ADULT FAITH FORMATION ~ Reacquisition of Altruism in Adults ~ Shylah Addante and Christina Bernardo will present “When Did We Stop Caring and How Do We Start Again?” next Sunday, September 11 at 9:45AM in Meeting Room 1. Research going back decades shows time and again that young children are naturally altruistic and that teenagers consistently show one of the highest levels of volunteerism by age group. However, this rate of altruism and volunteerism drops sharply as we enter into young adulthood. This presentation explores both the correlation between altruism, volunteerism, and religion, how to reignite one’s own spirit of altruism; and, finally, how to use individual passion to create organizational change.

MUSIC MINISTRY ~ Have you considered offering your musical gifts at Mass? Singer and Instrumentalists of all ages are welcome to join St. Vincent’s Music Ministry! Rehearsals are every Tuesday at 7:30PM in the church, and will resume on September 13, 2016. If you’re interested or have any questions, please contact Marie Bernadett, Director of Music and Liturgy, at email [email protected] or 489-5408, ext. 111.

Saint Vincent’s On An (Environmental) Mission

Written by David Cullen ~ Creation Care Committee Member

Each year our parish members volunteer to do work projects in an area that serves one of the values of our Church. This year the Creation Care Team is facilitating the work at local Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms and other places where food is grown and distributed more justly, as well as other projects to benefit our Earth home. A CSA is a farm that offers a certain number of "shares" to the public. Typically, the share consists of a variety of fresh vegetables, but other farm products (meat, fruit, herbs, flowers) may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a membership or a subscription) and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the growing season. CSAs benefit both the farmer and the consumer. Small farmers are strengthened overall by receiving payment early in the season, which helps with cash flow, and by knowing that their produce will be purchased. Buyers eat ultra-fresh food, are exposed to new vegetables and new ways of cooking, and learn more about how food is grown. Both the farmer and the buyer develop a relationship with each other. It's a simple enough idea, but its impact has been profound. Tens of thousands of families have joined CSAs, and there are over 4,000 CSAs in the U.S. Pope Francis in his encyclical Laudato Si says many times that...“it cannot be emphasized enough how everything is interconnected”. The projects where we'll be working are great examples of this interconnectivity. The volunteer work will be available on Saturday, Sept. 24th, just before the Feast of Saint Vincent. Watch for project descriptions in the bulletin and sign ups Sept. 10-11 and Sept. 17-18. Season of Creation - Pope Francis and two other Christian leaders are calling for a Season of Creation, from September 1 through October 4, the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, patron saint of the environmental movement. For more information visit seasonofcreation.org. You are encouraged to pray the following prayer daily…

“Creator God, we are at a turning point - a time when humanity must choose its future. You have given each of us an ecological vocation. Help us as individuals, as families, and as members of society to live sustainable, creative lives. Give us vision in reshaping the institutions we interact with every day so that each person’s physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs are met. As grateful stewards, may we respect, cherish and repair our common home, our life-giving earth. Amen.”
