e all learn, rather sooner than later, that a certain amount of pain isinherent to living. Modern society hasmade us weak in many ways: Comfortsoftens and vital erroneous

approaches numb the clearness that the natural waynaturally awakens. The possibility to perceive pain is directly proportional

to the degree of sensitivity. The consolation here is that sois the capacity to feel pleasure. If virtue is in the center, both, pain and pleasure, inhabit in the ends, so one andthe other, opposite and complementary, sway in similardegrees in our vital oscilloscope according to our natures. Not all humans possess the same degree of sensitivity, which, on the other hand and like almost everything, canbe developed.Physically, pain is a threshold of molecular acceleration

and it never proceeds if it there isn't a certain degree ofpressure. I believe that this is a magnificent definition ofpain, because it focuses its causes in a level ofunderstanding completely different than usual. Itsprecursor, José María Sánchez Barrio, a genius in myopinion, gave new light on an issue that, hackneyed anduncomfortable, has been addressed in medicine (even inpsychiatry!) exclusively with nervous suppressors.Any kind of physical pain requires of these three

components: pressure, consequent acceleration and, ultimately, inflammation. The etymology of inflammation, from Latin "inflammatio" (lit, set fire), clearly defines theconsequences of pressure processes. You just have to puta finger on the skin and keep pressing to understand thatis just a matter of passing a threshold. At the end, the areais hot, because any pressure, in sufficient dose orfrequency, ends up accelerating molecules which rubmore and more among themselves, get heated andinflame the tissues, which in turn compress the nerveterminals as they expand. So we see that pain is relatedwith cold and heat; hence the tremendous effectiveness oftherapies linked to thermoregulation of my old MasterSánchez Barrios.Pain is a warning threshold - Not that way! -, a defense

mechanism by which animals defend themselves in harshsituations and environments. It's not a divine curse; it's avaluable evolutionary protection. Non-motile living beingsdon't require that level of sensitivity, so plants don'tpossess a high degree of perception of the environment.Sensitivity is thus an evolutionary achievement and, assuch, is directly proportional to the time of appearance ofeach species on the planet. A lizard can't feel (in form or

intensity) like a bull, or a bull like a human. The supportthat evolution developed for such purpose has beengrowing more and more in size and complexity in theevolutionary scale and is called nervous system, crownedwith that great interpreter of signals is the brain. We can’texplore consciousness or the mystery of perceptionwithout studying and examining in depth the physiologicalfoundations of this biological mechanism, clearlyessential, if we want to start off this search with a soundknowledge basis.Since there is a continuous correlation among body,

emotion, mind and spirit, is not negligible to illuminate thepossible consequences of this discovery about the originsof pain, by considering the "other" pains that afflicthumans. The laws of excess and defect know no borders, and pain, sometimes turned into suffering, positions itselfas a point of maximum interest on the scale of personaland collective values. This is a key subject, and everyonewho has had a toothache will know what I mean, but alsoanyone who has suffered from lovesickness, the tearing aloss, or the affliction of misfortune. Not surprisingly, therepresentation of hell in the most varied cultures is that ofa kiln, an imprisonment, or its opposite ends, becausethere are also icy hells. The world in general, if only to place ourselves in space-

time, is undergoing a heating process, an accelerationprocess, and finally a process of increasing pressure. Wehumans constantly use these terms and concepts in ourdaily life because everything is a product of theenvironment and because we are all inserted in the samebubble.Increasing pressure, lack of time, acceleration, are all

signs easily recognizable, and their results can't be othersthan those described above, touching inevitably all theplanes of the fact of being human. The most sensitive (including me), subject to this set of

overstimulation, will necessarily be the first ones to jump, and we will try to understand so as to adapt ourselves assoon as possible in front of that reality. The price howeveris always high, and the scars are inevitable. Nobodyvolunteers for the way of consciousness; nobody wakesto the subtle world of spirituality on his own initiative. Evolutionary pressure: Onward, upward, inward, toward

the Whole, transcends the physical levels. Theenvironment today doesn't leave many options andaccelerates at full steam the processes of individual andcollective transformation. Pain can't be excluded from thatprocess and treat it with physical or consciousnessnumbing medication is a monumental and regrettable

"He who knows about pain, knows everything"Dante Alighieri

"Pain is unavoidable, but suffering is optional."Buddha

W

mistake. Killing the messenger is not the answer to the environment pressure;it's just an exceptional resource that shouldn't be abused, because thisalso has implications in a world where things occur piled and at fullspeed and further attention is required.

On the other hand, the symptoms of this extrememoment are unequivocal and overstimulation of allforms of information end up numbing naturallythe receptors, which "disconnect"themselves or plunge individuals into thatdirection, either by the old means(alcohol, marijuana, mushrooms ...) orthe new ones (psychotropics, chemical drugs, etc ...), the result isalike...

Saturation and the annulmentprocess of consciousnessincludes the most variedeffects (old dogs with newnames), that growexponentially. Alzheimer's andAutism are two examples thatinvolve similarcorrespondences in the plane ofthe consciousness of the Being. The result is dreadful and thebattlefield of mankind is strewnwith corpses in this battle.

Even worse, many of the fallen areprecisely those of whom we most needguidance, because they already cameexceptionally gifted of an extreme sensitivity; theyform the first line of defense for all of us and that'swhy casualties in that post are the highest.

Pain is a substantial part of life, but suffering is not;suffering is always optional because we can act on it,either by depriving it from its sources of supply(pressure, acceleration, inflammation) or deriving theexcess information that accompanies it. Runningaway doesn't override the mechanisms that producepain, quite the opposite, strengthens it. As anincentive and natural defense stays unmatched butthere's no need to look for it, because is certain tocome by itself. Hiding... there's no place where it can'treach; understanding its role is to start disabling it,accepting its existence is to accept the rules of thegame.

Woof: In the real world, our Rules of Engagement (ROE) and our environmentalawareness usually are more important than our physical fighting skills. Some of ushave clearly worked out our ROE already. This is good. Having a sense of what oneis and is not willing to fight for is an essential ingredient of not getting started inmatters for which one is not willing to fight. He who has not really thought about it may find himself having to work things out

on the fly while under duress-- not good!!!

or example, someone barksand instinctively he barks backas a matter of self-respectand/or the respect ofonlookers. Sometimes all iswell-- the situation subsides.

But sometimes, the situation escalatesand a terrible problem arises-- in thismoment he must determine whether tofight. If not, then he may fear installing abackdown from an adrenal escalation intohis self-programming. He may fear thatthis is very bad for future response toadrenal dumps. He may fear looking orfeeling like a coward. As a result he maydecide to fight-- that is to say he agrees tofight for … for what? Certainly not for anything which he

would have fought if he had alreadyworked out his thinking! For me, and your mileage may vary, a

fundamental principle is "What you thinkof me is none of my business". Ofcourse there may be variations, but on thewhole if someone barks at me it is verysimple: according to the physical realities

F

of the situation I can leave or respondwith verbal judo/de-escalationtechniques. If these fail, then I can be clear both

to myself and to any witnesses thatmay be present that I sought to avoidthe fight and now must act. Thismakes for an unencumbered mind anda superior level of action-- and bettertestimony should it ever come to that.My next rule of engagement is to

"Avoid the Three Ss". That is to say, avoid Stupid people in Stupid placesdoing Stupid things.Putting these three rules together

(Environmental awareness; What youthink of me is none of my business;

and Avoid the Three Ss) will preventmost problems before they even getstarted.Still, the flying fickle finger of fate

can reach out and tap us withdifficultsituations.Certainly environmental awareness

includes being aware of what is goingon in your physical awareness.Certainly you should have skills for"Managing Unknown Contacts" Seefor example the "Practical UnarmedCombat" DVD in our catalog for someoutstanding material by undercoverLEO, highly regarded LEO trainer andmy friend "Southnark"-- but today Iwant to talk about a particular aspect

of environmental awareness which isoff most people's radar screens -- thelegal jungle in which we find ourselves. As my criminal law professor in law

school said to me "We don't have ajustice system. We have a legalsystem." Be very clear that its rulesand values may be very different fromyour sense of Natural Law!!! You needto be very, very clear that wittyheuristics to be found on internetforums may have little or no basis infact for where you may be when theexcrement hits the fan.Furthermore, worth noting is that few

of us find ourselves in only one legaljurisdiction over time or even at the

Dog Brothers

“Learn the law of where you live, work, study, and play.Have it on your shelf for reference before you travel.

This too is part of walking as a warrior for all your days.”

same time-- within America thinkmunicipal, state, and federal all coveringyou in one place at one time and that asyou move around you find yourselfunder the different laws of the variousstates. Indeed, we have fifty differentsets of state law and there can besubstantial differences amongst them.THIS DIVERSITY IS A GOOD THING. In the wisdom of our Founding

Fathers (divinely inspired in my humbleopinion) our federal system is alaboratory of freedom so that we cantry different approaches and moveaway from ones that do not suit us toones that do suit us.

REGARDLESS, BE CLEAR THATTHE LAW OF WHERE YOU ARE AT AGIVEN MOMENT ALSO NEEDS TOBE PART OF YOURENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS. If you are to walk as a warrior for all

your days you should know how youare and aren't you allowed to bearmed; if you are required to retreatand if so, under what circumstances;what the rules are concerning thecoming to the aid of another; whenmay you use deadly force; what isconsidered deadly force; what you canand can't do to fleeing felons, what thecriminal consequences possible are

for your actions, as well as otherthings.Typically the reality of it is that we DO

NOT really know the answers to thesequestions. I know I don't, at least not tomy satisfaction! We may have read theheuristics of some seemingly knowingposter on a forum, but is that reallygoing to give us a clear and systematicsense of what the law of the legal junglein which we operate may be? Not whenthe adrenaline is flowing! The districtattorney is not going to care what wesay we read on the internet, nor is ourlawyer as we pay his fee or the judgeand jury as they decide our fate.

So, what to do if we do want to beaware of our legal environment?Funny you should ask ;-)As some of you may know, a long,

long time ago in a universe far, faraway for one year (1982) I was anattorney in Washington DC where I didfirst year associate drone work for alaw firm that had absolutely nothing todo with criminal law-- so my formalconnection with law in general andcriminal law in particular, is essentiallythat of a semi-educated layman. Of course, the effects of that

education and experience linger andgiven my current line of work it is onlynatural that I have been payingattention to these self-defense legaland criminal law issues along the way.It is from that perspective that I say

that I have found what I am going touse in my own life from here forward. It is a book called "Self-Defense Lawsof All 50 States" by Attorney MitchVilos and Evan Vilos. In my opinion, this book is simply

outstanding. As the attorney that I am(technically speaking I still am one, albeit "inactive status" for the last 29years) I appreciate the thorough natureof the work that has gone into thisbook. The citations of legal authorityreadily enable well targeted additionalresearch, should, God forbid, suchbecome necessary. The quality of thecitations also give me confidence inthe quality and level of research thathas gone into this book.Although the statutes and citations

are present, the deeper worth of thebook can be found in the simple yetsuitably nuanced examples thateffectively communicate to real peoplewanting a practical sense of the lawsand rules appreciate. This is much more than "here's the

statute and a simple explanation that isso vague as to be useless".For example, in my home state of

California simply reading the statutewould give the impression that I wasin 19th century Texas, but withcommendable thoroughness theauthors go beyond the statute itself to

explain how the real standardsapplied to your behavior are to befound in the jury instructions. In otherwords, as part of doing the work theyreal ized that Cal i fornia requiredsomething more and different for thereader to get a good sense of the truereality. In all states various sample stories

are given to illustrate the laws andquestions presented; my sense ofthings is that without compromise inquality of analysis, the material isreadily understood by real people. I would add that in contrast to other

articles and books I have seen whereinthe author is rather prissy, theseauthors seem to me to be quitecomfortable with the idea that somegood people have guns and knivesand that there are situations where thatis a good thing. After a few broad overview chapters,

each chapter is dedicated to aparticular state and answers the samematrix of questions:

Defense of Self and OthersNon-Deadly ForceDeadly ForceUse of Deadly Force to Prevent

