CHALLENGING GOD Ancient Judaism held in highest regard those figures in its tradition who were willing to challenge God. This was particularly characteristic of the two patriarchs most highly esteemed, Abraham and Moses. This boldness in addressing God is present in today’s story from Genesis, when Abraham attempts to save the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. This resonates with the Gospel passage—the Lord’s Prayer—since it was truly bold of Jesus to address the Lord God as “Abba.” Our familiarity with this prayer most likely makes us unaware of this. The boldness of Abraham, Moses, and Jesus in addressing God is an expression of a deep, intimate relationship. We tend to argue most heatedly with and speak most tenderly to those whom we love the most. This very human trait is what generates the wide variety of emotions expressed toward God throughout the psalms. Hopefully our own relationship with God is intimate enough that we don’t only come asking for favors or with heads bowed meekly, but also ready to question and argue, to praise joyfully, and to embrace our relationship with God lovingly.

RETAR A DIOS El antiguo judaísmo admiraba a aquellas figuras en su tradi-ción que osaban retar a Dios. Esto era particularmente característico de los dos patriarcas más altamente estimados: Abraham y Moisés. Esta osadía al dirigirse a Dios se nos presenta hoy en la historia de Génesis, cuando Abraham trata de salvar las ciudades de Sodoma y Gomorra. Y se refleja en el pasaje evangélico –el Padre Nuestro– pues fue ciertamente asombroso que Jesús osara llamar a Dios “Abba”. Nuestra familiaridad con esta oración posiblemente hace que no lo notemos. El valor de Abraham, Moisés y Jesús al dirigirse a Dios es una expresión de una relación profundamente íntima. Tendemos a argumentar más calurosamente y a hablar con más ternura con aque-llos a quienes más amamos. Esta misma tendencia es la que genera la amplia variedad de emociones expresadas hacia Dios en los salmos. Confiemos en que nuestra relación con Dios sea tan íntima que no solamente vengamos a él a pedirle favores o con nuestra frente incli-nada humildemente, sino también listos a cuestionar y argumentar, a alabar gozosos y a abrazar amorosos nuestra relación con Dios.

Did You Know? Never leave your children in a hot car. Did you know that it only takes 10 minutes for a car to heat up by 19 degrees? Every so often we hear news stories of parents forgetting infants or leaving a sleeping toddler in the car, and tragedies that ensue. Never leave a child alone in a car, even for a minute. Degrees can be deceiving. Fatalities can occur at temperatures as low as the mid-50s because a vehicle heats up so quickly. Children are at a great risk for heat stroke because their bodies heat up three to five times faster than an adult. Cracking a window? Not a solution. Some advanced technologies are still being developed that may help prevent heat stroke deaths in vehicles, but nothing has been proven effective yet. The Tri-Parish Picnic

Our Annual Tri-Parish Picnic (Santa Rosa, St. Ferdinand & Mary Immaculate) will be on Sunday August 25th. As usual the picnic will be at the San Buenaventura State Beach so mark your calendars now and don’t forget to tell your family members. The cost for the bus will be $12 per person and for those who will drive their own car, parking tickets will cost $10 per car. Prayer & Life Workshop Would you like to know how to go about seeking God in prayer, and what happens when you do? Do you want to be filled with peace that surpasses all understanding? Come join a workshop for learning how to pray. The 15 Prayer and Life Workshop sessions provide a care-fully structured school for learning and practicing the art of prayer. You will learn how to pray and you will become more familiar with the Bible by using it to seek God during the workshop sessions and during your private times for prayer and meditation. Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios La oración ha sido siempre parte de la herencia cristiana. El salterio hace mucho tiempo que es el libro de oración de la Iglesia junto con algunos himnos y cánticos, que provienen de otros libros de la Biblia, tanto del Antiguo como del Nuevo Testamento. Entre las oraciones más hermosas que tenemos se encuentra el Magnificat de María, el Benedictus de Zacarías y el Nunc Dimittis de Simeón, todos en el Evan-gelio de Lucas (Lucas 1:46–55; 1:68–79; 2:29–32). Lo más importante es que Jesús oró. Piensa en eso por un momento. Jesús, el Hijo de Dios, la Palabra hecha carne, Hijo único del Padre, oró. Sabemos que se retiró a orar solo. Así lo hizo antes de los momentos más importantes de su ministerio, como cuando fue a escoger a los que estarían más cerca de él. Pero podemos asumir con seguridad que lo hacía como un hábito. Por eso merece nuestra atención que, cuando uno de los discípulos le pidió que los enseñaran a orar, Jesús respondió con el Padrenuestro. Esta oración revela el corazón de Jesús y nos dice cómo debemos hablar con el Padre. La oración consta de dos partes: la primera bendice al Padre y le pide su presencia en el mundo, la segunda suplica a Dios por nuestras necesidades básicas de alimento, perdón y fidelidad. Las parábolas que le siguen nos exhortan a perseverar y persistir en nuestra oración, porque Dios es un Padre que nos dará lo más vital, o sea, su Espíritu Santo a todos los que lo pidan. Continúa llamando, continúa pidiendo. Dios te responderá.

