See through Water (art exhibit): The quality of light affects

the nature of surface reflection. The colors from the

surrounding landscape contribute to the overall appearance

by means of the reflective surface. The transparency of the

water allows for the inclusion of information about what is

below the surface. The speed of the water movement affects

how light is cast onto the stream bottom. The fact of so

many levels of information enables me to break down a

photograph into pieces and then play with the pieces until a

new whole is created.

THE

BBBS NEWS

ALL ABOUT BBBS IN THE COMMUNITY EXCLUSIVE NEWS

TODAY

SPOT LIGHT

Big Brother Forrest, who has

been matched for only four

months, has already seized upon

opportunities to make a

difference in the life of his Little

Brother. Rather than shying

away from potentially awkward

conversation or the possibility of

ruffling his Little’s feathers,

when Forrest learned that his

Little was having some serious

academic struggles that may

prevent him from the sports

involvement he’s always

dreamed of, he took on the

issue without reserve. Brother Forrest

The two sat over dinner talking about where Forrest is today and how he got there before identifying the

Little’s problems areas. At first the Little indicated trouble with focus and concepts; areas identified by his

mom and the school as the culprits. Forrest found it hard to believe that this was really what has holding

his Little Brother back, so he asked his Little to forget what people have been telling him the problem is

and to give his own honest opinion. The Little said that he hasn’t been trying hard enough in class. Forrest

says that this was the moment of progress; his Little identified the problem as coming from himself, and

then the two were able to begin mapping out a plan for achievement.

CREATIVE CRAFTS March is National Craft Month. Here are

some fun crafts to do with your Little!

Dr. Seuss Day Celebration

March 2nd is Dr. Seuss Day. Reading Green Eggs

and Ham and then making your very own green

eggs would be a great way to celebrate. You

like kiwi, celery, or asparagus. Or pour a bowl of

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

FUN QUESTIONS:

Find yourself having a good time with your Little and then all of a

sudden run out of things to talk about? Having one of those moments

of a “Brain Fart” and loss your train of thought? Having a difficult time

getting a conversation rolling? Looking to get to know them on a

deeper level? Then try these assort variety of conversation starters.

You can ask your Little a question, then have them as you a question

in return and turn it into a game!

At what point in history do you think Americans stopped having British accents?

If you had 3 wishes that had to be “spent” on you and you could not wish for more wishes,

what would you wish for?

What do you think the most ultimate gift of the world is?

If you were an animal, what animal would you be?

If you were to change your name, what would you change your name to? Why?

If you could have anything in the world what would it be?

YOUR

POISON: -Who would win a fight, Batman or Ironman?

-Would you rather have a yacht or an airplane?

-Would you rather live in a Mansion or treehouse?

-You have to eat cockroaches or a grasshopper.

Which would you choose?

Are these questions too easy for your Little?

Looking for something that takes more thought?

Want to try stumping your Little? Or just

looking for more involved questions to ask? Try

out one of these questions or introduce your little

to one of these quotes and ask them what it means

to them. What they respond might surprise you!

(Use the things inside the parenthesis to help

guide them if your Little is having trouble)

NOT A SIMPLE

QUESTION: 1) What is a leader? What defines a leader?

Are you born as one, known as a natural

born leader? Can you be a leader without

followers? (There are no such things as

“Natural Born Leaders”. It is a skill that

anyone can develop over time like learning to

play basketball or learning a new language. It

takes time to get it down)

2) What is the difference between living and

existing? (One can interpret “living” as

feeling the surroundings and experiencing

them. Whereas “existing” can be the mere fact

that we or something is here at all)

QUOTES TO

THINK ABOUT:

“The greatest prison that

people live in is the fear of

what other people think” (A lot of

people care about what others think about

them and therefore they choose to do things

based on what others think and say)

“Climb Mountains not so the

world can see you, but so you

can see the world” (Don’t do things

because you feel like others will acknowledge

you or they tell you to. Do it to see if you can.

Do it to get out of your comfort zone you

might find something new you like. Do it to

see if you can do it)

“You learn more from failure

than from success. Don’t let it

stop you. Failure builds

character” (Failures teach you what

things you did right and more importantly

what things you did wrong. This benefits you

because next time you try you know what not

to do, where if you fail, you didn’t learn a

valuable that you otherwise would have

learned)

Mentoring Tip

Remember the old saying,

“Rome wasn’t built in a day”.

It takes time to be a better you

so don’t try to do it all in one

day. Spread it out and there

will be no limit to what you

can accomplish.

SOMETHING TO

THINK ABOUT:

Be a better you……

Want to make an improve about yourself or

change something in a drastic way, in a way that

is manageable? Try doing it with this little simple

tip. Instead of trying to improve yourself in one day,

try spreading it out over a wider period of time. For

example, want to learn French? Try learning 5

words a day. By the end of the year, you’ll know

about 1,825 words. Want to try a new hair style?

Instead of going straight to it, try getting 2-3

different haircuts that slowly moves into the style

you want! It’s less stressful and people will not

notice. Want to stretch the boundaries of your

comfort zone and be more adventurous? Instead

of going skydiving the next day or swimming in

the open sea with sharks. Try doing something

new you’ve never done before each week. You’ll

learn more about yourself and have more stories

to tell people and learn about more things you

like to do. After awhile, if you really want to go

swimming with sharks, let me say it again,

sharks. Go right ahead, you adventurous soul.
