Jesus and His disciples went to the east side of the lake (Sea of Galilee) into the region of the Gerasenes. Greek manuscripts are divided on the precise location involved, citing three names: Gadarenes (Matt. 8:28), Gergesenes (from Origen), and Gerasenes. (See comments on Luke 8:26). Reliable evidence favors the name Gerasenes which probably referred to the small town Gersa (modern Khersa) located on the lakes eastern shore. Most of its inhabitants were Gentiles (cf. Mark 5:11, 19). 6. Country of Gergesenes, Gadarenes 7. Yet neither of these two alternatives fits the Biblical account. First, the miracle is preceded by a boat ride from Capernaum, marked by a storm on the lake, and the destination is the "other side Matthew 8:28, Mark 5:1). Gerasa, 33 miles southeast of the lake, can hardly count as the "other side." As for Gadara, the city itself was 6 miles to the southeast, and high up, but it did have a harbor on the lake's southern edge. The area around this harbor had no "steep bank," however, down which a herd of swine could rush. The only place that fills these requirements is the site of the ancient village of Gergesa. The steep bank stands a few hundred yards south of Kursi http://www.netours.com/content/view/127/36/ 10. Mark 5:10, Out Of The Country? Mark 5:10 And he began to implore Him earnestly not to send them out of the country. He didnt want to go on vacation, or didnt want to go on a cruise, or maybe he was afraid of flying? Luke uses a different word; Luke 8:31 They were imploring Him not to command them to go away into the abyss. abussos Meaning: boundless, bottomless Years ago I remember telling my secretary, When a customer is on the phone, dont say, hes in the bathroom, say, hes away from his desk right now. both are true. Marks audience, Romans, Luke, gentiles or Greeks 16. Mark 5:12, GotQuestions.org, on; Demons, Demonic Possession? Question: "What does the Bible say about demon possession / demonic possession? Answer: The Bible gives some examples of people possessed or influenced by demons. From these examples we can find some symptoms of demonic influence and gain insight as to how a demon possesses someone. Here are some of the biblical passages: Matthew 9:32-33; 12:22; 17:18; Mark 5:1-20; 7:26-30; Luke 4:33-36; Luke 22:3; Acts 16:16-18. In some of these passages, the demon possession causes physical ailments such as inability to speak, epileptic symptoms, blindness, etc. In other cases, it causes the individual to do evil, Judas being the main example. In Acts 16:16-18, the spirit apparently gives a slave girl some ability to know things beyond her own learning. The demon-possessed man of the Gadarenes, 17. Mark 5:12, GotQuestions.org, on; Demons, Demonic Possession? who was possessed by a multitude of demons (Legion), had superhuman strength and lived naked among the tombstones. King Saul, after rebelling against the LORD, was troubled by an evil spirit (1 Samuel 16:14-15; 18:10-11; 19:9-10) with the apparent effect of a depressed mood and an increased desire to kill David. Thus, there is a wide variety of possible symptoms of demon possession, such as a physical impairment that cannot be attributed to an actual physiological problem, a personality change such as depression or aggression, supernatural strength, immodesty, antisocial behavior, and perhaps the ability to share information that one has no natural way of knowing. It is important to note that nearly all, if not all, of these characteristics may have other explanations, so it is important not to label every depressed person or epileptic individual as demonpossessed. On the other hand, Western cultures probably do not take 18. Mark 5:12, GotQuestions.org, on; Demons, Demonic Possession? satanic involvement in peoples lives seriously enough. In addition to these physical or emotional distinctions, one can also look at spiritual attributes showing demonic influence. These may include a refusal to forgive (2 Corinthians 2:10-11) and the belief in and spread of false doctrine, especially concerning Jesus Christ and His atoning work (2 Corinthians 11:3-4, 13-15; 1 Timothy 4:1-5; 1 John 4:1-3). Concerning the involvement of demons in the lives of Christians, the apostle Peter is an illustration of the fact that a believer can be influenced by the devil (Matthew 16:23) [Acts 5] . Some refer to Christians who are under a strong demonic influence as being demonized, but never is there an example in Scripture of a believer in Christ being possessed by a demon. Most theologians believe that a Christian cannot be possessed because he has the Holy Spirit abiding within (2 Corinthians 1:22; 5:5; 1 Corinthians 6:19), and the Spirit of God would not share residence with a demon. 19. Mark 5:12, GotQuestions.org, on; Demons, Demonic Possession? We are not told exactly how one opens himself up for possession. If Judas case is representative, he opened his heart to evilin his case by his greed (John 12:6). So it may be possible that if one allows his heart to be ruled by some habitual sin, it becomes an invitation for a demon to enter. From missionaries experiences, demon possession also seems to be related to the worship of heathen idols and the possession of occult materials. Scripture repeatedly relates idol worship to the actual worship of demons (Leviticus 17:7; Deuteronomy 32:17; Psalm 106:37; 1 Corinthians 10:20) [1 Corinthians 10:19-20] , so it should not be surprising that involvement with idolatry could lead to demon possession. Based on the above scriptural passages and some of the experiences of missionaries, we can conclude that many people open their lives up to demon involvement through the embracing of some sin or through cultic involvement (either knowingly or unknowingly). Examples may include immorality, drug/alcohol abuse that alters ones state of consciousness, rebellion, bitterness, and transcendental meditation. 