aster or slower, time passes, it is anexperience we all have. Time gives us our realdimension and measures us as much asspace itself, or even more; it gives and takesaway without doing anything, because its

dimension is as abstract as it is puzzling. Sometimes welook back and it seems that life has ??slipped away likewater through our fingers, like sand grains on a windyday. Others, however, when observing the changesexperienced, we have the impression that eons of timehave passed and thousands of things have happened.

Spells of mind? Hocus-pocus neurons fleeing indisarray? Honestly, I don't care. What I want to point outand share is the phenomenon that even though we allexperience it in a different way, it makes us all equal: thefleetingness of life.

The way we fill the thousands of moments that areconcatenated one after another, most oftenunconsciously, is what we call life. What it was, no longerexists, nevertheless it remains in our memory andsometimes, for many, it does so as a tyrant anchoring,an antique chest of identified pains and joys with nomore power than that we grant it.

What it is, is crumbled and mixed most of the time inthe branches that hide the forest. Few are the momentsin life in which we attend and are protagonists ourconsciousness of being and living that particularmoment. They leave us just as they have arrived, in thesame way as when we strive to take command in themiddle of a vivid dream: we get lost in the smallest thing.

The future, the arcane secret that the mostexperienced in occultism and even the most ignorantbeings try to decode, is an empire where it dwells asingle certainty: finitude.

At each step, hidden, fate is pressing; at each step, hidden, free will, wise or ignorant, imposes its limitedbut determining designs. We choose, we opt for a path, when in fact what we are doing is dismissing millions ofthem and in doing so, the stone in the pond doesn'tmake waves, but tsunamis that reverberate hitting theconfines of infinity; so in the end, cause and effect getentangled creating a sense of continuity, which is butone more deceit to disturb our lucidity.

Time is the greatest deception and the most imperativeof the realities that frame us. As inevitable as elusive, asperishable as eternal; tempus fugit, time goes fast, flees, fades, because its dimensional reality is immaterial and

through it, even the most ordinary of the mortalsexperiences the confrontation with the transcendent.

That expiry is what compels us, persuade us andurges us to fulfill the intended purposes. That which iseternal in us is not what gives us the stamp of continuity, the hallmark of individuals, the peculiarities to which wecling. The eternal, the spirit that animates our first andultimate nature defines itself indefinable, because evenmore subtle than time itself, it has much finer garments;the spirit, like water, seeps into the strainer of thetemporal; what remains stuck in there, is not theessential.

Time, more than anything else, is the stage of ourwork. Places change, the characters intermingle andconfuse the passing of the acts and scenes; even thescript itself, subject to change, corrections, cross-outs,studs, side notes and improvisations, mutatis mutandis,it is reviewed and revisable. But time, ah! Nothingescapes its action on this plane.

Bullfighter of vanities, exterminator of objectives, butcher of all personal prominence, time is a mercilessexecutioner of every vestige of particularity. Measuringrod for everything and every being, Kronos devours itschildren without exception, for we all belong to it.Sublime monster, divine executioner, is in its gallowswhere everything takes its right measurement; where, pious at times, pain ends; where the certainties arediluted.

Time doesn't pass, we pass through it. We leavestrips of ourselves in each encounter, sculpted byits blows or polished in its sandstorms; thestrength of its dimension always shapes us,models us and, at the last moment, finishesus. But without it, what would it change?Nobody volunteers to the way ofconsciousness, because "carrots" havemore supporters than the "stick". It's aking with bad press, but only timeprovides us with the opportunity forchange. His designs, far from being cruel, are great, because evil also surrenders toits power.

What has a beginning has an end. What'simportant in all this? Everyone answers thisquestion his own way, but none can ignore thequestion. Herein lies its power, herein lies itscommand.

"I am interested in the future because it is the placewhere I will spend the rest of my life."

Krav Maga RED, Concept and Pedagogy

This DVD has been designed to support the teachers of the KMRED group, and italso aims at those who want to learn more about our Krav Maga self-defense

approach. It is not applying the idea of R.E.D.Development, Research and Evolution only to the

technical content of our discipline, but also to thepedagogy that we used to teach. The key word ofour research is "Simplification", both on thetechnical and pedagogical level.

"KMRED SPIRIT"

We are primarily fighters. We have our own technical identity and it

adapts to us.We don't "plagiarize" others. We accept criticism because there's no

place for the "ego" in the world of self-defense.

We assemble the work concepts to evolvetowards the interest of the contents andespecially the interests of those who will useour bases and principles to defendthemselves.

For us, KRAV MAGA RED, or rather the"KMRED Method", is not a business, it's apassion, a lifestyle.

In order to choose our technical options, wehave analyzed, husked hundreds of hours ofactual videos and versions in realisticsituations to finally submit them to the "crashtest".

We are not a new federation or any otherentity that is trying to surf the wave of "KravMaga and self-defense" thinking only of theprofits that this could generate; we are aGROUP.

Our approach is GENUINE and we share itwith whoever has a REAL OPEN MIND.

“For us, KRAV MAGA RED, or rather the "KMRED Method", is not a business, it's a passion,

a lifestyle.”

“In order to choose our technicaloptions, we have analyzed,

husked hundreds of hours of actualvideos and versions in realistic

situations to finally submit them to the ‘crash test’.”

THE MAIN IDEA, the concept of the "3 DAYS TO 5 DAYS."In our research, we have returned to the very concept of a "Close Combat". The first idea of ??the Close Combat is that of making

available to the "professionals" an operationalmethod of fighting to survive or save lives.

This requires taking into account thenotion of t ime. In fact, how long aprofessional takes to form himself.Originally, between 15 days and 3months for the luckier ones.Suddenly a question comes up...

Does it give time to learn"many" techniques? ...Especially knowing that inmoments of stress, techniqueimplementation is rathercomplicated...

Moreover, for these'techniques' to be effective...shouldn't they be practicedfor a long time in order to gaina good control on them?

So we have offered ourselves to perform an exercise that may seem simple but it turns out to be complex and veryenriching in its teachings.

The idea is saying that we have from 3 to 5 days to handle a group of people with different profiles and give them themaximum chance of survival in a street fight including notions of defenses against kicks, punches, grappling and chokesin attacks with blunt objects or even knife attacks.

And THERE... you have no other solution than going backto BASICS!!!!!!!

- Ultra-reduced number of techniques- Bases and principles

- Mental conditioning

“Our approachis GENUINE

and we share itwith whoeverhas a REALLYOPEN MIND.”

“We accept criticism becausethere's no place for the "ego" in the world of self-defense.”

- Development of the natural aggressiveness, that"animal" part that is in us.

The foundations of KMRED: STABILITY, SHIFTING,PROTECTION AND RESPONSE...

A sad REALITY...Today, self-defense disciplines like Krav Maga as are

confronted with three major problems.-The First is that new generations

are in a perpetual quest for the"newest", and when theyare asked to repeat everyday the same techniqueover and over (just likea boxer of "English

Boxing" practices his range of blows with only 6techniques available) they soon get fed up and opt for amore recreational discipline.

- The Second problem is that, with the entry of self-defense and close combat disciplines in sportsfederations, such as Krav Maga in France, which ismanaged by the French Federation of Karate, the contentsof these fighting methods (which had been created andreserved for professional environments) acquire a "sport"and "aesthetic" dimension, increasingly at odds with theprinciples of simplification and efficiency.

-The Third difficulty, which is directly related to the othertwo, is the fact that the need that federations, clubs andother structures have to accommodate the greatestnumber of licenses (licenses = money...), leads them tosort out and develop intense training programs,

corresponding to progression schedules copied fromMartial Arts (belts, etc.).

The sole purpose of these programs is that of removingthe 'boring' aspect of repeating constantly only a fewtechniques, in order to keep their number of licenses...

In fact, students pass from one belt to the next whilediscovering countless techniques, which give them thefeeling of dominating the universe of "self-defense" and

make them believe that they are able to face any "street"aggression. The main problem with this approach to an

anti-aggression system like Krav Maga, is that itdistances it from its primary purpose:EFFECTIVENESS.

