DÍAS DE AYUNO Y ABSTINENCIA
•El Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo, son días de ayuno y abstinencia.
•Todos los viernes de Cuaresma son días de absti-nencia de carne. Pero el Episcopado Mexicano ha dispuesto que: “se puede suplir la abstinen-cia de carne, excepto la del Miércoles de Ceniza y Viernes Santo, por:
∗la abstinencia de aquellos alimentos que para cada uno significan especial agrado, sea por la materia o por el modo de preparación;
∗o por una especial obra de caridad; ∗o por una especial obra de piedad; ∗o por otro significativo sacrificio voluntario”.
•Sujeto de la ley del ayuno y la abstinencia: - Abstinencia de carne: todos los que han cum-plido 14 años. EL hecho de tener 60 años o más, no exime de esta ley de abstinencia.
- Ayuno: todos los que han cumplido 18 años, hasta el comienzo de los 60.
•Lo más importante al hacer este tipo de practi-cas es darle sentido verdadero: por una parte
someter la voluntad para fortalecerla con virtudes como la templanza, la sobriedad y la humildad, y por otra, favorecer el ejercicio de la caridad, pues todos los sa-crificios que se realizan deben apuntar a hacer un bien o un servicio al prójimo y a toda la Iglesia. Hacer sacrificios y peni-tencia por costumbre o porque todos lo hacen, no tiene sentido y no favorecen el crecimiento del hombre, que en conclu-sión es lo que se pretende.
LENTEN REGULATIONS
• Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent (excluding the Solemnity of St. Joseph per Canon 1251).
• Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
• On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.
• To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful.
Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faith-ful are strongly urged to de-velop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addi-tion to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.

Great job!...During Catholic Schools Week, Holy Family hosted a Penny Wars contest to raise money for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Together Holy Family raised over $800. Second grade won the contest, but everyone deserves a heart-felt thank you for helping this wonderful cause! Thank you...for your continued patience, prayers, and support as we progress with the rebuilding of our school campus. Our target move in date is still April 10th. Box Tops for Education...We are still collecting Box Tops to help raise funds for our school. You can drop them off in the school office. Abstinence: So why aren’t you eating pepperoni
pizza on Friday?
You love pepperoni pizza. You eat it all the time. Sud-denly, you can’t have it on Fridays?! What could possi-bly be going on? It must be that Catholic thing, again. Absolutely! On Fridays during Lent, we particularly remember the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. In mem-ory of this great sacrifice, we continue the tradition of penance and sacrifice – abstaining from meat on Fri-days is an outward manifestation of an interior reality: the conversion of our hearts. As Pope John Paul II has said, “In fact, the external aspects of fasting, though important, do not convey the full measure of the prac-tice. Joined to the practice should be a sincere desire for inner purification, readiness to obey the divine will and thoughtful solidarity with our brothers and sisters, espe-cially the very poor.” Christ himself fasted and prayed in the desert. Through fasting and praying, we unite ourselves with the sacrifice of Christ and offer him reparation for our sins and failings. It’s a little thing to give him in the face of his ultimate sacrifice, but what a grace that our God accepts and loves little gifts!
During Lent, when your friends or co-workers express curiosity about Catholic customs and symbolism,
use those moments as opportunities to evangelize!

Una de las tradiciones religiosas más arraigadas en nuestra nación es la representación de la Pasión del Señor. En ella interviene todo el pueblo para crear un espectáculo visual en el que se reviven los últimos momentos de la vida de Jesucristo, desde la entrada gloriosa en Jerusalén hasta la Resurrección. Es una costumbre que sirve para recordar el misterio pascual de Cristo y, en definitiva, es una catequesis viviente. Desde muy antiguo, los cristianos han sentido este de-seo de representar y hacer viva la Pasión del Señor. Así fue como nació el Vía Crucis (“camino de la cruz”) en Jerusalén, una forma de oración en la que se recorría el itinerario que siguió Je-sucristo desde el cuartel de Pilatos hasta el Calvario y el Sepulcro, deteniéndose a rezar en al-gunos puntos o “estaciones” señalados con una cruz y adornados con representaciones que ex-plicaban lo que sucedió en cada una de ellas. Se acompañaba a Jesucristo en su Pasión de forma física caminando por donde Él caminó, y de forma espiritual con la oración contemplativa en diálogo con Dios. El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica en el número 2669 nos dice: “La oración cristiana practica el Vía Crucis siguiendo al Salvador. Las estaciones desde el Pretorio, al Gól-gota y al Sepulcro jalonan el recorrido de Jesús que con su Santa Cruz nos redimió”. Este es el sentido del Vía Crucis, seguir a Jesucristo en su camino hasta la cruz.

Lenten Speaker Series
Come Closer to God At our first Monday night presentation, Dr. Mary Amore gave us a beautiful reflection on the holy Eucharist and how it truly transforms our lives. We learned how God’s presence in the Eucharist heals and enables us to grow in service as it nourishes us with mercy and grace. Her perspective gave all of us much to think about, pray about and appreciate. On Monday evening, March 5 at 7 PM, we will continue with our second Lenten presentation. Our pre-senter is Sister Jane Schlosser whose topic will be: Lost and Found: The Hidden Treasures of Lent. This presentation will look at some of the gospel images of lost treasures being found: sons or daughters, coins, lambs. She will help us reflect on our hidden treasures as we journey through Lent. Sr. Jane Schlosser, RSM, D.Min., received her Doctorate in Ministry in 1980. Her dissertation was written on Preparing Ministers of Care. She is currently one of the regular presenters for both the Chicago and Joliet Offices of Divine Worship’s program for Ministry of Care. Sister Jane is a staff member at the Carmelite Spiritual Center in Darien, Illinois. * * * * * * * *

Life is filled with situations that can try and test us as Stewards of God’s Kingdom. Such situations can either bring out the best in us or the worst. We have only to look to recent storms, earthquakes or other disasters and remember how people responded in their aftermath for examples of both. What seems to have made the difference for many was faith in God, and a commitment to Stewardship.