20. Mark 5:12, GotQuestions.org, on; Demons, Demonic Possession? There is an additional consideration. Satan and his evil host can do nothing the Lord does not allow them to do (Job 1-2). This being the case, Satan, thinking he is accomplishing his own purposes, is actually accomplishing Gods good purposes, as in the case of Judas betrayal. Some people develop an unhealthy fascination with the occult and demonic activity. This is unwise and unbiblical. If we pursue God, if we are clothing ourselves with His armor and relying upon His strength (Ephesians 6:10-18), we have nothing to fear from the evil ones, for God rules over all! GotQuestions.org [DLK adds; There are 2 main ways to err regarding demons/Satan, #1 ignorance, unbelief, denial, or discounting the reality, or importance. #2 Too much focus, attention , or importance on demons/Satan. Mark 5:13 Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea. Everyone asks, Why did they want to enter the pigs, and why did Jesus allow it? 23. Mark 5:13, Why Enter The Swine? So we could have Deviled Ham 24. Mark 5:13, Why Enter The Swine? Why did they want to enter the pigs, and why did Jesus allow it? Im sure the demons figured that even being a pork chop would be better than the abyss. Mark 5:15, Behavior Of A Saved Man Mark 5:15 They came to Jesus and observed the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind What was his behavior after being saved? Was he barking like a dog, slain in the spirit, falling down and thrashing around, uncontrollably laughing, or speaking in not understandable gibberish? No, nonsensical behavior is characteristic of someone who is not controlled by the Holy Spirit of God. 1 Corinthians 14:23speak in tongues, and ungifted men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad? 27. Mark 5:15, Behavior Of Unbelievers Mark 5:15 the very man who had had the "legion"; and they became frightened. For good reason; Luke 10:17 And the seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name." 18 And He said to them, "I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning. Even honest evolutionists now say.. 29. EVOLUTIONIST SAYS: DARWINISM IS IN TROUBLE! 30. EVOLUTIONIST SAYS: DARWINISM IS IN TROUBLE! Several years ago, Dr. Francis Hitching gave us his book The Neck of the Giraffe and in this he writes that Darwinism is in a lot of trouble. He laments, and Im using his own words, that evolution has not, contrary to general belief, and despite very great efforts, been proven. Hitching points out that fossils do not show any history of evolutionary development. He says, creatures come into the fossil record seemingly from nowhere mysteriously, suddenly, fully formed and in a most unDarwinian way. He admits that the systematic gaps in the fossil record will never be filled with evolutionary ancestors and that it can no longer be claimed that someday scientists will find the missing creatures. He confesses that in the history of life, plants and animals must be treated as though they came into existence fully formed in the forms we know today. 31. EVOLUTIONIST SAYS: DARWINISM IS IN TROUBLE! Hitching also notes other problems and complains that science has no idea how the genetic code could have formed without a Creator, while mutations cannot explain the supposed changes of evolution. Hitching insists that there can be no debate that evolution actually took place. After all, he says, we are here and that is proof enough. But his statements are an honest and bottom-line admission that the theory of evolution has no support from the scientific facts. Notes: Francis Hitching. Was Darwin Wrong? Life, April, 1982. I have a question about faith versus works. I am very much a by faith alone, in Christ alone believer (who also believes in OSAS). But, to be perfectly honest, I find myself wondering if faith itself isnt a form of works. Believing is something you have to do to be saved. In other words, if you dont work it by believing and receiving you wont be saved. Isnt that works? A. Then they asked Him, What must we do to do the works God requires? Jesus answered, The work of God is this: to believe in the one He has sent (John 6:28-29). In the Greek language believe and faith come from the same word. Therefore if faith is a work it is the only one that God requires. 46. Mark 5:34, Faith Works, Faith Versus Works, Is Faith A Form Of Work? In Romans 4:5 Paul said, To the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited to him as righteousness. And in Ephesians 2:8-9 he said were saved by grace through faith and not by works. In both these places He differentiated between faith, which is required, and works, which are not. Therefore, its reasonable to conclude that having faith (believing) is the only thing we can do thats not counted as work, and in fact if faith wasnt required, then everyone would automatically be saved. http://gracethrufaith.com/ask-a-bibleteacher/, Monday, February 17th, 2014Q 47. Mark 5:39, Not Dead, But Asleep Mark 5:39 And entering in, He said to them, "Why make a commotion and weep? The child has not died, but is asleep. Why would the LORD say that? Because she was as good as raised already as soon as He walked in. But it also confirmed their position that she was dead. Not one of them could say, Well, I didnt really think she was dead. They had already scoffed at the idea that she was just sleeping. 48. So, In Closing 49. Pigs Into Deviled Ham? 50.