Serious FeloniesDefense of Third PersonsExceptions to Justifiable Self-

DefenseInitial AggressorsProvocationCommitting Felony or Unlawful

Civil LiabilityDefense of PropertyHelpful Definitions Relating to

Self-Defense StatutesTopics not explained in statutes of

casesThus no matter the state, the

matrix is the same. This is very valuable--our

knowledge instead of being random, now becomes systematic! If I amgoing on a trip to a certain state, all Ineed to do is read that chapter and Iwill be informed as to the laws of thelegal jungle in which I wi l l be!Furthermore simply reading thematerial is a good exercise inclar i fy ing your own thinking andthinking about things that may nothave otherwise occurred to you.As you may have noticed, we do not

clutter our catalog with lots of items. Ifsomething is there, it is there for areason. I was so impressed with thisbook that I called up author Mitch Vilosand told him about who we are andhow we look to help people walk aswarriors for al l their days. I amdelighted to report that we now offer itin our catalog for $30. I know $30 canseem like a lot of money for one book, but I would point out that this book is,in considerable measure, a labor ofpassion by two men who want you toknow your rights and to avoid theabundant pitfalls faced by those of uswho look to take responsibility for thedefense of ourselves, our family, andthe innocent. As you can imagine, the work going

into getting all 50 States in onecoherent, well-organized, well-toldbook is considerable and the volumeof sales is such that the price is what itis--which in my opinion is quite abargain in terms of what is delivered.Buy it. Learn the law of where you live, work, study, and play. Have it on yourshelf for reference before you travel. This too is part of walking as a warriorfor all your days.

boxing that permits a lifetime training experienceand an integral development of the individual. Its ideas, techniques, philosophy etc , it allbelongs to an ancient art and must bestudied and understood in its whole. SifuSalvador Sánchez focusses his seconddvd on the wooden dummy and howit influences all of the Wing Tsunpractice. Given that the woodendummy form is taught at the finallevels of the actual system oftoday, most practitioners thatleave the system before time don'thave the opportunity to know theideas and concepts hidden withinthe form, and they cannotincorporate them in their practice. For TAOWS academy it is veryimportant that the practitionerunderstands what he is doing alwaysand in every aspect, and for this, in this

dvd we are going to follow the sameoutline that we follow in our classes,

seminars and training sessions. Our outlinefollows six steps, the first one is to develop an

idea, what we want to achieve. The second partare the forms, Siu Nim Tao, Chum Kiu, Biu Jee, the

wooden dummy form, depending on eachs level, the thirdpart is footwork, mobility understood. The fourth pillar is Chi Sao, ChiGerk, stickiness, the soul of the system. The fifth element is nonstickiness and no contact, to know what to do in order to reach contactwith the opponent in a safe way.

FU-SHIH KENPOWomen in Martial arts

One only needs to read theheadlines of the different media(television, newspapers, magazines, internet) to realizeabout the ongoing violence andrisks surrounding our existence inour society, modern but generallyunable to procure security andharmony among our fellow humanbeings.

It is for this reason that Gyms,Clubs or Martial Arts schools areachieving the highest number ofsupporters, fans, experts andprofessionals than any othersport in the world, and alsobecause of the variousorganizations that today exist inrelation to "Mistreatment orGender -based violence" in thefamily or social environment.

Fu-Shi Kenpo

istreatment or domestic violence inthe family is any natural orp s y c h o l o g i c a laggression carried outon persons in thehousehold or

domestic environment of theperpetrator, with the requirement ofliving "under one roof". The basicdifference with the crime ofgender-based violence lies withthe authorship of the offense, because in this case is nolonger a strictly male-femaleaggression, since any memberof the family or l ivingenvironment can be theaggressor and / or the victim.Gender violence is any act

of physical or psychologicalaggression against a woman, whether she's the perpetrator'spartner, his former partner or aespecially vulnerable person who lives with him.Well, in this case, the range of victims is quite open, since the doer will not only be the man, but also thewoman, and the victim wil l not only be theaforementioned person, but many other. The arts of the Far East, as well as the modern

systems of western creation, have never beenconsidered by society as elite sports that attractcrowds and have a strong repercussion in themedia and the bussiness world. But it doesn'tmean that the statistics are clearly showingthat they are the most complete sportsecond to none. There is no questionabout that, if we consider that noother modality strives to achieveand develop so many physical, mental, moral and spiritualqualities in the individual. On the other hand, thevarious features of MartialArts and their complexworld, provide theindividual who practicesthem with an integralformation. Not withoutreason, they are Arts andnot just simple sports. Finally, the number offederation licenses exceedswith remarkable clarity anyother known sport, evenconsidering that there's littlegovernment assistance andnot much motivation toexercise them. Very few

Fu-Shi Kenpo

M

achieve professional success, economically speaking. However they are there...Day by day more women are entering these modalities in

search for those measures that should be considered for asafe life and as a preventive method in front of anincreasingly violent and dangerous society, in whichfemales are those who suffer most from its adverse effects,perhaps because of their apparent physical and technicalweakness.Violence is nowadays commonplace of our lives;

assaults, robberies, muggings, rapes and murders areunfortunately almost normal in our society. Many peopleare afraid of going out, walking through parks and publicplaces, going to clubs, or having to go through certainneighborhoods, streets or areas of the city after dark.Policing measures or means put in place often can't giveus adequate protection, and we usually get to them just tonarrate facts that have ALREADY OCCURRED. This is veryregrettable."Offenders don't confine themselves simply to steal their

victims, they also want to apply them pain andpunishment, even if this makes no sense. And it's thenwhen the victim pays the price. All this has become so frequent and common among us

that every day we hear, we discuss or we read about sucha serious situation. Sti l l , very few take preventivemeasures, and on the other hand, very few adoptreasonable precautions and devote part of their time to"PREVENTIVE" training, so as not having to regret laterserious situations. The worst mistake is to think that it willnever happen to them. So they rely only on their luck. Butthe statistics say otherwise, the increase in violence andthe number of victims is ever increasing, arriving atalarming figures. Prevention against abduction and rape isan issue that should concern all women and men alike.Under Spanish law (much like in Western countries), this

violence occurs as a manifestation of discrimination, thesituation of inequality and the power relations of men overwomen, and is carried it out by those who are and havebeen their spouses, or those who are or have been linkedto them by similar sentimental relationships, even withoutcohabitation.Gender violence to which refers the above-mentioned

Act includes any act of violence, whether physical orpsychological, including aggressions to sexual freedom, threats, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty. The Comprehensive Law regulates therefore violence

against a woman by a man who is or has been her partner.Gender violence affects women of all ages, social class, employment status, size of municipality of residence,

educational level, ideological positioning or religiousoption.Undoubtedly, the most extreme evidence of such

violence are women killed by their partners or formerpartners.Statistics on deaths by gender violence provides

information on the number and socio-demographiccharacteristics of women who die each year as victims ofgender violence and their aggressors.Spanish statistics can serve as a reference with those

of other Western countries to come tosome interesting conclusions: In 2013,54 women were kil led by theirpartners or ex partners. Thisrepresents an increase over theprevious year, in which 52 personswere killed.Only 11 fatalities (20.4% of the

total) had reported theiraggressors and only four deaths(7.4% of the total) had protectivemeasures in force when the eventsoccurred.According relationship between

victim and perpetrator, in 31 casesthey were a couple (spouses, intimatepartners or boyfriends) and 23 caseswere ex-partner or were in the process ofbreaking. Percentages in eithercircumstance represent, respectively, 57.4%and 42.6%.The victim and her aggressor were l iving

together in the time of the murder in 29 cases(53.7% of total) and there was no coexistence in 25cases (46.3%).By age group, fatalities in women aged 30 or younger

were 14 (representing 25.9% of total), those between 31and 64 were 33 (61.2%) and those aged 65 or older wereseven (12.9%).Of the 54 fatalities recorded during 2013, 38 (70.4%) had

Spanish nationality and 16 (29.6%) were foreign citizens.

WHAT PREVENTIVE MEASURES CANOR MUST TAKE A PERSON?

1) Try to be more aware of these sort of problems. Facts, details, type and form. Learn or seek solutions.

2) Find ways to reduce and eliminate risks. This isprecisely the issue that we intend to focus on and discusshere.

Raúl Gutiérrez

“Policing measures or means put in place often can't giveus adequate protection, and we usually get to them just

to narrate facts that have ALREADY OCCURRED.This is very regrettable.”

3) We wish to inform you about of theproblems that exist, and the measures youshould take to solve them. With little effort you

can get it and we are willing to help you.

WHAT IS THE ROLEOF THE POLICEBEFORE THESEFACTS?1) As expected, the police

force and its means are perfectlyapplied provided they are present

in the crime scene, arrive on time or,according to circumstances, haveforeseen a possible attack. With thisi'm not trying to dismiss their effectivework, on the contrary, their means and

experience are always successful, and it'scommon knowledge that at the end the law

over imposes itself and justice prevails. Thenatural problem, as we all know, is that while

the police conducts its commendable work for thedefense of the weak and in benefit of society, the

offender surprises us with his unexpected crimes. That's why the police always goes behind the offender. It's

that simple.2) The presence of law enforcement officers on a spot repels

by itself any provision to execute a crime. This means thatoffenders will always seek to act outside the range controlled bypolice or safety agents.

3) Once a crime has occurred, the police force is applied, usuallywith great success. The problem is that material damage can berepaired in some way. But physical and psychological harm couldtake a lifetime...

It has always been said that a Masteris one who is capable of going whereothers can’t get to. Master Mansuraccepted our challenge and he did itwithout blinking. Seated in front of thetable in the office while we were workingover some details of the publishing of hislatest book, I said to him: “Mansur, everyone talks about how to submit anopponent. Does that mean thatthe techniques are infallible?”Mansur thought for a moment, then said: “Every Jiu-Jitsutechnique has its counter -technique; it is an infinite gamein which one has to always be abetter player than the opponent.”

“That’s fine, but no one seemswilling to stick their neck out; itseems as if no one wants to explainhow to get out of the principlesubmission techniques, as if it were awell guarded secret. Would you do aninstructional video about it?” I asked him.“You’re a bad boy,” he replied, “but I’mworse, because I like challenges.”

And in this way he went to bed thatnight scribbling down some notes andideas from here and there, and thefollowing day he recorded a magnificentvideo that it seemed he didn’t want tofinish.

