History• Coca-Cola history began in 1886

when the curiosity of an Atlanta pharmacist, Dr. John S. Pemberton, led him to create a distinctive tasting soft drink that

could be sold at soda fountains.• The first servings of Coca-

Cola were sold for 5 cents per glass. During the first year, sales averaged a modest nine servings per day in Atlanta

The first bottling of coca-cola occurred in vicksburg, Mississippi, at a Biedenharn Candy Company in 1891.

History of Bottling• 1894……A modest start for a

bold idea….at a candy store in Mississippi.

• 1899 ….First Bottling agreement.

• 1990-1909….Rapid Growth, Bottling rights are sold to local entrepreneurs.

• In 1909 nearly 400 coca-cola bottling plants were operating, most of them family owned businesses.

1916…..Birth of the Contour bottles.A design from Root Glass Company of Terre Haute, Indiana won enthusiastic approval in 1915 and was introduced in 1916.

1920…..bottling overtakes fountain salesAs the 1920’s dawned, more than 1,000 bottlers were

operating in U.S.A six-bottle cartons were a huge hit after their 1923

introduction.By the end of the 1920s bottle sales exceeded the fountain sales.

1920s and 30s…..International ExpansionPlants were opened in countries like France, Mexico, Spain and South Africa. By the time world war II began, coca-cola was being bottled in 44 countries.

1940s ….Post war growthDuring the war 64 bottling plants were set up around the world to supply to the troops.

1950s….Packaging innovation

For the first time, consumers have choices of coca-cola packaging type and sizes.

Cans were also introduced, becomes generally available in 1960.

1960s….New Brands introduced

1990s ….New and growing international market

• Political and economic changes opened vast market

• After the fall of the Berlin wall the company invested heavily to build plants in eastern Europe.

• New bottling facilities in Africa.

system grew up with roots deeply planted in local communities.

• Strong locally based relationships between coca-cola bottlers.

• Customers and communities are the foundation.

• The Red-white colored scheme in the coca-cola logo(1950) was kept simple and distinctive to lure the young minds.
