Dear Patrons, Donors, Volunteers and Sponsors,
Welcome to 2016 and thank you for the support you have given to the Food Bank this past year. With each newsle er, we talk about the expanding programs and the in-‐crease in par cipants that we are suppor ng here at the food bank. The message con n-‐
ues as we see more families in need of help and when we compare previous year’s volumes of food distributed and numbers of folks helped, the numbers con nue to be larger. All of you know that the Buffalo Chip had an unfortunate event which resulted in loss of jobs right at Christmas me. We were able to add some of those folks to our Christmas “Adopt a Family” program and the Local Fire Department helped us supply gi s for the children of the employees of the Chip. We also received money from local resi-‐dents in the area and we forwarded the funds to the Chip employees under the direc on of Larry Wendt. Thanks again to all of the folks in the Foot Hills area that stepped up to help those who were affected by this tragedy. We are moving forward with our building expansion. Plans have been submi ed to the city of Cave Creek and we will start construc-‐on a er the City has approved our plans. We are fortunate to have
leaders at the city who have met with us and given us guidance to move forward. Our funding for this project is driven from a grant and from the ini a on of a Capital Building Campaign. We are striving to have all of the funds required before comple ng the construc on. Your con nued support allows us to help thousands of individuals throughout each year. THANK YOU for helping us to help others. Sincerely,
Board President Chuck Weirauch

Dear Food Bank Supporters, We have quieted down a li le since the busy holiday sea-‐son of 2015. It is the lull before the storm. We will soon be breaking ground for our 2,000 square foot addi on. We have not even been in the building 3 years and already it has become necessary to put on an addi on.
There are several things that impact this decision : The first is that we desperately need more storage space, especially refrigera on. The second is that we are helping clients to receive more services (SNAP,
AHCCCS, DES U lity Assistance and other resources) and need more office space.
The third is that we would like to bring our Snack Pack Program in-house. We are ren ng space in order to fulfill this much needed program.
We are well on our way to reaching our es mated cost of this addi on. We applied for and received a $150,000 grant from Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust to be used toward the cost. Also, sadly Fr. Herb Hauck, who was instrumental in our receiving a $300,000 gi that paid off our mortgage, passed away and he requested that dona-‐ons be made to the building fund in his memory. We received in Fr. Herb’s memory
$64,940. Addi onal dona ons to the Capital Campaign amount to $32,905, bringing the total to $247,845 of the es mated $400,000 needed. Elsewhere in this news-‐le er is more informa on about the Capital Campaign. Thank you, again, for a very prosperous 2015 and please con nue to support those in need in 2016. Sincerely, Execu ve Director Pam DiPietro

on January 22nd. The theme was a Teddy Bear Picnic. Co-chairs Terry Krivoruchka, Amber Buckman and Angie Dietrick are very grateful to their commi ee and to all of the Mirabel ladies (and men) who made this year's event a huge success!
Robin Kilbane—Asset to the Food Bank
Robin joined the Food Bank in November, 2015. She is our Resource and Educa on Coordi-‐nator. Along with a degree in Psychology, Robin comes with a mul tude of experience that has taken her in many direc ons. All that are helpful for her new role at the Food Bank. The most important one is that she has excellent people-skills and empathy for others. She recently helped a Veteran that needed surgery, but was having trouble ge ng through the system. She kept working with him as his support system un l he finally received the much needed surgery. Here is Robin’s personal take on what she does: My job as Resource and Educa on Coordinator has been evolving in many new direc ons as I get to know the needs of our clients. My goal is to provide as many resources that I can find to help move people forward in their lives and out of the cycle. I have been so fortunate to work with and be mentored by Suzanne Hyde LCSW, the social worker for Neighbors in Need AZ. Together we have been working to bring a mobile medical unit to the food bank monthly to provide medical services and checkups, working with local employers to train and recruit in our area, and star ng rela onships with shelters to help with our homeless popula on. The Foothills Caring Corps, St. Vincent de Paul, Desert Foothills YMCA, Salva on Army and Mar al Adam Stein have also been a tremendous help to me. I am so thankful to be working with such dedicated people and organiza ons. We have a wonderful caring community.

The year 2015 was a very challenging, yet produc ve one for the Food Bank and the communi es we serve. Thanks to the extremely generous contribu ons from our food resource partners and you, the members of the community, we not only met the growing needs of our clients for food and other resources, but were able to con nue to sustain our infrastructure to meet these demands. During the past year, we sa sfied the needs of our client base, which grew about 20% because of your generosity. In addi-‐on, a donor purchased a new refrigerated van for the transporta on of food and materials from contribu ng local grocery
stores to our facility. Also, because of you, our donors, we purchased land for parking facili es adjacent to our building to expand our limited parking spaces, and replaced refrigera on units in our exis ng structure. All of these ac vi es were paid with exis ng funds and your 2015 contribu ons. In addi on, we started a Capital Campaign in 2015 to fund the expansion of our facility to meet our growing needs. The num-‐bers we serve within our boundaries con nues to grow, and it has become necessary to expand. The expansion of 2,000 square feet will accommodate the purchase of more refrigera on units (desperately required to properly store perishable foodstuffs), general storage area, client wai ng and packing areas, and other general purposes. The approximate cost of this expansion (including equipment) should not exceed $400,000. We are grateful to the contributors who have helped us get started on funding the facili es expansion and believe we can complete this project in 2016 without incurring any long-term debt. This can only be accomplished while we sustain con nu-‐ing opera ons to meet the needs of our community. YOUR CONTINUING CONTRIBUTIONS WILL ALLOW US TO MEET OUR AMBITIOUS GOALS AND SUSTAIN THE FINANCIAL STRENGTH OF THE FOOD BANK. Within this newsle er you will see a review of our financial performance for the past two years that will assist you in ge ng a heightened perspec ve of the ac vi es of the Food Bank for the past two years. The second is a financial request form for your con nuing support of our ac vi es. As always, any contribu on is gratefully appreciated, tax-deduc ble and may qualify for an Arizona Tax Credit. Please contact our office at (480)488-1145, should you need further informa on concerning the Food Bank, its ac vi es or related contribu on informa on.

