Pope Francis’ message for Lent 2016 (excerpt of the official English translation)

1. Mary, the image of a Church that evangelizes because she is evangelized. In the Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, I asked that “the season of Lent in this Jubilee Year be lived more intensely as a privileged moment to celebrate and experience God’s mercy” (Misericordiae Vultus, 17).

2. God’s covenant with humanity: a history of mercy. The mystery of divine mercy is revealed in the history of the covenant between God and his people Israel. God shows himself ever rich in mercy, ever ready to treat his people with deep tenderness and compassion, especially at those tragic moments when infidelity ruptures the bond of the covenant, which then needs to be ratified more firmly in justice and truth.

3. The works of mercy. God’s mercy transforms human hearts; it enables us, through the experience of a faithful love, to become merciful in turn. In an ever new miracle, divine mercy shines forth in our lives, inspiring each of us to love our neighbor and to devote ourselves to what the Church’s tradition calls the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. These works remind us that faith finds expression in concrete, everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit: by feeding, visiting, comforting and instructing them.

For all of us, then, the season of Lent in this Jubilee Year is a favorable time to overcome our existential alienation by listening to God’s word and by practicing the works of mercy.

What’s your Lenten Journey for 2016? Preparing for Lent means getting ready to hear and heed what God wants to say to you during this time. Three general directives include:

Intensify your prayer life. Start thinking about how you will do this. God will put something in your heart, and remember to be realistic.

Embrace the Cross. Lent is a penitential season. Renew commitments and efforts at repenting and growing in Christian love. Say “yes” to God’s will and follow Jesus’ footsteps.

Practice Christian charity. Lent is a time to prepare for the fruitful celebration of the Lord’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection during Holy Week. The Paschal Mystery was God’s unfathomable and amazing testimony of love for us sinners with such charitable acts like serving your neighbors, visiting the sick, or helping the homeless.

LENT

Let us pray: “Pour out a spirit of compunction, O God, on those who bow before your majesty,

and by your mercy may they merit the rewards you promise to those who do penance.”

(Prayer over the people on Ash Wednesday)

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Lent is a privileged time of interior pilgrimage towards Him who is the fount of mercy.

“The annual observance of Lent is the special season for the ascent to the holy mountain of Easter. Catechumens are led to the sacraments of initiation by means of the rite of election, the scrutinies, and catechesis. The faithful, listening more intently to the word of God and devoting themselves to prayer, are prepared through a spirit of repentance to renew their baptismal promises” (Ceremony of Bishops, 249).

Let us enter the penitential spirit of Lent. Let us embrace the difficulties, even crisis and “make sacred” all that surrounds us. God is present to us in the midst of helplessness and weakness. Jesus walks with us as a family and as a community: “Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (Mt. 18:20).

We are called to help one another to find God in the merciful face of Christ through:

Fasting and Almsgiving, together in Prayer:

The law of fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday applies to all persons ages 18 to 59.

All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. Abstinence from eating meat is to be observed on all Fridays during Lent. This applies to all persons ages 14 and older.

The Stations of the Cross will take place on all Fridays during Lent at 7:00pm.

May this Lenten season find the whole Church ready to bear witness to all those who live in material, moral, and spiritual destitution the Gospel message of the merciful love of God, our Father, who is ready to embrace everyone in Christ.

“We adore you, O Christ, and we praise You.

Because, by Your Holy Cross, You have redeemed the world.”

May Mary, our Holy Mother, woman of faith and sorrows,

lead us to her Son. May our faith make us loyal and faithful to Him.

Fr. Sang Tran, Pastor
