Driver, 25, charged after car clocked at twice speed limit on QEW

A local man faces charges including for impaired driving and having open liquor in a vehicle after police say they spotted a car going twice the speed limit on a highway.

Police say last Thursday at 1:25 a.m., members of the OPP Niagara Detachment were conducting traffic enforcement on the QEW eastbound in the town of Lincoln when they saw a speeding car.

While police did not reveal the exact

speed at which the car was travelling, twice the speed limit is 200 km/h.

Officers followed and say they observed the vehicle driving erratically. The vehicle was stopped and the driver was arrested.

The driver faces charges of impaired driv-ing, driving over 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, dangerous driving, driving with no licence, racing a motor vehicle, and driving with open liquor in the vehicle. The vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Cabral Rungan, 25, is to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in St. Catharines Feb. 2.

You may want to check on your Christmas lights.

Health Canada on Friday expanded a recall of indoor and outdoor plug-in deco-rative light strings manufac-tured by two Chinese man-ufacturers and sold across Canada.

If you have some of the lights you are advised to stop using them.

Health Canada tests determined the lights may pose overheating, fire and electric shock hazards.

It has received 19 reports of consumer incidents relat-ed to the use of seasonal lights manufactured by Tai-zhou Hongpeng Colour Lan-terns Co. Ltd. and Ningbo Ego International Co. Ltd.

Four are reports of shock, including two with second-ary minor burns, plus two reports of minor burns only.

Approximately 1.3 million products have been distribut-ed in various stores. The time period sold is unknown.

The products can be iden-tified by CSA file numbers 241989 and 263917, which can usually be found on the manufacturers product identification label, a tag on

the wire of the light string.

Stouffville man, 30, dies after car chase

The name of a 30-year-old at the centre of a provincial investigation into a police car chase near Ballantrae was released by officials.

Christopher Chartrand, from Stouffville, was the driver of the car that crashed in a ditch Sunday morn-ing, according to the Special Investigation Unit.

Investigators from the police watchdog are con-tinuing to probe the crash that occurred at Hwy. 48 and Vandorf Road, just north of the Maples of Ballantrae Golf Club.

The incident was sparked after a York Regional Police car attempted to make a stop at about 2:20 a.m.

The driver failed to stop and the officer pursued.

The Ontario Provincial Police, which patrols Hwy. 48, assisted in the investiga-tion, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said.

    BY JIM THOMAS

Tim and Andrea Jones recently received the perfect pre-Christmas gift, a gift so per-fect they couldnt wait until Dec. 25 to break the good news.

And little wonder.Six-year-old Chala Jones, a native of Addis

Ababa, Ethiopia, has a new home following approval of his parents adoption application heard recently by a judge in the East African capital.

The three arrived back at Pearson Inter-national Airport Dec. 10, where they were joyously greeted by Andreas parents and a niece.

Tim and Andrea reside in Markham. Tim is a director at Stouffvilles ONeill Funeral Home. Andrea is an ultra-sound technologist and clinic manager in Toronto.

It was five years ago, after taking up resi-dence in Markham, that Tim and Andrea began thinking seriously about obtaining a child through adoption.

They first contacted the Childrens Aid Society, but found the process extremely long. Hoping to speed things up, they decided to go internationally. They discovered an adoption agency in Toronto that suited their purpose.

Since Andrea had travelled extensively in Africa, it was her desire to adopt a native child, boy or girl, from that continent. The agency recommended Ethiopia.

Sounded like a great idea, said Tim. I was all for it.

But neither had ever visited that particular

country before. Within a year they made two trips.

After the very first flight, a time period of 14 hours, they came face to face with their future son.

He was then residing in an Addis Ababa orphanage.

Through a means of match-up, the agency endeavoured to bring together those qualities exemplified by both the parents and the child.

Holding his teddy bear, a book

and a laptop computer, he simply

waved goodbye and left a really

    brave little guy

(The agency) simplified everything, Andrea said. We knew instantly Chala was the one.

A court date was set for July.

