Welcome to the Fossil Festival
the coast around Lyme Regis and Charmouth is one of the most famous places in the world
for fossils and we celebrate that each year with our fossil festival. this year’s theme is particularly ambitious; for the first time we look at our coast in a global context. time, tide and tectonics: explores the forces deep within the earth that have controlled how the rocks formed and how life evolved along the Jurassic Coast.time: our rocks are 200 million years old and date back to the Lower Jurassic period but their full significance can only be appreciated in a global context.tides: the moon formed from a mighty collision very early in our earth’s formation and that governs our tides and the seasons of the year today, 4,500 million years later.tectonics: the formation of the rocks and the evolution of life is governed by the mighty forces deep within the earth including huge volcanic eruptions that drive climate change and mass extinction. But extinction is life’s great invigorator, the only problem for us is that it takes about 5 million years to happen. We invite you to think about that.

Geologists’ AssociationFor everyone interested in the story of the Earth Since its formation in 1858 the GA has actively promoted the study of geology to all who
are interested in the past, present and future of the natural world. It welcomes everyone, regardless of the level of their knowledge.
It organises field trips both in the UK and overseas and holds monthly lecture meetings as well as an Annual Conference and the Festival of Geology. Its publications, the Proceedings of the Geologists’ Association and the GA Magazine are widely acclaimed. The GA provides a voice for geologists on matters of national importance.

Friday 28th april The Marine Theatre5pm In the beginning….Planet Earth 101 Kirstin Lemon & Clive mitchell of the British geological survey the tectonic time team, Lemon & mitchell, from the British geological survey take us on a time voyage from the early days of planet earth through billions of years of geological history up to the formation of the Jurassic Coast; Join us for a geological journey that you’ll never forget.6pm The ebb and flow of the tides of Dorset Dr simon Boxall, associate Professor in oceanography, Univ. of southampton. the moon is important in driving the tides of the ocean but it is not the only force. Discover why we get tidal flows, why there are spring and neap tides and why the tides in Dorset and Hampshire are particularly unusual.7pm The Dynamic Coast of Dorset Professor Denys Brunsden this lecture shows the relationship between the processes of erosion and deposition at the interface between the earth, atmosphere and ocean and describes the nature of beach dynamics, cliff erosion and land management. it will include a full explanation of how the shore at Lyme Regis was studied and designed to stabilize the beach and cliffs and ensure greater safety for those who live close to the sea.8pm Tsunamis in the UK: are we at risk? millie Watts, University of southampton. one autumn day, 8200 years ago, the northern shoreline of the UK was inundated by a massive tsunami, spawned from the collapse of the Norwegian Continental shelf. the shetland islands were inundated with a 25 m wave, and the scottish coastline preserves the record of a 5 m tsunami. this lecture discusses the research being done to assess possible risks to the UK.