Let us not forget that self-defense practitionersare seeking solutions to address a variety of

situations, but unlike the freaks of Martial Arts and combatsports, they will not spend 20 years in a training hall todevelop their skills.

Besides, the "aggression" can occur "tomorrow" and ourprogram is based on this need.

QUESTIONING TRAINING IS QUESTIONING TRAINERS

There is another matter of substance...Quite often, somedisciplines have their

origin in one or twopeople who at anappropriate time

“…new generations are in a perpetual questfor the "newest", and when they are asked torepeat every day the same technique over and

over (just like a boxer of "English Boxing"practices his range of blows with only 6

techniques available) they soon get fed up andopt for a more recreational discipline.”

have had an innovative approach and these are the lastreferences to their "successors". We understand thisattitude because 'Martial Arts' have accompanied usthroughout our lives.

That a Martial Art retains its original dimension is morethan legitimate, but that a method meant for "survive"remains frozen on outdated principles in the name of thefounder and his descendants is absurd.

When we speak of 'self-defense', how can you freeze itscontent, taking into account the current problems orconsidering the dazzling evolution of fighting methods withthe advent of MMA?

Today, particularly in Krav Maga, reference is made tosome "experts" who, in the name of their notoriety andeven at the risk of losing their credibility, prefer to stay inthe 'world' they control, instead of accepting to fizzle outfor the sake of the content.

Perhaps tomorrow we ourselves will be considered"creators", but one thing is certain: the biggest lack of

respect that our "heirs" could commit is to continueteaching the exact copy of what we have created, withoutconsidering that the context, situation, life and needs areconstantly changing...

This is so... because it's not our name what people mustremind, but the R.E.D. concept... Research, Evolution andDevelopment

A small remark by way of conclusion...Our work has led us to meeting many people and on

several occasions we have been asked:"Why do you still call this Krav Maga? And we have

answered: It's true, our content differs significantly from theprogram of the founder of Krav Maga, but we share the samementality with which he conceived it, and we don't deny our'technical origins', despite more and more Krav Maga stylesare seen every day in the "planet". There are days in which weprefer to call ourselves just KMRED to mark our difference.

Our motto: “Between being and appearing, we havechosen, Student one day, Student forever.”

“Between being and appearing, we have chosen, Student one day,

Student forever.”

DEVELOPMENTS UP TO THEREPUBLICAN ERA

To understand to the origins of ModernFanziquan, it is imperative to visit the history ofthe Ma Family Tongbei Martial Arts, becausethat is the main source upon which modernFanziquan was created. Originated in the Hebeiprovince, the Tongbei Martial Arts are not asingle martial arts style, but an effort toamalgamate the best elements and principlesfrom several styles founded by Pan Wenxue. These principles and knowledge were thenpassed down to Li Yunbiao, a reputed masterwho earned himself the nickname “Iron ArmSwallow”, who in his turn passed it down toHuang Linbiao, whose successors included the

CONTEMPORARY FANZIQUAN

Fanziquan (Lit. Turning/RotatingFists Boxing) is a traditionalmartial art style that originatedin the northeast region of Chinafeaturing a vast array of quickand forceful punching techniques.Due to its long history, Fanziquanhas been known by many namessuch as Bashanfan (EightFlashing Turns), Bafanmen (EightTurns School), Fanquan (TurningBoxing), and more. The style, aswell as several of its mainmovements, was recorded by theanti-Japanese General Qi Jiguangof the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)in one of his essays called “NewBook of Effective Disciplines”,which indicates that Fanziquanwas well established more than400 years ago. As the stylespread across differentgeographies during the QingDynasty (1644-1911), it grewout into many different branchesand sub-styles. Therefore, untiltoday, we can see traces ofcombined traditional styles withFanziquan all over China.

well renown masters Ma Fengtu and MaYingtu.

Back to Fanziquan, it is said that thestyle originated from Han Luma of Hebei, who then passed it to the Duan Family. In turn, the Duan Family then passed itXu Zhaoxiong from the Northeast regionthat later passed it down to Hao Mingjiuand Cheng Dongge. And it was duringthe early Republican era (1991-1949),when Ma Fengtu and Ma Yingtu wereable to exchange techniques with HaoMingjiu and Cheng Dongge over a longperiod of time, and as a result, the styleof Fanziquan became an integral part ofthe Tongbei Martial Arts.During thosefriendly exchanges, popular traditionalroutines of Fanziquan were practicedand enhanced by the Ma masters, starting from eight basic movements thatcould be practiced independently or in alinear fashion to routines that were twiceas long.

CONTEMPORARY WUSHU ERA

After the founding of the People'sRepublic of China (1949-), there was aneffort to rescue and include traditionalstyles as part of the Modern Wushuevents for demonstrations andcompetitions. Each province had its ownspecialties; i.e. Praying Mantis camefrom Shandong, Monkey Staff camefrom Sichuan, and so forth.Subsequently, the Chinese WushuAssociation would have athletes andcoaches travel around the country toperform an effective exchange oftechniques and routines. ModernFanziquan was developed in Shaanxi, mainly based on the work of the lateWushu Grandmaster Ma Xianda, who isan inheritor of the Ma Family Tongbei

Wushu

Martial Arts learning directly from his father Ma Fengtu and uncle Ma Yingtusince very young age.

Under GM Ma, the movements included in the “new” Fanziquan routinecouldn't have been more traditional. In fact, since the early 60s, he combinedthe main movements of two traditional routines into a single routine arranged tosatisfy some of the new regulations of the Modern Wushu competition formatsuch as time limit, competition floor usage, etc. Then, he and several of hisstudents traveled across the country to disseminate this important part of hisremarkable legacy, teaching the routine to all main provincial teams andcoaches. Grouped under the category called “Other Boxing Styles Group 2”,Fanziquan became an official competition item of the National WushuChampionships in China, alongside the styles Piguaquan and Tongbeiquan.

It is worth saying that among the main representatives of Fanziquan throughthis early era of Modern Wushu competition, especially prior to the end of theCultural Revolution (1966-1976), were the renown masters Bai Wenxiang, currently the vice president of the Shaanxi Wushu Association, and Gao Xi'an,both who are actual disciples of the Ma Family Tongbei Martial Arts.Furthermore, the late 70s also saw the rise of the young Jet Li, arguably themost famous Wushu athlete turned into an international movie star, and it iscommon knowledge that Fanziquan was one of his specialties, which he hasexhibited on many stages around the world and in some of his movies in bitsand pieces.

TACTICS AND TECHNICAL CONTENTThe essence of Fanziquan is captured in the old name of Bashanfan which

refers to sudden and continuous tumbles or overturns of the fists up, down, leftand right; that are executed as fast as lightning flashes; and can be applied ineight specific variations, including forward, back, up, down, left, right, centerand double techniques. In contrast to other northern styles, famous for longrange techniques, kicks and leaps, Fanziquan stresses short range punchingtechniques employing arms, elbows, shoulders and hips with fewer legtechniques. This characteristic marks the style as a Short Boxing type andmakes it most useful in close quarters hand-to-hand combat.

Jabs, straight blasts, uppercuts, hooks, reverse punches and other armtechniques are used in combination with nimble footwork to enter youropponent's optimal striking range and overwhelm with constant pressure. Thethree main stances of Fanziquan are the horse stance, the semi horse stance, also known as 40-60 stance, and the unicorn stance, providing solid balancewithout sacrificing in mobility since the feet are never anchored to the groundcompletely.°°The few kicks in the system are usually trained high duringpractice but aimed lower than the knee for application, mainly used to setupsweeps combined with grabs and locks with the arms and hips. There is onlyone high kick, the “nail kick”, a straight line kick that travels with a piston-likeaction from the center of the body usually aimed at the opponent's throat.

The traditional combat theory of Fanziquan is aggressive and relentless. Thereare no lulls in the battle. Getting inside with phenomenal speed and crushing

your opponent. Lastly, the Ma Family members practice

Wushu

Fanziquan with their distinctive method of force execution, oftendenominated Tongbei Energy, which was developed organically by blendingseveral of the most important elements from their various styles, such asthe long range and suppleness of the Tantui and Piguaquan, the speed andsweeps of Chuojiao, the short range and power-issuing methods ofBajiquan, together with Fanziquan's own lightning fist tumbles andpunching methods.

