Happy Labor Day!

Mass: Monday 2 September 9:00 AM

Let us thank God for our human rights and dignity as workers in the vineyard of the Lord. By our labor, may we continue the good work of the Creator who made all heaven and earth; as well as all men and women in His own image and likeness. God bless our parish and families as we return to our job routines and school schedules!!

Mass in the Park!

Mass: Sunday 29 September 10:00 AM

We are still working out the details and permissions from the Village of Mineola. But mark your calendars for this hopeful celebration of Mass in the Memorial Park! (Rain delay date on Sunday 6 October 10:00 AM). Last year was the first time for this sacred event, so we pray that the Lord will grant us another perfect day and gathering, especially for the children of our parish family!

Pastor’s Notes

I pray that you and your family have had a blessed summer season, as we approach Labor Day weekend. Summer is not only for well-deserved vacations; but also a time for reading, reflecting, and remembering the beauty of all the Lord’s creation that surrounds us on Long Island. I am grateful to God for my brother priests who have come and gone in these last few months at Corpus Christi. Our new associate pastor Father Ngozi has been adjusting well for his first time in the USA. His sincere smile and profound presence are welcome signs of his desire to serve our parish and people. Father Eric went home to family in Madagascar, and soon back to Rome for further formation in the Vatican Diplomatic Corps. His English skills have improved immensely, and his friendly demeanor has endeared him to all of us. Father Ken Grooms is serving superbly as the newly-ordained associate pastor at St Aidan, our neighbor. He still comes back to us on Wednesdays to celebrate 9am Mass, and share in our rectory meals. We are elated to have Father Jim Bowman returning to spend most of September with us in Mineola. His past ministry as pastor here is a wonderful gift that he is ever-ready to offer. Beloved retired priest Father Patrick Callan continues to recover his health, and hopes to get back up on the altar to celebrate Mass soon. In the meantime, he constantly hears Confessions in the Rectory office with a compassionate priestly-heart. Finally, Bishop Andrzej Zglejszewski is energetically on the move, but always makes time for us on Wednesdays at 7:30am Mass, and when we need him on the weekends. Please pray for all these good men of God, and for our seminarian Joe Catafago who continues his studies toward the priesthood at St. Joseph Seminary. (Continued on the next page)

I’m sure you have noticed that the newly-constructed apartment buildings on Searing Avenue are almost complete. Our school of course will benefit greatly because of our good relationship with Mill Creek builders. In addition to the new roof from 2017, our school will be getting all new windows this Fall. Searing Avenue will be re-paved, along with brand new sidewalks and lamp-posts. We power-washed all the brick and limestone around the doors and windows, especially the main entrance below the cross and “Corpus Christi R.C. School”. Beautiful new landscaping will decorate the two fenced-in gardens in front of the school. And the back of the school will have a new fenced-in parking lot for 20-25 vehicles, along with a wrap-around driveway including one entrance and one exit. All of this is for the spiritual formation of our children in Religious Education, for their recreation in CYO sports, and for the safety/security of all our precious young ones. On the Diocesan level, we as priests have been meeting with the bishops, to plan pastorally for all our parishes in the next five to ten years. As we face the reality of declining priestly vocations coming from Long island (and the decline of active priests because of retirement, resignation, removal, sickness or death), we must rely on clergy coming from other countries to serve our people. We are also talking about “yoking or linking” parishes that are in geographic proximity, to share resources and personnel. This will mean examining Mass schedules, to reduce the number of Masses less-attended and duplicated in other churches nearby. Towards that end, as of this September we will no longer offer Mass on Saturday mornings at 9:00 AM. We encourage you to participate in St. Aidan’s 9:00 AM Saturday Mass that will continue. We are also reducing the weekly Friday 8:00 PM Portuguese Mass, to once a month on the last Friday. The daily Mass schedule will remain as is: Monday through Friday at 7:30 AM and 9:00 AM; and Monday evenings at 8:00 PM, in Spanish / Portuguese. Saturday Mass at 5:00 PM and all Sunday Masses will stay the same at Corpus Christi! Thank you for your understanding and for your prayers in these challenging times for all Roman Catholics. Yours in Christ, Fr. Malcolm

After almost two months, my stay in Mineola is coming to an end. First of all, we thank God for giving us life and for giving us the opportunity to meet. We cannot do anything without Him (Philippians 4 : 13). When I was in Rome, I already knew about this welcoming, loving and faithful parish, which is Corpus Chisti Church in Mineola, New York. And that’s exactly what I have always felt during my stay here. I express my deep gratitude to the Pastor, Fr Malcolm Burns. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the warm welcome, the guidance and the advice you gave me throught my stay here. Please also convey my thanks to Bishop John Barres. My thoughts are also going to Bishop Andrej Zglejszewski. I am really grateful to Fr Tomaz Gomide for his endless kindness, his help and for everything he did for me. I wont forget the daily dinners with Fr Callan and the very diverse and interesting conversations we had every night at the dinner table. Fr Ngozichukwu Chimezie, I enjoyed our walks and all our laughs which made us feel good. I thank Fr Kenny Grooms for his friendship. Deacon Brian Mannix, I thank you warmly. Mrs Paula Harlett, Mrs Fatima de Oliveira and Ms Irene Krause, I express my sincere gratitude for always being so caring. All of you, dear Christians, without distinction, made my stay in Mineola a time of prayer, growth and joy. I learned a lot from all of you, not only the English language but also the path of life and thoughts. These eight weeks have been filled with very rewarding experiences and will remain unforgettable for me. I do not know how to thank you but be assured that you will always be remembered in my prayers. I hope we meet again ! Please, pray for me. God bless everyone. Father Eric

Venha cantar connosco. Intenção de Domingo dia 8 de Setembro de 2019 8:30 AM + Leroy e Isabel Barroca + Helena Mendes + Antônio Correia da Costa + Julian Barreto Albuquerque
