A t 131 feet (40 metres) Sunseeker’s 131 Yacht will be the largest model ever to make its debut at the London Boat Show, and will appear alongside a stunning collection of other Sunseeker models ranging from 50 feet upwards.
The first of three large models set for launch in early 2016, the groundbreaking new 131 Yacht takes Sunseeker’s superyacht capabilities to new levels. Exclusive pictures released earlier this year revealed the sumptuous quality and attention to detail that have gone into this innovative new take on Sunseeker’s proven superyacht platform. A standout feature is the addition of feature glass in the Master Stateroom, Saloon and Upper Saloon to create a light-filled, relaxed, comfortable and enjoyable environment for owner and guests.
The 131 Yacht enables its owner to tailor every element of the interior design and layout to their personal preferences via Sunseeker’s unique ‘Bespoke’ service. Standard guest configuration is for 10 guests in five cabins, with scope for up to 12 to be accommodated depending on the layout and options selected. The spacious garage can accommodate a tender of up to 6.0m in length plus two PWCs.
Based on the classic Sunseeker deep V hull, this large tri-deck yacht is equally comfortable operating at 10 knots for an extended cruising range of 1,500 nautical miles or at 23 knots for ultimate performance. Build time for each new 131 Yacht is around one year, with capacity in place to have up to five yachts in build simultaneously. Demand for the 131 Yacht is already extremely high with the first five already sold.
I n the 1980s, Bayliner brought affordable sportscruisers to the masses. With the launch of its mass-produced Ciera range the company invaded the UK and put mid-20-foot cruisers in front of customers at prices the premium manufacturers just couldn’t
compete with. While there was no doubt that a Fairline 21 Sprint was a far more nicely put together craft, that the cheaper Bayliner 2455 offered much more space for less cash was inarguable. You could put a 2455 Ciera on the water brand new for under £20,000. First time buyers took to them in droves and the range expanded, driving established European builders up in size where quality was an easier sell. By the early nineties, the Fairline 21 Sprint, 24 Carerra and 26 Sunfury were gone, along with the Princess 266 Riviera and sundry Sunseekers. The Americans were here to stay – piling ’em high and selling ’em cheap. A little rough around the edges they might have been, but they probably did more to put new boaters on the water than anyone else.
But after two decades at the top of this rapidly burgeoning sector, Bayliner lost their way and, in the late noughties, to everyone’s surprise, announced total withdrawal from the sportscruiser arena to concentrate on speedboats and cuddy cabins.
They’re back now though, and as well as selling them in Europe, Bayliner is building them here too, in a brand new plant in Poland. In fact these boats are solely for the European market; they won’t be sold in the States.
A very different profile from Cieras of old, this latest model has lost the wedge-shaped form of earlier iterations and lost the pointless vestigial side decks, the cabin top being high, wide and flat. It gives the boat a slightly dumpy look, but it’s not without its advantages. Accessed via a centre opening screen and chunky steps built into the sliding cabin door, the gentle cant of the roof allows this area to become usable deck space, laid out with sun cushions to create a great spot to top up your tan. It makes for a fair-sized drop to the pontoon though, so figure on the bow thruster to control the bow in marina confines while the crew egress via the wide bathing platform.
The cockpit is classically laid out with a pair of seats aft around a drop-in table and a longitudinal seat adjacent to the double helm gifting height in the mid cabin. The helm seat is fixed but has a lift bolster and the wheel tilt adjusts.
Open-tread steps access the cabin and it is down here that you really feel the benefit of that flat, full-width foredeck. Headroom carries well forward and there’s plenty of elbow room too, as the dinette is allowed to stretch out to the hull sides. Like the cockpit, the layout is entirely conventional. There’s a horseshoe of dinette at the front, a galley to port, heads opposite (which incorporates a shower but not quite standing headroom) and back aft the open-plan mid cabin offers a permanent double berth beneath the forward section
of the cockpit. It’s well thought out: those open-tread steps help alleviate claustrophobia in the mid section, and the unusual profile of the dinette backrests is due to incorporation of the infill cushions that allow this area to convert into a dinette. While the layout might not be a quantum leap over earlier Bayliner boats, the finish certainly is. There is no bare GRP anywhere down here – soft linings are the order of the day. The colour scheme is subtle too, which will appeal to the European tastes that this boat is aimed at.
It is still a Bayliner though, so don’t expect Sea Ray rivalling levels of quality. It’s the same at the helm, where Bayliner have built in space for a plotter and chrome-rimmed the gauges, but the panels are still flat grey plastic held in place with exposed black screws. Amusingly, the switches are dead ringers for the toggle switches of Bayliner past – a nice retro touch. One of them operates a power engine-hatch lift though; you wouldn’t have got
one of those in the eighties! Toggle it and the whole aft seating area lifts. It’s painfully slow, but once it’s up the access is superb – right to the edges.
Sat centre stage in the engine bay is Mercruiser’s very latest petrol engine, the brand new 4.5 litre V6. In the past, Mercruiser has based its petrol motors around automotive GM blocks. But not this time – this engine is pure Mercruiser through and through.
Our test boat sports the more powerful 250hp variant of the two versions of this motor (the alternative being 200hp). With five heavy adults on board on our test it
needed every last horsepower of it too: even with the leg trimmed right in, acceleration onto the plane is a stately affair. Once up and running it proves entirely adequate, revving out to 30 knots at 5,000rpm, cruising comfortably at 4,500. And the handling is a revelation in comparison to the bone-shaking hard ride of its