FANZIQUAN TODAYContemporary Fanziquan has continued to be practiced extensively in

China and around the world, becoming very popular on Wushucompetitions and demonstrations. For the last 30 years, the same tightlypaced routine that famous Shaanxi athlete Chu Fenglian used to performduring the late 80s has not been subject to considerable change in shapeor emphasis. Although, when compared to the traditional style, there aremany exaggerated overt movements and a few additions to highlightcertain characteristics of the style or even physical abilities of theperformers. In regards to traditional Fanziquan, there are various traditionalbranches of the style still being practiced in China and abroad, includingthe Ma Family Tongbei Fanziquan lead by Master Ma Yue, who is the son ofGM Ma Xianda and the sixth generation guardian of the Ma Family TongbeiMartial Arts. Each lineage of the style may have their own regional traitsand unique qualities, but they all share the same key principles withpunches as dense as raindrops and fast as a burning string of firecrackers!

VACIRCA BROTHERS JIU-JITSU

The Vacirca Story Part 2

© 2016 Franco Vacirca, SandraGehriger-Nagel

In late autumn 1989, it wasthe first time that I came intouch with the Gracie's andtheir Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. SifuPaul Vunak, founder ofProgressive Fighting Systems(PFS), invited me to participatein one of his training withRickson Gracie at that time.Although the founder of Jeet-Kune-Do, the late master BruceLee, had worked intensively onground fighting and studied dif-ferent form of Martial Artsrelated to Grappling, thesetechniques were at that timenot my preferred ones, butthat would be changed on thisvery special day. The simple,family-like and respectfulatmosphere at training MasterRickson training place motiva-ted me within short time totrain with the Gracie familymembers and their cousins theMachado's and to definitely giveto the Brazilian method of Jiu-Jitsu a chance.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

n July, 16th 1995, my brotherDemetrio and I opened thedoors of the new VacircaAcademy of Martial Arts (VAMA)in Zurich, and Gracie Jiu-Jitsubecame a very important part of

our teaching program. The JKD-Grapplingmethod that we trained back then, beforeintroducing Jiu-Jitsu into our teaching pro-gram, was little by little replaced by theGracie method. This guided our Martial ArtsAcademy to a new training program; in thelong distance we focused primarily on Thaiboxing of Ajarn Chai Sirisute, in the middle"trapping" range the PFS-JKD program wasapplied, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on theground. In weapons training the Filipino Kali-Eskrima as taught by Guru Dan Inosantoremained the same way as it was alreadybefore. Our location had 150m2 judo matarea, with a very varied range of courses formen and women, and I did not had to waitlong, that a men living with his family in ourneighborhood brought his little son andasked me if I his son Gazmend Amiti couldalso take part of the training. The smallGazmend was not only the firstyoung boy I registered in ourAcademy, but he was also theyoungest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu stu-dent we had. Our Academy grew ina very short time to become thefirst European base for BrazilianJiu-Jitsu. Due to the numerous TVappearances, radio interviews andarticles in newspapers and interna-tional magazines, the interest of ourAcademy increased so much, thatwe soon started also to lead ourown Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seminarsabroad. Our reputation gained even

more, when our 4-man small buthighly motivated Swiss BJJ team(Nikos Bachzetsis, MartinHardmeier, my brother Demetrioand I), came back with a silver, abronze medal and two fourth pla-ces, all in the Black belt divisionreturned from the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championship in Riode Janeiro in January 1996. TheInternational BJJ Federation(IBJJF) had us recognized as official Black belt holders and appointed me as the president for this sportin Switzerland; additionally, I was invited to represent Switzerland as a founding member of theInternational Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation. In Rio de Janeiro, via Madrid, our team housed in a hotel in Copacabana called "Ouro Verde" (Bras.

green Gold). The owner of the hotel was a Swiss gentleman who had spent a long time in Ecuador andlater settled in Rio de Janeiro. With his help we were looking for a adequate place for training before ofthe contest, so I started my research and we found a Dojo, which was not so far from our hotel. We just

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

wanted to have a training place for us, so a few mats would beenough good for us, but we founded even more. As we walked inthe morning, I saw several young people who went into a buildingwith kimonos in their arms. Most of them kept also their Budo beltin their hands, and based on the colors, such as yellow, orange andgreen, I thought first that it should be some karate or judokas prac-titioners, but that was not so. So we stepped also in the building, and walked up to the third floor, where we found a simple fitnesscenter, with a sizable Tatame area. Immediately a nice lady approa-ched us and my brother Demetrio, who spoke Portuguese betterbecause of his work at IBERIA at that time, he immediately took therole of the translator for all of us.The receptionist told us that we were welcome to have a look

around. We explained to her which where our intensions and that wewere very happy if we could use the matted area for a few hours perday during our stay in Rio. She also offered us to meet again laterand to talk to master Augusto Cordeiro, also a well-known Jiu-Jitsuexpert himself. Until then I never had met outside of the Graciefamily nobody. I thought that the Gracie's were the only and first toteach this style and owned the "Brazilian” Jiu-Jitsu monopole intheir country. I immediately agreed to come later and to meet mas-ter Cordeiro later.Like the "four musketeers" but with our white kimonos we step-

ped in the arena of one of the most respectful masters of Jiu-Jitsuin Rio de Janeiro, at the Academia Augusto Cordeiro. The receptio-nist showed us where the dressing rooms were and told us, that themaster and his assistant Professor Georghino (George Junior) wouldalso like to welcome us. Mestre Cordeiro embraced us, as if we wereold friends and had not seen us for a long time. Professor Georghinowas a bit more reserved, probably because he did not know exactlywhat we were looking at his Dojo. We explained why we were in Rio

de Janeiro and what we were looking for in his Dojo. ProfessorGeorghino meant that this was not a problem and if we would like, wecould also train in his classes and join training with his disciples. The training began after the students standing in a circle and gree-

ted with a simple handshake. Training with the Gracie's in LosAngeles, I had never seen it like that and I liked so much that I said tomy brother that I would love to that in our school back in Zurich. Thewarm-up was very special, which with the Gracie's in Los Angeles Idid not experienced. Most of the times little warm-up exercises wasused anyways, because most of the times, the self-defense techni-ques where used immediately for warming up. But these guys hereused a very dynamic and conditioning way and it remembered memore like the warm-up drills used by higher-level Judo-players inJapan. Perhaps the reason was because in Los Angeles the trainingareas were much smaller and not permitted to use such drilling warm-up. In a short moment I made me thousands of questions, which latermotivated me to start my own researches. Professor Georghino wasthe Top student Master Cordeiro, but also trained with Master CarlsonGracie, who had his own Jiu-Jitsu school close by. While we weretraining, Professor Georghino looked over at us until he decided tocome to us and asked if he could tell us and show a few things. Ofcourse we accepted and he started to teach us a few moves and tellus how the competition style was looking like, since we had only lit-tle information about it. So in the coming days we trained withProfessor Georghino to get ready for the World Cup. I have to men-tion it that we had luck to get to this place and to Professor Georghinoand his hard training, because I believe, without this support it wasmuch difficult to achieve the great result of our team.Short after that successful event, in the same year, I went again to

Rio de Janeiro to visit Professor Georghino, but when I arrived, I dis-covered that he was outside of Rio de Janeiro because of urgentfamily reasons, and so I postponed the visit for later. During this trai-ning trip, I also visited Master Sylvio Behring, who also encounteredour Swiss team during the World Cup and then we invited him to givea Behring Jiu-Jitsu seminar in Zurich.During this trip, I also took the opportunity to train at the Gracie

school in Humaita and I meet with Grandmaster Helio Gracie, whogently took some time to talk to me. During the private conversationwith him, I asked him the question, where I should make my next Jiu-Jitsu training, and without hesitating he said: "... here in Rio deJaneiro with my sons, in Los Angeles with other son Rorion, or in SaoPaulo with Professor Pedro (Hemetério)”. Since until then I trained inRio de Janeiro and Los Angeles, I wanted to get to know Sao Pauloand to train with Mestre Hemetério. This wish was then even strongerwhen we spent time with Master Waldomiro Perez Junior, the founderof Cia. Paulista, and also top student of Marcelo Behring from SaoPaulo, who visited us in Zurich. Professor Junior was at that time thefirst who give us a learning path; the result was a very long and closecooperation and friendship.

