For those of you who don’t know them, singer/songwriter Robyn Hitchcock and poet/comedian John Hegley have long and honourable performance histories alongside their substan-tial recorded and published output. They share an ability to produce compelling, surreal and comedic work on stage. It’s bound to be an incredible evening of entertainment here at the Marine Theatre.
Robyn explains a little more about the show...
‘Silhouetted like tiny hieroglyphs against the flaming horizon, we will unpack our music, humour and philosophy in the Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis as chilly spring grazes the eternal coast. The Jurassic Coast is a portal to eternity, where the strata of fossilised time intersects with the ocean, the mother and eraser of all.
Tickets will remain valid if the world ends before the show. But if time begins to reverse before the gig, the matter is outside our hands.’

In this unique interactive workshop the author, historian and former Sunday Times journalist Christopher Lloyd embarks on an epic journey in a bid to connect the dots of the past. Using story-telling techniques borrowed from Ancient Greece, he presents 20 key moments in the history of the planet, life and people, using a series of everyday objects. Watch the past and science get stitched back together as the key themes of big history reveal themselves through interactive audience participa-tion that dovetails the growth of human civilisations with evolutionary biology and modern science.
My 8 year old son has just returned home from hearing Christo-pher speak in Bath today. When I asked him if it was interest-ing his reply was “I can’t tell you how interesting as I haven’t a word that can describe it, but it was beyond awesome!”
The backdrop to this amazing show is the world’s biggest book. 2 metres high and nearly 8 metres long, this is a giant version of Chris’s amazing Wallbook. The book features more than 1,000 pictures and captions that tell the story of the planet from the beginning of time.
Do you know your ammonites from your belemnites? Which fossil hunter did what, when, and how? Where on the Jurassic Coast would you find different kinds of fossils? Just how old is old?
Test yourself and see whose brain is fresh and whose has already fossilised!

We’re very pleased to welcome back award-winning photographer and popular rural touring presenter Ben Osborne to the Marine Theatre with the solo version of his show ‘Jurassic Journey’. Specially commissioned by Artsreach and their sister organisation in Devon, Villages In Action, ‘Jurassic Journey’ is an acclaimed audio-visual presentation celebrating the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Showcasing his breathtaking photography, video and sound recordings, the show also features specially commissioned music (composed by Dorset’s Sammy Hurden), poetry (written by Devon-based Matt Harvey) and some engaging characters created by local artist/sculptor Lal Hitchcock. Commentary, audio-visual sequences, soundscapes and humour will create a richly entertaining evening for anyone interested in what happens when four artists take a close (and occasionally sideways) look at a coast near you. Catch the accompanying exhibition of the four artists’ work ‘Deep Time’ the previous weekend at The Malthouse as part of the Earth Festival.

Ben Osborne presents:
The NODA award winning Lyme Regis Operatic Society return once more to the Marine Theatre, this time with Gilbert and Sullivan’s masterpiece “The Yeomen of the Guard”. In the same vein as last year’s LROS hit “Me and My Girl”, this is a classic story of girl meets boy and their battle against adversity.
Gilbert and Sullivan mix this with their love of parody. Everyone and everything gets a pasting, from Verdi and Meyerbeer to the government and social etiquette. Expect the usual array of eccentric Gilbertian characters and beautiful music all set, in this Diamond Jubilee year, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The piece will be accompanied by a live orchestra conducted by award winning musical director, Nick Lawrence.
After last year’s sell out production early booking is advised.

King Pleasure and the Biscuit BoysWhen they first visited the Marine Theatre a couple of years ago they raised the roof! Hugely talented and entertaining, with a loyal following these guys grab you from the first number and do not let go until the last.
King Pleasure & The Biscuit Boys present a breathtaking mix of Kansas City Jazz and Blues in a truly exhilarating, swinging, non-stop live stage performance. Looking like they just stepped straight out of a 1940s black-and-white B movie, this inimitable six-piece delivers a shot of pure and authentic Jazz and Blues from a bygone era, when Swing was King.
The main man, King Pleasure, is unique. He sings, he romps, he roars, he relentlessly drives the band forward and clearly has such a ball as he does it. Bands are rarely blessed with such a huge personality, and the bonus comes with his sensational tenor sax playing.
With thousands of shows and numerous albums under their crown they have enjoyed huge critical acclaim from both the press and their many fans worldwide. Come on down for a foot-stompin’ night of swing!

Local favourite Stompin’ Dave’s performance at The Marine Theatre last summer gained him a rave review from The Daily Telegraph, who said he was ‘A master...a formidable musician and a true original.’ Since then Dave has appeared here with The Whitetop Mountaineers, featuring old-time musicians from Virginia, USA, and with Sublime Folk on Saint Patrick’s Day.
Now Dave will take centre stage with a show featuring many aspects of his musicality. Expect piano, guitar, banjo, fiddle, and Dave’s trademark flatfoot dancing. This show will be a delicious mix of American roots music styles including bluegrass, old-time, blues, and boogie woogie. Described as “One of the world’s greatest performers” by Maverick Magazine, Bridport-based Dave is winner of the FOAOTMAD old-time banjo contest 2011 and has performed at Glastonbury Festival to name but one of many.

Recreating the unique spirit of 1940s radio plays and brilliantly evoking a dinner-jacketed age of casual imperialism and stiff upper lips, The Fitzrovia Radio Hour’s brand new show comes to the Marine Theatre fresh from three critically-acclaimed Lon-don residencies, and two sell-out years at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Performed with cut-glass theatricality blending homage and satire, Fitzrovia mixes the chauvinist attitudes of 1940s Britain with sharp contemporary humour to produce a heady comic cocktail. Throughout the plays, sound effects are created live: a Bakelite hairdryer imitates a heating torch, a desk fan becomes an aeroplane, and multiple types of cabbage help to stage a fight scene. Rippingly good fun!
‘Absolutely spiffing show that recreates the innocent, clipped, Bulldog Drummond spirit of Forties live radio drama, with a skilled company stepping up to their retro mics to unfold ripping yarns. A Joy.’ **** Daily Telegraph

It all started so long ago that it is impossible to remember when. There were no stories at that time.
One day a woman, called Mazanendaba, set out to search for sto-ries. She hunted up and down mountains and through thick bush, asking the help of friendly and fierce animals, until wise Elephant told her where to find the secret of wondrous tales to tell.
Featuring African and English words and song, wood and wire puppets and the sweet, sweet sounds of music played on tradi-tional African instruments.
You can also stay after the performance to play music, meet the puppets and chat!
