Greetings Fellow Mustangs:

This is our 30th year!!! November 10th, 1985

Captain Robert E. Richter had a dream to establish The Marine Corps Mustang Association, Inc. that

dream can to fruition with the help of 183 Charter

Members. Therefore today, we continue to enjoy the

benefits of Bob’s dream and carry on the tradition.

We consummated this dream with the installation of

a commemorative plaque at the Semper Fidelis

Memorial Park at the United States Marine Corps

Museum on July 22, 2015. The ceremony was well

attended to include Chartered Members and a

statement from the Founder. The website reflects a photograph of the plaque.

This month, August 2015 marks the eleventh month of my presidency. It’s been a

challenging ride but with the assistance of the Officers, Directors and Business Manager

there have been a few “bumps” and the business of the organization has gone smoothly.

We currently have a full Board of Directors; I have appointed Advisory Committees;

pursuant to Sections 6-12, 6-13 of the By-laws; with the task to research and counsel the

Board of Directors business matters so that a solid and professional decision is

accomplished. This ensures the vitality and growth of The Mustang Association. A

Director chairs each Advisory Committee.

The website of the Mustang Association is being totally renovated. The Business

Manager continues to work diligently on our website and essential information is

available.

The Board of Directors and I are committed to address the challenges before us. We are

serious about moving the Association forward and invite you to participate; serve as an

Officer, Director, committee member and more importantly recruit.

The Founding Fathers have set the standards and the Core Values of this elite

organization. It is now our turn to carry on this legacy. “Continue to March”

Semper Fidelis

Ernest

Boot Camp Comrades June 1956, Parris Island, SC 2nd Recruit Training Regiment, C Company, Platoon 193 was formed: In that platoon

were Philip H. Ray and Ernest E. Johnson, they didn't know each other and had clear idea as to what they were in

for. They knew that if they survived this training they would become a United States Marine.

Some fifty years later, at a Marine Corps Mustang Association Muster we met again and with much effort tried to

recall ... "where we know each other from?" Somehow I overheard Phil, in a conversation with another Mustang say

something to the effect of "Parris Island, Platoon 193...BINGO!!!

Business Manager: It has been almost a year since I assumed the Business Manager position from Roger Speeg and his deputy Dwayne “Dup” Dupeire. They were a hard act to follow, but I have been giving it my best effort to keep up the standard. I would like to give you the state of the organization from the business end. Website: We have made a capital investment of over $7,000 toward a new website. Our old website served the organization for perhaps 15 years. It was state-of-the-art when it launched, but it has become old and inflexible for what we need today. Last fall, we were the target of two malicious hacks from Romania. We were able to have the webmaster, Matt Carter recover and restore our site without serious damage or loss of data. Coincidental to this, was the Board of Directors’ initiative to update our Association and make it relevant to our current membership and attract our younger generation of Mustang officers. The Board is addressing this is through a process called “SWOT” Analysis. This process is the means by which we will develop our strategic vision for the future of our Association. This effort is being spearheaded by Col Eddie Ray and championed by our President, Ernest Johnson. I will not go into the details and status of this ambitious planning initiative since Eddie Ray will be providing us with an update in future Mestengo articles. Here is what our new website will offer: 1. On-Line Payment option. Renew

memberships, pay Muster events, contribute to the General Fund or Semper Fi Fund, or purchase MCMA PX items.

2. Member’s Area. Enhanced to provide current services and access to future Membership Directories. Also, members will be able to update their membership information, change of address, phone numbers, etc.

3. Join MCMA. On-line membership application, processing and payment.

4. ALL Hands Email Blast. This will be our way to reach out to all members who have email addresses, for delivery of time sensitive information, news, and general event updates. This is a bulk email function which we will use judiciously so as not to saturate your in-box with clutter. Please keep an eye on

your “Junk” folder in case it arrives in that folder.

5. Fully secure servers and back-up against cyber-attacks.

6. Cell phone/tablet compatibility. Allows easy viewing and use of payment functions on cell phones and tablets which access the internet.

7. Ease of navigation. The website was designed for simplicity and ease of use. We have decluttered the pages and incorporated a powerful, yet user-friendly browser.