The swiTches are dead ringers for The Toggle swiTches of
ancestors – their ‘sequential lift’ hull providing plenty of the latter at the expense of your fillings. This latest incarnation does an entirely passable job of parting the waves. It’s dry, too, throwing spray out wide. That flat foredeck does impinge on the forward view though, especially at lower planing speeds where the Ciera 8 is quick to settle at the stern. I found myself using the bolster or standing to maintain forward vision – and I’m not exactly short.
It’s fantastic to see Bayliner back in the starter sportscruiser market. Instrumental in introducing many families to the joys of life afloat, this vessel represents exactly the shot in the arm that this sector needs.

That concept of choice and variety also extends to the audio-visual systems. Again divided into zones, everyone can be their own DJ with access to a central server containing up to 9,000 albums. Not enough choice? Then guests can connect their own iPods or other devices and stream their own music through the system. Special software written to link the audio to the lighting creates the ultimate sound and light show.
A 50-inch Samsung TV in the saloon is augmented by a Dolby 5.1 surround sound system with upgraded amplifiers and speakers. It sources films and TV shows from a 2TB Kaleidescape 1U Disc Vault server. Again controlled wirelessly, it is capable of storing 180 Blu Ray movies and 500 dvd movies and distributing them to any screen within the accommodation. And there’s one further screen that it feeds – on the flybridge a specially fabricated retractable TV assembly has been installed in the hardtop, allowing a 40-inch TV to be viewed from the spa bath. A self-tracking gyro-stabilised KVH Tracvision M9 satellite dome provides up to the minute broadcasting as an alternative.
WAter toysBut life isn’t all about entertainment coming to you, sometimes you want to go to it, and to that end the hydraulic bathing platform is worth a visit. The transom garage has been turned into a veritable toy box, with three Seabob F5 S underwater scooters (one in each of the available colours) fitted to a Harken track for storage and instant accessibility. Slide them off and go diving, and upon your return each one clips back onto its bracket and simply slides back
along the track and locks into place, a fast-charging docking station for every unit ensuring that they’re ready to go again in no time. There’s even a GoCycle electric folding bike for anyone heading ashore – linked via iPad naturally, allowing access to pedal assist or full electric programs.
trouble-shooting techOn-board security includes a state-of-the-art gyro-stabilised thermal imaging camera. Mounted on a custom-made bracket on top of the navigation light for an uninterrupted 360-degree view, it’s so powerful that it can read a newspaper from half a kilometre away. On a more practical level, clear barriers designed with safety and aesthetics in mind are fitted to the flybridge to provide additional security for younger members of the family.
Despite a depth of engineering that even runs to remote gateway access, allowing the systems to be monitored or adjusted and any problems diagnosed from anywhere in the world, the total installation took just two months. Three weeks of the install was carried out at Landau UK’s base in Southampton, the following five weeks completed on location in Barcelona in order to accommodate the owner’s pressing schedule.