Adopt -A- Family Makes for Happy Holidays
Our 13th Annual Adopt-a-Family program concluded on December 24th, 2015. On behalf of the Foothills Food Bank we’d like to extend our sincere gra tude to our donors and volunteers that helped make this our most successful event yet. Through your generosity, we provided 377 families with gi cards, items of need and toys to those who are less fortunate in our sur-‐rounding Foothills communi es. We offered three ways to serve families this year. Our first event was held in Black Canyon City on Saturday, Dec. 12th where over 70 families from the north valley were served. Our second event was held at Holland Center in Sco sdale on Sunday, Dec. 13th where 100 families came in to pick up their gi s. Lunch boxes were provided and Santa was present along with a generous toy give-away provided by the Rural Metro Fire Department. Our third op on for families to receive gi s was direct delivery by their donors. This provided an opportunity for each party to meet one another. The Foothills Food Bank also provided gi cards and toys to registered clients who missed our events. Addi onally, we had a unique opportunity to serve employees who were affected by the Buffalo Chips fire and suddenly had no income.
Together, with the help of 160 donors (churches, schools, clubs and individuals) and 30+ volunteers, the compassion shown for the less fortunate was evident and greatly appreciated. Special thanks to our event center hosts Chris Winger and Nicole Seagren of the Foothills Community Founda on, to Jean Johnson of the Salva on Army and High Desert Helpers in Black Can-‐yon City and to our Co-Chairs, Jeannine Di oe & Nancy Keller for their organiza on and countless hours spent on this important project.
Many expressed their gra tude and here are just a couple of notes. (Names have been withheld.)
“To the People at Foothills Food Bank, I want to tell you that you have made a huge difference in our lives! We are ea ng good home cooked meals because of your efforts and food. We were given a really nice cookware set for Christmas and we are so very thankful for it. We appreciate all that you do for us and our community! From our hearts we thank you. May God Bless you all. Merry Christmas.“
“Dearest Foothills Food Bank Staff and Volunteers, Happy New and I pray that each of you all had a blessed and wonderful holiday season because you certainly ALL deserved it! Your stockings brought smiles to my children’s faces and the candy is s ll being enjoyed. We used the candy canes to deco-‐rate our tree because somewhere during our move the tree decora ons were lost. Hopefully I’ll find them just in me for Easter. That’s life as a single parent to 6 beau ful and precious children. I say you’re amazing because when I first opted to move here and give my kids a healthy way of life as a single parent, that scared me. How will I fare, alone with 6? But God is also amazing! He connected me to all of you and what a blessing you have been. Then a wonderful donor gave us those amazing and personalized gi bags and I cried with joy, because of his gen-‐erous gi , my kids had a phenomenal Christmas. They thought he was an elf, and he was gracious enough to go along with it. God bless him and his en re family as he blessed us as his adopted Christmas family. Lastly, that party at the Holland Center was superb. It put the icing on the wonders of Santa for my 6, 7, 8, 8, 10 and 12 year olds. Again, may God bless all of you. I am so grateful to all of you beau ful people. You have truly helped my family grow and thrive through your endless giving. “

Pets Important for Client Families—Help Us Help Them, Too
Remember the saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away?" How about playing with your pet each day? Those of us with pets understand the proven health benefits of having a pet in the family, including physical, mental and emo onal well-being. For clients who have pets in their lives, we have been providing cri cal vaccina ons which support them in main-‐taining a safe and healthy home. Over the past two years, through the generous support of Veterinary Centers of America, over 200 pets have received vaccina ons. We want to do more and are striving to bring a mobile spay and neuter clinic to the Food Bank site to provide addi onal services to our clients’ pets. When we have raised $2500, we can schedule the clinic. One day on-site will result in 40 pets being spayed or neutered. Your dona ons can be directed to Foothills Food Bank, PO Box 715, Carefree, AZ 85377. Please note in the check memo that it is for the Spay and Neuter Clinic. Your dona-‐on is tax deduc ble. Thank you.

The Young Show Compassion Early Recently 3 young boys, Cole, Jackson and Wesley brought in food from a food drive that they had taken on by themselves. They canvassed their neighborhood asking neighbors to do-‐nate food for a food drive they were organizing. They are showing compassion for others at a very young age.
And yet another… Sarah is 8 years old and her sister Juliana is 11. They have done many projects like lemonade stands and puppet shows to raise food and/or money for the Foot-‐hills Food Bank. They have been doing this for the past several years. Their Grandmother stated, “It encourages them to con nue to show compassion for others
and hopefully that will con nue throughout their lives.” We agree. At a very young age these children know it is important to help the less fortunate. Kudos!
