DYNAMIC DATACarrier Transicold, an industry leader in the transport refrigeration business, recently launched its Datalink 2 recorder, providing refrigerated haulers the ability to independently verify temperatures inside trucks or trailers. An included integral thermal printer allows drivers to produce numerical and graphical trip reports for their receivers, which may help a company’s distribution operations more easily track and manage the data for compliance. The system is designed for “plug-and-play simplicity” with two available versions: body-mount models attach easily to cargo areas, while in-dash mounted versions provide more convenient driver access.1

FLEET FLEXIBILITYTruckers rely on side cameras, backup cameras, and more to monitor operations and drive more safely, but the onboard video market is now expanding beyond cab cameras to capture a more complete view of what is happening around the vehicle. To further enhance fleet efficiency, Lytx Inc., a leader in video telematics, recently launched its Unisyn platform, enabling fleets to install and connect a “virtually limitless” number of cameras on a truck.2 The Unisyn video platform

works seamlessly with Lytx’s award-winning DriveCam platform, “using DriveCam’s exception-based video to help prevent collisions through programmatic coaching, and Unisyn’s always-on video to track, monitor, and act on fleet and field operations.” Unisyn has the potential to revolutionize the video telematics industry, as its flexibility allows fleets of any size or complexity to utilize best-in-class video capture to protect their businesses. Not only can customers tailor a solution that provides desired safety and fleet optimization services but they can also choose the level of risk they wish to monitor in their fleet.3

New advancements in smart trucking may help

boost fleet efficiency and improve safety, for both

the driver and the cargo.

PACKAGING

FLEX FILMAran U.S.A., a subsidiary of leading liquid-packaging company Aran Group, has developed new, precision-engineered bags and filaments to increase the shelf life of organic and natural foods, as well as beverages that are packed in bag-in-box and intermediate bulk containers. Utilizing its trademarked, three-step Brand Protection Assessment Process, Aran’s goal is to help achieve optimal engineered shelf-life solutions for clients’ liquid food products. The company’s thermal lamination technology, AranFlex, ensures precision layer adhesion by heat without the use of adhesives or solvents. The film structures formed by AranFlex technology have uniform control of barrier properties, as well as optimum gauge control that provides the exact dimensions necessary to shield perishable products. Resulting films enjoy environmental stress-crack resistance, ensuring product integrity by preventing flex-cracking during transportation and distribution.4

FRESH FOOD TO GOIn its quest to provide consumers the best-tasting hummus on the market, health-food company Baruvi Fresh’s inability to provide fresh, preservative-free hummus in a portable package was a significant hurdle. The answer? Packaging the hummus components in three discrete pouches with barrier technology that keeps ingredients fresh. hummustir is a uniquely appealing, shelf-stable hummus kit that allows consumers to safely transport the ingredients and combine them anywhere, at anytime, in order to enjoy organic, non-GMO, preservative-free hummus. Kit components include a laminated retort pouch housing 9.5 oz. of chickpea purée and two smaller foil packs containing 2.5 oz. of toasted tahini and spices. The pouches, along with an included wooden stirrer, are held in a round, lidded paperboard cup.5

As consumer demand for organic, natural, and “good for you” products

continues to grow, so does the need for adequate packaging to protect

products from spoiling as they move through the supply chain.

ANALYTICS

BACKGROUND One-size-fits-all diets have been proven less effective, because foods can affect consumers in significantly different ways. For example, a week-long clinical study7 showed that despite being offered identical meals, respondents experienced dramatically different impacts in their blood glucose levels. This proved true even when testing after consumption of lower-glycemic foods such as whole-wheat breads, suggesting genetic variations in response to foods.8 The American Health Association has also endorsed personalized nutrition plans and recommends that health care providers take into account a patient’s personal preferences when providing healthy eating advice, using language that’s easy to understand and giving specific food examples.9

ZIPONGOIn its quest to legitimize food as medicine, leading digital nutrition platform Zipongo recently closed its

Series B funding round of $18 million, bringing its total investment to date to $28 million. The company’s strategy is to provide the health care system with valuable insights via big data, in addition to providing personalized nutrition recommendations to individuals. The additional funding will be used to expand research behind Nutriomics—“the study of personalizing food recommendations based on bodily measures of genetics, metabolomics, immune-response and the microbiome, and a person’s nutrition status, food buying, tastes, and food environment, to optimize measures of health, emotional, and performance outcomes.”10

The company’s aim is to enable “sustainable, long-term behavior change by pointing individuals to the healthy options all around them—at home, at the grocery store, at their employer’s onsite cafe, and in local restaurants.”11 By moving beyond Nutriomics, Zipongo hopes to enable health care providers and health systems to prescribe “Food as Medicine,” both as

Millions of dollars are spent each year on

generic diet plans, but many consumers struggle

to achieve desired results. A recent scientific

study revealed that personalized nutrition plans

may be more effective in helping consumers achieve individual goals, because

they can be tailored to suit a consumer’s unique body composition.6

a preventive tool and as condition-specific supportive care. This could be effective, the company believes, for treatments for cancer, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, and more. Currently, Zipongo’s platform facilitates digital nutrition coaching for large employers, health plans, and numerous wellness partners. Its food utility tools are designed to help families make quality, healthy food selection choices that meet their unique, diverse needs, with tools that offer everything from meal planning, recipes, grocery rewards, and online grocery ordering to menu coaching and mobile meal ordering. The company’s HIPAA-secure platform then delivers anonymized, robust population analytics to relevant enterprises.12

HABITFounded by Neil Grimmer (the mastermind behind Plum Organics baby food), Habit is a California-based startup with plans to revolutionize healthy eating by creating personalized nutrition plans based on a person’s DNA. More specifically, Habit will develop nutritional guidelines based on a person’s personal goals, as well as his or her unique biology and metabolism. The company will then create an individualized food plan and deliver those ingredients to the user’s home.