Under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), and other such regulations there is a statutory duty to assist any boat in distress and to save life. When a boat gets into trouble at sea the priority will always
be to look after the people on board, but once you and your crew are safe, the last thing you want to discover is a salvage claim is being made against you or your boat.
Having an understanding of the principles of salvage will help you avoid such a sting in the tail!
What is salvage?Salvage Laws have evolved from the philosophy that the protection of maritime property at sea is considered of sufficient importance that it should be encouraged by the courts through the offer of rewards to those who go to the assistance of others.
Under Salvage Law a person who recovers another person’s boat or cargo from danger at sea is entitled to a reward based on the value of the property saved.
This is considered fair to the boat owner and salvor based on the principle that a reasonable owner (or their insurer) who has avoided the total loss of their boat or other property through the intervention of a third party should be prepared to pay for the assistance offered,

damage to the environment n The service must be performed in tidal waters (including harbours)
Under salvage law, a person who recovers another person’s boat from danger at sea is entitled to a reward
To make a claim, the salvor must have performed the service in tidal waters, including harbours
Given that the reward is normally payable out of the value of the property saved, for a salvor to be entitled to a reward something of value must be saved! This is known as the ‘no cure, no pay’ principle.
Salvage in a reScue Situation Generally speaking, recreational boaters are happy to help each other out and it is unusual for those offering assistance to claim salvage. However, if you are worried about a claim for salvage being made, it is usually cheaper to agree a payment for assistance in advance rather than to leave it to be determined after the event.
If you’re not in imminent danger and the situation does not warrant calling the emergency services, you would probably be better off being up-front about fixing a price with the person offering assistance.
If danger is imminent, call the emergency services. HM Coastguard and the RNLI do not normally make claims for salvage. However there will be occasions where a boat is in imminent danger and salvage has to be accepted without an agreement on payment (ie the amount of any payment will be settled later), and therefore a skipper and salvor should be very clear on what is being agreed at the time.
Every situation is unique and there are a number of factors a skipper should take into account when considering the options: n Safety of people on boardn Proximity to hazardsn Weather conditionsn Current, tide and sea state n Potential for anchoring
If a boat is in distress, it’s unlikely the skipper will be able to arrange a written agreement, so a verbal agreement, witnessed by other crew members or individuals on board, of ‘salvage services’ upon the principle of ‘no cure, no pay’ should be offered.
Skippers should also consider trying to agree salvage subject to the terms of the Lloyd’s Open Form, which is a simple form of
salvage agreement and gives jurisdiction to determine the reward to Lloyd’s of London arbitrators, rather than the courts.
Salvage without prior agreementIf you find yourself subject to a salvage claim without prior agreement; for example if your boat has been salvaged without your knowledge after it has broken free of its moorings or any such circumstances where salvage is unavoidable, most insurance policies require immediate written notice of any accident or of any claim. No negotiations, payments, settlements, admissions or terminations of any claim should be made without the written consent of the insurers.
If a salvage claim arises after your boat has been saved, notify your insurers straight away and leave the negotiations to them.

