Meet the 1st Grade Teachers

Morning Assembly

• Everyday at 7:45 we will have morning assembly! Please make sure your child is

here by then so we can work towards earning our perfect party!

• Mrs. French and Mrs. Jimmie will make announcements at this time as well as

recognize all birthdays for that day. • We will also have a moment of silence and

do the pledge of allegiance.

Agendas

• Please sign your child's agenda every night and look for notes from the teacher. This is

where we will mark their behavior for the day.• This is an excellent way to communicate with

your child’s teacher.

Behavior In first grade, we use the clip system.

Green: Ready to Learn / Great Day

Yellow: Think about your actions

Red: We need to do better

Grades

• One grade will be chosen from each subject each week that we will use for

the grade book.

Reading

*Reading Goal for First Grade – 60 wpm*Sight Word Goal – 600 words

*Center /Station work will include computer time: Odyssey: ELA, Math, Social Studies and

Science, Reading assignments, etc… *Homework assignments include reading 20 minutes daily. Please study sight words on the

homework sheet each night. They will be tested on Friday’s!

*Guided Reading; daily teacher guided, small group instruction.

*Saxon Phonics -daily phonics instruction

Math

*Daily Calendar Math *In first grade, students realize that math

involves solving problems through the use of appropriate strategies. Furthermore,

students will be able to show what they know using pictures, manipulatives, and

various strategies. *Math Marvels Wednesday mornings before

assembly

Writing

*First Grade Units of Study in writing will focus on Opinion, Informative and

Narrative Writing.*Writer’s Workshop will include working on

the writing process. Students will have daily writing instruction.

Science

Units in Science include: *Weather and Seasons

*Plants and Animals*Water

*Magnets*Sound

*Light and Sound

Social Studies

Units in Social Studies include:*Our National Heritage*A Changing Country

Special Classes

Students will rotate P.E., Art and Music classes each week.

On P.E. days please make sure your child wears tennis shoes and dresses

appropriately. If they do not dress appropriately they will have to sit out of P.E.

and this does affect their grade.

Parent Involvement

Mason Creek has many opportunities throughout the year where volunteers are needed. Information about volunteering is included in student packet.

Homework

Homework is given on Monday and is due on Friday. Homework includes reading for 20 minutes,

reviewing sight words, and a math review assignment. The first grade team collaborates to

come with the most beneficial assignments. Homework assignments support curriculum taught

in the classroom. The sight words on the homework sheet for each

week will be tested on Fridays for a grade.

Stay Connected!

Learning clip is an excellent way to in-cooperate technology into the classroom.

It provides students with the opportunity to actively participate and interact with their classmates in a

different way. Tally-Marks!