At the end of the day, we were takingsome photos and the Master was verycontent, radiant even. The result, fortunately, is now at the reach offollowers and students. It is a projectthat wil l mark an epoch, one morechallenge that shows the didacticabilities and the great work of this Titanof the tatamis, a man who has over 50years experience in the field, and who hasthe spirit and attitude of an authenticsamurai.

nyone who hears GrandMaster Francisco Mansurspeak about his technique ofteaching Jiu-Jitsu has theimpression that learning theSoft Art is as simple as

learning to ride a bicycle:“Isn’t it? Jiu-Jitsu is an art that anyone

can learn since it does not require greatskills, though it does require one to havegood reflexes. Helio Gracie preparedeverything, the plane, the landing strip, andnow we are on our way to the moon,”Mansur often says with his absoluteadmiration of the Master who gave him his8th degree red and black belt. But, if Helio Gracie “took him to the

moon”, no one can deny that Francisco hasbeen an excellent astronaut. In the end, innearly 45 years, he has taught Jiu-Jitsu toover 19,000 students, taking 39 of them toblack belt, and all of them through adidactic method developed by the Master, called the Kioto system.“No one creates anything within Jiu-

Jitsu. What I did was to gather everythingthat Helio Gracie taught me and put it intoan order that allows you to learn better andfaster. I only made things easier so that youcan learn how each thing must be done,”reveals the 66-year-old Master, recognizedin Brazil for having the best and biggestJiu-Jitsu school for children in the country. Thanks to his impressive teachingmethods, Mansur has also developed ateaching method utilizing Jiu-Jitsu to helpphysically handicapped people(neurological problems, the deaf and dumb, the autistic, people with motor coordinationproblems, etc.).“Jiu-Jitsu is a blessing from God,” the

religious fighter often says, who did 39Vale-Tudo fights in the times in which hetrained in Helio Gracie’s academy. With the authority of being one of the

most artful in the world of teaching Jiu-Jitsu, Francisco Mansur brings hisbrilliance to the teaching of the Soft Art tothe general public. After launching the“Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Bible” showing his besttechniques in 200 colored pages, and aDVD where he shows the most important

basic techniques of the Kioto system, MasterChico (Master Paco)—as his students warmly callhim—now opens his storehouse of knowledge inGracie Jiu-Jitsu to show us how to defend againstthe main Jiu-Jitsu submissions.Still enthusiastic about the response from his

“Jiu-Jitsu Bible” and from the first DVD thatcontains a general overview of the maintechniques taught in the first classes of the Kiotosystem, Mansur believes that the new DVD will beeven more successful, if that’s possible. “Jiu-Jitsuis like a chess game with the body, each positionhas an attack and a defense and in that way thegame continues until one of the opponents gets

check mate, which is the submission,” theBrazilian Master summarizes, who these dayslives in New York.On this new DVD, firstly Mansur shows us how

exactly to utilize Jiu-Jitsu techniques to get out ofa check mate and how to apply, in the secondplace, the submission that will define the combat.“Jiu-Jitsu is a fantastic art where you play with theerror of your opponent. It might be that theadversary is on my back, ready to get a chokehold on me, but I can apply a foot-lock and forcehim to submit before he can get around my neck,”the professor gives as an example, who still todayconsiders Rickson Gracie, son of his master

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

(Helio), as the greatest fighter of alltimes. “I would like to see a fighterborn who is as perfect as Rickson, but it won’t be easy. It is often saidthat Helio raised Rickson from hishand,” says Mansur by way of eulogy. Exactly for being considered one of

the students closest to Helio Gracie,Mansur was chosen to referee thefight between Rickson Gracie andKing Zulu, done in Maracanazinho in1983.“I feel very proud to have refereed

that confrontation, with Rickson

showing himself to be a samurai andZulu a warrior. In the end, thetechnique of the samurai prevailed,”the master remembers with his eyesbright at speaking about the idol thathe watched grow up.

Progressive movementsMansur explains that his greatest

concern in the Kioto system is tofollow a system of progressivemovements that facil itates thelearning: “If you have a girlfriend, and

she loves you, but doesn’t want tokiss you, you have to immobilize herin order to be able to get a kiss. Isn’tthat right? The same happens withJiu-Jitsu. In order to get to thesubmission, you have to start todominate. That is the detail of myprogram,” explains the master withhis particular sense of humor, highlighting the importance ofpractice in the evolution of an athlete.“In the beginning, you have to train

the basics since we always start byhaving some diff icult ies in some

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

positions. If you move along assimilating the basicpositions well, the evolution comes in a natural way in thefollowing phases. Everything in Jiu-Jitsu is based on theprinciple of actions and reactions and a lot of practice. When I saw the Cirque du Soleil, I understood that nothingis impossible with good training,” he insists. The idea of progressive movements, a basic pillar in the

Kioto system of Jiu-Jitsu, can also be observed in the“Jiu-Jitsu Bible”. “That is the first book of my series. Thereare 42 classes. When one goes from the first to thesecond book, you are already in love with Jiu-Jitsu. In myschool, to get the blue belt you have to know all thetechniques from books one and two. If you know the onesfrom 3, 4, and 5, you can reach purple belt,” affirms thecreator of the Kioto system. On the three DVDs of submission defense, the master

also maintains the idea of progressive movements. “Arm-locks, American chokes, leg-locks, and foot-locks. In Jiu-Jitsu, for all of those moves, there are defenses thatnormally allow you to counter-attack and leave theopponent in a diff icult situation,” says Mansurenthusiastically, who is frequently invited by the New YorkPolice Department to give seminars and courses. “Jiu-Jitsu is a passionate art; in three or four months, a policeofficer in any part of the world can make himself a JJpractitioner. As a police officer, he can’t feel fear. JJ helpsus to dominate ourselves and acquire that kind of control.”Very happy with the results of the collection of three

DVDs about submission defenses, Mansur is alreadytalking about his next project: DVDs about self-defense.

Self-defense, the next chapterScheduled to be launched in November all over Europe,

the new DVD, where Mansur reveals the best self-defensetechniques from Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, will have everythingnecessary to be one of the most interesting in the series.“Self-defense works like a revolver, it is training and reflexactions and no more. Even the one who has a sedentarylife learns that. It is purely reflex action,” Master Mansurassures us with his particular simplicity. Now we only haveto wait and see.

oroi-Kumi Uchi, or simply Kumi Uchi when practiced without thearmor, was the specific form of the movements used in thebattlefield.Peculiar characteristics involve the Kumi-Uchi, differentiating it

according to each school or clan. This art retains unique ideas andsome scholars and teachers explain that the Kumi-Uchi Yoroi was

used immediately when a samurai lost his sword in the middle of theconfrontation. Contradictions say the Kumi-Uchi Yoroi was merely a strategicreserve of body movements to protect form the enemy on the battlefield.Disagreements and opinions aside, what matters is the sequence ofmovements that reached the XX and XXI centuries, being called Kumi-Uchi.Yoko-dori in Japanese means "steal", "snatch", and it was first taught as a

kind of Heiho, emphasizing, through thinking, an access road to victory. However, there are many applicative sequences involving this thought andthus, some masters prefer to teach Yoko-dori tactics as part of the Kumi-Uchi,set in predetermined ways. So Yoko-dori is the Seiteigata that teaches Tori, after losing his katana, to use techniques of Kumi-Uchi, where he should grabthe opponent and take advantage of the approach to steal one of his weapons- tanto, aikuchi and wakizashi - to end the fight with it.We can realize the changes and adjustments in the Seiteigata, which are

grouped in each practiced technique, so that it can be possible to use theweapon of the opponent. Consider the following:The Kumi-Uchi is characterized and differs from Yoroi-Kumi Uchi by entries

that are not interrupted because on the volume of the armor. It's easy to tell thedifference between these two points, when tested for comparison. The weightand volume of the armor and helmet preclude a series of movements, limitingthe practice of Yoroi-Kumi Uchi when it is performed with full dress and not in ademonstration in which only the kimono is worn. Its movements are

Y

summarized in small sequences that reveal more the thought line of attack anddefense than a real ability to maintain a true and lasting confrontation. Thenyou can see that, of course, techniques evolve and the need for improvementmakes the man look for answers and support for the development of hisfighting ways. The Kumi-Uchi practiced without clothing of war is by itself rich and versed

in grappling techniques and immobilizations that make possible a longerconfrontation. Obviously, these forms developed in the Edo period in whichSamurai warriors could carry two swords, raised in the thought of Kumi-Uchinumerous variables about Yoko-dori, that later were reorganized and definedas Seiteigata. Many practitioners of Bugei, when using what they have learned in the

Kumiuchi, or even when put to test, feel difficulties in using approximationtechniques and immobilization of the opponent standing up, either through thegrip - what most common - or through the techniques practiced in Seiteigata. In either way, once the difficulty arises, you must adhere to the specific point atwhich it occurs, and resort to the original technique as support for elucidation.Of course, if we analyze a technique performed in a combined sequence,

and another one in actual combat, we'll see that both, even if they are in thesame line of thought, have different characteristics due to the need to adapt tothe particular circumstances of the moment. So is also our mind, it depends onadaptation to understand and carry out the expected movement. An aggressor approaches you, clenches his fist or grabs a Tanto (knife) or

even a Katana (if we think of ancient times) and launches a sharp blow towardyour head. Before he approaches and packs his hand against you, he'll presentclear evidence of his intention of carrying out a real attack. Observing is thefirst step that enables you to take good position before an attack. Although hetries to disguise or hide his intentions, as we can see in real cases recorded by

security cameras in public places, there always will be a specific point at whichhe will reveal the first signs of his intention to carry on with his attack.A second point is the exact distance that must exist between us and the

opponent. The distance, above all, is what gives us a greater chance if theattacker holds a cutting or pointed object. We must keep the exact distancethat forces the opponent to adopt an attitude, to take a step forward to carryout an attack... and is in that moment when your mind must be prepared tounderstand his attacking movement, foresee the possible ways in which he canuse his arms and legs, how he will move and the directions of his attacks, watching if his hand is down, on top or at the side and what possible attackscan be done from that position, and so on. If you bend over to advance in agrab move, what possibilities has he to defend himself? Try to move in such away that your opponent has to work harder with his head than with his limbs.Always seek angles that hinder the sequences of attack, etc. These small details always favor a good response to initial difficulties in any

practice that seeks reality. It is important noting that the best way to prevent anattack, either on the street or in a public place, is simply not to BE there.Nothing is worth it when your life is in danger! We are analyzing situations toimprove the technique to be used.Returning to our analysis, observing is the key! Observing the movements,

the moment, the distance and, especially, the opponent's way of breathing. This will reveal much about his nervous state. We can say categorically thatcommon people naively believe that if a man is well trained he is unbeatable.Men of immature wisdom, wondering about the way to become invincible, exaltthe doubt in order to get the best response. But the man endowed with someunderstanding has a reverent belief, based on natural principles of peacefulcohabitation, and doesn't need the simple ideas of the common man, nor the

doubts of the other; he understands that respect and rationality ofconsciousness, in a single instant, can manifest all the techniques and iscapable of defeating all armies with only its principles. In the wisdom of the techniques applied in Kumiuchi, we learn that what is

simple is strong and powerful, that is, a path that favors rapid and effectiveactions. Well ... I guess everybody understands that a simpler way provides aclearer and more coherent reasoning. On the other hand, we know that notonly is this factor what favors its effectiveness. An effective technique is amovement that has beginning and an end without interruption. In Kumiuchi, embracing Uke to bring him down seems a most natural

movement. For some, it is necessary that these movements are corrected toincrease their resilience to wear caused by the physical exercise of impact andexplosion. An athlete consuming a lot of oxygen during combat is subject togreater fatigue than other athlete who consumes less. In the past, this was thedifference between life and death in many battles defending the honor. In orderto bring oxygen consumption under control is necessary to resort to the"economy of movement".This "economy of movements" means having a good motor coordination

during the fight and look for the easy way avoiding unnecessary movementsthat would impair the performance of Tori.To have a good motor coordination and thus achieve the "economy of

movement" during fights, you should pay attention to the following: it isnecessary to strengthen the abdominal muscles - which will be reflected in theuse of Hara and legs. Why is it necessary? It's simple: there's nothing more exhausting than the

need to defend and attack simultaneously. If you have a good basic training, this will hinder the advantage of Uke allowing you the economy of movement.Just look at the way the old masters resist throughout the fight in an almost

effortless way - at least to our eyes - and in one motion, they project Uke in a perfect manner. When weight ismaintained down in the correct way, it becomes difficultfor Uke to project Tori. There are many exercises that can make possible this

strengthening condition, and are practiced in mosttraditional schools. Many teachers know that we allpossess natural abilities. According to Perez Gallardo(1993), the natural abil it ies "are those that arecharacterized by being present in all human beings, regardless of their geographic location and socio-culturallevel, and which form the basis for the development ofculturally specific skills..." And in many cases, what wehave to do is develop them through exercises thatincrease our motor skills and spatial awareness. It is easy to check on some of the older Seiteigata the

number of movements that use the ground as acomplementary weapon to the technique performed. Inmost cases, hands and legs assume different positionsthat favor the application of angles favoring the impact ifthe technique is performed in projection or sudden attack.Once I had the opportunity to see a Kumiuchi masterperform movements using his body parts as rebound

pieces for soft tissues of Uke's body. Interestingly, I heardone of the oldest practitioners who also witnessed thepresentation, saying that this form was prior to the oneexecuted in the original Seiteigata, where the floor was thehighlight. Of the two forms, we can see that in addition tothe projections, the classic Kumiuchi is unique in the waysof using the body and objects as secondary weapons. In a survey by a student who is an MD, we had the

opportunity to verify that the impact of a body projectedon the ground, especially in the case of a head drop, would cause a head injury. (Worth noting that in the oldKumiuchi there wasn't any concern about perfecttechnique, now in force in modern Judo). The manner ofexecution of the movement, coupled with the way ofplacing your hands, favoring head the impact either on theground or against the hardest parts of Tori's body, isrelentless in its consequences. It is believed that suchtechniques have been developed so avidly due to the useof the armor in the Sengoku Jidai period in Japan. Theneed for an efficient technique increasingly improved theuse in combat of these destructive techniques. In a study by medical professionals, we see that the

traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and

physical and mental deficiency, exceeded only by the cerebrovascular accident(CVA) or brain attack the as neurological pathology with greater impact inquality of life.TBIs can be classified into three types according to the nature of the wound

of the skull: closed head injury, depressed fracture of the skull and openfracture of the skull. The closed head injury is characterized by the absence of head injuries or, at

most, linear fracture. When there's no macroscopic structural brain injury, closed head injury is called concussion. Contusion, laceration, hemorrhage andedema may occur in closed head trauma with injury to the brain parenchyma.Traumatic brain injuries with depressed fractures are characterized by the

presence of sunken fractured bone fragments compressing and damaging theadjacent brain tissue. Prognosis depends on the extent of the injury caused tothe brain tissue. Open head injuries with exposed skull fracture show lacerationof the peri-cranial tissues and direct communication of the scalp with brains, through sunken or chipped bone fragments. Usually this type of injury is severeand there is great possibility of intracranial infectious complications.Today, these techniques are practiced only in the graduation of Chuden and

