HOLY COMMUNION M ARY , MOTHER OF OUR LORD

Friday, August 15, 2014 + 7:00 p.m.

MY SOUL PROCLAIMS THE GREATNESS OF THE LORD  Mary's role is not limited to giving birth to Jesus and mothering him in his childhood. In John's gospel, she is among the women standing near the cross; in Acts, she is among the disciples awaiting the giftof the Spirit. Through all that happened she continued to see how God was at work through her son, keeping the ancient promises to her ancestors, brushing aside the rich and powerful, and focusing onthose as poor and powerless as Mary herself.

The church (including Martin Luther) honored Mary with the title theotokos, meaning "God-bearer," for her role in giving birth to the Son of God. Her song, the Magnificat, speaks eloquently of God'slifting the lowly and feeding the hungry.

M ARY , MOTHER OF OUR LORD  3

The assembly kneels or sits.Silence is kept for reflection and self-examination.

God our strength, we confess that we are captive to the power of sin that dwells within us.  We put ourselves first and others last.  What we think will make us happy  leaves us longing for more. Even when we want to do what is good,  we find ourselves doing the opposite.

Rescue us from death's grip on our lives, and raise us up day by day, that we may be alive to God in Christ Jesus.  Amen.

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God;therefore we are justified by God's grace as a gift.

Nothing can separate usfrom the love of God in Christ Jesus,in whom we have forgiveness of sin, life, and salvation.

As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christand by his authority, I therefore declare to you

the entire forgiveness of all your sins.In the Name of the Father, and of the +Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

The GATHERING HYMN  Savior of the Nations, Come

The GREETING & PRAYER OF THE DAYThe presiding minister and the assembly greet each other .

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of theHoly Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

The presiding minister prays the prayer of the day.

Let us pray…the prayer concludes…one God, now and forever. Amen.

The assembly is seated.

WORD  God’s Word is proclaimed in Scripture reading and preaching

The FIRST READING  Isaiah 61:7-11The prophet proclaims a hopeful message: The Lord loves justice and will make an everlastingcovenant with Israel and her descendants. In response, the prophet sings a joyful song, like Marymany generations later, about God's mercy and salvation.

7Because their shame was double, and dishonor was proclaimed as their lot,

Page 5: Mary Mother of Our Lord

therefore they shall possess a double portion;everlasting joy shall be theirs.

8For I the LORD love justice,I hate robbery and wrongdoing;

I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.

9Their descendants shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples;all who see them shall acknowledgethat they are a people whom the LORD has blessed.

10I will greatly rejoice in the LORD,

my whole being shall exult in my God;for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation,he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

11For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up,

so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praiseto spring up before all the nations.

The reading concludes:

Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

The SECOND READING  Galatians 4:4-7In the promise of the Incarnation, Jesus Christ embodies God's heart, in love claiming people asadopted children.

4But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, bornunder the law, 5in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that wemight receive adoption as children. 6 And because you are children, God has sentthe Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" 7So you are no longer a

slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.

The reading concludes:

Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

The assembly stands to welcome the Gospel.

The GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

The HOLY GOSPEL  Luke 1:46-55

Mary's song, the Magnificat, serves as a thematic anthem for God's work in the world and therefore for the ministry of her son, Jesus. In Mary's praise we hear of a saving God who remembers thehumble, scatters the proud, lifts up the lowly, and fulfills all things.

The Lord be with you.

And also with you. The Holy +1 Gospel according to Luke.Glory to you, O Lord.

46 And Mary said,"My soul magnifies the Lord,

47and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,48for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.

Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;49for the Mighty One has done great things for me,

and holy is his name.50His mercy is for those who fear him

from generation to generation.51He has shown strength with his arm;

he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.52He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,

and lifted up the lowly;53he has filled the hungry with good things,

and sent the rich away empty.54He has helped his servant Israel,

in remembrance of his mercy,55according to the promise he made to our ancestors,

to Abraham and to his descendants forever."