Weng Chun Kung Fu inZhaoqing, China

A research journey to thelast Chinese grandmasterof the old generation, Taam Pui Chyun (1917-2014)

In 2012, after a decade ofinvestigation to search outthe last living Grandmaster of Weng Chun (note:Grandmaster Taam called hisart “Baan Chung Wing Chun”or “Red Boat Wing Chun”; forthe sake of simplicity I hence-forth use the term WengChun) in China, I finally founda crucial hint with the assis-tance of a Chinese woman, onthe Chinese website of hisstudent, Sifu Leung Wai Choi, and instantly travelled toZhaoqing in China.

he district-free city of Zhaoqing in the southChinese province of Guangdong is adjacent toFoshan, which once formed an important cen-ter of Weng Chun and of all South Shaolin arts.I myself have been instructed there byGrandmaster Pak Cheung, and back then I also

visited the village of the Tang- family. Zhaoqing furthermo-re has a great historical significance for our Shaolin philo-sophy of Chan or Zen, because the famous Sixth PatriarchHui Neng once sojourned there and planted a plum tree inthe Mei_an temple. Upon arrival in Zhaoqing, my first goaltherefore was the beautyful Buddhist nunnery Mei_an, andthere, below the gorgeous plum tree of Hui Neng, I thank-fully commemorated Bodhidharma and all our ancestors, who passed on to us the marvellous arts of Shaolin.

At first, I received a warm welcome from the student ofGrandmaster Taam Pui Chyun, Grandmaster Leung WaiChoi at his home, and once again I was surprised by thisparticular cordiality with which we as foreigners are fre-quently received by the Kung Fu- families in China. Heshowed me around his house, introduced me to his family, and demonstrated parts of his Weng Chun program him-self or had it demonstrated by his students. For the eve-ning I was invited to the birthday party of one of his stu-dents, where we obviously not only indulged ourselves incelebrating, but also in talking shop - Kung Fu can be soeasy by just exchanging ourselves, by showing respect toeach other and by celebrating our art. In the following daysGrandmaster Leung Wai Choi showed me the subtletiesof his program, emphasizing the Sixteen Words which for

T

this particular school of Weng Chun representthe most important instruction by our ancestorFung Siu Ching. We also visited together theschools of his daughter and of one of his stu-dents, and I really appreciated to encounter suchan intact and exemplary Kung Fu- family inZhaoqing. Everybody was very happy to see me,and demonstrated their skills. GrandmasterLeung Wai Choi pays high attention to detail inhis lessons, and I found it very interesting thathis Weng Chun- curriculum also includes manylocking and pushing techniques.

On the next day, the time had come to meet theoldest member of the Weng Chun- family alive,Grandmaster Taam Pui Chyun, who dedicated 83of his 96 years to Weng Chun. In the morning Iwas picked up from the hotel by GrandmasterLeung Wai Choi, his son and my interpreter, andwe went to another urban quarter of Zhaoqing. Finally, the 96-year-old Taam Pui Chyun was stan-ding right I front of me, inviting me into his home.Past the wooden dummy which was installed inhis corridor, he led me into his living room to have

some tea first. I was deeply touched by his can-didness, cordiality, and by his joy about my visitas well as his passion about Weng Chun. Rightaway I went to get my books and photos, andshowed Grandmaster Taam Pui Chyun picturesand movies about his Weng Chun brothers,Grandmaster Pak Cheung and Grandmaster TangYick. He was very impressed and had many of hisown stories to tell about his brothers, about hisSifu Tang Suen and his Sigong Fung Siu Ching. Ihad so many questions about the ancestors, which I finally could ask someone who himselfhad learned from Grandmaster Tang Shuin, andwho still knew Fung Siu Ching from eye-witnessreports. I barely dared to ask him if he would allowme to film himself, but he actually was very happyabout that and insisted in also filming every singleform and exercise which he demonstrated.

Afterwards, I invited everyone to a nearbyrestaurant, and Grandmaster Taam Pui Chyunwent on with his stories about Weng Chun, enri-ched by many practical demonstrations. Whilestill in the restaurant, we went through the Wing

Chun Kuen and the Siong Kung, and I received manyvaluable hints regarding execution and application ofthese forms. For example, it was new to me that the SiongKung belongs to a whole set of forms. It was also veryinteresting to get to know the Weng Chun Qigong exerci-ses of this lineage. Grandmaster Tang Suen once handedhis wooden dummy and his long pole down to his studentTaam Pui Chyun, and today they are in the possession ofGrandmaster Leung Wai Choi. It was a very special feelingand a great honor to be allowed to train with these histo-

ric tools. They also showed me a hand-written book whereall the forms and exercises of Grandmaster Fing Siu Chingand Grandmaster Tang Suen had been written down -what a treasure! The time simply flew by, as one can ima-gine. It was also my turn to demonstrate the Weng Chunwhich I had learned in Hong Kong from Grandmaster WaiYan, and in Foshan from Grandmaster Pak Cheung. I toldthe old master how Weng Chun meanwhile is being ins-tructed all over the world, and that the western studentsare very excited about the art, eager to gain an in-depth

Weng Chun

understanding of it. They were very tou-ched by that.

I am deeply grateful to GrandmasterTaam Pui Chyun and Grandmaster LeungWai Choi that they received me so cor-dially, showed me their Weng Chun, evenallowed me to film them while doing so,and readily answered all my questions.Unfortunately, Grandmaster Taam PuiChyun passed away in 2014, and with himpassed the old generation of Weng Chun.Taam Pui Chyun was the last of that gene-ration in mainland China, just asGrandmaster Wai Yan was the last of hisgeneration in Hong Kong. I had theextraordinary chance to learn and researchboth the Hong Kong- Weng Chun as wellas the Weng Chun from mainland China, and I will carry on the project of my teacherfrom Dai Duk Lun to preserve Weng Chunin all of its richness and to pass it on world-wide. Having learnt the different WengChun- traditions from their respective lastgrandmasters, as well as by daily trainingand teaching, I recognize the “Red Thread”which all Weng Chun traditions thoughouttime hold in common. It is this Red Threadthat I pass on to the masters and studentsof our International Weng ChunAssociation located in Bamberg, Germany.

raining should progress in a logicaland consistent way, without everlosing sight of the ultimate goal. Let'ssee the progression of a jab, forinstance: first you have to learn thetechnique, train in the air or in front of

a mirror to correct it, and then move to practice inthe sand bag; the bag develops power andteaches the body how to align after a blow.

From the sand bag pass to workout with focusmitts, now it is a moving target to spot and towhich you must continually adapt.

After these individual exercises you can startpracticing with a partner. Begin with a sharingexercise with l itt le or no contact, graduallyincreasing the contact, while maintaining clearlydefined parameters.

Then Begin to do some sparring for checkingyour tools against specific instruments; Begin withjab against jab; then jab against jab and direct; jaband jab against jab-direct-hook; jab against allpunches; jab against all kicks; jab against punchesand kicks, etc., the list is endless.

The key l ies in moving gradually towardpracticing open combat; in so doing, traumas arereduced to a bare minimum, and acquiring badhabits is prevented.

Another key point is to always know what areyou trying to develop by practicing a particularexercise; is it timing, resistance or sensitivity topain?

TRAINING IN JKD

If all you can get out of this is just a new perspective on training, you will have achieved a critical element of my teaching.

Make no mistake, if you don't train you will get no results, and ifyou don't like doing exercise most probably you won't even try. Few ofus need to use these skills regularly. Therefore, it makes good senseto say that it's hard to find the right motivation to train, but youmust do it, no matter how, but you absolutely have to do it, theresponsibility for your growth and for your abilities is only yours.

If you don't improve or if you feel powerless in a real confrontation, the responsibility is only yours; I recommend you to assume yourresponsibilities.