Reflecting on God’s Word Prayer has always been part of the Christian heritage. The book of Psalms long ago became the prayer book of the church, along with some hymns and canticles from other books of the Bible, both Old and New Testaments. Among the most beautiful prayers we have are the Mag-nificat of Mary, the Benedictus of Zechariah, and the Nunc Dimittis of Simeon, all in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 1:46–55; 1:68–79; 2:29–32). Most importantly, Jesus prayed. Think about that for a moment. Jesus, the Son of God, the Word made flesh, the only begotten Son, prayed. We know that he went off by himself to pray. He did this before some of the most important moments in his ministry, like when he chose those who would be with him. But it is safe to assume that he did it as a habit. So when one of the disciples asked him to teach them to pray and Jesus responded with the Our Father, it deserves our attention. This prayer reveals the heart of Jesus, and tells us how we should speak to the Father. The prayer has two parts: blessing the Father and calling for his presence in the world, then turning to God for our basic needs of food, forgiveness, and fidelity. The parables that follow call us to persevere and persist in prayer because God is a Father who will give us his life-blood, in this case, the Holy Spirit, to all who ask. Continue to knock, continue to ask. God will respond.

"GO AND MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS" (Matt. 28:19) "Go and make disciples of all nations" (Mt 28:19) is the major focus of World Youth Day, which begun in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, July 23 to 28, 2013. The Church urges all young people to be disciples and missionaries of Jesus Christ and to bring the Good News to all people and especially the youth. In particular the World Youth Day wants the youth to take the torch of the new evangelization and to become disciples and missionaries in the world today. Young people are being called to be the main protagonists of this historical moment of the Church and the world. Youth be brave and generous to answer the call of Christ, who invites you to be His disciples and mission-aries. Pope Francis has said something very striking: "YOUNG GO AGAINST THE CURRENT", this is an invitation from the Pope to the youth to challenge the negative values with the values of the Gospel of Christ. The world and present society promote the cul-ture of death, the young must promote the culture of life. Society promotes a culture of hatred, violence, revenge, and war. Young people need to promote the culture of love, forgiveness, and peace. Ask God, this week especially, for all participants in the World Youth Day and especially the youth, to become disciples and missionaries and to always take joy and hope to others.

YOUNG HAVE NO FEAR, CHRIST AND THE CHURCH NEED YOU!

"VAYAN Y HAGAN DISCIPULOS A TODAS LAS NACIONES" (Mt. 28:19)

"Vayan y hagan discípulos a todas las naciones" (Mt. 28:19) es el gran tema central de toda la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud, que se acaba de realizar en Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, del 23 al 28 de Julio del 2013. La Iglesia urge a todos los jóvenes a ser discípulos y misioneros de Jesucristo y a llevar la Buena Nueva a todas las personas y espe-cialmente a los jóvenes. De manera especial la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud desea que los jóvenes tomen la antorcha de la Nue-va Evangelización y que se conviertan en discípulos y misioneros en el mundo de hoy. Los jóvenes están siendo llamados a ser los principales protagonistas de este momento histórico de la Iglesia y del mundo. Jóvenes sean valientes y generosos para responder al llamado de Cristo, que los invita a ser sus discípulos y sus misioneros. El Papa Francisco ha dicho una frase muy impactante: "JOVENES VAYAN CONTRA LA CORRIENTE", esta es una invitación del Papa a los jóvenes para que desafíen los antivalores del Evangelio con los valores de Cristo. El mundo y la sociedad actual promueven la cultura de la muerte; los jóvenes deben pro-mover la cultura de la vida. La sociedad promueve la cultura del odio, de la violencia, de la venganza, y la guerra. Los jóvenes tie-nen que promover la cultura del amor, del perdón, y la paz. Pidamos a Dios, en esta semana especialmente para que todas las per-sonas participantes en la jornada mundial y especialmente la juventud, se conviertan en discípulos y misioneros que lleven siempre alegría y esperanza a otros.

¡JOVENES NO TENGAN MIEDO, CRISTO Y LA IGLESIA LOS NECESITA!
