Dedicated to fishing in and around Collier County

President’s Message November 2011

Peter Arcidiacono 821-7499 [email protected] HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!! Lots of changes are happening with our club and all for the

better! 1st off, we are planning another HOLIDAY PARTY. This one will be at ROSE HALL on Friday, DECEMBER 16TH and will be catered by Kretch’s. It will feature a Roast Beef Carving station and many more appetizers as well as Beer, wine and soft drinks. See the flyer in the newsletter for details and don’t delay, we need a head count ASAP. By attending our Holiday party you will get an advanced look at OUR NEW MEETING PLACE effective JANUARY. That’s correct; we will have our January GENERAL Meeting in Rose Hall at the Historical Society building on Bald Eagle Drive. The meeting will remain on the 1st Thursday of the month as it has always been, just a new place.

I am excited about the new meeting hall, I feel since we are a significant part of the Island it only natural we support this hall and the Historical Society. I would like to thank the Jewish Community Center and it’s congregation

for their hospitality and co-operation with us throughout the past years. They allowed us to use their facility and gave us an opportunity to a variety of events with has added to our growth.

November events will start off with Jody Weiss of the Weiss Guy, one of the premier Charter boat Offshore Captains on Marco. Jody will speak on Off Shore fishing concentrating on Grouper and Cobia. This will coincide with our off shore event “SUPER GROUPER” to be held on November 15th. Details at meeting and below. There will be a very SPECIAL presentation of the coveted Triple Crown Trophy to end up the meeting, don’t miss out. Remember, you can’t catch fish in front of the TV! See ya’ at the bait shop! October 6 Meeting Items

The meeting focused on the upcoming Redfish VI tournament that was held October 17-22. For those that missed it, the following photos give some highlights of the event. The meeting started off with two speakers. First was Attny Craig Woodward, who gave a presentation on historic Marco Island and Fishing. He is active in the Marco Island Historical Society and has a great collection of images from the turn of the last century.

Craig Woodward-Speaker Vintage Photo from Presentation The next speaker was Capt. Kevin Merritt, of Red Dawn Back Country Adventures (239)289-7228. He gave a talk that discussed some of his methods for finding and catching this month’s FOM, Redfish. His discussion was at a higher level than what most guides give and discussed effect of tides, baits, currents, water temperature and of course tackle to be successful on the backwater.

Capt Pete (R) thanking Capt Kevin Merritt for his talk on catching Redfish.

REDFISH VI Rodeo Results and Awards picnic Parts Contributed by Howard Laskau

Marco Sportfishing Club’s Redfish Rodeo week came to a close on Saturday, the 22nd’, afternoon at an awards BBQ held at Sarazen Park. The week started on a rainy note as 24 determined anglers competed in a Guide/Member tournament on a very wet Tuesday. But, the weather cleared for Thursday and Friday, and gave the 70 anglers entered in the 2-day Redfish VI tournament a few great days of fishing. The 70 anglers were split in half, with 35 on the Red Team and 35 on the Blue Team. The anglers competed for team, boat and individual prizes. The prizes were donated to the club by local retailers and merchants. The competition was close on the first day. The Red Team caught 40 Redfish and the Blue Team caught 42. But, on day 2, the Blue team pulled ahead. They were led by the boat of Andrea Battaglia and Bryan Mordecai, who together landed 16 Redfish on Friday. That brought the Blue Team total for the day to 74 Redfish. Those 74 fish and the 42 caught the previous day accounted for 2002 inches of Redfish for the Blue Team. When added to the 82 Redfish (1392 inches) caught by the Red Team during the two day tournament, a total of 198 Redfish measuring 3394 inches were caught during the 2-day

event.

Saturday’s Award Ceremony’s Chefs-A Beautiful Day to Celebrate

Redfish Tuesday Despite the rain, a tropical depression, and an impending cold front about to pass through the region, the Marco Sportfishing Club’s Redfish Tuesday Guide Tournament went off as scheduled on the 18th. The Tuesday Tournament is just one event in the

Club’s “Redfish Rodeo Week” that began Monday, the 17th, night with a “Kickoff” at Bistro Soleil restaurant. This is the first year the “Guided” tournament has taken place. 12 of the area’s top fishing captains/guides were teamed up with 12 teams of 2 MSC anglers for an exciting day of fishing. The anglers selected their guide by random draw of a card. Prizes will be awarded for the largest, 2nd largest and 3rd largest Redfish caught as well as the largest Snook caught during the day. The event started at Walker’s Coon Key Marina at sunrise. Walker’s Marina, Yamaha, and Maverick Boat Company were sponsors of the event. Boats were due back to the marina at 2 PM. Following verification of each boat’s catch (via photographs) prizes were awarded during an awards celebration/picnic at the marina in the afternoon.

Rumor has it that one lucky MSC member caught a redfish on that rainy Tuesday, before 8 am and thinking it was large enough to win, then had his guide go back to dock by 9:30. The rumor also has it that the fisherman then went home, took a shower, ate lunch and took a nap. He then drove to the dock to meet the rest of the soggy competitors at 2pm. This fisherman’s plans were outdone though by Kristine’s Lady Luck, as he lost by a HALF INCH! Contact “The Harder I Work the Luckier I Get” book author, Leo Sutera, to see if rumor is true…
