Hillel says: Do not separate yourself from the community.
Pirkei Avot 2:4
As the Talmud explains, the one who separates from the
ways of the community leaves society. And Hillel says that
society is the main thing and not the private individual, for the individual is
dynamic/changing, and these societies endure, as has been explained, for
societal power endures without change.
This may sound radical to modern ears which prize the individual above all
else, but there really is no conflict. Judaism recognizes and cherishes the
unique journey of each soul in this world. For each person, that is paramount.
However, that journey can only be fully expressed in relationship with others,
that is, within society. Moreover, it is society that will continue to be manifest
in this world having influenced and been influenced by all the people who have
lived through it. The individual will, one day, leave this life behind. It is only in
society that their existence will continue to be felt.
Our renewed bulletin effort will give you more chances to be a part of our
community. To dance together, to eat together, to learn together, to pray
together, to argue together, to LIVE together. We will all be blessed and will all
bless others. Explore these pages and see in each event, notice or shared
comment a doorway into our shared Temple Israel life.
L’Shalom

From the President
Dear Congregants, Family, and Friends- Please accept my thanks for the opportunity to lead and serve our Congregation. Your trust continues to be a major energy source to my day. We all have our challenges but, as a team, we are accomplishing many goals and then some.
In January, we were entertained by Tizmoret, the singing A Cappella troupe from Queens College Hillel . It was heartwarming to hear their sounds and share in their enthusiasm for our religion. They travel around the South during Winter months and have promised to come back. Look for our posts; Tizmoret will enlighten your spirits and hope to sell you some CDs. Your Board of Trustees are to be commended for their actions to set our Congregation on the path to our goals. They have pledged to keep our interests and concerns on the front burners of our ever cooking stove of chores. And speaking of stoves, the kitchen crew, led by Carol Albert and Lauren Brown, keep us energized for all of the events we so enjoy. Please take the time to thank them and please make the time to volunteer to assist them in their kosher activities. Our Programming in Adult Education is really humming along with Natan Brener's best efforts including this month's Tu B'Shevat observance and the Rabbi's classes in communica-tion skills for those with differing views to remain civil. We enjoy the debate and allow our viewpoints to be heard with respect and tolerance. Expect more programming from Laurence Morrell and Dr. Harry Rein, particularly for Seniors and better communications. It will be a great quarter for our congregation. Our MAGAL team are busy building our community with young, proud Jewish students. They build harmony in prayer, song, and understanding. Our classes are growing and the spirit they share is heartwarming. Be sure to attend one of their Friday night Shabbatot. Membership is planning dinners for you to enjoy. We will have opportunities for you to invite guests to our Congregation as we progress through this 5780. Our services are truly the best, as we see volunteers on the Bema and hear the Rabbi as he expounds upon Torah. You may stream online but together our prayers are much more meaningful. Make your membership meaningful: participate. Best, Bernie

A "space-time warp" has transported a hapless member of the ancient Judean sect known as the Essenes
into the twenty-first century. While trying to find his way "Back to the Past," he has been co-opted into
disseminating a series of "Desert Disciplines" – straight from the Dead Sea Scrolls – for ordering and
maximizing life to its fullest potential.
