Lets read Mark 5:1-13 4. Mark 5:1, Gerasenes Mark 5:1 And they came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes. 5. The Bible Knowledge Commentary 2. the cure of the gerasene demoniac (5:120) (matt. 8:2834; luke 8:2639) a. A description of the demoniac (5:15) 5:1. Jesus and His disciples went to the east side of the lake (Sea of Galilee) into the region of the Gerasenes. Greek manuscripts are divided on the precise location involved, citing three names: Gadarenes (Matt. 8:28), Gergesenes (from Origen), and Gerasenes. (See comments on Luke 8:26). Reliable evidence favors the name Gerasenes which probably referred to the small town Gersa (modern Khersa) located on the lakes eastern shore. Most of its inhabitants were Gentiles (cf. Answer: The Bible gives some examples of people possessed or influenced by demons. From these examples we can find some symptoms of demonic influence and gain insight as to how a demon possesses someone. King Saul, after rebelling against the LORD, was troubled by an evil spirit (1 Samuel 16:14-15; 18:10-11; 19:9-10) with the apparent effect of a depressed mood and an increased desire to kill David. Thus, there is a wide variety of possible symptoms of demon possession, such as a physical impairment that cannot be attributed to an actual physiological problem, a personality change such as depression or aggression, supernatural strength, immodesty, antisocial behavior, and perhaps the ability to share information that one has no natural way of knowing. It is important to note that nearly all, if not all, of these characteristics may have other explanations, so it is important not to label every depressed person or epileptic individual as demonpossessed. On the other hand, Western cultures probably do not take 18. These may include a refusal to forgive (2 Corinthians 2:10-11) and the belief in and spread of false doctrine, especially concerning Jesus Christ and His atoning work (2 Corinthians 11:3-4, 13-15; 1 Timothy 4:1-5; 1 John 4:1-3). Concerning the involvement of demons in the lives of Christians, the apostle Peter is an illustration of the fact that a believer can be influenced by the devil (Matthew 16:23) [Acts 5] . Some refer to Christians who are under a strong demonic influence as being demonized, but never is there an example in Scripture of a believer in Christ being possessed by a demon. Most theologians believe that a Christian cannot be possessed because he has the Holy Spirit abiding within (2 Corinthians 1:22; 5:5; 1 Corinthians 6:19), and the Spirit of God would not share residence with a demon. 19. If Judas case is representative, he opened his heart to evilin his case by his greed (John 12:6). So it may be possible that if one allows his heart to be ruled by some habitual sin, it becomes an invitation for a demon to enter. From missionaries experiences, demon possession also seems to be related to the worship of heathen idols and the possession of occult materials. Scripture repeatedly relates idol worship to the actual worship of demons (Leviticus 17:7; Deuteronomy 32:17; Psalm 106:37; 1 Corinthians 10:20) [1 Corinthians 10:19-20] , so it should not be surprising that involvement with idolatry could lead to demon possession. Based on the above scriptural passages and some of the experiences of missionaries, we can conclude that many people open their lives up to demon involvement through the embracing of some sin or through cultic involvement (either knowingly or unknowingly). Examples may include immorality, drug/alcohol abuse that alters ones state of consciousness, rebellion, bitterness, and transcendental meditation. 20. This being the case, Satan, thinking he is accomplishing his own purposes, is actually accomplishing Gods good purposes, as in the case of Judas betrayal. Some people develop an unhealthy fascination with the occult and demonic activity. This is unwise and unbiblical. If we pursue God, if we are clothing ourselves with His armor and relying upon His strength (Ephesians 6:10-18), we have nothing to fear from the evil ones, for God rules over all! Jesus may have allow it because their time was not yet. They will go there after the Millennial Kingdom, but not yet. 25. Lets read Mark 5:14-20 26. Mark 5:15, Behavior Of A Saved Man Mark 5:15 They came to Jesus and observed the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind What was his behavior after being saved? Was he barking like a dog, slain in the spirit, falling down and thrashing around, uncontrollably laughing, or speaking in not understandable gibberish? No, nonsensical behavior is characteristic of someone who is not controlled by the Holy Spirit of God. 1 Corinthians 14:23speak in tongues, and ungifted men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad? 27. Mark 5:15, Behavior Of Unbelievers Mark 5:15 the very man who had had the "legion"; and they became frightened. For good reason; Luke 10:17 And the seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name." 18 And He said to them, "I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning. Jesus was evidencing a power greater than Satan, they should be terrified! 