Okuden, but many schools preserved the way of thinking of the time, such asits form and sequences of execution. So, a big difference is observed betweenthe thought of the time and its uses reflected in technical series previouslyordered. Some have come to attribute the great weapon of war of the Japanesearmy to this type of knowledge, even in the twentieth century. The great masters of old knew what techniques were classified according to

their impact consequence. Many scholars claim that the most advancedmasters achieved great perfection through their knowledge and continuous

study of the medical science, including anatomical studies in bodies ofprisoners of war, during the middle Ages in Japan. The most traditional schools taught their students to use small arms, which

they kept hidden in their hands and could caused very specific injuries, likeskull fractures on the convex side of the skull or in the base. Those in the skullconvexity could be linear, depressed, or composite.Depressed skull fractures are the result of lesions induced by objects at low

speed. The inside of the skull suffers greater damage than the outer part. Thesefractures can determine laceration of the outer brain lining membrane.Compound fractures are characterized by bone laceration, and can entail

cerebrospinal fluid fistulas, being potential sources of meningitis, tumors andother intra-cranial infections. Fractures at the base of the skull can also damagethe cranial nerves, whose endings are located there.Brain lesions can be classified into primary and secondary. Primary lesions

arise as a result of the impact, but usually they are already present whenreceiving the impact. Secondary lesions are those of progressive course, arising as a consequence of bruises, edema, ischemia or hypoxia, which canlead to a delayed neurological damage.Brain tissue may be injured directly at the site of impact ("coup lesion") or in

spots diametrically opposite to the impact ("counter-coup lesion"). The lowerportions of the frontal and temporal lobes are the areas more prone to "counter-coup lesions", since the bones of the skull base, especially in the temporal andanterior cranial fossas, have rough surfaces, full of anatomical accidents. It has been proved that beyond the purposes of self-defense, the Kumiuchi

had a large number of substantial combat strategies that were far beyond thesimple arsenal of projections, keys and chokes, as well as the objectives of itscombat forms

It has been a long journey withyou and Budo International inorder to reveal the ancientmethod of Kyusho. It hasbeen highly rewarding andwe have found that it hasspread worldwide tostrengthen individuals, groups and styles. The journey began as a

controversial issue, however, after 12 yearsis a reality; its value, itscontinuous deepening inthe study of humananatomy, physiology andfunctionality have been widely acceptedand integrated all over the world. This has been achieved through over

20 videos that span multiple layers ofintegrated instruction in each, andprovide the beginner as well as themore experienced ones aconstant source to expandknowledge.

Evan Pantazi reviews his first dozen years with us: 12 yearsof close collaboration, 21 videos and several books in fivelanguages, as well as hundreds of articles, recordings, meetings and a lot of good moments. We think it's a goodtime to cast a glance back into the road traveled; life goestoo fast and is good to stop now and then to admire thefruits we have collected along the path. When we started ourcollaboration, the Kyusho technique was almost unknownoutside the US, where also had a questionable reputation. Thethorough and painstaking job carried out by Master Pantazihas changed this paradigm and today Kyusho is amongstthe most appreciated and recognized ways ofinter-style work within the martial panorama. An achievement to be attributed to histeaching and detailed explanations, stepby step, based on scientific researchreadings on the subject.

Alfredo Tucci

12 years, 21 videos, the most comprehensive Kyusho program

On the surface we can readily see an introduction to theknowledge and an unfolding physical curriculum that started

with the unique ways to revive the body from theseattacks. The premise being safety, but in duality a wayto reverse engineer the Kyusho from a health as well asdysfunctional skill… which was later defined in a higher

degree with the First Aid video. In the beginning we utilized the most accepted

terminology of the day (acupuncture pointdesignations), but steadily progressed into the

names of the nerves and other anatomicalstructures we were employing. So for all

those already involved with Kyusho itwould not shock or alienate them, butrather slowly educate all to the realunderlying structures and cause ofdysfunction. All we have done hasbeen exhaustingly researched andverified by medical and scientificspecialists of many fields of study…field tested hundreds of times onthousands of practitioners around the

world. The more we produced themore we were able to escalate that

research and inform many moreparticipants what worked, what did not

and why. Each video has a technical application on the

basic level with the first 5 DVDS illustrating most ofthe targets that are practical for combative use. We

demonstrated drills and ways to improve targeting inl ive motion… a breakthrough for Kyusho

instructors that typically employed staticapplication. The next series were situational

application using the same targets withspecialized results from takedowns to

grappling, joint manipulations andweapon attacks. These were keptopen with targeting as the goalinstead of specific technique thatare prone to failure in high stress

and adrenalized restrictionsunder real attack. And in the

process helped multiplethousands of Martial Artists

from all styles to enhancetheir methods and increasethe efficiency… evenanswer the questions theyhad about the verystrangest of postures oractions in their style.

After this basic understanding was accomplished thesecond series dug deeper into the Martial Artsencompassing skills such as Iron Shirt, How to break downthe hidden meanings in Martial Arts forms, bodycompression, the significance in the tools or weapons youchoose and much needed reverse engineering of KyushoFirst Aid. Within this second phase of Kyusho educationwe concentrated more on the physiological and functionalaspects of the human body and how to disrupt or restorethem more profoundly than in the first phase.

Each of these DVDS had a technical level that was readilyunderstandable, but each also had deeper information inthem as well. As one example the Iron Shirt DVD at thesurface level instructed on how to protect the body fromdeeper penetration and affect from Kyusho attacks. Asecondary layer of information inherent in this productionexposed hidden purpose for many moveswithin Martial Arts Forms. But itgoes deeper still.

A third layer was how to get past these protections. Now I know this was obvious to all just by the first layerpresentation, but it also demonstrated how to deal withthe phenomenon of the "Non Responder". This is therare 5% individual that typical Kyusho methods do notwork on due to variation in physiological structure (iedeeper set nerve or higher sensory thresholds asexample). The processes explained and demonstratedhow to use this on non-responder types, but moreimportant on adrenalized attackers. Yet another level inthis understanding can aid those who use the healthmethods to help people in a more profound way gettingpast resistive issues.

All of the DVDS have these layers that emerge to theviewer after much physical hands on experience isattained. As you use the surface layer information and

assimilate the skil ls, more and more of theseunfolding levels are revealed.

Vital Points

The first DVD was an introduction and overview ofKyusho and the various ideas that had evolved at that time.It introduced the 3 main revivals as a multifacetedinstructional for all future skills. Although called revivals orways to fix the body function you stopped applying theKyusho, it presented the idea of what Kyusho really is.Using Kyusho we actually cause a functional imbalancethat the brain can not readily or immediately balance on itsown. Left alone these imbalances will be fixed, however inthat time or process there can be adverse effect such asprolonged dizziness, nausea, impaired vision, diarrhea, headache and others. What these revivals do is instructthe user to balance the functionality quickly to prevent orremove these outcomes. This it accomplished with atransfer of internal neurological messaging, via and

external energetic transfer or stimulation. Thus thepractitioner has begun the process of understanding thephysiological nature of man and how profound aninfluence over it they actually have, the basis of all

Kyusho.

The second DVD was devoted to the anatomical andphysiological functionality of the arms. Surface descriptioninvolved pain induction, loss of muscle or motor control, reflexive and body reactions and methods to enact them.Deeper levels depict how the nerves are situated betweenother structures that actually serve to protect them, butmore rapidly and efficiently to access them in a challengingmobile application. This served as an idea (later expandedon in the seizing DVD)... Not as the only method. Theideology of Targets and Tools becoming the focus asopposed to techniques that fail under fast aggressive, spontaneous and stressful need was another layer as well, preparing the mind and spirit for subsequent training.Kyusho is not locked into set technique, but rather freeflowing and open to each individual's aptitude and abilities.

The third DVD in the series demonstrated the powerfuleffect Kyusho can have on the body, as we explored theanatomical structure of the head. Along with Building on areflexive system of neural programmed response (not to bethought of as NLP), training which was unique in Kyusho, itexpanded into a synergistic approach developing accurateand powerful responses. From the myriad of programmingdrills, we successfully pushed far beyond other trainingmethods of the day. The long criticized static KO was putto rest and brought Kyusho into reality for real protection. Many Kyusho practit ioners found that they wereaccidentally KO'ing their training partners during lighthanded practice. This created the foundation to build assurprise and accuracy was far superior to static method ortechnique training. Deeper aspects included the reductionof the recipients Iron Shirt (covered in greater detail later inthe series), along with what many Kyusho proponentsthought they needed in their study…”Polarity”.

The fourth DVD was devoted to the weaker targets of thebody which are substantially more difficult to access.Difficulties include clothing, arm protection, targets belowsite line and more. We once again included a drill to makethese targets accessible instinctively within a spontaneousmethodology. At the surface the target access appears tobe the soul lesson, as with all the DVD's. However thereare many additional layers such as organ attack as well astactics that afflict you under stress. The dynamics anddifficulties in targeting and adrenalized and highly mobilebody instill the need for control and or body positioningfirst to be able to enact in reality. So just as Kyushoattacks deeper levels of the human so to do its variouscomponents, once the surface material is assimilated.

The Fifth DVD was devoted to thevulnerabilities of the legs; being nerves, muscles, blood vessels, muscle spindlecells and others. Again at surface level thetargets are extremely powerful and capableof even rendering the personunconsciousness. It is also where thetargets have a duality, stability & motion orattacking weapons… unique possibilitiestherefore exist. The Martial Arts stanceswere developed in part to protect the legsand understanding through experience what

each does and what vulnerability theyalso open is crucial to your overalleducation. Actually they must also befully trained in both arenas so that yourlegs as well as arms can successfully

target these powerful tools. But italso has many deeperramifications in regard to thebrains stabil ity, balance andcontrol of the nervous system. Itis the flux and transitional

attributes that are a key in thislevel of work, but rarelyunderstood without muchexperience. This is a veryimportant key but too vast forthe scope of this article.

Vital Points

The sixth DVD was to demonstrate at the surface leveleasy ways to weaken the body so the opponent falls bytheir own loss of functionality with far less physical actionor risk on your part for counter measures. These simpleone step targeting methods did far more though as itreleased the Martial Artist fully from technique and countertechnique approach in training. But again several layersare presented for the advancing man. This level we learnto weaken the base as the balance is disturbs. As thebrain via the body fights to regain that balance is itsweakest time. Yes the takedowns are great and veryefficient... Maybe all you need for your personal skill goals, but if you plan on advancing to higher levels the deeperlessons must be understood.