8. Social Media (under development). Social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Together We Served, etc., will be leveraged for our exposure to the membership and the public. As we begin using these platforms, we will link them to our website.

These are only the public facing portion of our website. The administrative site is also pumped up with more bells and whistles, all focused on supporting the membership. This website is flexible enough to modernize and easily conform with emerging web technologies. I would like everyone to know up front. These newly incorporated technologies are as much for the current membership as they will be for the newer members we begin to attract. Our younger generation of Marines (Gen X and emerging Gen Y). These people are very tech savvy. Their time is filled with so much information by new technologies, they have little time to sit behind a computer...they want information at their finger tips and they want it in a hurry. We need to take advantage of these technologies so we can keep up with these young hard chargers and get them into our ranks. I think we have the platform and social media links to make that happen! OK, I am off the soap-box. I am running out of space to continue on with the state of our Association. I think it is something I can spread out and feature in future Mestengos. Right now, I need to bring up a subject which may not set well with some of our members, but must be addressed. Membership. Our membership has not been as good as it should be. For current members, I think this is due in part from members moving or just forgetting to pay their dues. We have offered up reinstatement to members who have been delinquent for year(s)...simply pay the current years dues and be fully reinstated.

This has been meeting with some success. The second is with new members such as newly appointed Warrant Officers and Commissioned Lieutenants. These young officers can PCS up to two times following the Basic School. By the time we mail them the first year’s renewal notice, we lost them. This is exactly why our website is critical to our survival. These members should be able to update membership on the go, on time, and on their cell phones! With luck, we will begin to grow our numbers. Cost. Our revenues have been largely dependent on membership dues, contributions to the General Fund, and our annual Mustang Musters. Sadly, our attendance commitment to this upcoming Muster is still not where it should be or once was. That said, we are faced with some difficult choices. It has become necessary for us to consider discontinue printed Mestengos and the printed 2015 Membership Directory. Mestengo: Last Mestengo was mailed to all members at a substantial cost. Over 50 Mestengos have been returned to the National Headquarters as undeliverable for various reasons. This issue of the Mestengo will be posted on the website, with limited distribution to the membership. This may also be the last printed Mestengo, as we will be moving toward a near paperless medium in an effort to curb rising costs. Membership Directory: The 2015 Membership directory will be available for print or download directly from our website. I will print a limited number of Directories and will have them available for very limited distribution. Aside from these cited issues, I think the future of our organization looks bright. At our thirty-year mark, we are turning the page to welcome and embrace a new generation of Marine warrior members. The future of our Association will soon be in their hands! I Look forward to seeing you all at the Muster in Jacksonville, Florida!

Semper Fidelis! Tony Cerrillo

E. M. “Nick” Russell, R-3142 MCMA Board of Directors

We need your help

I would like to introduce myself to all of you mustangs

out there. I am Edward M Russell JR. a new board

member. I go by the name of Nick, it's a long story. I

was not elected but appointed to take over a two-year

term of someone who had left. At the time I was

appointed, the Association needed board members, and

there was a plea for the same. After discussing it with

one other board members who is a personal friend of

mine, I decided to throw my hat in the ring. I personally

knew they were looking for younger people than I, but I

volunteered anyway. new member applications for the

board were not being received. I am 80 years old, in

pretty good health and I belong to many organizations.

I have an old saying that I came up with years ago and

it goes like this. “The only difference between the

people that do, and the people that don't, are the people

that do.” I believe if I can make the time to be a board

member, I believe you can too. This year, we already

have openings for two new board members. I sincerely

hope that some of you reading this message will stand

up and be counted. The Marine Corps Mustang

Association is one-of-a-kind, as we are. We really need

to keep our traditions, history and our love of Corps

going for the next generation and hopefully for the

generation after that. Please give your sincere thoughts

on becoming a new board member of this wonderful

organization. I have had a wonderful time at my last

muster and a great time at our retreat last month. It is so

wonderful to meet my fellow Marines and shoot the

bull after being retired for 42 years. I know you will

also have a wonderful time, If you do the same. Please

feel free to call me at any time if there is anything I can

do for you. My home number is area code 843-524-

5577. As any Marine, I am always on call.

God love you all & Semper Fidelis!

Nick
