The village Marena Wangar, located at the bank of dangerous Ram Ganga river remains cut off from the rest of the world in the rainy season. The general population is poor & follows seasonal migration to sustain. The majority of the villagers are landless & lives in very miserable conditions. It is also a known fact that many in the village has a past history of indulging in dacoity, loots & kidnappings. The people are mainly self centric with scant respect for each other & use of abuses in normal talks is very common.

We tried to bring a cultural revolution based on strong moral values & respect. We changed the way the students of SBS Marena interact with each other. We put in place a workable code of discipline & expected behaviors. We inspire each other to respectful, careful & considerate

Page 3: Marena wangar

District Sports Meet held at SBS Gurgawan exposed the students for the first time tototally different culture where children were respectful & friendly with each other.Pushpendra father has migrated to Delhi in search of work & he was born there & now his family has returned back to settle in the village,Pushpendra is not feelingat ease in his own village as children here are abusive & talks disrespectfully.Students are also surprised as why Pushpendra gets angry when they tried to talk.

The general culture of the village is much uncivilized with men & women fighting on petty issues for days & hurling choicest of abuses at each other.Parents talk to their children in a very harsh & undignified tone.People let their animals into other fields for grazing leading to dispute. The material sent by the Govt for laying of Khadanja & roads is stolen by the villagers.Every person in the village has got a second abusive name based on his physical appearance or economic conditions.

The best part of the idea is that we want to change the way peopleInteract with each other. For that we have to be the change that is desired. Our students mustbe the role models for the society to follow. For that workshops on behavior were conducted by the teachers.

Testing theGrounds

Aashirvaad:As has been the Indian Tradition,DFC team met Sarpanch,ex-Sarpanch & other elders to seek their blessings for the campaign

Village Survey:A survey was conducted in thevillage to make a list of bad habits among the villagers, foul words often used & the reasons for this social degradation.Survey helps us in formulating our strategies to replace each abuse with a good word or line

Target Group:Social etiquettes will be promoted in the village but to find result in concrete form, we need to have a target group. On the basis of the survey we decided to focus on children, who are animal grazers or work in fields. They are the most exploited one & are infamous for their bad behavior. They play violent games & hurled abuses while leaving their animals to graze in other fields. They mercilessly beat animals& steal fodder from the fields. They are also addicted to gambling & drug abuse.

Be the Change

Talking with the parents & community elders gave us the ideathat they are eager for change but the change will take time.As per our plan, we tried to create real life situations where one easily leave behind good habits. Skits, demonstrations & mock display of social etiquettes were conducted.

Walk the Talk:A live exhibition of social Etiquettesat corner meetings to showcase to The community, what it means to bemannered. The real life situations in the village were taken up as example for thesedemonstrations.

Ashoka Pillars:Just like the Ancient King Ashoka,Who inscribed do’s & don’ts for his subjects. The DFC Team decided to use the useless electricity pillars of the village to paste the appeals & quotations on them. These appeals were read aloud whenever someone passes by.

Wall writings;Students write slogans and drawpictures on the walls to demonstrate the idea of a civilized society

Please, Thank you & Sorry:These beautiful words were made popular in the village. Toffees to the Children & roses to the elders were given on the use of these words.

The Journey of Change

The Animal Grazers:The meetings with the animal grazers wasreally an eye opener as we came to know that the grazing fields of the village are the breeding grounds for future criminals. One of our own ex-students was there in their company & it was shocking for us to know that he was fast learning their ways. It was a hard bargain for us to make them sit & listen & only the intervention from Mr.Sarpanch melts the ice despite their notoriety, we recognize an innocent shyness in them. We told them about good manners & social etiquettes. We make them hold hands each other hands & sing a song while dancing. Few teambuilding activities were conducted with them & a video was shown to them to inculcate compassion towards animals. They promised to change themselves.