The seventh DVD was concentrated in ground fightingapplication at surface levels with some targets that couldweaken the opponent, escape certain positions, control orsubmit the opponent. The deeper level was to aid the groundfighter in how to become more efficient or think of new waysof working their current methods. These were not techniquesbut descriptions of the sensitive and vital targets that took lesspower to cause the pain, dysfunction or control, to beassimilated no matter what style or methods you do. But aneven deeper issue is learning from the opponent's resistancehow best to capitalize and read this restriction (again laterdetail in the Iron Shirt DVD). As example; anytime a persontakes a position of strength they cause a simultaneousweakness.... the training not only helped he practitioner realizethese, but how best to access them. Once you have theinnate ability to flow past a strength to a weakness, you havebecome far more formidable.

Vital Points

“It has been a long journeywith you and

Budo International in orderto reveal the ancientmethod of Kyusho.

It has not only been veryrewarding, it has spread

throughout the world sincethis release, empowering a

great individuals, groups and styles”

“As the old expression goes, "when the student is ready the teacher

appears"… the teacher is within yourself andonce you experience the Kyusho, your arts will never be the same!”

The 8th DVD was admittedly the most confusing forpeople as the joint locks were so well known it was difficultfor many to get past prior training and use the nervestructures over the mechanical lock. However by learningthe nerves to a higher degree and new skill set, the tactileaspects substantially rose in those that assimilated it. Butagain several other layers exist that aid the practitioner to agreater degree. For example it is a visual, tactile, empathetic and therefore valid way to learn andunderstand the energetic quotient when using Kyusho andits depth of effect on the body. All the correct visual cuesare depicted when the nerves are attacked from thesestretched positions (another deeper layer)… that help thepractitioner realize the internal neurological imbalance ordysfunction they inflict. This is a valid and honestvalidation of your personal skill… and what Kyushoinstructors must look for to fully understand the depth ofthe practitioners attack.

The 9th level DVD presented even greater barrierchallenge for most not so much in the difficulty tophysically utilize, but mentally accept for Kyusho againstweapon attacks and was the most contested. Theapproach, idea and simplicity were difficult for most at thebeginning. This of course was until assimilated andnatural. It's hidden facets are numerous, but to list a few, itis the concept of entering not only for safety but for theinitiation of Kyusho you will not stop an attacker byretreating. It contains the simple answer of simultaneouslybreaking the opponents balance, forward range of motion, mobility and defense. In the more internal side the body isswitched from motor function to sensory to overwhelm theconscious mind and physiological attributes of it. Thisbegins a deep study in neural programing of later levels.

The 10th DVD… Then came theshocker... The DVD that was ridiculed ashaving nothing to do with Martial Arts (itreally does), but sold out most languageadditions in weeks. The intimacyenhancement production illustrated not justsome ideas for enhance sexual pleasure, but more importantly the idea of nervelocation and investigation on a more subtlebasis. When we power through certainKyusho targets, we gain good effects. Butto advance in tactile understanding andcapability we need to slow the aggressiveonly approach. Digging even deeper intowhat benefits this has for the Kyushopractitioner, the concept of time delay oradvancement in affects, arises… veryadvanced and amazing information… andpractice is great.

The 11th DVD on energetic transfer was of coursepopular as the term KO was emblazoned across the cover.People believed it would be a collection of KOs they couldcopy or learn… (as if the many in prior DVDS was notenough), instead it is a study in stimulating the opponentsnervous system are varying degree and in varying location. The concept of electrical conduction was addressed inanother way to help clarify the process for those inKyusho… scientific terms not used prior. The deeperbenefits or information lay in the discovery and ability inproducing certain vibratory complications in the opponent(yes you must really have a good base in Kyusho to seethis). Once this level is achieved along with the prior levels, you could be self-perpetuating in your skills with Kyushoand your understanding to help others.

The 12th DVD was working Kyusho within classicalforms to unlock the secrets within the form and unleash thepotentials for the practitioner. The base of the lesson wasto illustrate that what is seen in any form, is not a completepicture and that with a simple change in thinking, youcould at minimum double your abilities and possibilities. This was largely shown by using the ideas that the blockscould be strikes, the hand positions were multifacetedweapons and withdrawing motions of the Wing Chun formas an attack. There is far more this video explains to helpanyone take any form and develop vast potential, forpractice, protection or instructional ideas. It also fullyexplained yin and yang relations and how most of us reliedonly on one of these concepts until introduced to the VitalPoints involved. One of the deeper concepts was in theaffect differential on the negative attack... Or the idea thatyou are not always overloading the opponent, but alsolearning the way to drain their personal ability, power orenergy. An infinite library is at your fingertips with thisinformation.

The 13th DVD is on the Iron Shirt and as ominous ormystical as sounds, it is a simple but deeper Much Deeper)understanding of Kyusho. It delves into reading the bodyphysiology far beyond the tactile approach of the grapplingDVD. This is in my estimation the most profoundinformation related to Kyusho. On the surface it teachesus to protect our more vital areas, on a secondary level ittells us how to get past these protections. A deeper levelyet gives us a great understanding on the conscious brainscontrol and monitoring of the physiological functionality. So all the Kyusho displayed and explained relate to thislevel of comprehension and control. And is all one needsto be well situated in this skill, but it is still only the first20%. We realize most will be satisfied with this skillattainment and be far better in their styles and possibility...In fact they will never be able to return to the pure physicaltraditional arts without involving Kyusho. However for theperpetually advancing man there is more and with evengreater reward. And if you look closer at this film you willget a glimpse and insight of this potential... This wasground breaking information in Kyusho; as were most ofthe videos... But breaking barriers and continuouslyadvancing the art and skill demands it.

The 14th DVD was a follow up on the prior wing Chunand Iron Shirt DVDS to fully illustrate what looking deeplyat any action can lead you to unlimited self-potential. Sothis DVD explores a simple 5 motion hand pattern (found inthe Sil Nim Tao form of DVD 12) unlocked and expandedupon via Kyusho to show you the infinite amount ofpotential Kyusho unlocks for you. In addition it it is linkedto the first 9 DVDS (curriculum order) to further illustratethat the curriculum contained in the DVDS is not a stand-alone format, but fully and universally adaptable to yourpersonal needs or passions. One of the deeper conceptswas the ability to tacticly feel the resistances or openingsof the opponent (in part, the essence of the Iron Shirt). This is a crucial topic in Kyusho and must be fully realizedfor a practitioner to advance to their optimal potentials.

The 16th DVD broke totally new ground to Kyusho practitioners andMartial Artists worldwide… the secrets of compression. Yes everyoneknew you could compress certain arteries and cause a Vaso VagalSycope (feinting) as in the blood choke on the carotid artery. But whatwas not known is that the same mechanism could be also used on thenerves or even more remote locations like the inner ankle to cause thesame affects. There was also the speed or efficiency to cause instantdysfunction as opposed to time delayed on blood attack alone... And allof this still only the surface of the matter in compressions. We addeddifferent revivals to handle this new Kyusho reality as well as weseparated the Dim Mak from the Kyusho to set the record straight (theyare not the same thing)! We have a first glimpse of the Dim Mak asintended blood attack, not TCM or acupuncture points, but real vascularvessels and bodies accessible to attack. The deeper information lays inthe legendary "delayed" aspects and far more, but for later discussion.

The 17th DVD opened and ancient artifact of the specializedweapons to better achieve the Kyusho attacks, actuate the DimMak attacks and increase the skill for all practitioners. On thesurface we explained the 6 hands presented in the ancient Bubishi(many great Karate Instructors labeled the Bible of Karate). Thesehands not only fit the anatomical structures to access the vitaltargets to a higher degree, but also depicted the secret energetictransference of kinetic energy most miss in the beginning of theirKyusho training. This is what makes Kyusho seem effortless aswell as substantially increase the accuracy even in dynamicstressed action. As if this was not enough it also contained manylevels of transitional impacts and explained why even the oldest ofthe old instructors retained their fighting skills far past the point inlife where speed, power and agility was diminishing. But moreimportantly it set the stage for the third phase of Kyusho (at thistime only the first phase was being openly taught, demonstrated ordiscussed).

The 18th DVD was a further examination of one weaponof the prior 6, to illustrate the infinite scope a correct andpowerful but simple tool can be. On the surface itillustrated the correct formation of the hand for Kyusho, why it worked as it did and how best to utilize it on anumber of targets many would not consider using it on(until Kyusho). Deeper levels exposed the compressionmethods of DVD 15 in a smaller scale attack with the samedevastating effects to both Kyusho and Dim Mak. And asa special affiliated informational aspect the attack waseven demonstrated as an attack to the brain stem and thedepth of incapacitation Kyusho can have with even a singleweapon and small range of motion. This raised the levelfar above the Dim Mak applications in intensity as well asnew levels of possibility most only conjecture on, here isdemonstrated. And yes still not the full range of what youwill see in this information as time goes on… and still onlythe first 20% of Kyusho with the majority still left torelease… on a deeper anatomical and scientific basis.

The 19th DVD was titled First Aid but it was far from justthis level of Kyusho Application, reversal or remedy. Thesurface level demonstrated the attacks and countermeasures of remedy… a revelation in Kyusho even forthose involved for decades as this was all new to them, butour dual mission from the start. The deeper levels lay inthe interconnections exposed, these clarified what manyobserve while doing Kyusho, but did not make theconnections. We not only made these connections butvalidated and verified them through a host of medicalprofessionals in the neurological fields… then of course inactual application to share with you. This detail and crossresearch is why we have excelled in the field far beyondthe others and how we based our reality trainingprograms… we won't teach what will not work in realstress and need. There are again even deeper layersinvolved in this production, but most important tounderstand is this concept is also the key to unlocking allof the DVDS as explained, by using reverse engineeringprocesses. But this is not just for Kyusho, it holds for anyMartial Art... It is a key for you to see deeper into any style.

Extra Releases

Kyusho Top Ten (DVD 15) was an extraDVD laced in the middle of the curriculumand a spur of the moment shooting. Typicallywhen I got to Madrid, Spain… we would setaside 2 days of Filming at Budo InternationalHeadquarters and get two films done eachday. All of these DVD's were not scripted orrehearsed, they are simply spontaneousinstructional classes as it is more comfortableand interesting this way. The only DVD tofollow a list was the first aid as we did notwant to miss any of the levels, but still notscripted and spontaneous). This timehowever we rolled right through the third andfourth videos in half the time leaving a halfday of shooting time open. So on animpromptu urge we filmed this video whichwas a compilation of my top ten targets inKyusho. We also wanted to change theformat a bit and take it outside to show somesimple self-protection ideas using thesetargets. This extra DVD made on a whimbecame Budo Internationals Top selling DVDin it's long history… and still stands as a veryconcise and simple idea of real self-protection.

TKD Series DVD 20 was a special requestfrom the chief representative of the ITF inTaiwan, Horacio Daniel Obon. He had seenKyusho and began learning and traveling to

seminars all over the world (not an easy accomplishmentfrom Taiwan). He was convinced that Taekwondo couldbenefit greatly from Kyusho and in this belief he asked me todo a collaborative curriculum for the style. I of courseaccepted the challenge (never practicing TKD) and began aDVD series. This first release adopted the first 9 levels ofthe above Kyusho Curriculum and worked them all throughtheir first Pattern called Chong Ji. Just prior to productionof this filmed course, Mr. Obon submitted the information, rough film and the design of a complete curriculum to the

ITF leader in Korea and son of the Founder General Choi, Grandmaster ChoiJung Hwa… who stated his support and blessings… look for more releases inthe future, already filmed and ready for production.

Women's Self Protection DVD 21 was the latest release and the secondproduction not filmed at Budo… as well as the start of a new approach toKyusho. As stated all must evolve and advance so as not to become staleand insignificant, Kyusho is no different. This DVD at surface level is a simple, effective method of quick and successful use of Kyusho for self-protection.The model Daniele Hailey was hired as a model with no prior experience. Aswe filmed the way to train the lady, all the success and affects were real andof her doing. She accepted fully what we asked her to do and she did iteasily. When we went outside for a bit more realistic testing, it wasspontaneous for her… again illustrating that in one instructional session shehad the skill to protect herself with Kyusho. On a deeper level we are workingwith cross neural programing and a process we resurrected form the AncientBubishi… and it underlays the 3rd phase of Kyusho as well in its profound andescalating advancement of Kyusho.

