The Ten Commandments are well-known, so why should we bother reading them? Being well- known does not mean being well-kept. Being read does not mean being lived out in one’s life. The Ten Commandments suffer from our television mentality. If we see or hear something more than once we label it “a rerun.” The Ten Commandments are a rerun that we are all too familiar and too comfortable with. Is it possible that there is a major sub- plot to the Commandments? In fact, it is possible that the major plot escapes us? Let’s take a new look. The conventional approach to the Ten Commandments holds that they are the bottom line of our relationship with God and one another. They are the moral basics which cannot be compromised. If you want to know in a “clear and distinct way” what God requires of you, just follow these legal-ethical principles. It is all so easy—perhaps too easy. And this may be why the Ten Commandments have fallen on hard times in the minds of many. To consider the Ten Commandments a legal code or an ethical program is to miss the major meaning and insight of what they are about. Well then, what are the Ten Commandments? The Decalogue, the whole of Exodus chap- ters 19 and 20 should be studied in order to fully appreciate it. The Ten Commandments is a profound religious experience in which God makes himself known to a group of hu- man beings within history. God offers a glimpse of what he is about and what he expects of us if we are to experience covenant. Third Sunday of Lent Theme: The Law
Dear brothers and sisters, right in the middle of Lent we are reading the Law. The Ten
Commandments are well-known, so why should we bother reading them? Being well-
known does not mean being well-kept. Being read does not mean being lived out in one’s
life. The Ten Commandments suffer from our television mentality. If we see or hear
something more than once we label it “a rerun.” The Ten Commandments are a rerun that
we are all too familiar and too comfortable with. Is it possible that there is a major sub-
plot to the Commandments? In fact, it is possible that the major plot escapes us? Let’s
take a new look.
The conventional approach to the Ten Commandments holds that they are the bottom line
of our relationship with God and one another. They are the moral basics which cannot be
compromised. If you want to know in a “clear and distinct way” what God requires of

Queridos hermanos y hermanas, justo en el medio de la Cuaresma estamos leyendo la
Ley. Los Diez Mandamientos son bien conocidos, entonces, ¿por qué deberíamos moles-
tarnos en leerlos? Ser conocido no significa estar bien cuidado. Ser leído no significa ser
vivido en la vida. Los Diez Mandamientos sufren de nuestra mentalidad televisiva. Si

rígido y seco de reglas y regulaciones legales. Es mucho más
fácil tratar con un Dios que simplemente quiere que obedezca-
mos y confirmemos. Es mucho menos exigente relacionarse con
un Dios que simplemente quiere que nos inclinemos y ofrezca-
mos palabras de alabanza. Sin embargo, lo que cuentan la histo-
ria del Sinaí y el Decálogo es algo bastante diferente. Dios quie-
re y desea de una manera total. Dios quiere que tengamos un
cambio de corazón y lo adoremos con algo más que palabras y
comportamiento externo. Debe haber renovación interior y con-
versión de corazón para que podamos devolver el amor, el espí-
ritu y la verdad de Dios.
Nos gustaría aceptar a Dios y sus Diez Mandamientos. Sin em-
bargo, esto no es de lo que se trata el pacto. Aceptar a este apa-
sionado y amoroso Dios de Sinaí significa que uno debe experi-
mentar una transformación total del corazón. Debemos cambiar
y vivir de tal manera que cuando los demás nos encuentren, lle-
guen a creer que el amor está en el centro de la realidad.
La historia del Sinaí, con su tremendo poder, es una guía en la
historia de Jesús. Llegamos a saber, a través del Sinaí, que Dios
nos ama y se preocupa por nosotros. El pacto es el compromiso
de Dios con nosotros. Con el envío de Jesús, vemos cuánto nos
ama Dios. La muerte y la resurrección de Cristo es la sabiduría,
la locura y el poder de Dios, que es un obstáculo para muchos;
pero para aquellos que son llamados, es la esperanza de la glo-
ria.
La lectura de los Diez Mandamientos nos avisa. Tendremos que
tomar una decisión. No es una decisión obedecer o no obedecer,
conformarse o rebelarse; todo eso sería fácil. Más bien, debemos
decidir si responderemos al amor ilimitado y apasionado de Dios
por nosotros. Debemos decidir si entraremos en el pacto y sere-
mos transformados interiormente por el poder de su amor. Tal
decisión no puede posponerse para un momento posterior, más
conveniente. Hoy, hemos escuchado la palabra de Dios. En esta
temporada de Cuaresma estamos llamados a ser conscientes de
su tremendo amor. ¡La decisión debe tomarse ahora!

Most often we want to turn the Decalogue into a rigid, dry
code of legal rules and regulations. It is much easier to deal
with a God who simply wants us to obey and confirm. It is
much less demanding to relate to a God who simply wants us
to bow and offer words of praise. However, what the Sinai
story and the Decalogue tell is something quite different.
God wants and desires us in a total way. God wants us to
have a change of heart and worship him with more than word
and external behavior. There must be inner renewal and con-
version of heart so that we can return God’s love, spirit and
truth.
We would like to accept God and his Ten Commandments.
Yet this is not what covenant is about. To accept this pas-
sionate, loving God of Sinai means that one must undergo a
total transformation of heart. We must change and live in
such a way that when others encounter us, they will come to
believe that love is at the center of reality.
The Sinai story, with its tremendous power, is a lead into the
story of Jesus. We come to know, through Sinai, that God
loves and cares for us. The covenant is God’s commitment to
us. With the sending of Jesus we come to see just how much
God loves us. The death and resurrection of Christ is the
wisdom, folly and power of God which is a stumbling block
for many; but for those who are called, it is hope of glory.
The reading of the Ten Commandments puts us on notice.
We will have to make a decision. It is not a decision to obey
or not to obey, to conform or to rebel; all that would be easy.
Rather, we must decide if we will respond to God’s un-
bounded, passionate love for us. We must decide if we will
enter the covenant and be inwardly transformed by the power
of his love. Such decision cannot be put off to a later, more
convenient time. Today, we have heard God’s word. In this
season of Lent we are called to be mindful of his tremendous
love. The decision must be made now!