Cold snapthe best way to winterise your boat is to use it – a boat
contains a multitude of systems that hate inactivity, particularly the engine. But if you really don’t fancy a winter on the water and you are set on putting your boat to bed
for the coldest months of the year, there are a few essential tasks that will help ensure it survives this dormant period. Don’t panic if you won’t have the time to do everything on this list: concentrate on winterising the engine, because it’s the part that will benefit the most from a little TLC at this time of the year.
1 First on the list is general engine cleaning and observation. Shine plenty of light, and use a mirror on a stick or a digital
camera to see under and behind things. Dry the bilges to prevent corrosion and, if necessary, paint them white to highlight any leaks and drips in the future.
2 Whether your boat is being hauled out for the winter or not, fill your fuel tank to prevent condensation, which in turn
prevents the growth of diesel bug.
3 Change the engine oil and replace the oil filter before leaving your boat for the winter. Leaving the old oil contaminated with
the acidic by-products of combustion inside the engine block will
shorten the engine’s life, and a neglected oil system will cause expensive damage. Also consider using flushing oil or a flushing additive during the oil change, which helps to remove even more of these contaminants.
4 Check the gearbox or outdrive oil and replace it if it looks cloudy or milky.
5 Most diesel engines use either raw water or keel cooling – both of which need attention when winterising. Raw water
systems require draining before leaving for the winter by closing the water inlet valve, or sea cock; disconnecting a hose from the circulating pump (unless there is a dedicated tap or plug); then refilling with a strong solution of fresh antifreeze. Run the engine to fully circulate the new solution. Simply draining the system is unlikely to remove all the water inside, which may then freeze and so cause damage over the winter.
6 Check the water pump impeller and consider replacing it when de-winterising in case the blades have deformed over
the winter. Keel cooling systems can be left alone providing they contain the correct water/antifreeze mixture. This can be checked using a strength tester available from marinas and good car spares outlets. Note that antifreeze has a limited life and if it has to be replaced then this is a good time to replace any suspect hoses. Keep the old hoses as emergency replacements.
7 Remove the air intake filter and block the intake with an oily rag to prevent rust inside; then do the same for the exhaust.
Squirt a little oil into the intake and turn over the engine (without starting it) to distribute it over the cylinder walls. Be sure to place a warning about the blocked intake on the engine control panel to prevent anyone turning over the engine in your absence.
8 Where possible, remove the batteries and keep them warm and dry over the winter, fully charged or topped up at least
every four to six weeks. Batteries left uncharged for long periods may need to be replaced completely. If you’re unable to remove the batteries or if the boat is staying on its mooring, leave them fully topped up and regularly recharged, because full batteries are less likely to freeze in sub-zero temperatures.
9 Relax or remove all belts and protect the drive wheels. Rust on these can chew up a belt very quickly in the new season.
10 If you’re taking the boat out of the water, make sure it is angled bow upwards slightly to enable rain water to run off
immediately from covers, decks and cockpit.
11 Covers should keep water out, but remember to allow air to circulate. A proper through-draught will prevent
condensation, which leads to dry rot, mould and corrosion (especially if left for more than a single season).
12 The internal freshwater supply system also requires attention. Drain the entire system including tank, pump, calorifier, water
filters and all taps – especially shower mixers. Look for any areas where water could still be trapped in pipes. Plastic piping is less vulnerable than copper piping, but rigid unions can still be damaged by freezing temperatures.
13 If you have a water-based central heating system using antifreeze then the same checks carried out to the keel
cooled engine system should be applied. If the system doesn’t use antifreeze then it should be drained as for the freshwater supply.
14 Remove any foodstuffs that may be damaged by the frost or attract unwanted visitors such as mice and rats.

15 Store all linen, clothing, blankets, curtains and other soft furnishings ashore – washed and dry. Prop the fridge door
open – mould will form in less than a week if it’s left closed and you’ll return to a foul-smelling mess that’s impossible to eradicate. Ensure through-ventilation below deck. Leave cupboards and drawers open, prop up bunk cushions and leave under-berth locker lids open. Your aim to make sure that fresh air can get into every conceivable nook and cranny.
16 Ensure deck-installed electronics have tight-fitting covers, and consider spraying behind electronics with water-
repellent silicone. Check your navigation lights are still serviceable.
17 If you are leaving your boat afloat, check all through-hull fittings for leaks and corrosion. Don’t forget to check your
stern glands and repack with grease if appropriate.
18 Make a list of what you have done to winterise your boat this year so that you remember what to reverse in the
spring, and leave signs all around the boat so that no-one accidentally operates a winterised system!

Every day around our coast fishermen take to sea, sometimes with a crew, other times single handed. Sadly, the current rules and regulations are forcing many to take risks to earn a living by going to sea in inclement weather, and many feel
they have no choice but to go out to work in conditions that they once would have considered extremely unsafe. Thankfully, there are people – both staff and volunteers – who are committed to ending preventable loss of life at sea; the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). In 2014 alone, the RNLI’s lifeboat crews and lifeguards went to the rescue of over 10,000 people. It is the RNLI and MCA who respond when a vessel gets into trouble, and every

time a lifeboat is launched or a search and recuse (SAR) helicopter takes to the air, the crews must be prepared to cope with a multitude of challenging and dangerous situations, which is why exercises are so important. Mainly volunteers, these lifeboat crew often fit their training around full-time jobs, and are on-call 24/7. Recently we joined Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat on several exercises to see first-hand how crews prepare for such an incident.