So for all of the multiple thousands of supporterswho purchased these productions... Even those Itaught during the filming, Go back now after yougained the first layers of skill. When you view themagain more will be seen.... As the old expression goes,"when the student is ready the teacher appears"… theteacher is within yourself and once you experience theKyusho, your arts will never be the same!

I must also thank the great people of Budo for over12 years now and with steadfast interest andenthusiasm for the Kyusho Project. First andforemost is Alfredo Tucci, Directing Manager of BudoInternational Publications, Co. now a dear friend and aguiding light for all in the Martial Arts. I remember thefirst time meeting him, pleasant, cordial and with greatenthusiasm, optimism and energy. He had heard theclaims of Kyusho and was himself skeptical, but opento explore the idea. He sat in on the first filming andwitnessed the new approach (based on an ancientskill)… he was convinced and has fully supported thisin belief of it's worth to the Martial Arts as a whole. AhJavier, what can I say as you have taken these rawfilms and created great viewing experiences for thepeople. Marga for the magazine production, Williamand all the staff for your hospitality and patience forthe large number of people I brought into film… not aneasy crowd to work with.

And of course to all that offered themselves for thepain, dysfunction and states of unconsciousness orillness (common on the Dim Mak Applications), yougave of yourselves to help others learn. Most will neverrealize this pain or experiences you went throughfor the education of many, but I thank all ofyou. Many people have come andgone, some forming their owngroups, others for otherreasons… but all at onetime gave you a bit ofthemselves tohelp you.

SATRIA FIGHTING ARTSMartial Arts of Nusantara

It gives me great joy to introduce the Satria Fighting Artsto Budo International readers. I will be going through thesyllabus of the SFA in a chronological, technical and tacticalfashion, but I always like to start from the very beginning togive you a good understanding, and a brief background his-tory of myself, and my journey in the SFA. As we go along,I will give you insight into some of our training methods, thephilosophy and the principles of our practice, passed down tome by my late teacher, Guru Ma Prem.

MY BACKGROUND AND HISTORYAs a young boy growing up in one of the roughest parts of London, I knew from a

very young age that in order to survive the constant bullying that I encountered fromearly school years, I needed to learn how to defend myself quickly. My father hadboxed in the army where he served in Spain, so growing up, he taught me a thing ortwo in boxing. I practiced different systems, Wing Chun was my first, but I found itdidn't help me as I continued to get beaten up. I was about 11 years old when I metmy first real teacher, Sifu Gerry Tann. He taught me the art of Kuntao, a ferociousstreet fighting system, and I trained with him until I was about 19 years old. Gerry hadentered myself, and some of his senior students to various tournaments, which wedominated for several years. Then in 1989, during the open tournament at theBirmingham National Championship, I had an experience on the mat that wouldchange the course of my path. My training with Gerry had come to an end and headvised me to do a seven days fast, which led me to my next teacher.

VISION OF A FEMALE WARRIOROn the seventh day of my fast, I had a clear vision of an Indonesian female warrior

moving in a dance-like form, a soft fluid movement in motion that I had not yet seen. Iwas barely twenty years of age, and I could sense change was coming. I felt that myevolution was leading me this way and I knew I just had to trust it. I had no ideawhere to go, or who to see, but going to Holland felt right. Whilst asleep on the train, Ifelt an urge to wake up and immediately got out at Rotterdam and headed towardsthe Town Centre. Along the way, there was an Indonesian restaurant called RadenMas. It was still early in the morning, and the restaurant was closed. Below therestaurant was a shop that sold clay pots and ornaments, which was open. So Idecided to enquire about Pencak Silat. The shop attendant was opening her mail, and had no idea what I was talking about. At that very moment, she opened up a flyerwith information on Guru Ma Prem, Pencak Silat, Ayurveda, Alpha training, etc., and atelephone number. As I was about to leave, she called me back and handed me theflyer! Of course, by now, I knew this just had to be it!!

GURU MA Guru Ma Prem was born of a Royal Javanese family, raised in the outskirts of Java

Barat, in a village called Bandung. During the time of the Japanese occupation, shemoved to Holland like so many other Indonesians during the 1940's and 1950's. Shehad grown up with Pencak Silat, traditional Indonesian dance and Javanesemysticism as a way of life. She was a great influence amongst the Indonesiancommunity, and often protected her people from the control of the Dutch authorities. She was highly evolved and very knowledgeable, wrote several books on esotericliterature, which to this day are used at the Sphinx University. She set up the school(De Sphinx University) and taught Pencak Silat, Esoteric studies, Religious studies,

Alpha training, Yoga and Ayurveda as part ofa full and comprehensive syllabus.

After many years of studying with her, travelling back and forth from London, GuruMa, taught me the principles and exercisesthat would open up my body and mind to thisbeautiful art, leaving me with the mostincredible keys to understanding the naturalflow of bodily motion and movement. In1999, after collating all the training methodsand principles she had taught me, both sheand I, decided to put it together methodically,to teach and help students to learn itsystematically. Hence, the SATRIA(WARRIOR) FIGHTING ARTS - the practice ofthe Ancient Arts into Modern Day, wasbirthed. Out of this also came SATRIAYOGA, a training method based on its 144postures, practiced with the principles ofyoga along with specific breathing exercises.

During my time with her, I had also visitedher homeland, Indonesia (former Nusantara)on several occasions, learning differnentstyles of Silat, completing Cimande withGuru Makmur, Silat Wali Mahmud withPendekar Jumhi, a family style of MinangSilat with Bapak Rusli, and a family style ofPadang with Guru Asnan, all of which I teachseparate to the Satria Fighitng Arts.

Sadly, Guru Ma passed away on 13th June2012, and her eldest son, Chris, becamesuccessor of the university in Rotterdam.

THE SATRIA FIGHTING ARTS“Why the name, Satria Fighting Arts?”

Well, having trained in so many different artsand after completing different styles of Silat, Irealized that Guru Ma was teaching me muchmore than just a bunch of techniques, applications, and fighting methods. She wasteaching me the way of life of the WarriorArts. The Satrias (or in Sanskrit, 'Kshatriya')were protectors of the weak, the poor, theneedy, helpers of the frai l in theircommunities and were also men and womenof light and inspiration.

Guru Ma taught me postures, exercises, techniques and methods of training that werealways pointing to a deeper and more unifiedway of life. A life that encourages one towalk closer to nature and to learn the manylessons we encounter in our lives.

What is also unique about the SFA is that ithas its own Yoga system (SATRIA YOGA).My wife, Laarni is the main Representativeand Chief Instructor of this syllabus, and alsodoes Instructor Courses around Europe.

“the way of lifeof the Warrior

Arts. TheSatrias (or in

Sanskrit,'Kshatriya')”

Satria Yoga can be practiced as a supplement to the SFA, but it canalso stand as an individual practice to condition and strengthen thebody, amongst many other benefits.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE S.F.A.The structure of SATRIA FIGHTING ARTS covers every aspect

of the fighting arts with its physical, technical and mental trainingmethods. It covers all aspects of physical conditioning, - speed, strength, power, agility, mobility, endurance, flexibility, relaxation, tendon strength and special breathing methods to enhance all ofthe above. On a technical level, it covers 'striking' with use of thewhole body, hard and soft parts, throws, locks, chokes, ground fighting, pins, traps, evasions, feints, sweeps, grabs, multiples attackers, weapons (both hard andsoft, long and short). Mental training includesconcentration, cognitive training andmeditations.

The SFA has 144 base postures (muchmore when broken down) that aredivided into both 'male' and 'female'positions. These postures areexpressed through a dancecalled the 'Kembangan'. Withthis dance, the posturesbecome movements that getabsorbed by the student, and are then owned andexpressed naturallythrough their individualframe, own character andpersonality. No two personswill ever move the same.

Phase 1 - 'SEMBAH' - the original 'greeting'amongst south-east Asians. From this posture, onelearns the basics of Bela Diri (self-defense), learninghow to use correct structure and correct bio-mechanics with striking and some evasions. Duringthis phase, the student learn accuracy, control, speed, focus, balance, alignment, fluidity and awareness.Partner drills, pad work and light sparring are allimplemented in this phase.

Phase 2 - 'RETURNING TO THE GROUND' -through the postures (both male and female) of Kucing(Cat), Harimau (Tiger), Buaya (Crocodile) and KuraKura (Turtle), one learns all fighting principles andtechniques that cover ground fighting in its entirety.Heavy emphasis is placed on conditioning the body tobecome strong, quick and fluid.

Phase 3 - 'GARUDA' - covers twelve different steps(six male and six female) and all angles. The Garudapostures are designed to teach students quick fluidstriking, evasions that wil l work against multipleattackers, and weapons training. It has no groundelement except for one posture and is mainly used for

Indonesian Arts

upright fighting, one-to-one or against multiple attackers. Its mainstrength is the structure it moves in - protected, yet lighting quick!

Phase 4 - 'GERAK -GERIK DAN GARUDA OLEH URAT NAPAS'- Gerak-Gerik means 'appropriate action and reaction' and is anold training method to enhance and expand the understanding ofpossible applications, and explore new ones. It is also used todevelop sensitivity and body awareness. This is alsoaccompanied with breathing in postures, helping the body to openmore and strengthen the tendons, muscles and fascia. Thismethod of training is deeply influenced by Ilmu Kesadaran

(knowledge of body consciousness).

PHASE 5 - 'SARANG LABAN LABAN'(Spider Web) - This is a tactical phase of

training that teaches students how to setup traps, very much like a chess game,

and improves the ability to fight atclose range, mid, long, againstmultiple attackers, tricking, anglesof striking to nerve points, morebreathing exercises to enhancestamina as well as knowledge ofenergetic pathways in thebody.

“Guru Ma taughtme postures,

exercises,techniques and

methods of trainingthat were always

pointing to a deeperand more unified

way of life.”

Silat

“The structure ofSATRIA FIGHTINGARTS covers every

aspect of the fightingarts with its physical, technical and mentaltraining methods.”

PHASE 6 - 'THE KEMBANAGAN' (Flower Dance) - Thisphase, in my opinion, is the most beautiful, yet mostmisunderstood, and the part that Ma had emphasized themost. It is the phase in which a student brings togethereverything he/she have learnt into a fluid dance that is alsoused in sparring and for entering the 'sasaran' (trainingarea). As the student continues to develop, theKembangan becomes a tool for many things includinghealing and balancing their own body and energy levels.

PHASE 7 - 'WEAPONS TRAINING' - The SFA Weaponstraining is a very sophisticated method of training withboth soft and hard weapons, long and short and a mixtureof all. Some of the weapons used are Pisau Bedik, PisauBelati, Pisau Badik (straight short, long and curved knives),Golok (short thick knife), Karambit (curved clawblade)…Sepasang Pedang Pendek (mid-range sword, double and single), Sebiah Keris, Sebialh Keris Berleuk,(straight and curved Keris), Soft (female) weapons includethe Destar (head wrap) Selendang (scarf), Sarong (hip-waist wrap).

PHASE 8 - 'THE SACRED KERIS' - In this phase, deeper knowledge of the anatomy and nerve points aretaught through sixteen postures that cover a total of 108parts of the body.

PHASE 9 - 'ILMUS NAPAS' - In this phase, fivedifferent breathing exercises are taught. These breathingexercises help to strengthen the whole body of thepractitioner, helping him/her to withstand blows better, increase softness, hardness, lightness, stability as well asfluidity.

PHASE 10 - 'FULL UNIFORM' or 'LOTUSKEMBANGAN' - this phase is the complete marriage ofthe male and female postures and energies, including all

that has been learnt and expressed through theKembangan.

In these articles, I will not only be writing about the SFA,but I will also give you insight into all the other Silat stylesthat I learnt and completed, hoping to give you a deeperunderstanding of the beautiful Indonesian arts.

In order to maintain the highest qualityinstructors, we at ANA (Avi NardiaAcademy) use the Gideon test. At anygiven time, we have dozens of KAPAPinstructor candidates in levels 1-4 of ourprogram. Depending upon the person, successful completion of the KAPAPinstructor program is either very easy,or else completely impossible.

suddenly appear and claim to be the “Real Jeet Kun Do?”

