Working with the Maritime SectorWorking with the Maritime Sector

- working in partnership with colleagues in Scotland to develop a progression framework for the maritime sector (from school level through to degree level)

- a longstanding partnership with MSA who sit on SQA's Sector Panel for Engineering, Science and Maths  (meets twice a year - gives advice and guidance on the team's  operational plans and developments for the future)

- and similar with the MCA - Maritime Coastguard Agency (for whom SQA manages their Certificates of Competency (exams)     - about to launch a brand new 'Maritime Skills for Work ' course at SCQF level 5

Working with the Maritime SectorWorking with the Maritime Sector

- this leads into a new NC in Shipping and Maritime Operations at SCQF level 6 (being delivered for the first time this year)

- on the merchant navy side we have HNC/D Awards in Nautical Science (well established) and Marine Engineering (currently under development) leading on to a PDA in Marine Management

- on the seafishing side working with them to finalise a new HNC and PDA in Commercial Seafishing and refresh their Seafishing MA

(so the whole framework in Scotland is finally coming together with marine quals from level 5 up to level 9)

1) Maritime employment, environmental and health & safety practices 2 credits

2) Vessel ropework, anchoring & mooring operations

5 credits

3) Securing a vessel for passage 3 credits

4) Vessel construction & stability 5 credits

5) Assist with a vessels navigational watch 3 credits

1. Additional pathways are under development to cover seafishing and tugs

2. An additional unit (or units) on maritime safety & survival is/are under development (non STCW 95)

All AOs going through this so very much dependent on Ofqual timescales