Shoreham coast. While we waited for the helicopter to arrive, Smith told us how and why radio procedure is so important when working with helicopters and a casualty: “Valuable time can be saved by following procedure and, if a vessel is lost, sectored searches take place to locate those in the water.”
Paul Fisher from the RNLI Operations Department explained the use of radios in more detail: “It is so important that crews are trained how to transmit, while being constructive with their comments to

all involved – especially the casualty, who may well be in a situation where they need support to reassure them that all is fine and help is at hand. Radio comms between lifeboat and casualty are important but not always possible. It can help to guide the lifeboat to the casualty and inform the lifeboat crew of any possible hazards around them such as fishing nets or lines still in the water.”
All Weather Lifeboats (ALBs) and Atlantic 85 lifeboats all have VHF and 121.5MHz direction-finding radio fitted. The usual working channel is 16: the international distress and calling channel on 156.8MHz. Channel 0 is HM Coastguard’s private channel and their consent must be gained prior to publishing the frequency.
“It is normally the mechanic who is the radio operator on the ALB Lifeboat,” Paul explained. “However, the majority of crew are radio trained. The RNLI takes crew training very seriously and their training centre at Poole provides support, along with their mobile units that visit lifeboat stations.”
Standard international radio voice procedures are used in all communications, but there can be situations when those being rescued do not know these, or don’t even have a working radio on board. Mobile phones are not the most proven means of communication and are easily lost in an emergency situation, so should never be relied on.
The RNLI advises all fishermen (and recreational sailors) to undertake one of the available courses that will train them in what to do if disaster strikes, and how to follow the procedures set out by the RNLI to make their rescue swifter and safer.
Helicopter trainingIt was not long before H104 – an AgustaWestland AW139, a twin-engine helicopter popular with coastguard agencies globally – appeared, having taken off from Lee on Solent. “We really have to make the most of these exercises because they aren’t a regular occurrence.” said Coxswain Smith. “Lee is currently the busiest Maritime SAR helicopter in the UK and it isn’t uncommon for exercises to be cancelled at the last minute due to a shout.”
Mark Blatcher, the Shoreham Lifeboat Mechanic, works with Second Cox Simon Tugwell to get those onboard involved in the exercise, which can include several incidents. “Our training now is with the aim of getting as many crew members acceptable for the All Weather Lifeboat,” Bletcher explained. “With an inshore lifeboat we are a busy station, especially in the summer. First-hand opportunities such as this must be taken.”
The helicopter arrived out of the dark and positioned itself very low over the Tamar, dropping its winchman onto the deck. A brief discussion relating to the exercise was agreed, and the first crew member was winched up. This was followed by a medi-vac in a stretcher, then a search for a casualty in the water.
While all this was happening, Smith was at the helm keeping a steady track at a fast speed, with the helicopter to the stern, while in constant radio communication with the pilot. “Safety is of the utmost importance for all involved, and the relevant protective gear is now standard. It was calm tonight! However, it puts things into a different perspective when we are out in a force +9. That is why we do these exercises to the book,” he told us.
Exercises over, and Enid Collett was returned to the boathouse. A crew briefing and the all-important “thank you” to the helicopter crew was followed by a wash-down of the lifeboat, fuel checks and a reassuring, “We are now ready for service,” to the Coastguard.
Our fishermen, often at sea when others are not, need to know that these services are there to help them when needed. The national press does at times have to report the sad outcome of incidents; but seeing first-hand how The RNLI and MCA work together it proves how important such joint exercises are.