Avi Nardia

“it is better to search for15 years to find the rightteacher, than to study for15 years with the wrong

teacher”

The story of Gideon tells us how Godquickly distinguished the 300 bestwarriors from amongst 32.000soldiers. First God instructedGideon to proclaim, “Whoever isafraid and trembling, let himreturn and depart from MountGilead.” In response to the Lord'sdirective, two-thirds of thesoldiers retired. With tenthousand men still remaining,God told Gideon that there werestill too many men. He toldGideon to march his men downthe hill, as though they weregoing to attack the enemy. As the army passed by a

body of water, Gideon watchedthe men stop at the water'sedge to drink. Most of the menset their shields and spearsdown, dropped to their knees, and drank hearti ly with bothhands as a cup. Gideon orderedthose men to stand in onecompany. There were a few warriors who

took water differently. These soldierscautiously stooped at the riverbankwith their spears and shields in their righthands while cupping water with their left

hands. If the enemy would suddenly appear, theywould be ready. God said to Gideon, “These are the men

whom I have chosen to set Israel free.”Even though there were only 300 men in this

company, every one of them embodied the spiritof a true warrior. They were focused on theirpurpose and held their bearing in spite of thirstand distraction. They were vigilant - neitherwould they be victims of a surprise attack, norwould they miss their opportunity to seizevictory at the opportune moment. That is how Gideon selected 300 warriors

from amongst 32.000 men.

With enough time and effort, virtually anyone can gain thetechnical and tactical skil ls tobecome a KAPAP instructor. However, the biggest test in KAPAPis to demonstrate integrity - anattribute which candidates eitherembody completely, or not at all.For instance, those who only seekto collect ego certificates will findour KAPAP program impossible. Thus, we use the Gideon test todistinguish our team members.

I have written before that it is better to search for 15 years tofind the right teacher, than to study for 15 years with thewrong teacher. In KAPAP, we think that it's also about findingthe right students.Fifteen years ago, I began to open my teachings to civilians.

Before that time, I had only taught my system of KAPAP to selectmilitary and police personnel in Israel. As the first step of opening KAPAP, we ran a course called

Kapap Level One Instructor and it was a full 5 days basictraining. The primary objective of the course was to assess howmuch progress the students would have to make in order to becalled full KAPAP teachers. I emphasized that the course was more like an “interview”

phase for the students. Even though I read the student'scredentials and many where ranked as “experts”, they quickly

demonstrated that their previous ranking wasfar from reality when it came to fighting onthe mat.

These candidates, came from aparticular modern martial art thatspecifically states it is “Not TraditionalMartial Arts - It's No Nonsense

Martial Arts”. When they came tous to learn KAPAP, the top system, our assessment was that theywere 'ful l ' of nonsense andnothing more. They carriedexaggerated titles and their

Israeli Self Defense

idea of self-defense was based on three basic moves with lots ofsound effects (fu, fu, fu…) and choreography.Even if a candidate has low skill, I am happy to teach them as

long as they have a good heart and maintain integrity. I havenever turned a student away merely because they lackedphysical talent (in fact, one of my most rewarding projects wasto teach handicapped children). While I have no shortage ofinstructor candidates who want to learn the physical skills ofKAPAP, only a a fraction our candidates are interested inupholding our morals and ethics. At ANA (Avi Nardia Academy) we constantly work to

distinguish our Gideon Fighters/Instructors. In orderto find those who will lead KAPAPinto the future we actively weedout others who only chasecertificates and titles butfail to behave l ikeprofessionals. Thisconstant process

Avi Nardia

ensures that ourteam maintains thehighest standards. After all, Gideon could

have instructed his troops tomaintain their weapons.Instead, he preferred to observetheir actions in order to learn abouttheir nature. Similarly, I believe the fastest way to to find outif a person is trustworthy is to afford them your trust and seeif they will maintain it each day. Along this route, some peopleforget that KAPAP Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 are a screeningprocess. If one of my students forgets morals, ethics, integrity, or skills development, they fail the Gideon test.Gideon dismissed the soldiers who momentarily set their

shields and spears aside. At Avi Nardia Academy, wedismiss those whom set their morals and ethics aside. This is the test of a person's spirit. We can try to teachtechniques and fix errors but without the right spirit, one can't learn much.So far, only a very small number of KAPAP

instructors have passed all four levels. We giveLevel 1 certificates so we can begin to learn whopeople really are. I say that I never 'test' mystudents. Rather, people reveal their owncharacter through their actions. If someone failsthe Gideon test at any level, they fail completelyand are out of KAPAP.

I can only smile when I see new“grandmasters” appear in Israeli Martial Artswho have failed KAPAP or simply watched ourDVDs. Suddenly, techniques which are uniqueto KAPAP become the “New Official Curriculum”

in their systems.Anyone who is not my student who claims to

teach KAPAP or “the real KAPAP” is either dishonestor deranged. Can you imagine during Bruce Lee'slifetime that a person would suddenly appear and claimto be the “Real Jeet Kun Do?” Much to my surprise, some of my former students who only learned a smallfraction of KAPAP, now open their own “federation” andclaim to be the “Real KAPAP”. There are other people whoI have never even met whom claim to teach KAPAP.Nobody can be the “Real KAPAP” if they never learned

the first lesson: Integrity. There is a saying, don't argue withstupid people, or they will drag you down to their level andbeat you with experience. It's funny and true. There are times when one must fight but mostly the way of

a zen warrior is to allow ones foes to destroy themselves. At Avi Nardia Academy, we ask people to either stay real,or stay real far away.As the founder of KAPAP combatives I lead KAPAP

THE “TITLES EPIDEMIC”

By Grandmaster John Pellegrini

In the last few issues wehave discussed some veryserious and controversialtopics, so, for this article, Idecided it was time for afun look at one of theMartial Arts' most trivial(but sti l l extremelycontroversial) concerns: theplethora of titles used andmisused by martial arts

instructors. But firsta l ittle historicalinformation…

Combat Hapkido

artial arts t it les, as usedtoday, are a fair ly recentinnovation that started in theearly 1950s. Until then, therewere only a few basichonorifics designed to simply

separate the students from the teachers and toshow respect to the senior members of afamily, clan or guild. With the introduction andsubsequent commercialization of Asian martialarts in the West, the proliferation of titles beingused by instructors started to take hold and hasnow reached epidemic (some would saycomical) proportions. Today, it is no longerenough to be recognized or addressed simplyas a “Master” or “Grandmaster”. Many feel thatthey must use additional titles to assert theirlofty position in the martial arts hierarchy. Itdoes not matter to them (or they do not realize)that some of those tit les are redundant, inappropriate or incorrect; they sound soimportant, so irresistibly exotic that they mustbe added to one's name. I will prove my point(and amuse you in the process) with a fewexamples. A few years ago, I noticed thatsome already prominent Grandmasters werenot satisfied with that very high title and startedusing “Great Grandmaster” and even “SupremeGrandmaster”(what's next? “Great-GreatGrandmaster”? How “Great” can anyone be?What about “Ultimate Grandmaster”? Or whynot “Exalted Great Grandmaster” or maybeeven “Sublime-Devine Grandmaster”?).

Another example is the shameless use ofacademic tit les such as Doctor andProfessor casually appropriated from officialinstitutions. Let's be honest…there is noreal, legitimate, Martial Arts Universityissuing Doctoral degrees or Professorships inthe Martial Arts. So how do you obtain thosetitles? It's easy… just believe that you are“entitled” (pun intended) and use them. Bythe way, they are even more impressive whenused in conjunction with other titles, forexample: “Grandmaster Professor XYZ” or“Supreme Grandmaster Doctor XYZ”.But the real interesting part of thisphenomenon comes with the use of Asianlanguages titles , mostly Japanese, Chineseand Korean (although Filipino andIndonesian are also represented). Themost popular and beloved is the title“Sensei”, which in Japanese simplymeans “senior” and recognizes aperson's proficiency and skill in anart or profession, such as schoolteacher, doctor, lawyer, writer, painter, musician, etc.. Iparticularly like the use of thistitle in its “Americanized”version: placed BEFORE thename, as in “Sensei Joe”,instead of its proper useAFTER the last name, as in“Shimabuku Sensei”. Ihave also

encountered this versatile term used asreinforcement for other titles, as in “MasterSensei XYZ” or, even more daringly (and with amulti-cultural flair, mixing Japanese and Korean)as “Sabumnim Sensei XYZ”. The senselessredundancy continues with gems such“Grandmaster Shihan XYZ” (Grandmaster-chiefinstructor of a dojo) and “Hanshi Grandmaster”(senior master-Grandmaster). Concluding theJapanese variety, is the over-used and misusedtitle “Soke” which many believe to mean“Founder”. However, you will never find anauthentic, genuine Japanese founder of a martialart use the term “Soke”, only American andEuropean instructors who claim to have“created” a new martial art use it before or aftertheir names, often in addition to the other titles. So you will find impressive sounding appellationssuch as “Soke Sensei XYZ” or “GrandmasterXYZ, Soke”. And it does not matter if the martialart in question is Korean, Chinese or even anAmerican concoction…. the word “Soke” is sosexy that it crosses all cultural borders andinstantly adds status and credibility to any 25years old “founder”! The simple truth is that thehistorical and correct meaning of the word“Soke” is “original artistic tradition of a family orclan” established over generations. But let's notworry about those minor details. The mixing, redundancy and overuse of titlesis not associated with any specific martial artor nationality, although American instructorsseem to excel at this idiosyncrasy and it is notuncommon to find “Master Sensei” and“Kwanjangnim Grandmaster” who are only 20or 30 years old. Chinese martial arts, although not totallyimmune, have, for the most part, escaped theworst of the “tit les epidemic”, probablybecause of cultural differences. Most Chinesemartial arts basically use only the title “Sifu”

(teacher) and, in a fewcases, the title “Sigung”(teacher of teachers),sometimes Americanized as“Grandmaster”.Very few individuals havebeen recognized as “Zong Shi”or “Shi Zu”(founder) and thosetitles are rarely used in the West. But that has not stopped somecourageous souls from comingup with ridiculous innovationslike “Dan” ranking for Tai-Chi. Soit is now possible to seeadvertisements for “SenseiMaster Joe, 7th Dan in Tai-Chi”.Those readers famil iar withmartial arts from the Philippines,Indonesia, Thailand or India canprobably cite many interestinginstances of misuse and abuse oftitles such as “Guru, Guro, Bapak”and others. But I believe that moreproof the real existence of thisepidemic is not necessary. Personally,I don't care what or how many titlesmartial arts instructors like to use, evenwhen it becomes utterly ridiculous andbordering on megalomania. I just thinkthat when it comes to titles (specially self-appointed ones), modesty and humilitywould serve us better if we expect the restof society to respect us and take usseriously. And, paradoxically, if you wantothers to take you seriously, I wouldrecommend that you start by adopting one ofmy life's guiding principles which states:“Never take yourself too seriously and learnhow to laugh at your ego”! I believe that if morepeople followed that advice, there would bemuch less anxiety and conflict in the World.