Although the language of native Ethio-pians is Amharic, Tim and Andrea encoun-tered few barriers. To their relief the adop-tion court judge spoke English.

Within minutes Chala was ours, said Andrea.

But the waiting period for a visa took four months.

This caused the parents some con-cern, because the expiry deadline was fast approaching. The federal governments refugee program further log-jammed the procedure.

Thats when the office of Health Minis-ter and local MP Jane Philpott stepped in and speeded up the process.

Both Tim and Andrea praised the Markham-Stouffville MPs assistance.

Chalas departure from the orphanage was unpretentious, Andrea recalled.

Holding his teddy bear, a book and a laptop computer, he simply waved good-bye and left a really brave little guy, she said.

    HOME FOR CHRISTMAS

Remarkable, agreed Tim.It was much the same during the long

flight home. He slept most of the way, said Andrea.

While the new dad has already picked up a few words of Amharic, son Chala is simi-larly employed learning English.

Hes been registered at Little Rouge Pub-lic School and will enter Grade 1 on Jan. 4. The school and an adjoining park are directly across the road from where he now lives.

We reside in a very multi-cultured neighbourhood, says Andrea. This is in our favour.

Its also important that Chala maintain his roots, adds Tim.

The fact he was wearing a Blue Jays cap when we arrived indicates Chala has already accepted one area of Canadian life. He also has his own hockey stick. Pizza, his favourite food, is also popular in Ethiopia, notes Tim.

Together, Tim and Andrea feel the adop-tion was meant to be.

Chalas everything we could have want-ed, says Tim.

The best Christmas gift ever, agrees Angela.

Jim Thomas is a Stouffville resident who has written for area newspapers for more than 60 years.

Chala Jones, 6, a native of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, has a new home thanks to adop-tion by a Markham family.

The provincial government is offering help to those having trou-ble starting or expanding their fam-ily.

The province has announced it will be offering government-fund-ed fertility treatments at 50 clinics across Ontario.

Seven of the clinics are in York Region, with two each in Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill and one in Newmarket.

According to the province, one in six couples in Ontario are affect-ed by infertility.

Infertility is a serious issue that affects thousands of Ontarians who have dreams of starting their own families, Health and Long-Term Care Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins said. Children are our future. The government is supporting family-building for those who couldnt otherwise have the opportunity to have children.

The province is investing about $50 million in the program that will provide more than 10,000 patients with artificial and intra-uterine insemination, as well as more than 5,000 patients with in vitro fertiliza-tion and fertility preservation.

Fertility preservation freezing sperm and eggs will be done for eligible patients with medical rea-sons, such as a patient undergoing cancer treatment.

Women under 43 with a medi-cal condition causing infertility are eligible for the program.

Those with non-medical forms of infertility, such as single people or same-sex couples are also eli-gible for the program.

The program will fund one cycle of in vitro fertilization, which includes one-at-a-time transfer of embryos to reduce high-risk mul-tiple birth pregnancies.

Unlimited rounds of artificial insemination are also covered under the program.

Related services such as genetic testing and storing sperm, eggs and embryos are not funded.

The province will not cover the cost of fertility drugs, which

Seven clinics in region to offer new fertility programcan cost up to $1,000 per artificial insemination cycle or $5,000 per in vitro fertilization cycle.

    Since in vitro fertilization is

offered through the new program, it will no longer be covered by OHIP.

Each clinic is responsible for managing its own wait times and is

required to regularly report back to the provincial government.

What about help for Canadians?Re: Season of giving can involve modest, priceless gifts, column by Marney Beck, Dec. 17.

It really makes me angry to hear more about poor Syr-ian refugees when half the people living in this province are looking for work. I cant get full time work and Im not sure how long my short-term assignment is going to last.

What about Canadians who are out of work with little hope of finding jobs? Many have no money and are per-haps waiting to find decent housing, with a 15-year wait-ing list in our region for sub-sidized housing?

Why is it up to Canada and our taxes to provide help? What about us, here, in our own country?

My generation doesnt have full-time employment, which, therefore, will make it hard to save for retirement.

Perhaps Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should start observing more about whats around him in his own coun-try.