Make no mistake, the Grand Cherokee is a large vehicle by anyone’s standards. If you’re in the market for an SUV with real road presence then the current offering from iconic off-road manufacturer Jeep has to be on the
shortlist. If, on the other hand, you’re after something that you can thread through tight city streets and park in small spaces then you might need to look elsewhere. Certainly the Jeep can handle city driving: its smooth automatic gearbox makes pootling around town a pleasure with that usually high 4x4 driving position affording great visibility, and once on the open road you really get a sense of what this SUV is all about – in fact there’s very little this accomplished vehicle can’t deal with.
In North America, by far its largest sales market, the Grand Cherokee feels positively compact compared to the behemoth offerings from Dodge and Ford with their iconic F-150 (the best-selling vehicle in the US). In the UK and Europe, however, the priorities are a little different. Less concerned with overall size, particularly on our cramped streets, European high-end SUV buyers focus more on the luxury aspects of the purchase – a marketplace
forever dominated by the ubiquitous Range Rover and fiercely contested by the likes of BMW and Mercedes. To succeed here the Jeep has measure up to some very stiff competition.
A closer lookAll Grand Cherokees come well equipped, with climate control and automatic wipers as standard, although most will avoid the entry-level Lareno (with its 188bhp variant of the 3.0-litre V6 diesel) in favour of higher-spec models. The Limited adds most of the options potential buyers look for, including leather upholstery, electrically adjustable and heated front seats, parking sensors, rear-view camera and the powered opening tailgate.
Move up to the Overland and you gain blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control and a sunroof. Our Summit-spec review car also benefitted from built-in Blu-ray

Grandest Cherokee
player and headrest-mounted screens for rear passengers and an excellent Harmon Kardon audio upgrade – a massive 19-speaker system that’s sure to drown out the kids in the back and the road noise that creeps into the cabin – and with ample leg and head room in the rear seats for the tallest of passengers the Grand Cherokee is a comfortable place for long-distance journeys too.
The boot space is very generous, if not quite class-leading, with a high and level floor offering 782 litres (extending to 1,554 litres) and an array of useful storage options. It also covers a full-sized spare wheel, which accounts for the extra load height. In Summit-spec the Harmon Kardon audio upgrade includes a large boot-mounted subwoofer which does rob a bit of the available space.
Climb into the front and you’re welcomed by deep comfortable seats, leather trim and brushed aluminium with chrome detailing. In keeping with the competition, the dash sports a large colour touchscreen that controls most of the vehicle options, with only the climate control and heated screen buttons beneath. Although easy to use and comprehensive, the touchscreen interface lacks a little of the finesse of BMW’s iDrive and offerings from Range Rover and Mercedes. The interior also throws in a couple of Jeep quirks – a single multi-control indicator stalk and foot-operated parking brake control.
Move down the centre console and you find the comprehensive
Selec Terrain controls for the 4x4, differentials and ride-height and a rather traditional-looking drive selector. It might look a little outdated, but rest assured it now controls a very modern ZF-derived 8-speed automatic complete with wheel-mounted paddle-shift.
Available across the whole range, this new gearbox offers improved acceleration and shifting and goes a long way to explaining the reduction in both emissions and consumption. Combined with the updates to the V6 diesel engine and the addition of an Eco mode, the Grand Cherokee now delivers 37.7mpg on a combined cycle – more on a par with its European rivals.
the driveThe new auto gearbox does a great job of keeping the engine in the strongest part of the rev-range and affords effortless and relaxed cruising. The only criticism of the gearbox was a slight reluctance to kick-down when overtaking – easily overcome by a quick tap on the steering wheel-mounted manual paddles, although once in manual
mode the gearbox stays there until you put it back into full-auto. Push harder and engine noise does start to intrude on the cabin, but for the most part the Grand Cherokee is a very civil, comfortable and quiet place to be.
Ride comfort has always been a strong selling point of the Grand Cherokee, with the American market placing more emphasis on this than overall handling. The entry-level Lareno and the Limited models feature tried and trusted steel spring suspension – fine on smooth or slightly broken tarmac, but prone to a lot of body movements and some jarring over larger potholes. Move further up the range and all models gain the higher-spec air springs and a marked increase in body control and ride comfort; however, bear in mind that the Grand Cherokee remains a large, heavy and tall vehicle.
Venture off road and the excellent Selec Terrain system comes into effect. Jeep have built their reputation on tough all-terrain ability and the current Grand Cherokee doesn’t disappoint. Offering complete control over the front and rear differentials, power delivery and distribution and overall ride height, the comprehensive system governing the full-time four-wheel-drive ensures the current Grand Cherokee not only lives up to its predecessor’s pedigree but also holds its own against the European competition. In truth, most vehicles in this market sector will spend precious little time in the mud, but Jeep owners are more likely to take to the hills than many of their peers.
Living with a grand CherokeeThe Grand Cherokee is not a cheap vehicle – our review car with its various added options comes in at £54,140 – but, spec-for-spec, you do get more for your money than you would with the likes of BMW, Range Rover and Mercedes. That said, despite great strides forward in build quality and styling, the Grand Cherokee does still fall behind the best of the European offerings and depreciation remains a big concern. None of the luxury SUVs can ever be considered cheap to own or run and it’s true that Jeep have gone out of their way to make the current Grand Cherokee as competitive in this respect as possible, but unfortunately potential buyers seem more concerned with image and prestige than they do overall running costs. Of course if cost is no obstacle, you could plump for the thoroughly bonkers SRT8 with its 6.4-litre V8 petrol and sub 5-second 0-60 sprint – you’ll probably need to be the heir to a petroleum company to run it though, with real-world mpg falling well below the claimed 20mpg and emissions of 327g/km.
Marina’s opinionIt’s easy to play the safe option when choosing a luxury SUV – Range Rover has the image, Mercedes the technology and BMW the efficiency. But if you want to stand out from the crowd and go your own way then why not take a closer look at the Grand Cherokee… You might just be surprised how good it is.