If you see that there are gaps in your training, try to fill them, noone will do that for you. The most important concept of training isprogression.

If you don't have it clear, you will not fully benefit from theexercise; note that no matter how realistic a training sessionmay be, it will never be a real fight, never!

So do not try to do your training in a real fight, you shoulddefinitely look at it in terms of distance:

Kicking distancePunching distanceGripping distanceFight distance

However, few methods emphasize more than one or twodistances; some of them may consider up to three, as in thecase of Muay Thai, but they are exceptions rather than therule. In JKD we train all four different combat distances, thisis very important because it's precisely in this process thatwe discover the salutary lesson of combat distances.

Regardless of the ability that we have at a given distance,if the opponent brings up a distance in which we don't feelat ease, our skills will not help in anything; we may be ableto hit a fly in its leg a fly with our M16 from a distance ofone kilometer, but if the enemy is attacking us from milesaway with heavy artillery, I think the consequences areobvious; therefore, having the right tool for a specific target, and at the right time, this is the prerequisite for success in agreat battle.

FATIGUEFatigue is another factor analyzed by the psychology of

confrontation. When you feel very tired, even the simplestaction seems complex to implement. During combat, fatigue occurs very quickly, a factor which is difficult tohandle when it occurs in a spirit already tested by thesymptoms of the fighting stress. Everyone knows thatreaching the highest levels of fatigue that a body cantolerate (sleep deprivation), you get harmful effects are notonly physically, but also hallucinations and other mentaldisorders. Training to resist and remain functional inmoments of deep and prolonged fatigue is one of the goalsthat both military and martial arts schools strive to achieve. The training program of some Special Units provides somesleep deprivation through frequent alarms during the night, reducing the rest time students three hours a night. MartialArts schools in general hold intensive seminars of severaldays' duration, during which the level of physical fatiguethat participants have to cope with increases significantly. Astrong increase of fatigue can break down our defensivepsychic barriers and trigger unexpected emotionalreactions. The purpose of this type of practices is that ofmaking practitioners learn to keep their body and mind infunctional harmony, and face rigorously the whole trainingprocess till the end. Only when the seminar is over get thestudents to understand the real importance of learning tonot sink and annihilate themselves in front of their own

Sifu Alessandro Colonnese

limitations, but to set a goal and pursue it by making fulluse of their mental and physical resources. Only in thisway students will be able to confront all the difficulties ofa bloody confrontation. My purpose was to give you theright idea of fatigue in a context of real combat, wherethe psychological aspect of the confrontation plays animportant role. Training without taking account of thedevelopment of mental abilities through motivation, willand programming objectives, is a serious error. TheWarrior Arts have above all the need for an educationalfunction of the body and mind through a training systembased on the psychology of confrontation thatcontributes to decipher and identify the mental blockswe carry within us since the beginning, because no onehas ever explained to us the true nature of human

Jeet Kune Do

beings. The best advice I can give is that youtry to find a good technical teacher who canfollow your development step by step andgive you the right information on theprinciples governing any martial discipline.

THE GRIPPING DISTANCE This is the combat situation that ends up in

the ground; it’s also known as short distanceor distance of clinch. It is generally used byall the specialists in grip fighting systems(Grapplers), who manage to bridge the gapand come into close contact with theopponent searching to take him down to theground in order to finalize him.

1. - CHI SAO tactile sensitivity exercise. 2. - Active wing blocking exercise. 3 - Arm and fist control with the back of the hand. 4 - Lock andsimultaneous vertical fist attack. 5 - Defense and simultaneous vertical fist attack.

Sensitization exercise

It's the most combative distance, so our goal is to get to itso that we can apply easily the most effective grippingtechniques extrapolated from Wing Chun and Chinna.

There are three ways to harming the enemy at this distance, and all three are extremely effective, each technique has thepotential of ending a match immediately by KO.

The strategy is that of hitting directly the opponent with anatural weapon, since our body has many war instruments, allusable (available), and at this distance we can pour anincredible amount of pressure on our opponent.

The needed tactic is that of encasing the foe to try todislocate a joint or hit him with the elbows, head or knees.

Most people can no longer combat with a dislocated joint, especially the elbow.

One of the most important strategies in real combat is usingthe environment to our advantage by neutralizing theadversary through repeated actions using the ground, andother strategies that can be very useful. I don't know anybodywho is able to absorb a blow with the head against a concretefloor, or anything like that; everything counts to take the upper

hand in the confrontation against an aggressor; if you knowhow to be effective in any environment you will be in a betterposition to dictate the terms of combat.

At this distance we resort to techniques used four knownsystems or combat methods: Thai Boxing, Grappling, WingChun and Kali.

Gripping distance:

1. Pak sao / lop sao2. Pak sao / pak sao3. Straight blast4. Head butts, knee strikes, elbow strikes

“JKD stemmed essentially from the Taoist philosophy, although it was very influenced by the Western scientific positivism.”

more than forty years have passed after the death of itscreator, JKD remains the combat system that hasinterested and still interests the crowd. Few know thatBruce Lee, after creating a complete fighting art, almostperfect technically, innovative and in step with the times, endowed his style non-style philosophical principles andconcepts related to the tradition of the ancient art of KungFu, that he drew from many philosophical currents, such asConfucianism, Chan Buddhism and Taoism. It is preciselythe latter that inspired him the philosophical framework ofJeet Kune Do, which is based on individualism, the pursuitof self-liberation, anti-authoritarianism and other valuesthat, with complete honesty, he tried to introduce in theMartial Arts through his project, that he called Jeet KuneDo. This is why he was very critical of the traditionalists, denouncing their hierarchy of schools, their rigidity andtheir uniformity.

So, JKD stemmed essentially from the Taoist philosophy, although it was very influenced by the Western scientificpositivism (which resulted in the scientific conception oftraining) and the North American practicality based on theresearch of the effectiveness and the economy of

movements. A maxim that characterizes andidentifies the Taoist philosophy of JKD is:"Using No Way as Way, Having No Limitationas Limitation". It's a typical Taoist sentencethat plays with contradictions, opposites, Yinand Yang and paradoxes, enclosing all in aworld of wisdom, and recalling that pureTaoists were essentially individualistic andliberal; that shines through from the first partof the maximum of Bruce Lee, because whenhe speaks of "no way", he refers to the fact ofnot having ties with any institution or anyfixed, encoded and preordained system, andtherefore with no style or combat system, since the l iberation and full personaldevelopment is determined only by theindividual, as each individual is different andunique. While in the second part of themaximum, Bruce postulates that there's no

need to let ourselves be l imited by the traditions, prejudices, rituals, dogmas and all that can lead to thecrystallization of a system.

Many don't know Bruce Lee the philosopher, but it isprecisely this aspect that made JKD a truly special system. My encounter with Patrick Strong (first generation studentof Bruce Lee), known as "The Lord of the Speed", inaddition to improving my technical skills, was also veryuseful to me in the  sense  that it made me know in depththe philosophical aspect of Jeet Kune Do, then unknown tome, showing me how deep was the job that Bruce Lee hadmade at inner level; not by chance he had learned Tai Chi(Art Grand Supreme Fist) from his father, who started him inthe study of classical alchemical texts, reaching a deepunderstanding of how the human body functions in termsof energy (union of body and mind ), so much so that oneof his most striking philosophical maxims is the constantreference to the Water element. "Be water, my friend" - "Ilike water", he used to say, to highlight the Water elementthat in the reality of things represents the basis and natureof traditional Kung Fu of which Bruce Lee drew much of hisphilosophic martial knowledge. Concepts and principlessuch as sinking, fluctuating, emerging and re-emerging asthe flow of a river to the sea, fighting without fighting, working intentionally with no-intention, the mind no-mind,the Wu Wuei principle of void, the emptying the cup, etc.As you can see, his propensity for eastern philosophy wasan important work piece in the construction of his eclecticcombat system, and few people have had this information.I had the privilege and pleasure of knowing, studying anddeepening this knowledge with Patrick Strong, who hadreceived it directly from Bruce Lee. Probably this aspect isthe most unknown in the world of JKD, but in my opinion isthe most important.