Mr. Trudeau: I understand social media is so important to you, judging by all your selfies, but what is going to happen to Canadians?

    K. SedgwicKNEwmARkET

Holidays are a time to reflect, wonder

As Christmas holidays approach, we are eas-ily wrapped up in the glitter and chaos of it all frantic gift shopping, endless gro-cery lists, hours cooking up delectable novelties for fam-ily feasts.

And yet, beneath this material madness there is a still and pervasive wonder about the whole celebra-tion.

It is the wonder of God

drawn near in the person of Jesus Christ, of God eternal and transcendent entering human time and space as a baby in Bethlehem.

It is the wonder of Christ being born to a teenage girl, born into obscurity in a rural village in Galilee.

It is the wonder of a God who saw the predicament of our souls our fear, our shame, our sin and our sick-ness and who came close with his incredible love and healing power.

Finally, it is the wonder of the cross, the ultimate suffering of Christ on our behalf and the consumma-tion of his coming.

These are the things I hope to reflect upon this Advent season.

As our world is racked with fear, violence and bloodshed, join me this Christmas in taking time to wonder at the fact that God has drawn near.

    Santa, about the weather...ear Santa,

You have not heard from me in a while, I know. I think the last time I wrote, it was in crayon.

Thank goodness technology has advanced and I can email you directly! Since, with lack of practice, my handwriting is now terrible.

Anyway, I know you are a busy person and like people who get to the point.

So, a couple of things. Not my wish list! Too old for that. Just a couple of things I wanted to bring to your attention, as a fan.

    1. Fashion Santa. Are you aware of this imposter,

who is doing promotions for an upscale Toronto mall?

This is a man who a) is NOT portly b) is NOT using a fake beard c) is NOT wearing the traditional suit and d) is doing media inter-views and taking selfies with pop stars?!

I thought you had a standard contract with mall Santas? They are not supposed to divert atten-tion away from you and your big day. They quietly stand in for you while youre polishing up on your piloting skills, practising your rope assisted vertical decent, making sure the GPS is working and so on.

Id watch out for this guy. Or a) he will steal your job

while you are forced into retire-ment or b) Mrs. Claus will have you on a diet of lichen and berries and hitting the treadmill at North-ern Fitness Centre twice a week. So much for cookies and milk!

    2. Red and white, your colours. I used to think, hey, Santa

wears red and white, very patri-otic, since you are Canadian, and the North Pole is in Canada, or wed like to think it is. So this is what this all about. National pride. Establishing sovereignty.

But now Im wondering, is this some sort of Liberal Party thing? As in, you are schilling for some sort of government grant? Or is your operation strictly charitable?

Ive never totally understood the economics of your factory. Are the elves getting at least minimum wage? I certainly hope they are not working for a few months and then going on the pogey. We have enough problems like that with

seasonal workers.Anyway, in the interest of fair-

ness, perhaps you should consider switching up the suit every once in a while. A powder blue would look sharp. Maybe an airline company would like to sponsor you.

    3. The weather. I know Rudolf made a name for himself one foggy Christmas Eve, and the movie White Christmas is about a warm December impacting a ski resort (fortunately Bing Crosby breaks into song and saves the day), but this year is getting kind of ridiculous. Do you have any control over the weather? Perhaps you are trying to save on snowtires for the sled, or just dont want to endure a frigid night handing out toys, but surely some sort of happy medium would get people into the holiday spirit. I know you are up there with the Pope, Dalai Lama, various Ayatollahs, so perhaps they can put in a word with whoever is in charge on your behalf. A little snow might be in order.

    4. Surveillance. I cant help but wonder if you are aware your movements on Christmas Eve are being tracked by NORAD and now Google. In fact, they broadcast your exact co-ordinates repeatedly throughout the evening, which, considering todays world, I won-der if it might be better if your whereabouts remained secret so no one who meant to do harm, if you get my meaning, will be able to take you out with a drone, frisbee or what have you. If youve watched the new Star Wars movie or Harry Potter, maybe some cloaking device is available. Worth checking into.