Join in thE FunThe marina has a vibrant social scene and plays an important part in the local community. The team recently held two fundraising events to raise money for worthy causes. Manager of Cobb’s Quay Marina, Dave Wilson, recently organised a very popular fishing competition at the marina. Now in its seventh year, the Open Species Fishing Competition is run annually and raises money for UK sailing rehabilitation charity, Heroes on the Water. The event raised an impressive £650 for the charity. For the second year running, Cobb’s Quay Marina teamed up with the Poole Bay Small Boat Angling Club and the competition saw 19 boats out on the water, reeling in, photographing and then releasing as many species of fish as possible.
A group of berth holders also recently took part in a fundraising golf tournament in aid of local charity, Julia’s House. 24 keen golfers took part in The ‘Tyder Cup’, which was organised by Bob Miles, a berth holder at Cobb’s Quay Marina, and Chas Kirkby, Dockmaster at Cobb’s Quay Marina. Bob’s wife and daughter in law both work at Julia’s House, a children’s hospice charity in Dorset dedicated to helping life-limited children and their families across the county. The tournament raised £2,000 for the hospice, a fantastic achievement.

It’s very beautiful in the summer – when the small islands around the Clyde are lit up by glittering sunshine – but it’s even more beautiful in the winter. In the south of England talk this time of year always turns to the likelihood of a white Christmas (usually nil), but this far north you can take in snow-capped hills and mountain peaks in clear view as you go about your sailing. Add the cleansing whiteness of ground frost or drifting snow, and you have the perfect white Christmas.
Some particularly stunning locations to sail in Scotland include Portavadie with its world class facilities, and the tranquillity of Lochranza, so hoist that sail and off you go!

The Clipper Race is offering an exciting business opportunity with two of its former racing yachts and is even willing to support anyone interested in purchasing its Clipper 68s, tried and tested veterans of ocean racing, training, development and corporate events.
“We’re offering a complete package inclusive of sails, spares, marketing assets and we can even consider finance terms,” said Clipper Ventures COO Jeremy Knight. “These yachts are designed to earn money and are an ideal platform for corporate sailing, adventure sailing and big-yacht sail training.

The 68-foot yachts were specially designed by Ed Dubois for the Clipper Race and came into service in 2005. They were replaced by the new Clipper 70 design in the 2013-14 edition and have been used for training, development and events for the past three years.

Introduced in 2005, the Bavaria 30 Cruiser marked a turning point in sail boat production from Bavaria. Gone were the dark woods and slightly gloomy interiors of previous models, giving way to lighter wood colours and more hatches and hull windows to give much brighter interiors. Designed by J&J Design, the 30 Cruiser proved to be an instant hit with boat buyers and has been one of Bavaria’s best-selling models since its introduction.

The Sealine S23 is a practical and popular entry-level cruiser introduced and sold in the UK in late 2001/early 2002. Predominantly sold with a Volvo Penta KAD32 (170hp) diesel inboard engine (with the later models supplied with a Volvo Penta D3), petrol options were also available but the diesel option has always been more sought after. Upon entry through the transom gate the cockpit arrangement allows for the seating of six people, two at the helm and four around the rear cockpit table.