JKD, my friends, is nothing else than a grouping ofelements and principles extrapolated mainly from Kung Fu,and especially of the Wing Chun Yip Man style. Someelements were also taken from different disciplines such asTaiji, Tang Lang, Western Fencing, etc. There is a maximumof the Tao Te Ching - the gospel of Taoism - that Bruce Leeused to recite: "A living man is flexible, soft; a dead man is

Sifu Alessandro Colonnese

Sifu Alessandro Colonneseemail: [email protected] Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/JFJKDA

inflexible, rigid. In the same way, all creatures, grass and trees, aliveare all malleable and flexible, and dead turn dry and crumbling. Theinflexible rigor is the companion of death while the supplesweetness is the companion of life. Inflexible soldiers do not getthe victory; stiffer trees are more ready for the ax. The strong andpowerful people fall from their seats while the humble andsubmissive ones rise above them all." The way to move and manageone's body in Kung Fu is closely linked to the movement of the mind."Mind moves, body thinks" is the profound meaning of the internalprocess used in Jeet Kune Do. The reference to Yin and Yang, theTaoist universal principles that Bruce Lee extrapolated from Taiji andstudied thoroughly with his father, accompanied him throughout hislife, giving him the right energy to tackle the course of his brief buttortuous and troubled life. The yang principle (represented by white) isthe positive, the day, the sky, the sun, the light, heat and so on, while yinis negativity, the night, the dark, cold and so on. Bruce Lee had perfectlyunderstood how the body was adjusted and kept in balance by theseuniversal laws and he could use them wisely.

And here resurfaces once again the water element that was crucial forthe development of Bruce Lee's JKD; water, my friends, is the naturalphenomenon that comes closest to Wu Wei: Nothing is weaker thanwater, but when it attacks something hard that puts upresistance, then nothing can resist to it, and nothing willchange its course. These verses explain to us the nature ofwater, that being so light, it cannot be grasped; if cut itdoesn't get injured; if hit it doesn't get hurt; if separated,it will not split; it doesn't have a specific form butadjusts to the container; it manifests powerful andimpetuous like Niagara Falls and then remain calmin a pond. In my opinion, water is undoubtedly thedominant element of the universe. "In theinterception defend yourself, control and attackin unison, turning your body into anunstoppable tsunami."

Budo International: WHAT ISKEYSI, FOR YOU?

My name is Juanjo and I am a Keysiinstructor in Madrid. Probably youexpected that I speak about anendless stream of techniques meantfor self-defense, but that wouldn'teven scratch the surface of what Keysiis really for me.

I began practicing Martial Arts at agefive, today I am 31 and I still keeplearning new things every day. If youwant me to define what is Keysi, Icould only define it as "Family". Iguess now you're a little puzzled andwondering about it...

B.I.: HOW CAN A SELF DEFENSEMETHOD BE DEFINED AS"FAMILY"?

When I started training Martial Artsat the age of five, the master wasvirtually unattainable, you couldn't talkto him because he was superior to youin rank and category; in fact, even myteacher was obliged to seekpermission to speak to the "master".

I love philosophy in Martial Arts, butin my humble opinion, most of themare made out of rules and hierarchies, they are methods designed for aTatami and a championship.

B.I.: IN WHAT DOES KEYSIRESEMBLE A MARTIAL ART?

In absolutely nothing, because wehave no rules to start with, since ourscenario is real life, where rivals can bemore than one and where there willNOT be a referee to tel l us thatsomething is legal or illegal.

We don't train linearly against onesingle opponent, we do it againstseveral at once, and we don't have afilter of age, weight or height. There areno illegal blows or banned techniquesfor us.

B.I.: WHY?Because if an offender pulls his gun

on us, we cannot reason with him andsimply tel l him: Don't shoot me,please! In the end, it wil l be theoffender's decision whether to shootor not.

But the decision to fight for your lifeis only yours. If I still haven't convincedyou, just think: "If you meet a tiger, tellthe tiger not to eat you just becauseyou're a vegetarian".

Having no rules doesn't mean doingwhat we want, they instill us as manyvalues ??as norms we ignored.

One day I asked Justo Diéguez: Forwhat are you fighting? And he said: Tonot fight! Perhaps it's a contradictoryanswer, but it's ful l of meaningbecause it makes all the sense in theworld and, as I've just disclosed, I

asked him directly. You don't need a pass, a specialpermission or complicated bureaucratic procedures; youcan approach him and ask him whatever you want.

Throughout my life I have learned Boxing, Kick Boxing,Kung Fu, Jeet Kune Do, Full Contact... I've always wantedto learn more, develop myself and expand my mind, but Ialways found barriers. Barriers are limitations; a limitationmay be a rule or a determined number of techniques.

B.I.: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU LEARN ALL THETECHNIQUES OF A SYSTEM?

Usually after we've learnt everything, all that remains forus to do is practicing again and again so that it becomessomething natural for us, but I've always wanted to learnmore, and in Keysi I don't need to change methods.

B.I.: WHY?Just because it never ends, it is unfinished and that just

means I'll never stop learning, I will always be a discipleand they always invite me to innovate, to ask questions, pose my doubts or create my own challenges.

B.I.: WHERE IS THE FAMILY WITHIN ALL THIS?My response will be overwhelming: we do not compete.

But we have Keysi seminars in which train instructors fromall over the world; we don't use colored belts but we alsohave graduations.

In a seminar, my partner may be a "Master Instructor" ora "Dima I", but we both will perform the same work, thesame number of hours; and he will show me what I do

not know, and I will teach him what I have learned. Weare "all" equal; if I fall down he will help me up, and if

he falls, he won't lack my hand to help him getback on his feet.

When we finish training, maybe eight hours will have passedand my training partners might have been a Belgian, aNorwegian, a German, an Italian or a Portuguese. Language, age, physical condition or height doesn't matter at all. That'snot relevant, we are only asked to work out and enjoy.

When we finish training we don't split, we stay for dinner,we go sightseeing, we visit a beach, a port, a monument; wewalk through a park. With your car? With mine? In the end itdoesn't matter; in fact, last year I ended up going to the beachwith a Czech, a Norwegian, a Nicaraguan and a Spaniard, andalthough it might seem the beginning of the typical Spanishjoke, it was one of the funniest moments of my life.

B.I.: HOW IS THE FIGURE OF MY GREAT MASTER?Well, being honest with you and with myself, I don't have

only one master, I was lucky enough to be able to developmyself in Keysi, receiving daily lessons for six months inMurcia, where my masters were Fernando Gómez and JustoDiéguez himself. Six months where we trained day and night;where I met the family of both of them; where I felt at homebeing away from home. Welcomed and protected where I wasI and not one more, because for them I'm Juanjo and mytraining mates are named each by their own names, and notby a membership number.

Maybe you understand now a little more why Keysi is"Family" for me, but if you ask another instructor he will tellyou exactly the same. Keysi has opened my mind in ways Icouldn't imagine, and I can only be grateful to everyone.

Never give up!

Each year all students of theKUNG FU SCHOOL MARTINSEWER look very much forward toone particular event in the calendarof the school, namely the annual

MEGA event. Especially becauseeach year the students as wellas the organising committeemanage to make this annual“meeting of the elite” evenbetter than the last year.

