From the Desk of Monsignor Carruthers I have shared with you many gifts given to the Church through of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Permit me one last opportunity to offer Ignatius’ wisdom to you, this time on the topic of “gratitude.” Of all the sins possible, Ignatius detests the sin of ingratitude the most. He writes, in a letter of March 18, 1542: “It seems to me, in light of the divine Goodness, though others may think differently, that ingratitude is one of the things most worthy of detestation before our Creator and Lord, and before all creatures capable of his divine and everlasting glory, out of all the evils and sins which can be imagined. For it is a failure to recognize the good things, the graces, and the gifts received. As such, it is the cause, beginning, and origin of all evils and sins. On the contrary, recognition and gratitude for the good things and gifts received is greatly loved and esteemed both in heaven and on earth.”

Transitions are a good time to “take stock.” As our time together at St. Augustine Church and Catholic Student Center draws to a close, it is important that we thank the Lord for the blessings He has showered upon us. We have been witnesses of God’s great care. Let us name just a few concrete things for which we ought to offer grateful hearts.

From a temporal perspective, a parish that was recommended for closure because of its precarious financial situation in 2010 is now financially stable. Indeed, we ended my first fiscal year here (2010-2011) with a loss of $12,526. We ended my second fiscal year here $190, 954 in the black. We have finished each year that followed at over $250,000 in the black. Our debt, including the bank loan, which in 2010 was over $1,200,000, has been reduced to under $800,000. Forty years of deferred maintenance that had caught up to us in 2010 has been, little by little, taken care of: The residence of the priests (the rectory) was declared “uninhabitable” in 2011. The roof was leaking profusely and the place was filled with mold. (Remember that I lived at Little Flower for eleven months.) The roof was completely replaced, the house cleaned of mold, and the interior and exterior painted, sealing properly the walls and windows. The Church and Student Center also received tender loving care. We repaired much of the roof, cleaned the eves, replaced rotten wooden fascia, replaced and upgraded the air conditioning ducts of the church, refinished the wood of the stage and the wood in the sacristy, replaced the curtain of the stage with one that is fireproof, re-purposed the library space (returning it to its original purpose), cleaned all the tile, repaired cracks in the courtyard and sidewalks, resurfaced the parking lot, added lighting to the parking lot, replaced the bricks in the breezeway (making the main entrance of the Church handicap accessible), painted the Church inside and out (as well as the rest of the student center) painted interior hallways, offices, and meeting rooms, replaced the carpet on the second floor with wood laminate, and opened space for a bookstore.

From a perspective of intellectual formation, we have seen many opportunities for growth in formation toward holiness. All were offered lecture series on such topics as: The Theology of the Body, Human and Spiritual Formation for Men, The Social Justice Teaching of the Church, The Rules for the Discernment of Spirits of St. Ignatius Loyola, The Examen Prayer in Daily Life, The New Evangelization, Discipleship and Practical Ways to Live it. All have been offered the opportunity to attend a guest speaker series, with nationally known people such as Matthew Kelly, Scott Hahn, Damon Owens, and Ralph Poyo. All were also offered the opportunity to read together, as a parish community, spiritual books written by significant catholic authors. Our religious education program has continued to deepen and our RCIA has expanded greatly.

From a perspective of formation for service, we have continued the strong tradition of care for the poor that has been one of the positive hallmarks of St. Augustine Church and Catholic Student Center. During each of the past six years we have been given the opportunity to host a mission speaker in order to assist them in their work for Christ in other parts of the world. This has been done in full, ecclesial collaboration with the Office of the Propagation of the Faith of the Archdiocese of Miami. We have continued to be given opportunities to serve the homeless locally, and we have been able to expedite tremendously our abilities to meet to the needs of those who come to the office each week seeking such assistance. We have been able to support the passing of the torch to the next generation, forming young people to care for others by giving them opportunities to learn about the social teachings of the Church and live them in weekly service trips to the Sisters of Charity in Miami, on Fall and Spring break service trips in other areas of Florida, and on many service trips to Haiti and elsewhere. We have grown in our sense of care for the environment, collaborating with the Orthodox Church in celebrating a day of prayer for and education on the environment. We have been able to increase our support for the Culture of Life, hosting the Sisters of Life several times, conducing “Respect Life Break-fasts,” continuing the Baby Bottle Campaign, and participation in the “Spiritual Adoption” program.

From a perspective of human formation, we have seen the Lord use many different vehicles to call us to freedom in

Him. Through writings, lectures, and homilies, many topics of human growth, healing, and freedom have been addressed to us. We have been able to turn toward the humanities, allowing beauty to lift us to the source of beauty, in such things as a film series and a yearly concert series. The concerts filled our church, which was just a few short years ago (literally) filled with the sound of “hissing,” with beautiful, healing, renewing music. These concerts have been mostly our own people, but God also sent others to us who are nationally known, including Collen Nixon, from Tallahassee, Jaclyn Jean from California, and Mike Mangione and the Union from Chicago. We have also been touched by art exhibits of local artists. Opportunities for community, such as a yearly parish picnic, socials for those involved in ministry, an annual gala and our most recent “Dancing with the Stars,” have also provided us opportunities and graces from the Lord to grow in our humanity.

From a perspective of spiritual formation, God has drawn us into a deep communion with Him that has strengthened our identity in Him (as individuals – sons and daughters beloved by God; and as a community – a university parish, a school of prayer and a center for the New Evangelization). We have seen extended weekly hours for Eucharistic Adoration and a yearly 40 Hours Devotion. We have seen added times for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. All have been offered incredible opportunities for grace through Advent, Lenten, and Easter Mission, including three with the CFR’s (The Franciscan Friars and Sisters of the Renewal). Numerous Days of Recollection were offered, as well as many retreat experiences. In 2016, after a hiatus of eleven years, we were able to host the St. Augustine Men’s Emmaus #20. We were given the incredible opportunity to host the relics of St. John Paul II. We prayed together several novenas to the Holy Spirit over the course of the past five year, asking for a renewed outpouring of the Spirit upon us and giving the Spirit within us permission to breathe free. And we consecrated St. Augustine Church and Catholic Student Center to Mary, Our Lady of Hope.

These are just a few concrete points for which we ought to offer grateful hearts. For example, not mentioned directly are those graces which flowed through campus ministry. We have much for which to be grateful. “Give thanks to the Lord for He is good; His love endures forever.” (Psalm 136:1) Praised be Jesus Christ.

Together, We Change Lives

A heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who made a commitment to the 2016 Archbishop’s Charities and Development Drive (ABCD). To date, 271 families and individuals have responded generously, contributing $372,710. That is 78 percent to the goal. However, we need the support of all members of St. Augustine Church and Catholic Student Center if we are to be successful in reaching our parish combined goal of $476,456. If you have not yet responded to the 2016 ABCD, please make a gift by using the pledge envelopes available in the pews or by making a gift online at www.isupportabcd.org. Thank you for all that you do and the spirit in which you do it!
