The Wizard of Oz Audition F. A. Q.
1) Who can audition for The Wizard of Oz? ANYONE who is registered for MYP can audition!
2) Do I have to audition? Nope. Only students interested in a lead or supporting role need to audition. Any student not auditioning will be assigned to one (or more) choruses. EVERYONE will appear on stage!
3) I don’t want a singing part. Can I just read lines in my audition? Nope. MYP produces musical theater, and EVERYONE on stage will be singing. Even non-singing roles will sing chorus numbers.
4) Should I read every part on the audition scripts I choose? We would prefer that you ask your mom, dad, or sibling to read the other parts (this is called “reading opposite” of you). This will help with the flow of your audition.
5) Do the lines need to be memorized? Nope….but it’s OK if they are! We have found over the years that kiddos who memorize their lines are more confident and can “act” the part better. Whatever you do, don’t read the lines cold – that’s why we provide the audition sides ahead of time, so you can practice!
6) Who will see my audition video? Only the MYP judges (3-5 musical/theater folks that have been involved with MYP for many years). After the cast list is released, feel free to delete the video – we’ll do the same!
7) Should I sing with music or acapella (no music)? Please sing with the accompaniment track provided (the one without the voices!).
8) What are the judges looking for? The judges are looking for volume (can we hear you?), annunciation/diction (can we understand you?), enthusiasm/energy/personality (are you acting the part or just reading/singing the words?). For the singing portion, we’re also listening for pitch, tonality, and accuracy (are you singing with the music?).
9) What if I don’t get the part I want? Whew, that’s a tough question! Well, there are only so many parts and a LOT of kiddos trying out. The MYP judges are trying to find the right student for the right part – based on age, height, vocal ability, acting, costuming, etc. (this is why it takes SO MANY HOURS to cast!). Here’s the thing you need to know: EVERY PERSON ON THE STAGE IS IMPORTANT! If you wanted Dorothy but was cast as Apple Tree #2, be the BEST Apple Tree #2 you can be! The smaller roles are what make the show…and we PROMISE you’ll have a great time no matter what!
The Wizard of Oz - 2020 Virtual Audition Process Due to our current social distancing situation, Maryville Young Players will be holding auditions for our 14th (!) summer musical theatre camp ONLINE! Yep, we’re going high tech and totally virtual. What does that mean? Well, any student interested in auditioning for The Wizard of Oz will record a video of themselves singing a part of a song from the show and reading some lines. Note: ONLY those students interested in a lead or supporting role (with lines and/or singing) need to audition. Any student not auditioning will appear on stage in the chorus. 2) Using your phone, tablet, or webcam, record your video audition, like this: • First, Smile! Then say your name, age, and what grade you will be in next year • Second, Tell us what part you are interested in. If you don’t want a specific part, tell us
that! • Third, Sing one of the songs that are included in this packet. Note: some characters will
sing specific songs – listed at the top of each piece of sheet music. For example, the Cowardly Lion will sing part of If I Were King of the Forest. If your character does not have a song listed, or if you are trying out for any role, you can sing any of the songs.
o Links to the audition music are provided at http://www.maryvilleyoungplayers.org/auditions.html. When you do your audition, be sure to use the track without the voices.
• Fourth, pick three of the audition sides (little script chunks) and recruit somebody in your house (mom, dad, sibling, talking dog) to read the other lines. If you are auditioning for a particular character, be sure at least one of the sides correspond to your lines. If your character doesn’t have any lines on any of the sides, just pick three that you like. You can also read different parts of the same side. The lines do not need to be memorized (but it’s OK if they are!).
3) All done! Now submit your video: • The preferred way would be for you to send us a link to the video. For example, if you
upload the video to Google Drive or DropBox, you can share a link with MYP (share your file with [email protected]). There may be other cloud services that would work too.
• Another way would be to upload to YouTube and send us the link. Just make sure your audition is set to “private”.
• If possible, we would prefer you not email the actual video directly to us. Video files are ginormous and would just tie up your bandwidth (and ours!).
• If you have trouble, drop us a line and we’ll come up with another plan.
AUDITION SIDES If you are auditioning for a lead role, please prepare the sides that correspond with the role you’re auditioning for. If you want a lead or supporting role, but do not have a character preference, you may prepare any of the below sides. You may be asked to read for another character, so it would be wise to look over all of them. These do not need to be memorized (but it's OK if they are!). Since you are auditioning on video, please have someone (mom, dad, sibling) read the other lines.
