun service events

like Marathon Kids, and volunteering

for Matt Szabo’s campaign for the March

election. Franklinpalooza enabled us to

reach out to our community and assist

them in their annual festival of food and

fun. We’re off the ground running fresh

out of DCON with our new board ready

for SERVICE! As the new term begins, I

encourage everyone to actively

participate in the plethora of events

we have in store for you and look forward

to recording the year’s endeavors.

Marathon Kids: The Final Mile

Marathon Kids is an non-profit organization

committed to improving the health of children

by providing motivation to keep an active

lifestyle. I heard about this organization from

the usual monthly volunteer work search, and

thought it was a great opportunity to explore

a new part of Los Angeles and raise

awareness of maintaining a healthy body.

Unfortunately, only one person decided to

help me, Zhitong, but I am glad to have

experienced this with her. During the Final

Mile at Exposition Park, I encountered a

stadium of young people, energized and

eager in learning new ways to

exercise, listening about inspirational life

stories, and influencing others to do the

same, to keep moving. Of the several tasks

available throughout the event, I had the job

of cheering for the young runners, shouting,

"You can do it!" or "One mile left!" Reaching

my hand and giving the children high-fives

left me in pure bliss, I believe this was our

greatest interactive duty. The most rewarding

sight of this event was watching the children

race one another to pass the finish line. Their

face was filled with glee as they thought

about finally completing the 26.2 miles they

accumulated in a three month period. I could

never imagine myself committing to a run as

lengthy as that!

After deciding to follow the final group to

finish the mile, I found each child

beaming in accomplishment as they

received their medal. Of course, there

was another happening that day as well,

the "Run or Dye" marathon, but I

definitely believe this was much more

worthwhile, especially after taking a

lesson that I can apply to my own

lifestyle. Marathon Kids is a spectacular

method in teaching the younger

generation to get moving. Rather than

committing time to technology,

television, and video games, taking a

walk or run will always prove as a better

alternative.

Matt Szabo Campaign

During the month of February and the beginning of

March, many students from our school had the

opportunity to volunteer for a candidate running for

City Council District 13. I, luckily, was able to help out

Matt Szabo’s campaign and encouraged people in

my community to use their voice in the election on

March 5. At first I helped out because I wanted to get

out of doing a project in one of my classes, but the

more time I spent around local politics, I saw myself

dedicated to the cause. I became a student who

wanted her voice heard and wanted to make a

difference in her community. Coming to a supporter's

home after a long day of school to spend another 4

hours working, doesn’t seem that appealing to

students, but it was well worth it. We spent those 4

hours per day, 3 times a week for 1 month, making

phone calls encouraging people to vote for Matt

Szabo and writing addresses on letters that were going

to be mailed out to my neighbors, telling them how

amazing the candidate was. It was a great learning

experience because I figured out how to take

rejection really well and how to educate people on a

certain cause. It also had a really friendly environment

and good food. Overall, I’m really glad I volunteered

because I learned so much that I will take with me as I

grow as a person.

-Cynthia Wong

The members of John Marshall Key

Club had the exciting opportunity to

volunteer to help Matt Szabo in his race

to be elected into our City Council

District 13. With chances to help out

after school and on the weekends, it

offered invaluable experience into the

world of politics and provided many

with the knowledge working a telephone

and a team-oriented environment. We

were all more than happy to assist a

community leader in his endeavor to

join the City Council!

LA Marathon

Franklinpalooza

I experienced a lot of things at the L.A.

Marathon 2013 key club event. My friends and

I were given bright orange shirts and metals

that were just beautiful. Our group was

assigned to pass out metals along with other

key clubbers at the finish line which was really

cool, because I was able to award runners

after they completed the marathon. There

was also much diversity amongst the runners;

from old to young, and adults to children from

different backgrounds. I even saw some

runners cry as they finished, and I was instantly

touched and moved because I saw how

happy they were. I cheered and

congratulated so many people, and I thought

for a while, if they can do something this

challenging, so can I. Some runners hugged

me and thanked me for volunteering, and

also said that volunteers are what help a

community become better. Along the way I

met and talked to new people, made new

friends, and of course, new memories. I felt like

I stepped outside my comfort zone, and put

myself out there, even if it was only for a few

hours. I'm honestly glad I volunteered because

my perspective of things has changed. For

example, donating a few hours of my time

gave me a lifetime of unforgettable memories.