Baseline information will be gathered through an in-home blood sample kit. The blood sample is then analyzed to identify a series of biomarkers, including those focused on nutrition and genetic DNA variations. Measurements are taken to determine how biomarkers change once the consumer drinks a “proprietary, milkshake-like metabolic challenge beverage,” which helps assess how the consumer’s body responds to fat and sugar. Other metrics considered include height, weight, waist size, and health and wellness goals, along with vitamin levels, insulin levels, fasting glucose scores, and more.13 Data is synthesized using a patent-pending approach before generating a personalized meal plan. Plans provide a breakdown of carbs, fats, and proteins that the consumer should eat that day. Ideally, the meals delivered by Habit should satisfy what the consumer’s body is craving, which could differ from what the consumer thinks he or she wants.

Initial testing will cost $299 per person, with optional meals available for $12-$15 each, though Grimmer hopes to bring down the price to increase accessibility for at-risk populations. Long-term growth will depend on Habit’s ability to sustain consumer interest once the plan starts to feel routine. Grimmer states that Habit will extend beyond initial testing and meal plans but has not shared specifics. The Habit beta is set to be launched in January 2017.14

VEGAN-FRIENDLY FORMULAA San Francisco–based startup plans to introduce a dairy-free milk that tastes like cow’s milk and has identical nutrition. That’s because, thanks to $4 million in investments, scientists can now add bovine DNA to the vegan-friendly formula, along with plant nutrients and yeast. Perfect Day claims its formula is the first to truly create a vegan milk that can’t be distinguished from cow’s milk. The company assembled a team of nutritionists and scientists, engineers, chefs, and food designers to accomplish the feat. Because the brand won’t “sacrifice milk’s chemical composition,” vegans will now be able to have cheese, yogurt, and ice cream that tastes like those made from cow’s milk. The company plans to launch its products by the end of 2017.15

EXOTIC ALTERNATIVECalifornia-based Desert Farms began after its founder, Walid Abdul-Wahab, missed the taste of the camel’s milk he drank in Saudi Arabia. Camel’s milk has been used for medicinal purposes in the Middle East, but

recent research is now bearing out additional benefits. Rich in insulin and related substances, camel’s milk appears to have diabetes-fighting qualities as well as renal protection qualities. There may also be applications in cancer treatments, fighting chronic hepatitis, treating food allergies, and more.16 Given the demand for healthy alternatives in California, Abdul-Wahab began selling camel milk and camel-milk-based products, positioning it as a healthy beverage and citing its advantages—50 percent less fat and 50 percent less saturated fat than USDA cow’s milk. The Desert Farm lineup includes raw milk (fresh, frozen, and in a yogurt-like form), powdered milk, pasteurized milk, face-cleaning products, and more. Plans have been made to add camel milk ice cream and infant formula. Each 16-ounce bottle of pasteurized milk costs $18 and is available for purchase on the company’s website, as well as Whole Foods stores in Northern California.17

As nutritionists debate whether whole, full-fat milk is the best

choice for good health, a growing number of companies are

introducing additional types of milk in the market.

POSITIVE POTENTIALThe REFLEX (Recycling of Flexible Packaging) Project is a collaborative R&D project co-funded by Innovate UK and supported by member companies across the entire supply chain. Aiming to understand and address the technical barriers to mechanically recycling flexible packaging, Innovate UK has now released the following findings at the project’s close:

• Compositional analysis of the postconsumer waste stream shows a larger than expected proportion of the current waste stream is potentially recyclable.

• Practical trials to sort and recycle flexible packaging using existing technologies confirmed it is technically possible to sort, wash, and extrude postconsumer packaging.

• Packaging designs were also explored to improve recyclability at the end of life, resulting in the development of preliminary “Design for Recycling” Guidelines. The guidelines—which will be made available for future development work—will provide information on how to design key components to positively affect suitability for mechanical recycling at the end of life.20

READY, SET, RECYCLEDow Chemical believes its new RecycleReady Technology could be part of a broader $3.5 billion environmental savings solution. Developed in collaboration with the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) and other industry members, RecycleReady Technology helps converters create recyclable stand-up barrier pouches using RETAIN polymer modifiers. The resulting pouch is the first of its kind, with barrier

film that can be recycled in a polyethylene recycling stream. The technology has already been approved by the SPC’s How2Recycle program to use a Store Drop-Off label, which means consumers can recycle packages at participating grocery and retail stores.21

The Flexible Packaging Association recently shared that reduction in food waste

in the United States has moved up in national priorities, with the USDA and EPA

declaring a target of 50 percent reduction by 2030.18 In the United Kingdom,

flexible packaging initiatives continue moving forward, as flexible packaging already

accounts for up to 32 percent of consumer plastic packaging waste.19