Original Lameco Eskrima

There is much more to fighting with a knife than simplylearning and demonstrating techniques against a complianttraining partner. The absolute necessity in combat alwaysdictates response and our abilities, if adequate, will determineover-all combative effectiveness. Through reality-based trainingwe seek the ability to apply any technique learned with positiveeffect while under duress, as we are aggressively thrust amidstthe pure uncertainty, chaos and confusion of a violent streetencounter gone badly awry. In such moments, how well we havetrained will either reveal combative truth or through hesitationand neglect we will reveal combative inadequacy. My instructor, Punong Guro Edgar G. Sulite, the founder of

Lameco Eskrima, taught us that how we prepared ourselves intraining would best reflect how we would actually respond when

They say that in the shade of a big tree, another cannot grow; however, the classicsalso affirm that where a big-sized treereaches, a great shadow shelters. The treealongside Guro Dave Gould, what shelteredhim, was undoubtedly from among thebiggest that Eskrima has presented us inrecent times, Edgar Sulite. His ephemeralexistence touched many people and left deepprints in the modern way of understandingthis Filipino Art par excellence. In the shadeof Sulite, the master who today visits ourpages grew and made himself strong. Fromlong and established experience in theWarrior Arts, he found in Lameco Eskrimathe perfect expression of all that he hadbeen searching for, as much from theMartial perspective as from the human. Hiswork is considered as one of the mostadvanced and interesting nowadays, the trueexperts in the matter confirm it, and afterseeing his work in our studios, we alsoconfirm it. He has left you a magnificentinstructional video on one of his specialties, the knife, and with it this article that wehope you enjoy.

forced to defend life and limb in the streets. If we train withweakness and compromise, both will follow us into combatand quickly deliver us to an unacceptable humiliating defeat. For us to keep weakness and compromise from appearing inour ability to defend life and limb, we must first remove themfrom our training environment. Only then will we be free of theirsevere limitations and gross restrictions allowing us to moreeffectively fight with determination and resolve, thereby bettermeeting our ultimate objective of survival. Punong Guro Sulite would often remind us that there are no

“guarantees” in combat, only “fleeting opportunity” at best.Either we will take advantage of those opportunities when theypresent themselves for as long as they exist to us in real time,

Eskrima

or we will not… while facing severe consequences for anyhesitation or failure to act. Most people far underestimate theuncertainty of a combative situation gone terribly wrong. Thereis what you think that you will do in a fight and then there iswhat you actually end up doing out of necessity, which oftentimes will be quite different than that which you initiallyexpected to do. For this reason, we must develop and maintainthe ability to perceive, react, adapt, adjust, locate and relocateany opportunity or unexpected threat faced in combat, until weare able to resolve it and remove any threat dealt within itsentirety. For this reason we must remain ever vigilant in ourtraining with survival being the only acceptable objective to bemet, at any cost. In the recent DVD (Essential Knife) which I made for Budo

International, one of the constant themes for the DVD is toremain constantly aware of your environment and to be able todeploy your weapon (knife) whenever the need unexpectedlyarises. This is an area very much neglected by too manysystems and learned students today. Most people seem tothink that when a violent situation arises, their knife will justsuddenly appear in their hand as if by magic and they will fightvaliantly against a totally compliant opponent who will neverresist any attempt being played out on their life. This could notbe further from the truth; when you are attacked by someonewith a knife, you will literally have less than a second torespond in earnest as you will be forced to deploy your knife indefense of your life. Only then, with knife in hand, can youbegin to effectively fight for your life, hopefully gaining apositive outcome for yourself in your critical time of need.Seriously, what good are knife-fighting techniques if you cannot get to your knife when you need it? So if you cannot get toyour knife, deploy, and engage in less than a second, then youare too slow and at that time death may be free to claim you.Weapon deployment and retention should be a priority in any

weapon-based system and should be trained daily for effect. For example, in Lameco Eskrima, we train weapon deploymentand retention from both hands, as Lameco Eskrima is purely anambidextrous system. Punong Guro Sulite taught us that wehave neither a left nor right hand but rather we have two handsequally capable leaving the hand closest to the mostimmediate threat to inherit and contend with that threat, withsurvival being the end goal to be met. You should train todeploy your blade from the pocket to the starting position 1000times, again and again, until it becomes effortless, as repetitionis the mother of all skills. In Lameco Eskrima we have 9 startingpositions and quickly deploying our blade from the pocket toall of these 9 positions with both hands when the situationrequires it is imperative and is part of our daily training. I carry a primary blade and two back-ups on my person at all

times. One of the back-ups is smaller than the other two and isto be used in a tighter, more cramped environment, for

Eskrima

“Most people seem to thinkthat when a violent

situation arises, their knifewill just suddenly appear intheir hand as if by magicand they will fight valiantlyagainst a totally compliantopponent who will neverresist any attempt beingplayed out on their life”

example, in a car, phone booth, bathroom stall or on theground. We were trained to be able to deploy our back-up blade immediately once we lost contact with theprimary blade due to incidental disarms in combat. So, totrain this at any given time, Punong Guro Sulite wouldsuddenly disarm us and he would press on with anaggressive attack forcing us to deploy our back-up bladeor pay the consequences for the failure to do so, withtime and pressure being very much of essence. Anyone can deploy their blade when given adequate

time to do so at leisure. The real test is being able to doso when a 240-lb. man is aggressively charging down onyou with the intent of l ifting your head from yourshoulders in mortal combat. Only then will you be forcedto deploy your blade under duress while being madeaware of the difficulties and many pressures involved, ornot, in which case you may die. When the pressure is on,you have to quickly respond with intention and failure todo so translates to certain death when engaging a knife. One thing is certain, when the pressure is on, most of uswill become clumsy and make mistakes in our haste, asreality would have it. To be honest, it is better to makethese mistakes in our training environment where theconsequences are less severe than on the streets when itmatters most and where we will be held accountable foreverything that we do, or fail to do. Always rememberthat anytime we make a mistake in combat, anopportunity is born from it with all players having accessto that opportunity. The first one that perceives theopportunity and quickly responds will gain the advantage

leaving the others held accountable for theirfailure to act in a timely manner. The worse place to be when you realize that

something is not working for you is on thestreet as you are laid out before your attackerleaving him to decide if he will be mercifultowards you or brutal. At this time there will benothing more that you can do as your bestefforts were not good enough and now yourfate depends on what your opponent decidesto do with you. None of us can afford to everbe found in this position at any time, and onlythe way that we train will determine if this willbecome our reality or not. When we train as ifour lives depended on it, we will fight as if itdoes… Train daily and train with intentionbecause, should your skil ls ever besummoned, you will be glad that you made theappropriate preparations and developedadequately.

Another aspect that one needs to address inone’s training environment is adversity intraining. Forced failure in training is an absolutenecessity if you are truly preparing to fight indefense of life and limb. Unless resistance andnon-compliance are naturally presented inone’s training environment, they will not berecognized or readily defended against whenconfronted on the street, and they are sure toappear as a real crisis situation plays itself out.Adversity comes in the form of naturalresistance that you would expect from aperson fighting for his life. When people get hit, they hit back; no one will stand in front of youand let you hit them without retaliating for realon the street. So you must adopt this realityinto your training in order to keep aligned withreality. When I strike my opponent, I have toexpect a counter response at any time and as Icontinue with a desired technique or counterattack I remain aware of any threat that myopponent may unexpectedly unleash in mydirection. Remember that we train not to gethit so we must always counter any suchattempt in our training environment or for realon the street. We should deal with any suchattempt on our person the same way, be it inour training environment or on the street.

The truth, like it or not, is that we should allbe training reality-based combat in a realistictraining environment. This can only develop usto effectively contain realistic situations while

“Punong Guro Sulite wouldoften remind us that there areno ‘guarantees’ in combat, only ‘fleeting opportunity’

at best”

applying effective solutions as governed by reality, which will bestprepare us to deal with the worse side of humanity, a side that isso dark that compromise cannot possibly be a part of it anddefinitely will not be an option when you are forced to go from idleto operational as the heavy hand of reality comes down hard andfast on your position, demanding that your actions (inactions)define your immediate existence. A place where you will either beforced to embrace life or forced to embrace death, a place where ifmistakes are made in combat your life may be the very thingdemanded as payment for failure, a place where a second chancecan never be an option. Simply put, the way that we train speaksvolumes for our abilities, and adversity in training will reveal one’sabilities or one’s incapacity to defend life and limb. An angry person intent on killing you would not attack you in the

manner that far too many of us are accustomed to in our trainingenvironment. So, why do we waste our time training to respond ina manner that does not meet the requirements of the actual threatfaced? The fact is that the opportunities that you would haveagainst a respectful and compliant training partner would not bethe same opportunities that would be available to you against ahot-headed maniac who will let nothing short of death itselfprevent him from lifting your head in combat. Again, to reiterate, noman will just sit idle and allow another an enormous amount oftime to work wonders without retaliating back immediately and forreal. So, why do we grant ourselves this unrealistic amount ofwasted time to counter uncontested in our training environment infull compliance with our training partner? The training would bemore true to life if all involved were not only required butdemanded to press any attack forward, as opportunity is revealedto do so and thereby forcing all involved to adapt and adjust toeach threat presented in real time, allowing them to restructuretheir counters on a case by case basis as is dictated accurately bythe dire necessity of a real situation. It is not what you do when you are prepared for an attack but

what you will do when you are caught off-guard and not preparedwhich will decide your fate, and your actions at this time willdetermine if you live or die. Therefore, you have to include the

“You can learn to fight and then train to fight, but no experience teaches you to fight better than theactual event itself, assimilating these hard lessonslearned, both good and bad, into one’s functional

understanding of what combat requires and demands of us, its participants”

Eskrima

unexpected attack and counter retaliation at random into yourtraining environment. Only by allowing yourself to developperception and reaction skills against an unexpected threat intraining will you best prepare yourself to defend against it in thestreet. I feel the urgency to reiterate that it is not what youexpect in combat that will take your life but rather that whichyou do not expect, that is what will spill your life’s blood.

In the more advanced levels of combative development, compliant training cannot be a part of what we do. At somepoint in time, all drills have to be dissolved and we mustassimilate the finer points of the technique in combative formand movement. And more importantly, we have to be in aposition where we may apply it when life and limb are calledupon in a violent street encounter. The beginning student’sprimary assignment in training should be to preserve his life, first, neutralize the enemy, second, and thirdly, the student musttry and recognize where any required technique might beeffectively applied, if at all, always yielding mere technique tocombative movement, ability and survival at all times.

We learn to be proficient, we train to be competent, and wefight to be vigilant while embracing combative truth as we bringorder out of chaos with our abilities. Truth to self, truth intraining, and truth in combat will be our formula for success indeveloping true combative effect. Combative truths can only berevealed to us through the harsh realities of combat wherereality clashes up against dire necessity in a dance of life ordeath. Some say that combative effect cannot be taught; it can only

be experienced. There is an old adage in combative circles thatstates: “There is no ‘way’ to fighting… because fighting is theway.” And only actual fighting experience can best conveylessons learned in this very critical environment. You can learnto fight and then train to fight, but no experience teaches you tofight better than the actual event itself, assimilating the hardlessons learned, both good and bad, into one’s functionalunderstanding of what combat requires and demands of us.Vantage point in combative development is always key in how

we will develop combatively. If we only view things the sameway as those before us, we will always see what they saw. Aswe shift vantage point to how we view things, what we perceivewill be different and unique, which can only benefit us aswarriors in transition. When we change the way we look atthings, the things that we look at change. To further illustrate mypoint, the earth would still be thought to be flat if a fewdiscerning explorers had listened to their critics who insistedthat they would sail off of the face of the planet if their warningwere not heeded. So, varying vantage point and opinions givesus a healthy perspective so that we may see with clarity thatwhich we may have been blind to before.

Always with the Ochikara, "The Great Strength" (called e-bunto in the Shizen vernacular tongue) or secret wisdomof the ancient Miryoku Japanese shamans, as a backdrop, the author takes us into a world of genuine reflectionsthat are capable to move at once both the reader's heart and head, thus placing him continuously in front of theabyss of the invisible, as the true final frontier of personal and collective consciousness.

The spiritual taken not as religion, but as the study of the invisible, was the way of the ancient Miryoku sages toapproach the mystery in the framework of a culture as rich as unknown, to which the author has wholeheartedlydevoted.

Alfredo Tucci, Manager Director to Budo International Publishing Co. and author in the past 30 years of a largenumber of titles about the Warrior's Way, offers us a set of extraordinary and profound reflections, which can beread individually in no particular order. Each one of them opens up a window to us through which we can take alook at the most varied subjects from an unexpected angle, now dotted with humor now with forcefulness andgrandiosity, placing us in front of eternal matters with the view of the one who has just arrived and doesn't agreewith the common places in which everyone coincides.

We can affirm with conviction that no reader will be indifferent to this book; such is the strength and intensity ofits contents. Saying this is saying a lot in a world crowded with collective mangers, interested and behavioralideologies, manipulators and, in short, spurious interests and mediocrity.