This event, in my opinion, was one of the best

I've ever done, because I enjoyed so many

exciting and new things while serving my

community.

Franklinpalooza

I was happy to volunteer at Franklin

Elementary for their “Franklinpalooza.” I was

actually nervous at first because I didn't

know who was going, but that didn't stop

me from volunteering. When I went there I

was kind of lost, but then I met two new

people and they helped me. One of them

was this nice woman and she told me how

she used to go to John Marshall. She was

really nice. Anyways, our job was to tell

them how much the desserts cost and

they'd pay us tickets. At first, it was going

slow and not that many people would

come and get desserts. But later towards

the end so many people came and

everyone was talking all at once and we

had to serve so many people. We were so

busy that I even got my friend who wasn't

even in key club to help. Even though we

were really busy we had fun. It should've

ended at 6:30 but there were still a lot of

people. They told us we could leave, but we

chose to stay instead. When it finally ended

we helped them clean up. It was a really

great experience. They were so grateful that

we stayed and help that they gave us a lot

of food before we left. I'm happy I got to

volunteer. I met a lot of nice people and I

hope to do this again.

-Michelle Simbajon

Franklinpalooza was a grand

experience among many of the great

key club events I participated in this

year. My role in this event was to sell

desserts donated by the many families

of Franklin Avenue Elementary hoping

to raise funds this beautiful school. It

was such a sweet treat, seeing the

shining faces and beaming smiles of

children as I gave them their

cupcakes, brownies, or anything else

their hearts (or stomachs) desired.

Although it wasn't easy, keeping up

with the quick demands of the little

children, I knew it was worth all the

while when I received the

heartwarming "thanks" from the other

adult volunteers in preparation for my

departure from the school. I'll never

forget the glowing smiles of the kids or

the kindness of the adults in this truly

special event.

Member of the

Month

Khoa Tran

John Marshall Key Club is proud to say that Khoa Tran is a new wolf in our ohana! Khoa attended one or two events in the beginning of the year, but for the month of March, he began to be an active member of our Key Club. When volunteering for the Chinatown Firecracker 10K, Ivanhoe Elementary's Book Fair, Franklin Elementary's Franklinpalooza, and the recent March DCM and Marshall Social, he became more and more interested in Key Club and what it really is. He is extremely lucky to have started Key Club and serving the community as a freshman! This wolf will surely make a lasting impact in our community in his next three years of Key Club!

Officer of the

Month

Ernestine Hong

Junior Class Representative

Finally, for our first club social, she led a

team to establish the event at Griffith

Park, even setting a team to provide

food for the day. Her famous

lemonade won everyone’s approval.

Ernestine is a spectacular individual to

work with, and we hope that her skills

and orderliness will impact others to

work as hard as her. We are proud to

have her on our board.

-Written by Marian Montano

John Marshall Key Club would like to

honor Ernestine Hong as Officer of the

Month for March. We have just started

out term and Ernestine has already

taken initiative in organizing the

month’s events, including the

Marathon Kids Final Mile,

Franklinpalooza, and the LA

Marathon. This March, she

volunteered for the Los Angeles

Marathon, cheering on runners,

helping provide refreshments, and

handing out medals at the end of the

run. She is committed in completing

her work to the fullest and is always

eager to give a hand to any officer

who needs help in forming the event,

as well as advertise for members to

attend. Furthermore, she dedicated

her time in assisting Chantal Mendoza,

our IP Historian, to complete a

scrapbook for the 2012 – 2013 term.