Anyway, Santa, all the best. No need to bring me anything. Looks like all the family will be at home to gather around the fireplace chan-nel. Thats all I really wanted. Merry Christmas. Ho ho ho.

After eight years of consecutive post-sec-ondary schooling, Markhamite Gregory Pier-racos wanted a break from pharmacy stud-ies. He wanted to spend some time pursuing his other passion, music.

Music has always been an outlet for me to de-stress, said Pierracos. He decided he wanted to pass along his tool for relaxation and help others de-stress, too.

People always say my music is relaxing, and I wanted to give people that relaxation.

He is now known as The Travelling Guitar-ist, filming music videos to his own original acoustic guitar music all around the world.

He is very much a do it yourself musi-cian/filmmaker, which requires him to com-pose a song, record/master it, and film it.

His first video, The Nomad, to an original composition of the same name, was filmed across Norway.

The video editing was done by Zurax Media.

I didnt have any experience filming music videos, said Pierracos. Norway made it easy, though, because its so beautiful. Theres so much untouched territory here.

The video features Pierracos playing his guitar on Norwegian cliffs over fjords amid serene scenes of blowing snow. He plays on huge landscapes without a soul in sight.

The blustery, snowy shots came from a hike that took him and his team 12 hours start to finish.

Im a determined person. If I want to get something done, Ill make it happen. But that pushed me to my limit, said Pierracos. Thirty pounds on my back, through the snow, uphill, both ways, like Grandpa trying to get to school. Only he is serious.

In the first kilometre, it was raining. The rest was 22 kilometres of snow, he said.

The snow hardly stopped Pierracos from continuing on. In fact, such episodes are part of the reason he decided to pursue wild

adventures with music. For me, its important to have some life

experiences, said Pierracos. Ive realized that life is short and fragile

and you have to go after things you want to do.

He says the video gained attention fairly quickly, including the attention of large trav-el agencies, promoters and a guitar manu-facturer.

Pierracos lived in Markham from child-hood. He went to St. Augustine Catholic High School, then McMaster University for his bachelor of science in biochemistry, then University of Toronto for pharmacy. He still has family living in Markham.

He says for his next project, he will be recording all of his original songs profession-ally in the Metalworks studio.

His next music video will be for his origi-nal song Time Travel, which will be filmed in Yosemite National Park in June. He will be collaborating with a high profile award-win-ning production team called Golden Gate 3d. They have 10 years of experience hiking/filming in Yosemite and will be an asset in making the project come to life.

They have filmed for National Geograph-ic, filmed a music video for Coldplay (Mid-night), and many other prestigious projects.

This is a musical journey, said Pier-racos.

I want to go around the world and show people the beauty in their country in a way they havent seen before.

The force was strong at the Unionville library Saturday as the latest instalment in the Star Wars saga zapped opening-day box office records in Europe and North America.

A couple of dozen young future Jedi Knights, and their parents, gathered at the library to sing songs and listen to stories read by Star Wars: The Force Awakens heroine Rey, Darth Vader and one of his stormtroopers before embarking on Yoda-approved crafts training and a scavenger hunt worthy of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Those who completed the assigned tasks walked away with a certificate testifying to their readiness to battle the Empire and resist the dark side of the force.

Fisher Yu, a fan of the blockbuster film franchise who plans to see The Force Awak-

ens, brought his two-year-old daughter, Erin, to meet the characters.

Its very good for us, he said. She really likes the songs and the stories.

Similar themed activities took place at the Cornell, Markham Village and Thornhill Village branches that afternoon.

Analysts were predicting the Star Wars film has shifted into hyperdrive and will soon jump to light-speed to stomp some all-time box office numbers.

That wouldnt surprise Ugu Okpei. The Star Wars superfan managed to score

tickets to a screening of Star Wars: The Awak-ening on Friday and planned to go again Sat-urday and possibly once more after that.

It was amazing, said Okpei, who works at the Unionville library and dropped by to see what his colleagues were doing to get kids in the spirit. It was totally worthwhile.

Library taps into excitement of Star Wars film
