To Our Guests:Visiting a church can be an intimidating experience. We are glad that you are here, and we hope to remove as much of that awkwardness as we can from your visit to Cityview.

Our worship service usually lasts about 90 minutes. This worship guide will help you navigate the service. There are short paragraphs on the next page to explain each part of the service.

The service is designed to be accessible to you, whether you’ve spent years in the church or you’ve never been to a church service in your life. During the service, we will try to help you understand how the message of Jesus can apply to your life today.

If you are new to Cityview or just visiting, we would love to know that you were here. The Connection Cards, which can be found along the center aisle, are a place for you to let us know whatever information you might want us to know, and to request any information from us that you might need. Pastor Dan Adamson (dadamson@cityviewchicago.org) is always enthusiastic to meet you in person, as well.

For Children:Children of all ages are welcome in the worship service.

Nursery is provided during the service for children 3 years of age and younger.

Children ages four through 5th grade are given the choice of attending Sunday school classes beginning during the opportunities and concerns portion of the service.

Community Life:Before the ServiceEach week, we take time before the service to fellowship and prepare for worship. Refreshments are served starting at 9:45 AM outside of the sanctuary.

Community GroupsCommunity Groups are the primary way to get to know people at Cityview. At a Community Group, you will be invited to deepen your spiritual involvement with others. You will find a weekly opportunity to study the scripture passage for the upcoming week’s sermon and pray together.

The LiturgyPreparing in StillnessWe often come into worship tired, overwhelmed and distracted. If we are honest we are not prepared to worship God. Each week, we take a few moments to quiet our hearts to prepare to meet God in worship. Please take this time to read the reflections, look over the rest of the service or pray as we anticipate being called into worship.

Call to WorshipWe need to be “called” to come and worship God because we default to thinking the world revolves around our needs and agendas- and also because we struggle to believe that God truly wants us to draw near to him. The call to worship focuses our attention on God and prepares us to meet him.

Confession of SinBecause sin is so pervasive in both our individual and corporate lives, we are called to come before God with honesty and transparency, confessing our failures and brokenness and asking for both healing and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We confess corporately to show our unity even in our brokenness.

Assurance of GraceChrist has given the Church authority to declare forgiveness of sins in his name. Because of this, when the liturgist proclaims that your sins are forgiven, you can know that Christ agrees.

The SermonSome view the sermon as a way to get principles for “right” living. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore, as you listen, pray to be open to the Spirit’s leading, exhortation, encouragement, and healing.

CommunionCommunion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal for Christians. We welcome all Christians - those who look to Christ alone for salvation, who are in good standing with his church, and who seek strength to live more faithfully to their Savior - to join in this sacrament.

Worship Through GivingBecause money is so powerfully tied to our hearts, this is a valuable expression of worship as we acknowledge that everything we have comes from God and belongs to him. If you are visiting with us, we are glad you are here- please do not feel obligated to give.

The BenedictionGod always gets the last word in our encounter of worship. For Christians, it is always a word of blessing and sending to live our lives in the light of the reality of the Gospel of Christ.

ORDER OF WORSHIP

As we arrive at Jerusalem with Jesus, the question presses upon us. Are we going along for the trip in the hope that Jesus will fulfill some of our hopes and desires? Are we ready to sing a psalm of praise, but only as long as Jesus seems to be doing what we want? The long and dusty pilgrim way of our lives gives most of us plenty of time to sort out our motives for following Jesus in the first place. Are we ready not only to spread our cloaks on the road in front of him, to do the showy and flamboyant thing, but also now to follow him into trouble, controversy, trial and death? - N.T. Wright

During the season of lent we are going to reflect on some of the foundational beliefs we affirm from the Westminster Larger Catechism.

The punishments of sin in this world are either inward, as blindness of mind, a reprobate sense, strong delusions, hardness of heart, horror of conscience, and vile affections; or outward, as the curse of God upon the creatures for our sakes, and all other evils that befall us in our bodies, names, estates, relations, and employments; together with death itself.