Kung Fu

or the first time in the history of the MEGAevent, this year it all started already in theafternoon when participants were invited totake part in various highly interesting seminars. At that moment, at 3 pm in the afternoon,

numerous guests were already present, all in their Kung Fuuniform, and were eagerly awaiting the upcomingseminars. Experts in individual areas of our art offered thestudents insight into efficient fighting systems such as the“Kam Na” techniques, Hung Gar’s answer to grappling or“Chat Sing Lin Wan Kuen” techniques. These seminarswere completely free of charge for the guests of theevening. They are a priceless and precious additional valuefor every student and are a further step towards Expo, which should develop from the MEGA Event. As it had

been perfectly organised the participants were guidedthrough the hotel, towards the shower rooms, dressing andchanging rooms. For only few hours later, they all gottogether in the entrance hall where refreshments wereserved. Shortly after the arrival of the guests the doorswere already opened and one could enter the inviting hall.Of course not without the walk to the area for the photoshooting, where the most important guests and those whoaccompanied them had their photo taken. Once all theguests had taken their seats, a particularly joyous momentfollowed: Grandmaster Martin Sewer appeared on stageamidst roaring applause and already announced the firstbig news, i.e. the MEGA seminar on the 30th January2016, at which his master, Kung Fu legend Dr. Chiu ChiLing, teaches in Switzerland. All participants were very

F

pleased and excited about this newsand the possibility of registering forthe seminar on that very sameevening. For when did one have theopportunity to learn from one’s headof style and such an icon? Onehighlight followed the other. Rightafter the great news followed aninformative presentation on the hostand the persons in charge of theevent: The KUNG FU SCHOOLMARTIN SEWER. To summarise inshort, the presentation showed thatthe last year’s set goals had beenpursued in an exemplary manner andthat the set goals had been achieved. But it also showed which ambitiousgoals one would pursue in 2016.Shortly after the traditional ceremonywith Grandmaster Martin Sewerfollowed, in which all the guests andstudents handed over their Lai Si(lucky money in red envelopes) toGrandmaster Martin Sewer and couldpersonally congratulate him. To theastonishment of many new faces inthe audience Grandmaster MartinSewer announced after the ceremony

Kung Fu

that he would double the receivedamount of money (severalthousand francs) out of his ownpockets and would donate it.Those guests who were advancedstudents knew that GrandmasterMartin Sewer made this selflessgesture at the MEGA event eachyear. Right after that the guestsproceeded to the delicious buffetand enjoyed an excellent dinner. After the meal the next item on

the programme already followed. Itis well known that such a successlike the one of the KUNG FUSCHOOL MARTIN SEWER,eventually, is not only dependent onone person but on a big team. Ateam, to which not only instructors, but also helpful assistant instructorcandidates, assistant instructorsand referees belong. And it wasprecisely these members of theteam, which were at that momentasked on the stage to be awardedfor their success, which was

acknowledged with a big round of applause. Also at thatinstant the “Student of the Year” of all schools wasawarded for his very extraordinary achievements andperformance in 2015. Right after that the assistantinstructor candidates were honoured for assisting theinstructors with the same love and dedication that theirinstructors exemplify each lesson. And finally, of coursethe achieved tournament successes should also bementioned. So the participants and winners of thetournaments, who were very successful at the WorldChampionship in Argentina and in Germany and whocould get numerous places on the podium, were askedon the stage. After this big moment and the last round ofapplause, there was an atmosphere of anticipation in theaudience. Indeed, there was still an exquisite dessert tobe explored, but almost everyone knew that the legendaryBlack Belt Show was about to begin. The last bite of thedessert had just been taken, when the light was dimmed. In excitement, many a spectator and even employees ofthe hotel got out their mobile phones and video camerasin order to record the show. Highlighted with impressive, perfectly placed music, the elite, all of them holders of thefirst dan black belt, showed their skills in a 40-minuteshow, managing to impress the audience with each sceneanew. Stories of profound meanings were told, impressivestunts and the real Shaolin Kung Fu of the KUNG FUSCHOOL MARTIN SEWER were shown. The show endedwith thunderous applause, which the audience dedicatedto the Black Belts on the stage, and one unequivocallyagreed: They did it again! They really managed to exceedlast year’s Black Belt Show. After the stormy applause hadquietened down and the Black Belts had changedclothes, one went on to the last item of the programme.Throughout the whole evening the guests had thepossibility to write down questions which they had alwaysbeen wanting to ask Grandmaster Martin Sewer and/orhis guests of honour. During the Black Belt Show thequestions were collected. Of course Grandmaster MartinSewer answered the numerous questions of the guestsand students with a certain sense of humour. He repliedto the last question on a more serious note though: “It isvery important that we gather on days like this. Of course,we celebrate my birthday, but what is far more importantis the fact that we, the best martial artists in the world, come together and talk with each other, learn from eachother and have a good time. This is what it is all about. For my part, I am already looking forward to next year.”

"What we know is a water drop;what we ignore is the ocean.”

Isaac Newton

Flow doesn't mean being sloppy; definitely, water is not so, forit doesn't leave any corner uncovered... it reaches everywhere! As asturian

people say, "water has a very fine snout". Unhurried, coupling tothe circumstances, water is a metaphor for the persistence andextreme adaptability. It's the paradigm of changing in the formwithout transforming the essence.

Water catalyzes life; without water, the land dries and gets barren;and the fire, without a controller, spreads everywhere and the air, tur-ned into a sandstorm, cannot carry the fertility of the clouds, or theforce of the changes. Even iron is wrought by the use of fire in the forges!

Water is the cradle of all life, the primary livelihood of both inanimateand animate beings, all of them "bags" of hotter and hotter waters, accor-ding to their degree of evolution, and adapted to a change that weaccompany, of which we are part, and not guilty, as somewould have us believe. The "terminal sin" is the Judeo-Christian guilt of environmentalism.

Water comforts us, cleanses us, and blesses us.Wet in the rivers of the moment, we swim, fight,wreck...

Flowing, adapting to the barriers, going down, not opposing anything, water is the perfectanalogy of humility, adaptation and not con-flict. The water wins aimlessly; following itsnature, it surrounds any obstacle and tea-ches us how to overcome, but with wisdom, free from wear and tear, without losing sightof the goal. What is a rock on the road, amountain…? Even trapped in betweencliffs and narrow passages, water filters,or evaporates if such a thing is not pos-sible; nothing stops its destination.

It's been the river of life that has leftin my shores these texts, which todayI share in book format. And I say "itleft" because all authorship is at leastconfusing, since we are all deb-tors of those before us, thosewho inspired and keep inspi-ring us, of the floating cloudsof the collective unconscious, and even, who knows!, of thespirits and the consciousnessaround us.

I can't teach anythingbecause I don't know any-thing, but for those who wishto hear my poems, here I leavemy sincere and truly feltthoughts, every time more felt andless thought, because mind is adeceptive device that sees what itwants to see and I’ve learned to besuspicious about it.

he Koshinkan association is headed by TakayaYabiku Sensei, master of the old guard and conside-red one of the greatest experts of ko-ryu (old style)karate and Hakutsuru-ken, ie the Okinawa WhiteCrane Fist. After many years of voluntary isolation, due to some unpleasant events linked to former stu-

dents, who saw him regretfully involved and left him extremelyunhappy, Yabiku Sensei decided to take up the fate of theirtechnical heritage in order to preserve it and pass as it hasbeen taught by his beloved teachers. He has therefore drawnup a program of study that was suggested and endorsed byhis last teacher still alive, Seiji Irimaji Sensei. It combines hisexperiences in the Orthodox styles and his personal historicaland technical research that began in the late 70s; in this way itwas born the Sinzanryu Karate Kobudo.

SINZAN-RYU KARATE KOBUDO

THE HIDDEN STYLE OF OKINAWA

As a result of a meticulous researchand preservation of the most ancientroots of the art of Okinawan karate andkobudo, borns the system calledSinzanryu™ 振山流, preserved by theOkinawa Sinzanryu Koshinkan KarateKobudo Kyokai ™ of Okinawa. The Sinzanryu is a "secret" system

that is practiced according to the logicand the characteristics of oldest tea-ching, and the main purpose of theKoshinkan association is to transmit itto future generations following the dic-tates of orthodox method preserved byhonbu of Okinawa.

“The biggestdream of Yabiku

Sensei is tospread the

Sinzanryu KarateKobudo,

preserving theart as it washanded down,

without changesand according to

the mostorthodox spirit.”

Over his more than sixty years of practicing karate andkobudo, Yabiku Sensei trained under several famousOkinawan and Chinese masters, but some of these tea-chers can be considered those that have most shaped “hisstyle" as it’s intelligible from his own words: <<The mostimportant teachers of my life have been Seiji Irimaji Sensei,Hohan Soken Sensei and Kochinda Saburo Sensei, becau-se they were role models for me, in the martial art as in life. They taught me the old bujutsu of Okinawa and the impor-tance of having a big heart. Irimaji Sensei taught me thesecrets of oldest karate, opening my mind on how it’s lin-ked to the ancient Chinese fighting and how it’s importantto rediscover its roots. I remember that Soken Sensei oftentold me about the Matsumura family and about the impor-tance that this family had in the development of karate.Kochinda Sensei taught me the history and technique ofthe ancient Okinawan kobudo and our traditions. I think I’mvery lucky to have met them and trained myself with theseliving legends of Okinawa>>.