28. Unbelievers They Should Be Terrified! Jesus was evidencing a power greater than any other power! He is the Creator of the universe. John 1:3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. He created those fallen angels. Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-all things have been created through Him and for Him. Even honest evolutionists now say.. 29. EVOLUTIONIST SAYS: DARWINISM IS IN TROUBLE! 30. EVOLUTIONIST SAYS: DARWINISM IS IN TROUBLE! Several years ago, Dr. Francis Hitching gave us his book The Neck of the Giraffe and in this he writes that Darwinism is in a lot of trouble. He laments, and Im using his own words, that evolution has not, contrary to general belief, and despite very great efforts, been proven. Hitching points out that fossils do not show any history of evolutionary development. He says, creatures come into the fossil record seemingly from nowhere mysteriously, suddenly, fully formed and in a most unDarwinian way. He admits that the systematic gaps in the fossil record will never be filled with evolutionary ancestors and that it can no longer be claimed that someday scientists will find the missing creatures. He confesses that in the history of life, plants and animals must be treated as though they came into existence fully formed in the forms we know today. 31. EVOLUTIONIST SAYS: DARWINISM IS IN TROUBLE! Hitching also notes other problems and complains that science has no idea how the genetic code could have formed without a Creator, while mutations cannot explain the supposed changes of evolution. Hitching insists that there can be no debate that evolution actually took place. After all, he says, we are here and that is proof enough. Jew or gentile woman? 38. Mark 5:22+25, Twelve Years NKJMark 5:25 Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, Mark 5:42 the girlwas twelve years old What a scene, Jesus on His way to raise, from the dead, a dead Israeli Heals a ceremonially unclean (gentile?) woman who is dying from her unclean condition, and cannot buy her way out of her condition. Praise God! To me it sounds like His ministry to the church. On His way to raise Israel from their deadness (after the Great Tribulation), He heals a gentile bride. 39. Mark 5:31, Who Was Healed, And Why? Mark 5:31 And His disciples said to Him, "You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, 'Who touched Me?' Looks like His disciples didnt have a clue who was being healed, but it was by faith. We dont know who the LORD is healing either, or why, but its always by grace through faith Mark 5:28 For she thought, "If I just touch His garments, I will get well. Someone who believed and received 40. Lets read Mark 5:35-43 41. KJVMark 5:36, Be Not Afraid, Only Believe KJVMark 5:36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe. As a lost teenager, racing motorcycles, I painted this on my motorcycle gas tank. Go figure how the LORD works! 42. Luke 8:51 Exodus 33:11 Mark 5:37 Proverbs 27:9, Friends Mark 5:37 And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except Peter and James and John the brother of James. We find these 3 repeatedly taken aside at, this healing, The Transfiguration, Jesus' prayer in Gethsemane Proverbs 27:9. . . a man's counsel is sweet to his friend. We all need close friends and even Jesus had an inner circle of close friends. The Bible says a bit about true friends. Steadfast, faithful, truthful, a friend loves consistently, and is as close to you as your own family. Proverbs 17:17, 18:24, 27:6, Matthew 17:1, Luke 8:51, 9:28, Mark 9:2, 13:3, 14:32-33 43. The Word grace In Mark The Word grace is not in Mark, or Matthew Luke 2:40 The Child continued to grow and become strong, increasing in wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him. I have a question about faith versus works. I am very much a by faith alone, in Christ alone believer (who also believes in OSAS). But, to be perfectly honest, I find myself wondering if faith itself isnt a form of works. Believing is something you have to do to be saved. In other words, if you dont work it by believing and receiving you wont be saved. Isnt that works? A. Then they asked Him, What must we do to do the works God requires? Jesus answered, The work of God is this: to believe in the one He has sent (John 6:28-29). In the Greek language believe and faith come from the same word. Therefore if faith is a work it is the only one that God requires. 46. Mark 5:34, Faith Works, Faith Versus Works, Is Faith A Form Of Work? In Romans 4:5 Paul said, To the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited to him as righteousness. And in Ephesians 2:8-9 he said were saved by grace through faith and not by works. In both these places He differentiated between faith, which is required, and works, which are not. Because she was as good as raised already as soon as He walked in. But it also confirmed their position that she was dead. Not one of them could say, Well, I didnt really think she was dead.