1 Using the thumb, the people may make three small signs of the cross, one on the forehead, one on the lips, and one on the breast whilesilently using the traditional prayer, “May the Good News of Jesus Christ be in my mind, and on my lips, and in my heart. Amen”

The SERMON

Martin Luther, Commentary on the Magnificat, (Luther’s Works Vol. 21, p. 326)

[S]he became the Mother of God, in which work so many and such great good

things are bestowed on her as pass man’s understanding. For on this there followsall honor, all blessedness, and her unique place in the whole of mankind, among which she has no equal, namely, that she had a child by the Father in heaven, andsuch a Child. She herself is unable to find a name for this work, it is tooexceedingly great; all she can do is break out in the fervent cry: “They are greatthings,” impossible to describe or define. Hence men have crowded all her gloryinto a single word, calling her the Mother of God. No one can say anything greater

of her or to her, though he had as many tongues as there are leaves on the trees, orgrass in the fields, or stars in the sky, or sand by the sea. It needs to be pondered inthe heart what it means to be the Mother of God

Martin Luther, Personal Prayer Book  (Luther’s Works, Vol. 43, pp. 39, 40, 41)

The Hail Mary Take note of this: no one should put his trust or confidence in the Mother of

God or in her merits, for such trust is worthy of God alone and is the lofty servicedue only to him. Rather praise and thank God through Mary and the grace givenher. Laud and love her simply as the one who, without merit, obtained suchblessings from God, sheerly out of his mercy, as she herself testifies in theMagnificat [Luke 1:46–55].

Let not our hearts cleave to her, but through her penetrate to Christ and toGod himself. Thus what the Hail Mary says is that all glory should be given to God,

using these words: “Hail, Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee [Luke 1:28];blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus Christ. Amen.”

You see that these words are not concerned with prayer but purely with givingpraise and honor. Similarly there is no petition in the first words of the Lord’sPrayer but rather praise and glorification that God is our Father and that he is inheaven. Therefore we should make the Hail Mary neither a prayer nor an

invocation because it is improper to interpret the words beyond what they mean inthemselves and beyond the meaning given them by the Holy Spirit.

Page 8: Mary Mother of Our Lord

8  M ARY , MOTHER OF OUR LORD

The conclusion of this is that in the present no one speaks evil of this Motherand her Fruit as much as those who bless her with many rosaries and constantlymouth the Hail Mary. These, more than any others, speak evil against Christ’s word and faith in the worst way.

Therefore, notice that this Mother and her Fruit are blessed in a twofold way—bodily and spiritually. Bodily with lips and the words of the Hail Mary; suchpersons blaspheme and speak evil of her most dangerously. And spiritually [oneblesses her] in one’s heart by praise and benediction for her child, Christ—for allhis words, deeds, and sufferings. And no one does this except he who has the trueChristian faith because without such faith no heart is good but is by nature stuffedfull of evil speech and blasphemy against God and all his saints. For that reason he

who has no faith is advised to refrain from saying the Hail Mary and all otherprayers because to such a person the words apply: Let his prayer be sin [Ps. 109:7].

Silence for reflection.

The CREED With the whole people of God, let us confess our faith. We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father.Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven;by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate2 from the virgin Mary, and wasmade man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen

The assembly may remain standing or kneel.

The PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLEGod our Savior works revolutions in the earth and turns the world upsidedown. Let us proclaim the greatness of the Lord and rejoice in our God,praying for the Church, the world, and all those in need.

After each petition.Let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

The prayers conclude

The salvation and the power of the Kingdom of our God and the authorityof Christ has come. We proclaim the greatness of the Lord, and we rejoicein God our Savior, praising God in his Son our Lord, now and forever. Amen.

2 Martin Luther, in his Commentary on the Gospel of John encouraged the continuation of the ancient tradition of bowing during this

portion of the Creed until “For our sake…” because “the Divine Majesty abased Himself and became like us poor bags of worms, and

to thank God for the ineffable mercy and compassion reflected in the incarnation.” (Luther’s Works, Vol. 22, pp. 102, 105)