The biggest dream of Yabiku Sensei is to spread theSinzanryu Karate Kobudo, preserving the art as it was han-ded down, without changes and according to the mostorthodox spirit.

Yabiku Sensei often taught, in the past, kata or techni-ques to people outside of his school, both Okinawans andforeigners. For example, it’s known that some famous mas-ters of Okinawa (... omissis ...) often sent their sons to thehome of Yabiku Sensei to learn kata from Koshiroryu orMatsumura Seito Shorinryu. Yabiku Sensei, however, didn’tteach publicly for a long time, and the last decade he hadvery few "internal students" initiated into the Sinzanryusystem; Prof Angelo Bonanno, Koshinkan Shibu-cho forItaly, now he’s ni-daime 二代 目 (second generation) forSinzanryu and currently the only one authorized to teachthe complete program of the system.

Karate & Kobudo

UCHINAA-DII AND CH'UAN-FA WISELY MIXED

The Sinzanryu karate of Yabiku Sensei is the result of its 60 years of training inOkinawa styles, and the research of Chinese roots, realized in over 35 years of

study of Koshiroryu. The system, in fact, includes methods and techniques ofoldest karate, with clear roots in indigenous Tii and animals imitation styles of

Chinese Ch'uan-fa.The Sinzanryu includes the fight method of the famous Koshiro family (com-

monly known as Kojo), and rare kata of Hakutsuru-ken (White Crane Fist) method, that was imported from China. The school also wants to preserve and spread thewidest concept of an old Okinawan karate that in the past was called "village kara-te", as it was practiced when there was no distinction of styles as conceived today. Therefore you can also learn techniques of other methods of Shuri-te and Naha-te, and that thanks to the great experience and knowledge of Yabiku Sensei. The

study program of Sinzanryu, specifically, has a number of kata of Shuri-

te as the technical basis for beginners and intermediate level, and kata ofthe Koshiroryu and Hakutsuru-ken as the core of the system for advancedstudents:

- from the Matsumura Seito Shorinryu - Naihanchi, Pinan, Paisai, Rohaiand Kushanku. These kata are most likely rooted in Wuxing-quan, the style

of the Five Animals of Ch'uan-fa, with the strong influence of the WhiteCrane Fist;

- from the Koshiroryu - Tenkan, Kukan, Chikan, Hakko, Hakkaku,Hakuryu. These forms have probable roots in Xingyi-quan (Box Bodyand Mind), being in fact a mix of the twelve animals of the Chinese

Zodiac of Ch'uan-fa;- from the Hakutsuru-ken system - Shorinji-ken, Nipaipo,

Sesan, Ruken Sanchin, Tsuru Sanchin, Matsumura Hakutsuru,Fukien Hakutsuru. All these kata come from the Baihe-quan

of Fujian Ch'uan-fa (or Fukien Hakutsuru-ken) cleverlyfused with Okinawan techniques, with minor influences

from other styles of imitation, especially the Tiger style. These kata, in addition to teaching the techniques

typical of Crane Fist, provide useful exercises of ki-kou (qi-gong) and represent the depth of the

system. The Sinzanryu is an extremely aggressive

fight system, which harmoniously blends thetypical features of Chinese styles of imitation

“The Sinzanryukarate of Yabiku

Sensei is theresult of its 60years of trainingin Okinawa styles, and the research of

Chinese roots,realized in over

35 years of study ofKoshiroryu.”

“The Sinzanryuincludes the fight

method of the famousKoshiro family

(commonly known asKojo), and rare kataof Hakutsuru-ken(White Crane

Fist) method, ”

Karate & Kobudo

with native Uchinaa-dii, with particular emphasison the features from the method of the WhiteCrane.

The most important feature of Sinzanryu, therefo-re, is its real nature as a fight method inspired by theimitation styles of animals; kata that arise fromKoshiroryu method, in fact, are founded on techni-ques and tactics related to the 12 animals of theChinese Zodiac. Specifically, the three Kata Tenkan,Kukan and Chikan, contain a total of 12 kamae-gata(or forms of guard positions); each of them repre-sents an animal and characterizes its performance. The three advanced kata, Hakko, Hakkaku andHakuryu, are respectively based on the styles WhiteTiger, White Crane and White Dragon. The strategyof Sinzanryu becomes better as the practice leads tomastery of the techniques that are derived from theWhite Crane Fist, summit considered ideal technicalsystem.

The Sinzanryu, unlike most other styles of karate, uses a little bit of seiken-tsuki technique; it mostlyuses the tate-tsuki, the ippon-ken, the hiji-uchi, thenikute-uchi, the shuto-uchi and shotei-uchi. It is astyle full of tegumi (or tui-te), ie techniques of jointdislocation, which in the orthodox jargon of thesystem are identified as techniques to shake thebranches and leaves, and tear the reeds.

The heiho-jutsu (strategy) of Sinzanryu is complexand consists in various autonomous tactics linkedtogether; the focal point is the ongoing implementa-tion of the atemi-no-jutsu (commonly known askyusho-jutsu) to annihilate the opponent at the firstmoment when you break out on him. The techniquesare chained to leave no time to react; each techniquecan act as a barrier to the attacks of the opponentbut at the same time it opens the gate to the nexttechnique, and all techniques are taken with theintention to hit the body and cause pain.

As all old styles of karate, the soul of Sinzanryu liesin its kata, because in them the karateka finds all thetypical technical vocabulary of the system, the fighttactics and the indispensable energy workout. Allkata of Sinzanryu are unique in their enbusen and intheir techniques, since there is no other style of kara-te that has similar kata to those of this system.

Karate & Kobudo

Karate & Kobudo

LEGACY OF A TECHNICAL & CULTURAL TRADITION

The Sinzanryu, as mentioned above, includes not only the fight with theirempty hands, in the sense of karate, but also the study of fight methods withtypical weapons of Okinawan tradition. Such as any dojo in Okinawa, also forKoshinkan it is of utmost importance to preserve the ancient indigenous tradition, and Yabiku Sensei believes that kobudo has an high technical and cultural value;for this reason, thanks to his practice completed under various well-known mas-ters of Okinawa, he has incorporated in the Sinzanryu system the methods ofMatayoshi line and Yamanniryu (or Yamaneryu), as well as some rare kata impor-ted from China.

Currently the Sinzanryu includes the study of traditional weapons such rokus-haku-bo, sai, tunfa, nunchaku, kama, eku, with the addition of less used wea-pons such as tan-bo nitan-bo, tsue-bo and yawara-bo.

It is important to highlight that the large number of proposed kata, of emptyhand and weapons, is linked precisely to the research and preservation of histo-

rical and technical roots of karate and kobudo, as well as it’s linked to the opportunity to learn techniques and tactics forfight that lead students to discover by themself the Way that most suits them.

The Sinzanryu is also a very spiritual creed, and Yabiku Sensei is a very wise teacher. He often refers to the traditionalphilosophies and indigenous culture to reflect on aspects of life, and tells anecdotes lived with his beloved masters or toldhim by them during their training.

Sensei often says that the Sinzanryu can be practiced only by those who have a great kokoro (heart and soul); he saysthat simplicity is the most complex and important technique, in the doctrine of fight such as in the doctrine of morals. Thekarateka must be a simple person, with pure heart: it will lead to the correct Way to become a real strong karateka, andone day to have full mastery in the Sinzanryu.

This article was authorized by Yabiku Sensei, and it’s an extract from the technical manual written for the most part bythe Master. It will be soon edited by his direct student, Prof Angelo Bonanno, with permission of the teacher.

“Currently the Sinzanryu includesthe study of traditional weaponssuch rokushaku-bo, sai, tunfa,

nunchaku, kama, eku, with the addition of less used

weapons such as tan-bo nitan-bo,tsue-bo and yawara-bo.”