4 Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, and who was related to Tobiah, 5 prepared for Tobiah a large chamber where they had previously put the grain offering, the frankincense, the vessels, and the tithes of grain, wine, and oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, singers, and gatekeepers, and the contributions for the priests. 6 While this was taking place, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king. And after some time I asked leave of the king 7 and came to Jerusalem, and I then discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, preparing for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God. 8 And I was very angry, and

Hanan the son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, for they were considered reliable, and their duty was to distribute to their brothers. 14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and for his service. 15 In those days I saw in Judah people treading winepresses on the Sabbath, and bringing in heaps of grain and loading them on donkeys, and also wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of loads, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned them on the day when they sold food. 16 Tyrians also, who lived in the city, brought in fish and all kinds of goods and sold them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah, in Jerusalem itself! 17 Then I confronted the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day? 18 Did not your fathers act in this way, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Now you are bringing more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.” 19 As soon as it began to grow dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut and gave orders that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. And I stationed some of my servants at the gates, that no load might be brought in on the Sabbath day. 20 Then the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice. 21 But I warned them and said to them, “Why do you lodge outside the wall? themselves and come and guard the gates, to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember this also in my favor, O my God, and spare me according to the greatness of your steadfast love. 23 In those days also I saw the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. 24 And half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and they could not speak the language of Judah, but only the language of each people. 25 And I confronted them and cursed them and beat some of them and pulled out their hair. And I made them take an oath in the name of God, saying, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves. 26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin on account of such women? Nevertheless, foreign women made even him to sin. 27 Shall we then listen to you and do all this great evil and act treacherously against our God by marrying foreign women?” 28 And one of the sons of Jehoiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite. Therefore I chased him from me. 29 Remember them, O my God, because they have desecrated the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites. 30 Thus I cleansed them from everything foreign, and I established the duties of the priests and Levites, each in his work; 31 and I provided for the wood offering at appointed times, and for the firstfruits. *Psalms 120-134 are known collectively as the Songs of Ascents. They were used by the Israelites as “pilgrimage” or “processional” songs as they traveled to Jerusalem for the celebration of various festivals. They were a songbook for pilgrims and would have been the Psalms on which Jesus meditated and sang as he traveled to Jerusalem and prepared to take Passover and endure the cross. During Lent, we will recite some of these songs prior to communion as we prepare for Holy Week and anticipate the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection.

Prayer for those searching for truthLord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. As I consider the reasons for doing so, grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

HOLY WEEK - MARCH 29 - APRIL 6 This week marks the beginning of Holy week, when we remember and celebrate the suffering and death of our Lord. Join us this Friday for a somber and meditative Good Friday service, then celebrate Christ’s resurrection with us on Easter Sunday!

THE DOCTRINE OF SALVATION APRIL 12 - MAY 10 / SUNDAY - 9:00 - 9:45AM Easter is the time of the year when we celebrate the good news that God has saved us in Christ. To celebrate this truth and to increase our Christian discipleship, we will spend five weeks during Easter reflecting on the meaning of this good news. We will ask “what is the Gospel?” and “what does it mean that God saves us in Christ?” We will examine the meaning of the doctrines of justification, sanctification, and God’s election. We will ask questions about human freedom in relation to God’s predestination, aiming to deepen our understanding of the significance of God’s salvation offered to us in Christ.GOOD FRIDAY & EASTER AESTHETICS To enhance our worship spaces for Holy Week, the Aesthetics team is needing to collect the following items (or have them donated): candles and candle holders (tealight or larger), solid black table cloths/fabric pieces, unique lamps (easily portable), and small crates (plastic or wooden). Please contact Peter Schamp or Joyce Vargas if you can assist us!SUNDAY PRAYER Sunday Prayer will pick back up at Cityview Commons (841 W Monroe) on April 12. LOOKING FOR ROOMMATES: Cityview has been contacted by multiple young adults who are going to be moving in to the city for the summer and are looking for a church to call home while they are in town. If you are looking for a roommate or have a room to spare for the summer months, please let Carolyn know so she can put you in contact with these individuals. GREETING TEAM: We’ve officially split up the set-up and greeting teams! Consider joining the greeting team to engage newcomers and acclimate them to Cityview. This is a once every 4-6 weeks volunteer commitment with 9:30 am arrival time. Contact Drew Lanphear for more information. NEAR NORTH RIDE SHARING If you are willing to be a driver on the Near North ride sharing rotation, email Carolyn. This is a one per month volunteer committment. Pick up location is Moody Bible Institute at 821 N. Wells. BREAKTHROUGH’S FRESH MARKET Breakthrough’s Fresh Market is a client-choice food pantry which invites residents of East Garfield Park to shop for groceries, free of charge, based on their family size. Breakthrough needs our help to stack produce, move boxes, set up a small grocery store, and help shoppers choose food items! Volunteers are especially needed on Saturday mornings.
